Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Alternatives to Apple-crap-Music for Squeezebox?

2022-12-24 Thread garym

I use TuneFusion, by the maker of dbpoweramp (Illustrate) to sync
selected music from my music files (which are connected to my Squeezebox
system) to my iPhone. TuneFusion can automatically convert from
lossless to any lossy codec when transferring. I used to keep a lossy
mirror of my music files to transfer to my iPhone with itunes. But I no
longer need to do this. I simply run foobar2000(mobile) on my iphone
and transfer files with TuneFusion, converting my FLAC files on the fly
to 192kbps mp3 files on my phone. And if one prefers to play the FLAC
files on the iPhone, that works too, just don't turn on the lossy
conversion function. And I have no need to use iTunes for anything
anymore.

Spotty is designed to work with Spotify Connect, as best as it can, but
connect still remains a weakness. @mherger can more eloquently describe
the underlying issues.

Do you have issues if you don't use SpotifyConnect? I use Spotty, but
not Connect and have no issues. Michael, the developer of this plugin
has said many times on this forum that the "SpotifyConnect" function
doesn't work very well.

it is correct that a touch can only be connected to mySqueezebox.com OR
LMS. not both at same time. mysb.com is essentially LMS “in the cloud”.
On the touch menu select my music and it should ask to connect to any
LMS on your network.

is causing you problems. Are you sure the touch and LMS are on same

The embedded server of a touch was an after thought because the
developers realized it "might" work. Causes lots of headaches and never
works quite good enough. And now, with rPi units that can serve as
small, low power draw, full power LMS servers (running, eg.,
piCorePlayer), there is really no reason to even play with the embedded
server.

No. Connecting SBT to ethernet connector on your laptop will not do
anything. That connector is so that the laptop can connect to your home
router via ethernet rather than WIFI. The SBT would need to be
connected to the router via ethernet (or a switch that is itself
connected to the router).

Not unless you add a "DAC" (if you're using RCA input to your stereo

to your DAC) to the rPi (this is plug and play too). Look at hifiberry

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Patching a SB touch

2021-09-15 Thread garym

since you're running LMS 8.2 you may want to tick the "community
firmware" in LMS > Settings > Plugins. This will update any TOUCH,
RADIO, or duet CONTROLLER's firmware to 8.0.1. I've been running this a
while and have zero issues. Note that after installing the plugin, it
may be 24 hours before you see your TOUCH show on its screen an option
to update firmware (or on TOUCH menu go to settings, advanced, software
updates, all after about 24 hours).

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Upgrade LMS

I had forgotten he was using the "tiny LMS" built into the TOUCH. Yes
that's mostly a disaster. You'll be VERY happy with the TOUCH as a
player and LMS running on your rPi4. And you don't need a HAT, because
your rPi won't be attached to the DAC. It will just run LMS. The DAC
will connect to the TOUCH via optical or coax.

And I suspect your TOUCH is fine as player. first I'd add LMS to rPi4
and use with TOUCH and see how that works. That's what Jeff was
suggesting.

Does your DAC have a USB input. If so, you can connect to the USB on
your rPi4. Otherwise you'll need some sort of HAT (the Allo is just one
of many).

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Input question

2021-07-01 Thread garym

Just adding my 2 cents to the OP's question (and confirming all the
other advice). Yes, one must be running LMS somewhere to use the Touch.
It is not a player that one simply directly connects to a computer. It
is a "network streamer". LMS manages the local music files, or internet
radio streams, or services such as Pandora, Spotify, Tidal, etc. LMS
then STREAMS the content to players on the same network (like the
Touch). LMS can run on a Mac, Windows, Linux, etc. that's on the same
network as the Touch. Others are recommending running LMS on an
raspberry Pi instead of the Mac. I agree. I run LMS on an rPi4B running
piCorePlayer. This setup includes LMS. And I then use a TOUCH (or
other squeezebox players) for the actual network attached players.

One of my Touch players has been powered on continuously for at least 12
years (maybe once every few years there is a short power outage of less
than an hour because of a storm or something). And use the digital clock
screen saver as it also makes for a nice clock in its location. I've
never had any issue with the display.

