[Trisquel-users] Antwort: Trisquel 7 on a MacBook Pro 9, 1 mid 2012
Thanks for your answer. I had not so much time at the moment, so I could only try the LiveDVD with Gnome. nomodeset has the same effect as without it. noapic has the same effect plus no support for a display connected on the DisplayPort. nolapic has the same effect but with external display and without USB for a external keyboard / mouse. I will try acpi=off if I have time. The MBP uses a special EFI version and temp. things like fan control is done using Apple's SMC (System Management Controller). What I haven't checked is whether Trisquel provides the applesmc kernel module - that could also solve the problem. I know that suspend works on a Sabayon without problems.
[Trisquel-users] Re : No wifi, can't remove Mini 7
You can acquire this adapter: http://www.tp-link.com/en/products/details/?categoryid=243model=TL-WN722N It is pretty easy to find (this year, I bought one in the USA and then several in Brazil), uses the AR9271 802.11n chipset, supported by Linux-libre (hence Trisquel) out of the box, and costs less than US$ 20. An even cheaper solution would be to buy a second-hand adapter. Vendors sometimes indicate the chipset, what matters for Linux-libre's support.
[Trisquel-users] Re : bash: notify-send: command not found
Programs probably use interfaces to libnotify (that 'notify-send' uses as well). The python-notify package, for instance, is installed by default and provides such an interface for Python programs.

[Trisquel-users] Recent problem with youtube
Youtube worked fine for me just a couple of days ago. But now, I am unable to watch some videos, either with abrowser or Icecat. Some don't load at all (a message about a 'missing plugin' is displayed), others have no sound, or take too much screen space. There were some abrowser and youtube extension updates recently, and I don't think I changed anything else. Does anyone else have this problem?
Re: [Trisquel-users] Recent problem with youtube
I use ViewTube to watch videos on YouTube and other video hosts. It's working fine for me.
[Trisquel-users] Re : Recent problem with youtube
I use the HTML5 extension that is packaged with Trisquel.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Repairing Grub
Buggles, I ran into the same problem a few days ago when my btrfs partition started flaking out and was reporting that I was out of space when I wasn't. I thankfully had a 2nd hard drive to back up my system files and had to reformat as XFS and reinstall the OS. I ended up having to put the .deb files on a secondary USB stick and doing sudo dpkg -i *.deb in the folder to install Boot Repair. Since you are using Trisquel 6, you can grab them all at https://launchpad.net/~yannubuntu/+archive/ubuntu/boot-repair/+packages?field.series_filter=precise Also, if wireless is an issue like you said before, what if you also put the .deb files for your firmware from http://packages.trisquel.info/search?keywords=firmware onto a USB stick and then install? Are you also running the 3.13 kernel? If it will help, you can get the files from http://packages.trisquel.info/search?suite=defaultkeywords=linux-generic-lts-trusty
[Trisquel-users] install gcc4.9
hi I want install gcc4.9.2
Re: [Trisquel-users] Recent problem with youtube
I'm not sure what you're referring to, there is no such extension included with Trisquel. All Trisquel includes by default that's related to this is Gnash.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Recent problem with youtube
http://flavio.tordini.org/minitube works great and no need of javascript, flash, gnash or whatever. Not even a browser is needed. And it is ultrafast - I can view 1080p vids on a intel atom netbook!! Try that with flash/gnash..
[Trisquel-users] Re : Recent problem with youtube
minitube didn't work the last time I tried it (a long time ago) - will try again! Thanks.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Recent problem with youtube
make sure to install the latest .deb from the tordini's webpage (2.3 if I recall correctly). The 2.0 in the trisquel reps can't stream vids other then 360p (no 720p or fullhd - they freeze..), or at least the 2.0 doesn't work good on my hardware cheers fellow trisqelian!
