[SlimDevices: Touch] Running Touch without PC being on
I was running a Squeezebox Touch with music (FLAC files) stored first on a USB stick and then on a USB Buffalo external drive. I upgraded to storing the files on a (new) Western Digital My Book Live 1Tb drive and connected it to the Squeezebox Touch by ethernet cable via my Netgear Wireless-N Modem Router (DGNB2100). Operating system is Windows 7 (64-bit). Unfortunately, while it seems to perform well if my PC is switched on, the Touch does not seem to be able to access the files on the NAS directly if the PC is switched off. I note that Squeezebox installed the following on the USB memory stick: Directory = .Squeezebox\cache Files: squeezebox-persistent.accdb; squeezebox-persistent.db; squeezebox.db;ArtworkCache.db In contrast, it has installed no folders or files on the My Book NAS. Please advise: 1) Is Squeezebox capable of running on this system without the PC being switched on and running? (It is not possible for me to leave the PC on overnight.) 2) If so, what do I need to do to achieve this? Hi, I really would like to use some of the spare laptops that we have here, for controlling my digital music. However, I don't want to feed the Hi Fi system from the sound card.. they are not that great IMHO. My thought is to use the laptop to direct digital sound to an external stand-alone DAC, not USB-based but using the the standard RCA connectors for coax. Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Running Touch without PC being on
1) It should be. 2) I suspect that you have SBS (Squeezebox Server) installed on your PC. When you turn off your PC, SBS goes down, and then the Touch doesn't have anything to tell it what to do. Try enabling the Touch's own internal SBS after turning off your PC. It's called TinySC, and you should be able to find it in the Touch's menus somewhere. -- Soulkeeper -that is not dead which can eternal lie. and with strange aeons even death may die.- touch (sans caps) + duet + boom + radio (portable) / dd-wrt on linksys wrt160n / sbs 7.6 on w7(x86) with avira free Soulkeeper's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=35297 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=89286 ___ Touch mailing list Touch@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/touch
Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Running Touch without PC being on
You can use the Touch's built-in server (known as TinySC or TinySBS, but listed on the Touch only as Squeezebox Server) to play tracks from a USB hard drive, USB thumb drive, or SD card connected directly to the Touch. To access music on any other storage you need to run regular SBS _somewhere_. That somewhere could be your pc or your NAS, assuming your NAS is capable of running SBS. TinySC/TinySBS cannot reach out and find your files on the NAS. Actually, strictly speaking it can if you set up NFS on the Touch and on the NAS, but (a) that is pretty difficult, and (b) most people who have tried it said that performance is lousy. If you know your way around Linux a bit and want to try it, search these forums for Touch and NFS. I will try it again but the problem last time was that in this spell of warmer weather, the fan wanted What you're trying to do isn't unheard of but it is a little unusual, and more important, it is outside the scope of the Touch. As noted, you basically have three options: (1) use TinySBS with a USB drive, (2) run SBS on a pc, accessing a music library on the pc and/or NAS, or (3) run SBS on the NAS. All NASs are definitely not created equal, but in fairness to WD, NAS stands for Network Attached _Storage_. Most consumer-grade NAS devices like that are meant to run file server software, and not music server software. And generally they do a fine job of acting as a file server. I'm not sure about your exact model, but see this thread for some info about installing SBS on a WD My Book Live: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=84735 . It's not as straightforward as installing SBS on a regular pc. It sounds like you're trying to suspend the pc, not hibernate it. Either are viable options, but a big difference is that when hibernating everything in RAM is written to disk, and then the pc is powered off completely, so there can be no fan whirring if it is hibernated. The downside of hibernate is that it takes a little longer to come out of hibernation than it does to come out of suspend; the downside of suspend is that the continues to draw some minimal power to hold everything in RAM, and that might make the fan come on. -- aubuti aubuti's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2074 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=89286 ___ Touch mailing list Touch@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/touch

[SlimDevices: Touch] Squeezebox Server no good on new Mac Mini
