I'm only vaguely familiar with upnp, can you explain the implications and why its a negative if you have time? Basically means it uses something like Twonky, or Windows Media Player as it's server software instead of SBS. That means no custom plugins, no sync between players, no web control, no iPeng (or anything similar) and so on. I've also never seen a upnp based player which can play gapless - which is a deal breaker for me. -- radish 'HELP ME RAISE MONEY FOR CHILDREN'S CANCER RESEARCH!' It only talks to upnp servers, which is a big minus in my book. Also doesn't seem to support FLAC (or indeed any lossless encoding), and most importantly doesn't have any audio outputs other than headphones! AndyK;480686 Wrote: As far as I know, the Touch is supplied with a infrared remote, so that it will work with a Harmony, is this correct?. If so, will I then be able to control a receiver via a harmony that controls the touch? Yes and yes. Regarding audio streaming maxing out the network, I guess the guy experiencing this was also using it heavily for downloading etc to cause stuttering in the sound and slow response on the controller. At the moment I have a 11b device on my network and with that on, I assume the network will have trouble coping with the traffic (although I have ordered a 2200bg mini PCI card for my GFs old thinkpad - dirt cheap at the moment. Even with that out of the way, I still feel more secure with wired connection for the audio traffic and also the price for the controller alone is very high compared to buying a controller+receiver set so its hard to justify not getting the receiver also. So put the SBR in the bedroom as an extra zone. FLAC is a pretty insignificant amount of traffic for a decent wireless network to carry, and the Touch has a pretty big buffer. When using the Touch to control the receiver, will it then also pull an audio stream from the network because it assumes it's connected to an amplifier, or is it possible to configure it in such a way that it will ONLY function as a control device? Think of the Touch as a player and controller in one box. Just because the controller's doing something doesn't mean the player is - they're entirely seperate. So if nothing has told the player to start playing, it won't :) -- radish 'HELP ME RAISE MONEY FOR CHILDREN'S CANCER RESEARCH!' I don't like the idea that I have to use the remote that comes with it and look on the screen (which is about 3m away from my bed :). Maybe the Duet controller can be somehow used, or another controller. You can use the Controller, IR remote, iPeng, etc etc. The web interface is not available if you're using it with the built in server but you can use that as well if it's connected to SBS or SN. 2. For the first time ever, the SB has a server of its own, meaning that you can also connect usb drives and sd card and you don't need a device on with the server software installed. Does this also mean you can use about any NAS, and not only select group of NAS which are compatible with it? Not yet - the current software can't connect to music stores over the network, just local via USB/SD. I would expect to see that coming though, there's a while before this thing is done! 3. There's no web interface on the Controller, so I'm not sure what you mean by that. Players have to be connected to a server. With current players that's either SqueezeNetwork/MySqueezebox.com or a local instance of the server running on a computer. Both of these have web interfaces for control. With Touch you have a third option - you can run the server on the Touch itself. In this case the web interface is disabled. Jonnio;462463 Wrote: Just look at this in comparison to the touch itself. The profit margins between the two products (from a bill of materials vs sale price perspective) is probably very similar, but I doubt the engineering cost vs sales ratios are remotely close to the same. Not to mention the continued engineering, warranty etc... Costs that the touch will incur which the bracket won't. Maybe, but I bet they sell an awful lot more Touches than wall mounts, hence the fixed initial costs have to be spread out over fewer sales. I'm probably not going to buy a wall mount, but for me it's not $100 for a piece of plastic but $399 for a wall mounted player. Cost is related to the production expense for the manufacturer, but should only really be related to the utility for the consumer. I somehow doubt that iTunes import functions rely on LAME headers for doing gapless on iPod. My understanding from when iTunes/iPod started doing gapless (which was a while ago) was that iTunes parsed the LAME headers when you imported the file and then wrote it's own tags/db entries/whatever. The iPod itself wasn't reading the headers directly.