Re: [Trisquel-users] F-Droid Appstore criticizes application for using non-free network service
I agree that it would be even better to host the server software myself. However, I conclude that telegram 1. isn't SaaSS 2. doesn't require non-free software to be executed on my computer 3. offers end-to-end encryption so from a privacy and freedom point of view, I don't see any problem here. Since the client is free software, I trust the community to make sure the encryption is really safe. Besides, what I've seen so far from telegram is excellent. It's basically a free version of whatsapp, which is awesome.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Recent problem with youtube
Thanks for mentioning minitube! I knew that it existed but it never worked for me and i gradually forgot about it. Five minutes ago I gave it a try and was really amazed by its speed. However, it crashed after ten minutes and I miss the option to bookmark channels. Besides it seems to be great.
[Trisquel-users] Trisquel should have a git system for the community. Hear me out.
As you know, there is the main Git repository that Ruben uses to build Trisquel. We can leave that alone and let him use it as he always has. But what if there is a hosted Git system powered by something like GitLab (https://www.gitlab.com) that community users can signup on and submit/share code? One example is me creating a free software extension for Abrowser that proves to be helpful. Instead of me hosting it on my site or GitHub, I can have it on the community GitLab instance and if it is worthwhile, it can be merged into the main code. If not, its still there for sharing. So what do you guys think? This could be helpful as there are many people who would like to develop code free software code but don't want to put it on non-free service like GitHub. With having it hosted here, there is reassurance that the backend is free and the intentions of the project are legit.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Librem 15: A Free/Libre and Open Source Laptop That Respects Your Essential Freedoms
I like that one guy has worked for trying to release a modern laptop with as less closed source software as possible. Good that Nvidia is gone. I think the new CPU alternative is for gaming performance but it includes more evil technology for globalists/government spying and control. I would prefer Nvidia and replaceable CPU and then disable Nvidia in BIOS if Coreboot allow that. All these gamers that do not seem to know the freedom part in GNU/Linux (Chris at LAS is one example). I do not know how people like Chris thinks. They love the freedom GNU/Linux gives but then ignores it all up by supporting hardware and software that goes against it. Same as he use Netflix and was happy when Netflix-DRM works in Chrome. Where goes the line of what they would not accept as closed source software? This product is marketed as Libre and not for gaming. Then do not use nvidia or CPU that has more integrated spying then needed. With the replaceable CPU socket they could choose more models. Cheaper i3 that user later could upgrade with i5 or i7 when more speed is needed.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Recent problem with youtube
smplayer is in the reps and is another option that worked flawlessly for me when I was having problems with Abrowser extensions.

Re: [Trisquel-users] Recent problem with youtube
I use youtube all html5 from the extensions repo; can say, for certain, the audio always works; video stream could be way out of sync; I'd never know; lol. Maybe there were a few vids that didn't play in the past 3 months or so; for those, I use unplug and totem.
Re: [Trisquel-users] bash: notify-send: command not found
OK. Thankyou for your co-operation
Re: [Trisquel-users] Recent problem with youtube
recent update of abrowser also installs a xul-ext-youtube-html5-video plugin which causes the large video screen issue. youtube might have made some changes so those vevo videos don't play.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Sometimes the GNOME panel doesn't load in Trisquel 6.0
Probably the panel crashes. To perhaps find out why try running it from a terminal as suggested by davidnotcoulthard. (Leave the term window open you launch the panel from and hope for a crash, then should one happen look at the term window to see a potential error message.) You can launch a terminal with Ctrl+Alt+T. Or you could take a peek at /var/log/syslog in case it contains something related and useful. (Yeah, not exactly an easy log to decipher...)
Re: [Trisquel-users] Librem 15: A Free/Libre and Open Source Laptop That Respects Your Essential Freedoms
Its not about closed source or open source, these terms shouldnt even be used here as the ignore the ethical facts of free software. https://www.gnu.org/philosophy/free-software-for-freedom.html If you are targeting the free software movement for a device, you have to realize that there will be no compromises in terms of freedom. The Librem says they are going to try to get the source code available for all bootloader functionality by prying it out of intel's hands, and that's one of the pitches of the campaign. However, I am 100% betting that if the campaign is successful, and they are unable to get the source code from the vendors, the librem will still be released even with the (seriously) nonfree blobs at its core. That will miss-represent us as a community (here's a free/libre laptop, but actually its just almost free). This laptop is not part of the free software community, specifically because it requires nonfree blobs to function at a base level. It just rubs me and other like me the wrong way, by trying to get us to back to development of something that uses our values as marketing terms. I wouldnt have such a problem with it if it were instead Opensourcem: the mostly open-source laptop, so that I would at least know, well, freedom available when convenient
[Trisquel-users] Jolla - the new freedom respecting tablet pc?