(note, I've had issues with fading screen etc. for my Booms, so I keep
those screens OFF when not using and do the same with my Transporter
(screen off), using BLANKSAVER plugin.)

Don't miss the fact that after you download and install the first app,
the "version comparison fix" is installed with the radio's menu item
"patch installer" (which is a different menu item than Applet

I'm in the don't bother camp (the DAC in the Touch is quite good
actually). I use an older Benchmark I DAC connected to one of my Touch
players, but only because I already had it, and I like the ability to
feed my amplifier with balanced analog from the Benchmark (rather than
unbalanced analog output from the Touch). Regarding MQA, I've read
conflicting posts about whether the Touch can pass MQA files to an
attached DAC that can then do the MQA unfolding. If you care about MQA
and want a different DAC, you should at least purchase an MQA capable
DAC.

Seeking the best is a good goal of course, but at some point (for some
people) the "seeking" takes over from the enjoyment of having reached
"really good". As they say, don't let the "perfect" be the enemy of the
good. On the other hand, I have some friends that say, "I'll quit
looking for better when they close the lid on my coffin.". Take care
and enjoy! /Gary

Unlikely to find much help on the z553 here on this forum. Might have

Without regard to your hearing, the difference between a well

subtle.

You should probably start a new thread for this question (title it
something like "Tidal and MQA files playing through LMS". It has nothing
to do with the EDO app (the title of this thread). LMS won't decode
MQA, but I recall seeing some posts that reported that the MQA Tidal
files were passed through to the MQA capable DACs and "turned on the
blue light" showing that MQA was recognized. Can't find these posts at
the moment, but google a bit and you may find them.

Agree. I setup a "set and forget" LMS server for my brother. Simply
connected via ethernet to his router, and rPi has USB drive attached
containing music files. I recommend the rPi4B for use as a server, but
rPi3B+ (or almost any rPi) is perfectly fine. 2GB ram is plenty.

I vaguely recall that if both folder/cover.jpg and embedded art are
included, then LMS defaults to the embedded art. But I haven't gone back
to search the forum to confirm this. In my own use case, I have either
cover.jpg *or* embedded art (in lossy files), but not both.

Wont hurt anything to have both embedded art and folder.jpg. I dont do

I'm sure there is, as Paul Webster did it on his server (earlier in this

any commercial hosting sites are all using https by now. Running an
rPi is easier than hosting your own private 24/7 server I suspect.

good point. I understand that lack of https is why many have had to
move from mysqueezebox.com to local LMS, even to continue to get certain

Interesting. Oh well. I suppose the backup is that his friend use the
Touch connected to mysqueezebox.com (and then probably works from
there), and if he wants to change to his own music, he switches back to
tinyLMS. Maybe there is a way to have only a few menu items that allow
this easily.

Or do what I did for my brotherI set up an rPi 3B+ to run an LMS
server, with his music attached to rPi via a portable USB drive. And he
just runs that 24/7 connected to his router. Then the "on
mysqueezebox.com" favorites would work and he'd have his local music
too.

Once the favorites.opml file is saved on dropbox, and then the URL for
the link to the file is created and used in mysb.com, you don't need to
be logged into dropbox for this to work. The only hiccup I had was that
my pasted link had d=0 instead of d=1. Once I changed end of URL to
d=1, all worked perfectly.

And now that I think about it, this could actually solve the problem of
switching back and forth from tinyLMS to mysb.com. I'm not sure about
tinyLMS, but in regular LMS, assuming you have your mysb.com credentials
entered in LMS, when you look at favorites in LMS, the last item listed
is "On mysqueezebox.com". So assuming tinyLMS is the same, you could
simply remove all the other favorites, and your friend would be left
with only one favorite"On mysqueezebox.com" and he'd click on this
and then on the favorite that was saved earlier (my "Gary's LMS
Favorites") and everything would be there in subfolders. And could be
updated from the internet by anyone with access to the dropbox account
where favorites.opml stored and the mysb.com account.

