Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Playing ANY flac file as PCM has stopped working
Thanks for the replies. No I did not change anything else. I only installed the SB software from QPKG and installed the mods from Soundcheck. I changed the FLAC format setting to use PCM instead and this worked even for 96khz flac files. I could tell by the indicator on my DAC (my SB streams to DAC via SPDIF, digital output only). By the way the CPU of the QNAP seems to have little trouble when playing PCM, it never goes beyond 5 / 10 percent load. But if it is true that this PCM is not really supporting 96Khz at all, I will change the Format setting to original again. Just to be sure, I will re-install SB Server. -- stillwaterz stillwaterz's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=43632 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=87066 ___ Touch mailing list Touch@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/touch
[SlimDevices: Touch] Artist list should display ARTISTSORT instead of ARTIST
Hi, is there a simple way to configure the SB touch to display ARTISTSORT instead of ARTIST in the artist list? As an Example: I use ARTIST=Tori Amos and ARTISTSORT=Amos, Tori If I browse now through artist, I get the correct sort order but it is just painful reading the ARTIST instead of ARTISTSORT. Tori Amos Animal Keren Ann I really would like to have this list displaying ARTISTSORT Amos, Tori Animal Ann, Keren Now you could argue to set ARTIST=Amos, Tori. The downside is that I really like the title displayed correct with Tori Amos Am I missing somehting??? Thanks! There are several on this forum which discuss the sound of the Touch's DAC versus several different Touch/external DAC combos. I suggest you read through a couple of these threads. Unfortunately for owners of older and expensive DACs one area in audio which has undergone vast changes the past 15 to 20 years is the external DAC market. Apparently there are several under $1K DACs which can hold their own against mega-buck DACs from the 1980s and 1990s and often, due their newer designs and chip sets, are even capable then the older units, For example most newer DACs can handle the higher sampling rates (88.2kHz and above) and greater bit depth (24 bit and sometimes even 32 bit) of today's high resolution digital audio files. Just remember that most of the concerns regarding your EAD are about its inability to handle 24 bit files, which may not even be the case since the EAD may in fact be able to play 24 bit files but only using 20 bits. I would check with EAD about how your DAC handles 24 bit files. then again if you don't have any 24 bit files then you have little to worry about. -- ralphpnj Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels - Snatch - The Transporter - Transporter 2 (oops) - Touch 'Last.fm' (http://www.last.fm/user/jazzfann/) ralphpnj's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=10827 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=87075 ___ Touch mailing list Touch@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/touch

To put it into perspective, it is nice to sometimes listen to 24/96 files. But the vast majority of recordings are good old reedbook CD , further very few are recorded in such quality that they merit from 24/96 treatment anyway. So you can relax and listen to the 99,9% available music that is not 24bit. I have a more relaxed outlook these days, I listen to music . Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Laptop/hard drive/connection questions
1) You can either run SBS on your laptop, or run the Touch's built-in server (aka TinySBS). User results with TinySBS are mixed, whereas using your laptop should be straightforward, so I would recommend running SBS on your laptop. That means the USB hard drive would be connected to your laptop, not to the Touch. After connecting the USB drive to your laptop, the preferred approach is to connect the laptop to your home network router via ethernet. Presumably your Touch is already connected to your network via the router. If this is wireless that's fine, though ethernet would be better if it is feasible in your circumstances. Best practice is to rip to a lossless format, and for SBs the best format is usually FLAC. I recommend dBpoweramp (www.dbpoweramp.com) for ripping to FLAC. It's not freeware, but its secure ripping and superior metadata handling make it well worth the cost (around $36) in my book. It has a 30-day free trial. In my opinion the best freeware FLAC ripper out there is EAC. Both dBpoweramp and EAC are Windows programs, although they will run on Linux under Wine. If you are using Mac OSX then you need to look for other software. If you haven't done much ripping yet, do a handful of CDs at first and make sure that you're getting the ripping and tagging the way you want it for you dive in fully to do your whole collection. Some people dive right in, only to have to re-do everything later because of a simple mistake they made, and then repeated 1000 times. 2. Yes, you can easily switch back and forth between internet radio and your own ripped library. Note that as long as your laptop is running you do not have to switch explicitly from SBS to mysqueezebox.com to get internet radio. You can access everything on mysb.com via SBS running on your laptop. 3. For SBS running on your laptop the brand of USB drive doesn't matter much. If you want to use TinySBS then the choice and type of USB drive matters a LOT. For TinySBS you should use a USB drive that has its own power supply, not one that draws power via USB, because too many drives exceed the spec on power draw, thus exceeding what power the Touch supplies (which is slightly over-spec). Several users have reported having better luck with Toshiba USB drives and TinySBS. I believe there is a page on the wiki (wiki.silmdevices.com) that summarizes which drives work better or worse. Good luck and enjoy. Having your music library readily available via SB is really where you will take maximum advantage of the SB system. -- aubuti aubuti's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2074 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=87109 ___ Touch mailing list Touch@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/touch

+1 on dbpoweramp (and going slow to figure out how you like your tagging, etc.) MP3tag is a very useful tagging program that I use in addition to dbpa. Also agree on FLAC. If you also use ipods, etc., you can also easily create a mirror library of mp3 files for use on these. But with FLAC (lossless) you rip once, get your tags and art perfect, then you're done. You can always create the best sort of lossy files for other uses from the FLAC archive files (and the FLACs work well with the SB universe of things). -- garym garym's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=17325 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=87109 ___ Touch mailing list Touch@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/touch