I stumbled over this campaign a minute ago: https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/jolla-tablet-world-s-first-crowdsourced-tablet First of all: I don't believe that this will be 100% freedom-respecting for sure. I come to this conclusion because the site overs very little information about how open source the device will actually going to be. So my starting point here is the question: Might it be a step up when it comes to freedom? Though I didn't read much details, this is very likely, because the current situation for tablets is *horrible* : - replicant is only available for very few devices and not a single one of them supports wifi (!) which defeats the whole purpose of a smartphone imho - besides replicant, the OS with most free components is android, but normally the devices get shipped without even granting root access to the device (!) - if you want root access, you risk bricking the device and warranty will expire - the number of free software apps is still too limited; for instance, there is no alternative to google maps at the moment I think chances are good that the tablet will improve the situation, given that it's somewhat usable. Please share your thoughts on this and also further information if you know something.
[Trisquel-users] libreoffice base error
libreoffice works fine except for base - I can't open nor create a new database.I get: The connection to the data source New Database could not be established. SQL Status: HY000 The connection to the external data source could not be established. No SDBC driver was found for the URL 'sdbc:embedded:hsqldb'. I have openjdk6 installed.. Can't figure out what is the problem :( Any help is highly appreciated!
Re: [Trisquel-users] Jolla - the new freedom respecting tablet pc?
The only one who believes this will be free as in freedom is you quantum :P Might it be a step up when it comes to freedom? No, you can even see proprietary apps on one of the images. Please share your thoughts freedom is mentioned only once in that link, and in the sentence Jolla’s core value is freedom of choice for our community. freedom of choice I give 0 points to this crap.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Librem 15: A Free/Libre and Open Source Laptop That Respects Your Essential Freedoms
Flash chips used for boot firmware usually have a write protect pin. It might be possible to configure it to make only some regions read-only, so e.g. information needed to support resume from suspend to RAM can be written. signature.asc Description: PGP signature

[Trisquel-users] Is there a system-wide http proxy set in Trisquel 7?
When I try visiting the login page on craigslist.org, and entering my credentials, then hitting the 'submit' button, I get an error 404. if I use a live image of some other distro, I can login correctly. There must be other sites that fail in this way, though I have yet to encounter one. Setting my browser settings to 'no proxy' seems not to have fixed this. Any ideas? -Dave
Re: [Trisquel-users] Jolla - the new freedom respecting tablet pc?
I can't see much of anything on the IndieGoGo page (apparently it requires JavaScript just for reading some text...), but from what I have seen, this strikes me as no better than, say, the Ouya. It's not trying to be free at all, much less more free than existing tablets. Why would you suppose that it would be more free, then? The One Laptop Per Child project says some stuff about open source, too, and incidentally, they've developed a tablet. That tablet probably isn't any worse than this one.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Jolla - the new freedom respecting tablet pc?
Well, it is the first project that aims for a open source tablet and at least talks about privacy. Since we never had something like this (or better: a project like this never succeeded so far) and the current situation for tablets is really bad, I think it's quite obvious why I hope for an improvement. So, it's the same again, I remember people telling me years ago that android was phenomenal because it is open source so you're not in a jail like with the iThings. So, what does this brings? Privacy concern? Come on, you already see proprietary apps like Skype. So where is the privacy concern? Nowhere, Is only to attract customers. I just think that an open source tablet has to be somewhat better than a normal one with android. Years ago was: A android tablet has to be somewhat better than an iPad because it's open source. yesterday: Proprietary vs open source. today: open source vs open source. maybe tomorrow we will be able to see a open source vs free as in freedom. And then I will hope for an improvement
Re: [Trisquel-users] Is there a system-wide http proxy set in Trisquel 7?