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Tiny LMS - adding Favorites

2020-10-11 Thread garym

This doesn't help with having to switch back and forth to mysb.com, but
regarding favorites in folders, here's what I do. I take my
favorites.opml file from my currently running LMS (that is setup with
subfolder organization), and I save that on my dropbox account. Then I
copy the URL link of that dropbox file (favorites.opml) and make that a
favorite in mysqueezebox.com. After you paste in the link there, the
end of the link may look like: "favorites.opml?dl=0" (without the
quotes). if it is "dl=0" change it to "1", that is, "dl=1" instead.
Give this a name in the mysb.com favorites (mine is Gary's LMS
Favorites), and now when you are on mysb.com, you'll see this favorite.
Clicking on it will show you the entire subfolder structure.

and when you do need local LMS, an rPi4B running piCorePlayer will be an
excellent answer. Great LMS server the size of a deck of cards. Connect

good point, but I worry about the router being set to "AUTO" (which was
the default on mine) and knowing the WIFI channel from an analyzer at
any point in time wouldn't tell me that it was set to AUTO (unless I
checked over several days and saw that it was changing).

In my ATT DSL router, I got the router page in my browser, then at the
top of the home page there is a list of items "key things to do using
your gateway", one being WIFI. I click on WIFI, and it takes me to WIFI
Configuration page. I then click on ADVANCED OPTIONS, and near the top
is the settings info for the 2.4ghz WIFI. I can set the channel number
there and also set to use 20MHz bandwidth.

Your router may be different, but as mentioned, just find the settings
related to WIFI.

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Cannot get Touch to connect

2020-09-03 Thread garym

I use vistumbler on my pc to see all the local WIFI networks and their
channels. Free download from here:
https://www.vistumbler.net/

Regarding your router, do you know how to login to it from your browser
to see your settings, etc.?
I have ATT DSL combo router/modem at weekend house and I can get to the
settings by going here on a webbrowser:
http://192.168.1.254/

At home I have cable provider and can get to my router by going here on
a webbrowser:
http://192.168.1.1/

In both cases after logging in with username/passsword to the routers, I
can see various settings. One of these is the WIFI channel. By the way,
default on many is "Auto". This is particularly not good as the channel
will change often. While logged into your router, it is also a good
idea to "reserve" the IP address that is assigned to each TOUCH so they
always get the same IP address from your router after a restart.

If you wanted to use a different Router, you'd need to plug it into one
of the ethernet ports on your existing modem/router, and then setup the
new router for WIFI with channel you want and SSID info and password you
want to use. But you'd have to ether turn off "use router as DHCP
server" on either the newly attached router or in your original
modem/router. That is, you only want ONE router in your network handing
out IP addresses (which is what the DHCP server does).

Do you have close by neighbors. If a neighbor acquired a new WIFI router
(particularly some of the high powered things available these days),
that could have created interference with your WIFI that wasn't there
before. Also make sure you set your Router to use for WIFI only either
channel 1, 6, or 11. There are free programs you can get for your
computer or smart phone that can locate all nearby WIFI networks and
tell you what channel they are using. Put your Router WIFI channel on
one of those 3 channels that the closest power routers are NOT using.

p.s. and sometimes the interference is not a new nearby wifi router.
Could be a WIFI camera, baby monitor, RING doorbell, etc. I've read
that people have had lots of interference created by these things.

Could be because without the applet, LMS is downconverting the 24/192
track to 24/96. So smaller file size. You say you're using WIFI.
Connect as a test with ethernet cable (which requires setup, more than
simply plugging in).

Given that you have two Touch players with exactly the same symptoms all
of a sudden, I don't suspect something has gone wrong with both TOUCH
players. I suspect something on the network or WIFI. You say you've
done factory resets of the TOUCH players. I might try this again, but
when setting up, connect one to the Router via ethernet and connect
without WIFI (you'll have the options of doing this when setting up).
Not for permanent use, but just to see if you can get the Touch to see
your LMS again.

That's typically the case when the players are connected to a DIFFERENT
LMS server (or at least they had been and think they still are). I
recall in the past having some trouble in LMS webGUI getting the players
"back", but was able to use iPeng on my iphone to do this. This may not
be a problem with newer versions of LMS, but that's the first thing I
thought about.

