Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Level Playing Field

I would refine that to say that Track Gain is a bad idea for classical,
or really any music that has a wide dynamic range. And by extension
LMS's Smart Gain would be a bad idea for random tracks of music -- or
playlists with single tracks from a variety of albums -- with wide DR,
although I don't know many classical buffs who go for mixed playlists.

But I don't see anything wrong with using Album Gain with classical or
other music with a wide DR. You're still preserving the DR that's in the
album, but you're just leveling out the average level from one album to
another. Granted that some entire albums are meant to be softer, but I
suspect those differences are minor compared to differences in average
levels that are purely artifacts of the production process.

This issue very much depends on the kind of music you listen to, e.g. in
"classical" music volume normalisation is a really very, very bad idea.

Almost all of my listening is via random playlists, and I've been using
Smart Gain for 5 years. ReplayGain tags have been applied either through
foobar2000 or dbPoweramp when ripping CDs. I have been extremely pleased
with the results.

Not sure, never tried. I'm assuming that choosing a folder with a single
album in it, would add the album to the active playlist, and smart gain
would see that you are playing a single album.

Nothing scientific. And I'm no engineer, but this is the way it has been
explained to me by those that are. The squeezeboxes are are getting 24/x
streams from the server. So a regular FLAC files is 16/44.1, but is
being streamed as 24/44.1. The extra 8 bits can be used in digital
volume adjustment without "losing" any bits from the 16/44.1 file. As
you start reducing the volume too much you've moved beyond the 8 bits
and may be losing quality. So my 75% is just a rule of thumb based on
all this.

I can reduce to 50% or even lower on listening to some things and not
notice any difference. So it is not that critical. But if I'm doing
"critical" listening, I set the digital volume to 100% and control
volume with preamp. But even here I still leave RG on (although it is
using Album gain at that point and intra song differences are
maintained).

p.s. I'm not sure what volume of 18 is percentage wise. I'm typically
using squeezeplay or ipeng to control and seeing percentage not the 0-?
scale on which the 18 is based.

Gary, I'm curious...how did you arrive at 75% volume? I recall a
discussion where Pippin suggested that any volume over 18 on a touch
would pass a 16/44 file with no loss.

Have you ever figured what it does if I choose a folder via the " music
folder " menu instead of an album via the album menu ? Not that I would
do it like that ,the folder could be from one album.

yep, that's the cool thing about smart gain. If one is playing only
tracks from a single album, it uses ALBUM RG values. If the playlist has
songs from more than one album, it automatically uses TRACK RG values.

yes. and if your FLAC, mp3, m4a, etc. files do not have RG tags,
foobar2000 is a very good program for adding this tag info.

What the smart volume does is effectively moving the volume up and down
.

But as their is no more bits and not more than 100% volume ( there is no
11 like in spinal tap ).

So it must equalise around a lower base level , so many tunes are played
lower a very few louder but the net result should that they are equal .

The rg tags has a track gain and an album gain , in the context of an
album some tracks should be softer and are played in the context of the
album .
In playlist there is no such concern LMS strive for an equal level on
all tracks.

Probably not , at least not as much as manipulating the file .

But it require that the file has replay gain tags otherwise LMS won't

I'd be more than shocked if you would notice it, as long as your digital
volume on the player is at 75% or higher to start with. I really like
smartgain option with my RG tags.

Use replay gain tags foobar2000 can do that no need to re-rip .

LMS has a smart gain function you can turn on .

Note that you absolutely not want to manipulate the audio in the file
get even volume level ! this can make the sound quality suck .

Also the lower sounding files are possibly older releases or actually
better sounding or both :)

Modern loudness war compressed music... is a popular topic (see zillions
off treads here and elsewhere :-/ )
