[SlimDevices: Touch] Best way of storing the cover-art?

2011-04-02 Thread Lapiovra

Sometimes I have problems with finding the cover-art (SBT and Synology
NAS)
SO I would like to know what is the best way to store the cover-art: as
a jpg in the same folder as the music or embedding it into each file?

I don't think one is more foolproof than the other. Squeezebox Server
has always struggled to find and display artwork. But SBS 7.6 (in beta
testing) is much better than previous versions.

I prefer to use cover.jpg files in the album directory, as I think
they're a lot easier to manage than embedded images. If you want to
replace a cover it's a simple matter to replace a file.

I find that embedding the artwork is rock solid, at the expense of more

It doesn't require a full rescan to spot changes to artwork this way,

Thanks for all the points everyone. I'll re-evaluate things from here

I'm risking another question, which'll probably again show my lack of

could I install the SB Server on my laptop, point it at the music

Thanks.

Hello,

Squeezeboxes, the Touch included, do not talk UPnP. At least not yet.
They require a special server software called SqueezeBox Server (SBS)
running on a computer within the network for playing your local files,
or to connect to MySqueezebox.com (MySB) online for internet radio /
online music services. The Touch has its own TinySBS which can be used
when connecting a storage device to the USB port, or using a memory
card.

The reason it sees the VortexBox is that it does in fact run SBS among
many other things. Just try on the browser on your pc:
http://[ip_of_vortexbox]:9000 and you should see the SBS Web UI.

Now, it may be possible, by manually configuring the Touch, to connect
to the Samba share on your Fritz NAS device, but that is not how it
officially is intended. You would need SBS running on your NAS. I don't
know if it is possible.

The touch won't see your NAS unless it's running Squeezebox server; it
is not a UPnP client and therefore won't see it just because your NAS
is a UPnP server.

I think you are confusing www.MySqueezeBox.com (MySB) and SqueezeBox
Server (SBS) on your computer. Each player can only be connected to
one server at a time.
Each server has it's own web UI control.

Your player is on MySB if:
- you go to MySB web UI Players and your player is listed as
Connected
- you navigate player to My Music and it tells you to switch to SBS
server
- MySB web UI Remote Control actually controls the selected player

Your player is on SBS if:
- you navigate your player to My Music and your music is there
- SBS web UI actually controls the selected player

Your SB3 will tell you which server it is connected too when viewing
the Home Menu.

I just noticed when using iPeng on my iPad the album art is not filling

greyed out. I prefer this because the image looks crisper, so I'm not

With respect to embedded cover art and its impact on file size I'm
fairly sure that the metadata in flac files is stored at the beginning
the file and that a certain of space is allocated for this information.
Therefore how large (in kilobytes) can embedded cover art be before it
has an impact on the overall file size?

The reason I'm asking is that I try to obtain cover art (either by
scanning or downloading) which is has close to 1MB as possible. I like
high resolution cover art because I use Moose
(http://www.rusticrhino.com/drlovegrove/) as the front end for
controlling my various Squeezeboxen and high resolution cover art looks
great when using Moose. At present I do not use embedded cover art
instead place in the same folder as the flac files in a file named
cover.jpg.

Everything works fine except that getting SBS to recognize new or
revised cover art usually requires a full clear and rescan. Which of
course raises the question of when will SBS,s scan function be updated
to handle new and revised cover art without having to do a full clear
and rescan?

the large size of the image caused SBS/Touch to have a big hairball.
The result was a huge burst of static when I tried to play the

embedded art from each track and then put a smaller jpeg in with the
traditional cover.jpg file and all was solved...So embedded art, unless
you put it in yourself and are careful with file and image size, can
 cause this sort of issue.

OK, I ran into that STATIC thing you were talking about last night. But
here is the deal. Yesterday while browsing through this forum I saw a
mods link where the modder said to go into your setup for SBS and go
to Advanceddrop down and select File Type go to the FLAC section and
change FLAC from Native to disable and this allows all the decoding to
be done at the server. I did that and last night when I went to play
music I've had for months occasionally I would get the big burst of
static that you were talking about. I went back and changed FLAC to
native and the problem has gone completely away.

The answer is there is no answer!

When the metadata is written to a FLAC file it can be truncated right
at the end of the metadata itself, or it can be written with some
buffer space to allow for updates.

Depending on how a FLAC file was created and what last edited it, I've
had adding a single character to a track title cause a complete file
re-write whereas on other occasions adding a larger image was just able
to use the buffer space available.