Don't know. I don't use any of the ones you mention, and I simply untick
all these in LMS > Settings > Plugins, and they are not installed on my

either would work (I recommended #1 early on). ethernet can handle
several hundred feet of cable. Re: #2, assuming you have normal
firewall, etc. on router, don't open any ports on the router, and run
some sort of AntiVirus program on the 2008 MacBook, it might make a
perfectly fine server. Just delete all the personal files you don't use
(not required, but just in case), put your music files on it, and run
only LMS on the old computer. I don't see a security issue there, but
I'm not security expert.

Why not? The Mac running LMS is connected via wifi to router (one hop),
then TOUCH is connected to same router via WIFI. Wouldn't this be a
double hop?
(OP tested this, when he wired the Touch, buffering went away).

for wifi, make sure you're using only 1, 6, or 11 and not automatic (all
these are set in your router, typically from a webGUI interface to the
router administration). Also, you mention you're in NY. Maybe a
crowded wifi space. Use some sort of program (lots of free ones
available) to see what the least crowded nearby channels are for you,
and use of of these (again, 1, 6, or 11, as these channels don't overlap
with adjacent channels).

touch generally works well with WIFI. But, as you've discovered,
typically things are best if there is only one WIFI hop. Many have
their music server wired and use the TOUCH with WIFI.Perhaps you
should buy an rPi4B, install piCorePlayer, connect a USB portable drive
with your music to the rPi, and now you have a complete LMS music server
the size of a paperback book (rPi and USB drive combined!). And this
can be connected out of the way directly to your router with ethernet.
And total cost probably less than $100. Or as you mentioned, just use
either Spotify, Tidal, etc. to stream music. Then only one wifi hop
(router to touch).

untick the upnp/dlna and itunes plugins for sure. And I'd likely remove
the musicIP plugin.

Many of the others could be removed (as no longer work, like MOG), but

Yep, these type files shouldn't buffer, but something is causing it. And
you're not getting buffering from internet radio (but that's only one
wifi hop rather than two). Regarding connecting the TOUCH with
ethernet, I recall that simply plugging in an ethernet cable doesn't
convert the TOUCH to ethernet. It's still setup to use WIFI and using
WIFI even though you've plugged it in. That's why I suggested testing
with the computer connected to ethernet. I can't recall how to change
the TOUCH to ethernet. I think there's a way, but the full proof way is
to just do a factory setup on the TOUCH with the ethernet connected and
tell it to use that setup.

seems that the scan picked up your files, as it shows the number of
tracks and artists and albums. I'm assuming that you can see these in
LMS, select something to play, and then once playing, the TOUCH starts
rebuffering. Correct?

p.s. As a test can you temporarily setup the Mac wired to your router
via ethernet? With your current setup, you have two "wifi" hops. From
the Mac running LMS back to the router and then from the router to the
Touch. This can sometimes be a problem. Worth testing to see if
that's it.

Where are your files located? how attached to Mac. Wired vs Wifi. and

I'd say it is very capable even without the EDO applet. (in
case the OP doesn't know, the EDO applet will allow the Touch to play
24/192 files (normally limited to 24/96 files). EDO will also allow the
one to connect the Touch to the USB input of a DAC. (full disclosure,
I've not used the EDO applet on my Touch players.)

I've thought about moving to 8, but I'm mostly running 7.9.3, and it
does everything I want. So good enough for now (for me)

1. In many ways the squeezebox/LMS ecosystem has never been stronger.
The rPi revolution (and piCorePlayer), among others, has solved the
discontinuation of the hardware. The usergroups at this forum are doing
amazing work.

2. LMS can allow one to play spotify, tidal, and Quobuz streaming
services.

3. You should run either LMS 7.9.3 or LMS 8.0
http://downloads.slimdevices.com/nightly/?ver=7.9
http://downloads.slimdevices.com/nightly/?ver=8.0

4. You can point the LMS music library to wherever you have your itunes
music files stored, and LMS will scan this location and make those files
available to use. no need for any special "use itunes xml file" etc.

