Yes. But please note that it will not replace a NAS with all its features.
There's no access control, no shares besides the music folder etc.

Have I understood this correctly? If I have a Squeezebox Touch into
which I have plugged a USB drive that drive becomes a network drive that
can be seen and used by any computer on the network.

So I could use the USB drive attached to Touch for storing Text Docs,
Pictures, Videos, whatever I like?

It is reasonable to expect limitations, the Touch is pretty small, and
has limited resources. I would not expect all the plug-ins.

Some of the limitations may be lifted over time.

But first, they have to finish it and ship the units.

While I was not considering the SB Touch initially, the tiny SBS feature

Besides Web UI and transcoding, are there other limitations for the

With the Touch there are two ways to run 3rd party software: as a
plugin on the server (such as happens with an SB3) and as an applet
which runs on the Touch. Many of the 3rd party plugins will have to be
written as applets which run directly on the Touch. My guess is that XM
will be an applet on the Touch and as such will not be limited by the
"no plugins" policy of the onboard server.

Possibly, but not supported and performance would most likely be
suckerific. (NFS or SMB shares are ... slow. Writing to a database
across NFS or SMB would be painfully slow).

It would work better if you used the USB connection on the Drobo and
plugged it into the Touch.

(remember that even connected, you're only running 100Mbps between the
router and the Touch, and even that isn't really true with how Ethernet
works, so you'd only get at best 60-80% utilization, and SMB in
particular is kinda sucky for heavy file accesss... NFS is a bit better,
but still they are nowhere near the speed of even USB2 which is 480Mbps,
or almost 5 times the rated speed of 100Mbps ethernet... it's not hard
at all to get 300+Mbps transfer via a USB drive... impossible to get
that on ethernet unless you move to gigabit.)

since the Touch has a version of SBS on it already, would it be possible
to hook up a Drobo to a DroboShare, connect that to a router which is in

No need, really. This SB Touch forum was set up after the device was
announced in Sept, and the beta testers read and post here, too (as
evidenced by Jim's response to your question). See for example this
thread from a couple months ago:
http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=70014. Since then the
status of ext4 may or may not have changed. As you probably know, the
delay with the SBT release is because of the software, and this is one
of the areas that is still being finalized (along with TinySBS more
generally).

My understanding is that only the 'first' partition will be indexed and
used for the music library by the Touch. I don't know the answer to the
EXT4 question, nor how would you would format the drive to control which
partition the Touch will use.

There's also the question of whether or not the Touch will be able to
sufficiently power the particular drive that you have. A number of beta
testers, myself included, have found external 2.5" drives that weren't
usable with the Touch. It will be interesting to see how that plays out
when the Touch is released.

SB's are happier when you have many.

The Touch can play from an attached drive -and- serve music to the SBR,

It can't run from the duet: not just the lack of USB... the SBR simply
does not have the CPU power or memory to support such a thing.

The Touch has a ton more memory and a much faster CPU.

Yes.

You can plug a USB hard drive into the Touch.

Doing so will start up "Tiny SBS". (It even did so when I plugged in
my cell phone to charge the other day...)

That 'Tiny SBS' is mostly the same as 'real' SBS, major points missing:
web UI and transcoding.

It will gladly act as a server for other Squeezebox type devices (ie,
SB2/3/Class/Receiver/Controller/Transporter/Boom/Radio and other
Touches...)

So, yes, you can turn off your PC and still have access to any music
that is plugged into the Touch. You'd still need a computer at some
point to rip or download new files (which you can drag to the Touch), or
to make backups (you don't want to redo everything when your HD dies)
but day to day operation doesn't need a PC.

Again, yes, a Touch can act as a server for a Duet.

Depends on what you mean by "this" as the Touch will stream to a
Receiver just fine.

If you mean that the Receiver is too dumb to run the server software
needed to do streaming, that is correct. And the Receiver doesn't have
the USB connector.

The Touch has SqueezeBox Server, which is needed for any SqueezeBox to
play your own music files. It also works as a NAS (network attached
storage) device, which I guess is what you mean by "disk station"?

So, yes, with the Touch you wouldn't need a separate computer (PC, Mac,
NAS.. ) to run the SB Server on. And your USB stick should be perfectly
fine. I don't think you even need to do a lot of installing software for
any of this to work.

The Touch is of course also a player that can be connected to any audio
system, and the touch screen can be used to control other players as
well, such as your SBR.

This is all of course what I've read here on the forum. I don't have
one myself, yet.

Regarding the SB Receiver, it won't do anything else than receive a
stream from the server and play it.

You don't need to install any software at all on the USB stick. Your
MP3 collection and that's all what is needed to be used by a Touch. ;)

[SlimDevices: Touch] Squeezebox Touch without computer or disk station?

2009-12-21 Thread Polar

Presently I am the owner of a squeezebox duet. In order to listen to my
own music collection I need either a computer or a disk station running.
I have chosen for a disk station (Synology 107+ with SSODS).

Somehow I have the feeling that things can be simplified.

I understand that the Squeezebox Touch has a USB connection.
My (MP3) music collection is about 3 GB. I own a 9 GB USB stick. It is
possible to install Linux "disk station" software, the Squeezebox Touch
software and my music collection all on a USB stick and run it from
there?
In that way I do not need a computer running or a disk station in order
to listen to my music collection. That would be the perfect solution.
The next question would be if somehting like this would be possible for
the Duet receiver, although it has no USB connection.

Maybe I see things too simple but I am interested if anybody has any
ideas.