Essentially, you can trim your FLAC files down to be just the metadata,
no spare room and then the music, so if you do that then of course
having the image embedded is going to increase the size of the files.

I don't worry about it though, even though I use high-quality artwork
in my files. It's only a bit of an issue in my shadow MP3 library when
I want to copy some stuff onto an iPod Nano (and quite why we have one
of those is beyond me anyway) when the size of the albums limits how
many you can fit on.

The disadvantage of filesize was completely outweighed by the fact that
SBS works perfectly with artwork in this setup, and also that my shadow
MP3 library (maintained by flac2mp3) would also transfer over all the
images seamlessly, which further means that iTunes automatically
updates the images. And I never have to do a full clear and rescan. I
couldn't have done all this with cover.jpg.

Thank you Paul for very thorough answer. Since I have just under 15K of

version of SBS includes improved handling of cover art. I can also hope
to win the lottery since there's a much better chance of that happening
than SBS finally getting improved handling of cover art :)

It would actually be reasonably easy to write a script to traverse down
the directories and call metaflac to embed the cover art in each flac
file in directories which have a cover.jpg file.

You could always leave cover.jpg there afterwards for the benefit of
Windows, as SBS will then ignore it.

It might be worth considering, and then your library will be
self-maintaining thereafter, without relying on SBS 7.6 being a
panacea.

metaflac --import-picture-from=cover.jpg *.flac

That will import cover.jpg into all the flac files in that directory.

Thanks! I'll give it a little test run before to see how I like the
results before I run it on my entire music library.

I can switch back to mysqueezebox.com (with all the standard menu
options) if I release Touch from the squeezeboxserver by selecting the
 other player.

You don't 'release' a Squeezebox when you change players in the web
interface of Squeezebox Server. All you are doing is selecting a
different player to control from the interface. The other player(s)
remain connected to the Squeezebox Server.

So the issue is the Touch finding my PC/server, not being controlled by
 my PC/server.

I've seen the situation numerous times where I can control the Touch
from the server, the server thinks it's connected to the Touch, but the
Touch doesn't realize that it's connected to the server. It's exactly
like you describe - I'm unable connect to the server if I select it on
the Touch's screen from My Music. It plays music, but the Now Playing
screen on the Touch is never displayed. It happens also on the Radio,
so must be a SqueezePlay thing, which continues to have connectivity
problems. For some reason it's only ever been a problem with 7.5.x
servers and usually the situation clears up by itself eventually. No
idea what causes it.

If I select Squeezebox Server on the Touch, under Advanced, i am told
that 'neither Squeezebox Server nor the scanner are running'/'detects
 no attached storage device'.

This is referring to the _internal_ Squeezebox Server that can run on
the Touch if you have an attached USB drive or SD card. Ignore it if
you're using a Squeezebox Server on your network.

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Album Covers sometimes appears question

2011-04-02 Thread rgro

Ah, but the question pertaining to this thread would be: did the files
that caused the problem have embedded artwork larger than 500 X 500?

If so, then it becomes a question of trading off any perceived SQ
benefit in shifting the decoding to the server vs. having (or deleting)
the large embedded art files.

As an aside, that mod can be one of a set of (Soundcheck's) mods that
some folks here (me included) say have made a noticeable difference in
the Touch's SQ, though if done one at a time, people may or may not
perceive any differences with an individual mod.

It happened on 2 different songs that it had never happened on before.
I only remember 1 of them,it was Ella Louie and the album art is
600x600 which I don't think would be considered large. I got the tweak
from someone's toolkit 2 or similar.

It doesn't require a full rescan to spot changes to artwork this way, as
it will detect the changes to files after a regular scan for new and
changed, so is definitely the simplest way to manage your artwork.

You can accomplish the same thing by bumping the mtime on the music
files. SBS will rescan the files and the new cover.jpg is picked up and
precached.

I only use embedded covers where I absolutely have to, and the only
software that I've ever used that requires them was iTunes. When I had
an iPod I embedded covers in my MP3 mirror library, but since dumping
the iPod it's no longer necessary.

You would probably not hear any difference between FLAC and well ripped
MP3's on a $150 computer speaker set.
But as with all things audio it is subjective. It's also easy to try
for yourself, rip a couple of FLACS and compare them to their MP3
sibling. ;)

The touch is a marvelous piece of kit for an unbelievably cheap price
for what it does. But it does require a decent server. A low powered
NAS is networked attached storage (Not A Server). Try it with SbS
running on a computer to get a feel for what it can do.