5. Load up LMS, set it up. fire up your Touch players and have fun. As
you can see from my signature, I'm still using my Squeezebox players
with great results.

netchord wrote:

It shouldn't. This poster for some reason had problems with channel 6
and hypothesized that the TOUCH doesn't like channel 6, but there is
nothing inherently wrong with channel 6 on a TOUCH. One of my TOUCH
players is on Channel 6. (of course, it is well known that one should
try to use 1, 6, or 11, as these are the only channels that don't
overlap a side channel, and using "auto" channel select is not a good
thing.)

edit: and of course if a particular channel is overused nearby, suffers
interference, etc. then it should be avoided. But this is a function of
a person's local network setup and nearby users.

That tells me that the TOUCH is not talking to your local network or the
internet in general. I suspect something minor is wrong. Have you done
a factory reset of the TOUCH and started over with it (network setup,
etc.):

To *reset Squeezebox Touch*, press the *reset* button located on the
back of your *Squeezebox* above the power plug. Hold the button until a
“*Factory Reset*" message appears on the screen. Alternatively, go to

Keep in mind that the Touch is not "connecting" to the Vortexbox server
itself. The Vortexbox is connecting to your local network (ethernet
connected I assume), and the Touch is connecting via WIFI to your local
network. Perhaps your vortexbox is no longer seeing the local network.
Maybe it has a fixed IP address related to the old router (e.g., old
router may have used 192.168.1.XXX and new router uses 192.168.0.).

To test whether the Touch is connected to the local network with no
issues, can you switch to "mysqueezebox.com" source on the TOUCH (using
screen menu) and see if the Touch plays when connected to mysb.com.
This will confirm that the Touch sees the network just fine (thus the
problem is that the Vortexbox is not seeing the network).

Keep in mind that there is nothng to setup for the rPI before using
PiCorePlayer. One burns the SDcard with piCorePlayer OS, then inserts
the card into the rPi. So the very first time you turn on the rPi out
of the box could be when it is running the piCorePlayer software.

It's super simple. I've set up several for myself and friends, and I
have no linux knowledge, etc. But I can follow specific instructions.
See this for setting up.
https://www.picoreplayer.org/
https://www.picoreplayer.org/main_getting_started.shtml

I just setup a rPi4B yesterday for running LMS. I used a 'flirc'
(https://flirc.tv/more/raspberry-pi-4-case) case which helps it run very
cool. Entire thing is the size of a pack of cards, not counting the
attached USB drive that holds my music. Took me about 15 minutes from
the time I downloaded the program, burned to an SD card, and followed
the piCorePlayer instructions for setup using LMS.

That is the newest *firmware* which is something on the squeezebox

I think yes. You'll be running a "tiny" version of the LMS server on the
Touch. And other players on your network can be connected to that LMS
server. Note that this is a "tiny" version, not full featured, and the
Touch is woefully underpowered for this is general. So it is likely not
a great setup. Much better to get an rPi 3B+ or 4, install picoreplayer,
and install LMS on the rPi. This makes for a very powerful LMS server.
I use one with an attached USB drive containing about 114,000 files,
mostly FLAC and it works very well. Easy to setup too.

correct, you need an external DAC. Lots of choices, from a few dollars
to over $100,000. Search the forums for this. I think lots of threads
forDACs. On the other hand the DAC built into the TOUCH is quite good.
And the TOUCH plays 24/96 natively. I personally find EDO unnecessary.

it is an APP installed directly via a menu on the Touch. It is NOT a
plug-in in LMS.

it does answer your main question. It says:

“And remember: The Toolbox and EDO shall not be installed at the same
time!!”

If you switched the powerline adaptors and had same outcome (red near
TOUCH), then that at least tells you it is NOT a problem with that
particular powerline adaptor. Is there something new plugged in on that
circuit?

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Cant connect to Ethernet

2020-01-30 Thread garym

First thing I would do is:

1. turn OFF (unplug) Touch
2. Turn off computer/NAS running LMS
3. Unplug modem/Router.

Then:

1. plug in modem/Router and let fully start
2. turn on Computer/NAS running LMS and let fully start (i.e., can
access the webGUI of LMS)
3. Plug in Touch and it should find the LMS and internet.
