Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Experiencing Touch for a couple of days
The size of the database could well be the main problem.I have a Drobo with about 1.3 Tb available.I am still in the process of ripping and have used about 130Gb so far, including a few 24/96 files. These play mostly with no problems, just an occasional delay at the start when the Touch buffers.16/44.1 play with no issues at all.I guess this will change as used space gets greater. -- Ali Tait Ali Tait's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=37387 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=78211 ___ Touch mailing list Touch@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/touch

My impression is that it slows down as the size of the database gets larger. I'm expecting this to improve in later iterations of the firmware. I am also beginning to think that Tiny SC uses more CPU when managing a huge database. As I reported in another thread, I have big rebuffering problems when reading 24/96 files from a 1.5 To HDD containing 1200 albums (400 Gb used), and no problem when reading the same files from a 4 Go USB stick containing only a couple of albums (and I also have no problem reading 16/44.1 files from the big database, but perhaps even those files will be problematic when the database will double in size ?). Has someone made a comparison between different sizes of databases (using TinySC), and examined the memory / CPU usage, etc. in the different situations ? What could be the explanation ? Is there hope that it can be solved in a future release of (Tiny)SBS or is the hardware anyway too limited when using Tiny SC with a huge database ? -- rotho rotho's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=33493 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=78211 ___ Touch mailing list Touch@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/touch
Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Experiencing Touch for a couple of days
I've had a little while with the Touch as well and it's been generally positive. Here are my notes; 1) There's an increase in sound quality on all fronts; as a drive in to my DAC and from the analogue outs. 2) The touchscreen functionality and menu system works well. 3) It feels better made than the Duet. 4) Using a USB drive, it all slows down enormously. I'm using a 0.75 tb Western Digital My Passport drive with a D Link hub (for power). My impression is that it slows down as the size of the database gets larger. I'm expecting this to improve in later iterations of the firmware. 5) Installation was very quick. Barely ten minutes and it was working with the database on the PC. 6) I've had no networking problems (using Belkin N+ router). Generally very good. The only thing that really needs work is the speed of Tiny SBS with an hard disc. I wonder if anyone has tried with other types of hard drive? Is a standard 3.5 faster? -- HectorHughMunro HectorHughMunro's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=16514 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=78211 ___ Touch mailing list Touch@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/touch

To PAA, I have been posting about a similar problem - switching between usb/sd playback and internet radio. It isn't working. Your description is very exact. I would like to hear from more user: is this what we can expect. Is there no fix? I bought the Touch specifically because it do not want my computer running as a server. -- Amagerland Amagerland's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=37894 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=78211 ___ Touch mailing list Touch@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/touch

I am running a touch feed by ethernet via a vortexbox and controlled by ipeng iPod app and loving it. I bought it purely for the hi Rez capability, don't use its touch screen or it's server. Sound quality is superb ( feeding coax to mf v-dac). I think that this is one of the most cost effective ways into hi Rez music. Don't give up on the touch yet, it's early days and as we know from the other squeezebox products the software is improving with each release. -- c3p0 c3p0's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=20721 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=78211 ___ Touch mailing list Touch@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/touch

Paa;542748 Wrote: First, I have to say that I have a SB3, which has been working extremely well for the last years. It's certainly the best audio kit I have ever bought, and I had bought a lot. So I have been eagerly waiting for the Touch, especially because of the embedded server and 24/94 capability. Unfortunately, I have to say I'm having an horrible experience: - I have an external drive with 120GB of music (with its own power supply). The embedded server fails, I would say, 4 out of 5 times it tries to scan the drive. Most of the times it blocks for no obvious reason. No error messages, nothing I agree. The Touch - used as a player with an external server - works fine and gives superb audio quality. While I was able to successfully use the internal server with a 2GB flash drive, I've yet for it to fully scan my external USB drive with 46,000 songs without crashing (and I've tried 2 different drives.) The biggest frustration for me is that they delayed release four months to fix the internal server so that things would be perfect for the mass market consumer. Given the widespread problems with the internal server after that long delay, I'd sure hate to think just how persnickety Tiny SBS was last December! -- mlsstl mlsstl's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=9598 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=78211 ___ Touch mailing list Touch@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/touch

Interesting. As I said, using a Drobo directly connected,I get an occasional delay at the start of tracks playing 24/96.16/44.1 files play with no issues.Initial scan was no problem either. -- Ali Tait Ali Tait's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=37387 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=78211 ___ Touch mailing list Touch@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/touch

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Experiencing Touch for a couple of days
Well I'm getting great sound via analog or and even better via digital outs into a DAC, and the SDHC card (32GB) works great, and internet radio works perfectly, and connection to my Mac-based server is superb. USB hard connection is not ready for prime time. And switching from controlling the player using direct touch to the remote and back works fine, but switching to a player on my Mac is just about hopeless. On balance, though, I am thrilled with this thing and already bought a second one for the bedroom, and can see my days of owning a standalone CDP being numbered. The functionality that works well is flat out spectacular. Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Experiencing Touch for a couple of days
There is a distinct difference in what happens between ending one song - going to the next in playlist AND pressing the skip button. In the case of a song ending and going to the next in the playlist it starts reading the next file while the end of the current file is still playing, that way its ready to switch streams on the fly without any interruption. When you press the skip button it has to go off right now and find the file and start reading the data. It buffers some data up and starts playing it. There is a tradeoff here as to how much data it reads before starting the playback. It sounds like the system is set for reading a small amount of data so it can start playing quickly, but with hirez (or maybe hirez and flac etc) thats not really enough and the initial buffer gets emptied before it can fill the next buffer, so a stutter happens. When automatically ending one song and going to the next on the playlist its easy to grab a fair amount of data so you don't have a dropout, with the skip button it takes some tuning to get the right tradeoff between no dropouts and time you have to wait before music starts. Unfortunately that tradeoff seems to be different for different setups. For example I never have a problem with it at all, I can play -8 encoded flacs 24/96 files off the USB drive and skip between songs and never have a problem. Other people have problems when skipping ahead but not when automatically going from one to the next, and others seem to have have problems all the time no matter what. So far we haven't figured out what the differences are that cause these discrepancies in performance.
