[TV orNotTV] Netflix Nixes Disc Spinoff
OK, it's been a month. I think we're about due for another Reed Hastings apology. Ah, here we go: http://blog.netflix.com/2011/10/dvds-will-be-staying-at-netflixcom.html It is clear that for many of our members two websites would make things more difficult, so we are going to keep Netflix as one place to go for streaming and DVDs. This means no change: one website, one account, one password… in other words, no Qwikster. Now, he won't rescind the price hikes, which they could have easily explained better with less of the doublespeak and maybe actually making the announcement after landing a big deal. (If not, then talk about all of the things you have optioned to explain why Netflix is still a good value). But pretty much the entire way Netflix mishandled the price increase (including making a non-apology and tying it to another seemingly customer-hostile move) will be discussed in business schools. -- TV or Not TV The Smartest (TV) People! I don't see any reason why it would make any more or less sense than repeating, say, the last two episodes of Glee or any other series with a continuing storyline. Fox is spending enough promoting X that I think they'll put it anywhere they think they can get an audience that hasn't seen it yet but might want to see it. It was NBC that did the if you haven't seen it, it's new to you gambit some years ago. And the guy who's currently doing the Animation Domination block promos (and I believe did the syndicated Simpsons promos) doesn't seem to work for another network. Joe Cipriano was doing Fox and CBS promos (I think doing Fox reality shows and CBS sitcoms--he's been doing CBS sitcoms for years) at the same time at one time, but I don't recall him doing any NBC work beyond announcing the Endemol game shows. The fact that Cipriano was dong those two networks makes a little more legitimate Tim Goodman's knock of Fox as CBS LIte (although I don't think it's true now compared to a few years ago, when it seemed like Fox's scripted shows beyond the Sunday cartoons were laugh track sitcoms and procedurals). -- TV or Not TV The Smartest (TV) People! Re: [TV orNotTV] An open letter to CBS from an iPad user...
Have you looked at the TV.com app (which is owned by CBS)? At least on Android, it has NCIS and Craig. -- David Risner Software Engineer MERLOT, California State University On Sun, Oct 9, 2011 at 8:21 PM, Kevin M. drunkbastar...@gmail.com wrote: Dear CBS, I'd like an iPad app please. I am a fan of some of your programing and I am unwilling to submit to the cable/satellite companies. I want to watch your programing legally on my iPad. I see you have a wide variety of apps created by your news division, and for those I thank you. However, your entertainment division is lacking an app for shows such as NCIS and The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson, two of my favorites. Both NBC and ABC have apps for their programs. Alas, Fox does not, which is a shame since Fox was once the network that skewed younger demographically and was known for cutting edge programs. But, by refusing to adopt new media methods of program distribution, Fox is now behind-the-times and disconnected from the youth of America. Is that how you want to be known, CBS? Do you recall the mockery your network endured not-too-long-ago, when jokes were made about the older audience programs like Murder She Wrote attracted? Do you want to go back to that? No, of course not. Which is why you must immediately commit to the task of designing and releasing an iPad app. Do it to prove how modern you are. Do it to give people the chance to discover your programing who otherwise might miss out (I'd never have watched PanAm were it not for the ABC iPad app... who knows... I could have chosen one of CBS's fine programs instead if the CBS app already existed). Do it and then stick it in Fox's face that they are now the last of the old fogies. Sincerely, -- Kevin M. Fox has a little more flexibility in their Sunday night schedule than they do in their Monday night schedule, with a variable-length postgame show and then a lineup of half-hour shows -- not to mention a more definite end time (it's VERY rare for NFL coverage to run past 8:00). I would have assumed, given the ending time of the game, that they would have held one show or the other for 9:00 and aired a re-run on the west coast. Given the overall high-profile nature of Terra Nova, and the fact that House was the main show they were promoting during the NFL yesterday, I didn't think they'd give up on them that early (although I do wonder what the cutoff time would have been to cut one of them if the game kept going). And, of course, they only had about 24 hours notice that they would even be carrying a baseball game this afternoon; what was scheduled for tonight (and what was being promoted yesterday) might have been different if the game had been scheduled for today all along. -- Jim Ellwanger train...@ellwanger.tv http://www.ellwanger.tv/ -- TV or Not TV The Smartest (TV) People! [TV orNotTV] Craig's episode with Arthur aired tonight
Shortly after 10:30 p.m. (French time) this evening, Ce Soir Avec Arthur premiered its first epsiode of a new season with the appearance of the Scottish Conan Guy himself. Eddie Izzard was also a guest, along with others that the more Francophilic members of the list may know. In a gesture which likely generates part of the hate directed at Arthur from this side of the pond, most video of the episode available online consists of the promos that have been circulating since the program was shot in June. Arthur, or his producers, or his network, are very vigilant about non-authorized video put online. They even had CBS take down from their website the segments of Craig's show where the extent of Arthur's 'homage' were first shown. I would expect the folks at RSA News (www.rsanews.com) to have collected as much of the press on this as possible, via quotes and/or pointers. David -- TV or Not TV The Smartest (TV) People! The same behavior, of course, occurs on BBCA's airings of Top Gear. For some reason, the folks at Discovery Communications have a real stick up their arse when it comes to the word 'cock'. I think the only time I can recall it NOT being bleeped on Top Gear was in the xmas special a few years ago - the presenters were demonstrating how adding a luxury badge to any product instantly makes the price skyrocket, and they achieve this by judicious use of a plate of sick with a BMW badge, a wizard's sleeve bearing the Ferrari marque, a pork sword (like in a Brazilian steakhouse - marque not identified) and, yes, a decorative chicken bearing the Audi rings. -- TV or Not TV The Smartest (TV) People!