I have a Squeezebox Touch and discarded my RedayNas Duo because it was too slow to allow Squeezebox Server to convert 192/24 files to 96/24 before sending them to the SBT via wireless. Now I bought the new MacMini as a Music server for the SBT. Unfortunately it doesn't work as smoothly as with the NAS. I don't know if the Squeeze Software for the Mac is bad or if it just doesn't work well with OS x Lion. My SBT every now and then falls dead and when I try to awaken it it doesn't find the music that I select on the touch screen (iPeng with the iPad just has completely quit working with the Mac). When I select the album the playlist says nothing. Occasionally I succeed in connecting the server on the Mac with the SBT by using the remote function. But at times it won't even play albums but only individual songs. I had decided for streaming with the SBT to my stereo and not directly with the Mac because I don't like a monitor in my living room and because the SBT is much easier to use, especially with HD files. Now this usability aspect has completely changed to the worse. This could also very easily be a case of having two different tag types in your files. MP3tag, for instance, can read ID3V1 tags, let you modify them and write them back as ID3V2, leaving the original ones untouched. In this case you can get two different ARTIST tags in one file, but you'll only see one displayed in most tagging software. Initially I thought that the SBT simply could not see the server over the network. But after setting up a Macbook Pro to share the iMac screen so that I could watch the preference pane remotely, the problem immediately became apparent. Touch anything that involved asking the server to do anything such as display a list of tracks in an album and the server on the iMac could be observed to immediately stop via the screen share; the preference pane displaying The Server is Stopped The crash is so sudden that the logs display nothing that would give a a clue as to the cause This can be reproduced anytime I want. It might be possible to use relative paths in playlists. I've never tried it with Squeezebox Server, but it works with some software. So, if you have a structure like D:\Music D:\Playlists your playlists might contain paths that look like ..\Music\etc. instead of D:\Music\etc. If you move both directories to the E: drive, it should still work. But this could easily be more trouble than the situation it attempts to fix. You couldn't, for instance, move the playlist folder to the F: drive and have it still work. SteveCresswell;646402 Wrote: Hi! I'm afraid it's not just the Mac Mini, neither is is just Lion. I'd love to be proved wrong and hear from a Mac user who has a working 7.6 setup, but as far as I'm concerned, 7.6 simply does not work on OSX, and judging by the lack of interest shown on the official forum, that is not likely to change in the near term. Steve Im running an iMac intel i3 with Lion, iTunes 10.4 and SBS 7.6.1. After some initial hassles with 7.6 I downloaded 7.6.1-r32935 and have been problem free. -- MichaelJ MichaelJ's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=43215 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=89294 ___ Touch mailing list Touch@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/touch
Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Standalone Touch displays tags I didn't put there
paulster;646366 Wrote: This could also very easily be a case of having two different tag types in your files. MP3tag, for instance, can read ID3V1 tags, let you modify them and write them back as ID3V2, leaving the original ones untouched. In this case you can get two different ARTIST tags in one file, but you'll only see one displayed in most tagging software. Squeezebox will read them both though. if you haven't yet done so, create a custom column in mp3tag, with this as the value: %_tag_read%[ (%_tag%)] This will show you the tag read as well as any other tags in the file I believe. -- garym garym's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=17325 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=89231 ___ Touch mailing list Touch@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/touch
Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Playlists 'Not portable' like Music Library ?
Cut-Throat;646413 Wrote: Yup, I did that, but I was wondering if there was a more 'automatic' way to do this. If you're familiar with 'sed' (stream editor) then you could process all of your playlists with a single command line. sed is a standard utility on *nix and ports are available for Windows and OSX. But if you're not familiar with it then batch search and replace is as automatic as it gets for fixing a situation in which you've moved the track to a completely different place from where the playlist says it is. -- aubuti aubuti's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2074 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=89300 ___ Touch mailing list Touch@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/touch