That could have been caused by the referrer settings in Abrowser up to the last release from tonight. Please try again after updating to abrowser_34.0+build2-0ubuntu0.14.04.1+7.0trisquel35
Re: [Trisquel-users] Wireless N USB Adapter (TPE-N150USB)
We have posted new firmware which works around bugs on machines with flaky USB controllers. If your experiencing connection stability issues (getting disconnected frequently) update your firmware in /lib/firmware with the following: https://www.thinkpenguin.com/files/ath9k-htc/version-1.4-beta/index.html * This firmware includes a patch which reduces the packet size. Some USB controllers don't like larger packets which is why users on some systems were experiencing frequent disconnects. This firmware has been pretty well tested already and we do recommend it to anybody experiencing issues. If you do experience any problems with it please let us know.
Re: [Trisquel-users] No wifi, can't remove Mini 7
* I'm not 100% sure this assessment is correct. While you might be right I know there are some gigabit ethernet chipsets that are dependent on non-free firmware. In theory it could be related to Trisquel, or sort-of. That is it doesn't have the non-free firmware needed which is why it isn't working.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Librem 15: A Free/Libre and Open Source Laptop That Respects Your Essential Freedoms
The problem is there really aren't any good options right now... It's a huge problem that a lot more time, energy, and money needs to go into solving than is readily available.
Re: [Trisquel-users] No wifi, can't remove Mini 7
The best thing you can do is avoid bad hardware from the start and then you won't run into these types of problems when you want to switch- or upgrade to a more recent version of your favorite distribution. No matter what distribution your using your prone to run into problems with this type of poorly supported hardware. It's dependent on code the community can't properly support as the sources aren't available. HP and Toshibia are horrible choices imho. They both do things that hinder users adoption of free software and then some. They're using digital restrictions on the wifi slot for example. That means you can't even replace it with something that is free software friendly should it not work and a significant percentage of the time systems don't ship with cards that will work with 100% free software. Other bad choices include: Dell, Sony, Apple, Acer, Lenovo, and IBM. These companies do the same.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Librem 15: A Free/Libre and Open Source Laptop That Respects Your Essential Freedoms
I watched the video the other day. He has a good sales pitch, but its nothing more. He's implying 250 laptops will essentially be enough to force Intel to release the code. This is non-sense. If they do it won't be the result of force or pressure. $250,000 is nothing in the scheme of it. Even if he was ordering 20,000 laptops (millions of dollars) it would make no difference to Intel. If your going to put pressure on Intel financially you need significant numbers. Google *might* have those numbers with the chromebooks which have sold millions. However that is no guarantee. NVIDIA refused to release code after flying 20 or so developers to China over a project which involved millions of units- yet that project ended up going with another graphics chipset because NVIDIA didn't want to release the code. People underestimate the value some companies put on keeping this code proprietary. If its going to result in the competition gaining knowledge of something it's a no-go area. Intel releases code because they've got nothing to loose in the graphics arena. Atheros does the same when they have nothing to loose and people demand it. Hoover they wouldn't do it if they thought they had something to gain from keeping it proprietary.
Re: [Trisquel-users] libreoffice base error
nevermind -solved sudo apt-get install libreoffice-sdbc-hsqldb
Re: [Trisquel-users] Laptop battery.
I believe you can install powertop (a free software utility from Intel) from Trisquel's repository if you have an Intel machine.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Librem 15: A Free/Libre and Open Source Laptop That Respects Your Essential Freedoms
Hoover they wouldn't do it if they thought they had something to gain from keeping it proprietary. sad but true. money seems to be the only universal value today for a lot of people, and it is actually going worse day to day - soon it will be the only value for ALL the people. biatches have sold out long time ago and they are actually happy with that. and they sleep well at night. better then me or you..
Re: [Trisquel-users] F-Droid Appstore criticizes application for using non-free network service

Re: [Trisquel-users] Trisquel should have a git system for the community. Hear me out.
Trisquel already has what you describe. Or have you not been paying attention? :)
Re: [Trisquel-users] Jolla - the new freedom respecting tablet pc?
Jolla is no better than Android, both are non-free, and totally permeated with with non-free software. The good bits are handcuffed to a radiator in the basement. Worse still both systems make it far too easy for even more non-free bits to slip in. Compromising is a race to the bottom. ARM based systems are a race to the bottom in general, this is why wifi doesn't work on Replicant. Its not a flaw with Replicant, its the weaknesses of the hardware.

Re: [Trisquel-users] Trisquel 7 on a MacBook Pro 9,1 mid 2012
I don't think there is another URL but here's the content (albeit unformatted) This guide is recommended only for users with considerable experience with the GNU/Linux terminal, and editing configuration files. Symptoms Your computer seems to suspend or hibernate but then hangs at some point or does not wake up. Also if your virtual terminals get messed up in the process this can help. Causes Often these problems are caused by your wifi card and/or your video card. Method Try switching off your wifi, and see if you can then suspend or hibernate. Start by suspending first, as it is the easier of the two to get right. If your wifi is the culprit, you can use the rfkill command from the rfkill package to modify the scripts at /usr/lib/pm-utils/sleep.d/ to automatically take out and restore wifi. Start by reading the suspend/hibernate log. It's at /var/log/pm-suspend.log. Sometimes it contains useful information, sometimes it tries to fool you. You might want to rename/delete the old log before starting to experiment. If that did not (completely) fix the problem, move onto the video card. Do not turn the wifi back on until your problem is solved. First, run sudo nano /etc/default/grub, add nomodeset with quotes to the line that says GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT= (don't replace what is already there) and press Ctrl-X to exit nano. Then update-grub and reboot. Make sure you got it right by checking /proc/cmdline to see nomodeset is there. Sometimes just adding the nomodeset parameter does the trick, as then the default quirks from the quirk database can be utilized. Then try to see if the default quirks were correct. If it is still not working, proceed to read the pm-suspend manual page (info pm-suspend). pm-suspend is the command your computer uses when it goes into suspend mode; the manual page describes the quirks you can try with your hardware. For some of the quirks, you will need to install the vbetool package. You may need other packages too; the log will be useful here. Then start the guesswork. For example: sudo pm-suspend --quirk-dpms-on After an unsuccessful attempt, go read the log to see what it has to say, usually not much. Then test the next quirk. Sometimes you need more than one. One quirk allowed me to suspend/hibernate but another was needed to make sure my virtual terminals wouldn't get messed up in the process. If you find a working combination, as the manual page says, edit /etc/pm/config.d/anyfile and input ADD_PARAMETERS=--quirk-dpms-on --quirk-blabla Other things You may or may not need to add a line like resume=/dev/sda5 (= your swap, see with cat /proc/swaps) to GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT in /etc/default/grub (and then update-grub) for hibernate to work. zram could make hibernate not work even if suspend does work, one dubious workaround is to give your regular swap a higher priority by adding a pri=101 to the option column in /etc/fstab. Enter swapoff -a swapon -a to apply the new priorities. Good luck and patience! Here is a forum thread about the issue. Here is an example of someone who got it to work by following this guide. If you cannot make it work You can remove the suspend and hibernate buttons from the power off dialog (in Trisquel 5.5) by adding the following text to /var/lib/polkit-1/localauthority/10-vendor.d/com.ubuntu.desktop.pkla: [Disable hibernate in power off dialog] Identity=unix-user:* Action=org.freedesktop.upower.hibernate ResultActive=no [Disable suspend in power off dialog] Identity=unix-user:* Action=org.freedesktop.upower.suspend ResultActive=no

Re: [Trisquel-users] Jolla - the new freedom respecting tablet pc?
There simply aren't that many free software friendly wifi chipsets and none of the ones used in desktops/laptops are used in tablets (broadcom and atheros are the only options for 802.11n). The tablets are pretty much all based on SoCs which require ath6k for wifi or some other driver that is dependent on non-free firmware. The graphics are potentially a bit easier to solve as there is at least one graphics chipset used in mini boards and tablets. This is the Mali-400 and Mali-450. We've been hacking on boards with them... but nothing yet to show for it... at least not a total solution.
