Re: [TV orNotTV] TCA gives out awards

2015-08-13 Thread Michael
A few people that I know remarked on Corden's resemblance to Richter right
after the former got The Late Show, but it soon became an afterthought.
Always liked Richter and mused on how he might feel when a guy who
resembled him became a late-night host while he remained a sidekick.
Ultimately, I wish that one of Richter's sitcoms had stuck. Really liked
them both.

I'm calling him the Tubby Kid since that what David

[TV orNotTV] Sesame Street cut in half

2015-08-13 Thread jdinan
Last fall, PBS quietly unveiled a half-hour edition of Sesame Street that
aired hand-in-hand with the original 60-minute version. The
30-minute edition was essentially a condensed version of the original, with
most of the show's second half (primarily all Elmo, all the time) removed.

Now, the 60-minute version will be gone altogether come mid-November, as
PBS and Sesame Workshop have opted to go just with the 30-minute version,
citing the usual changing viewer habits and positive affiliate reaction
reasons ...

http://current.org/2015/08/pbs-will-drop-hourlong-sesame-street-from-fall-schedule/

I'm the father of a soon-to-be pre-kindergartner, and she lost interest in
Sesame Street over the course of the last year. But when she did watch,
I noticed she did not have any interest in watching the full hour. Her
preference was watching segments that interested her -- she was more
enthralled in watching, say, a two-minute lesson on letters and numbers
than a 20-minute Elmo fest. When Elmo or another character/segment she
didn't care for popped up, we'd leave the room to color, read, or some
other activity.

Some of those YouTube videos are full-length episodes - but with slight
edits for rights reasons. Usually what's edited out is the play-on music
the band plays when the guests make their entrance. It'll be interesting to
see how much of that survives on Antenna TV.

Re: [TV orNotTV] Sesame Street cut in half

2015-08-13 Thread Mark Jeffries
Here's a bunch of tweets collected by Current on the news:

http://current.org/2015/08/c-is-for-capitalism-reactions-to-the-sesame-street-hbo-deal/

Several tweets mention the irony of the fact that a series that was created
to teach the poor basic letters and numbers skills is now only available
to the rich (which is not necessarily true, but hey).

The comment in the top post from the PBS station manager in Seattle makes a
more important point--that the bulk of PBS Kids programming over the last
decade has become animated instead of live-action, which is a big change
from the PBS lineup many of us knew and loved. I realize that at least
most big city PBS stations are now wall-to-wall kids from early morning to
BBC/NBR/NewsHour time and that animated programming is cheaper than
live action, but the PBS difference outside of the emphasis on education
WAS Mister Rogers, The Sesame Street humans, The Electric Company cast
and the ZOOM kids. That's gone now (not to mention the fact that credits
are now squeezed back for promos--and I realize that the target audience
can't read 'em anyway).

Last fall, PBS quietly unveiled a half-hour edition of Sesame Street

30-minute edition was essentially a condensed version of the original, with
most of the show's second half (primarily all Elmo, all the time) removed.

Now, the 60-minute version will be gone altogether come mid-November, as
PBS and Sesame Workshop have opted to go just with the 30-minute version,
citing the usual changing viewer habits and positive affiliate reaction
 reasons ...

 http://current.org/2015/08/pbs-will-drop-hourlong-sesame-street-from-fall-schedule/

I'm the father of a soon-to-be pre-kindergartner, and she lost interest
in Sesame Street over the course of the last year. But when she did
watch, I noticed she did not have any interest in watching the full hour.
Her preference was watching segments that interested her -- she was more
enthralled in watching, say, a two-minute lesson on letters and numbers
than a 20-minute Elmo fest. When Elmo or another character/segment she
didn't care for popped up, we'd leave the room to color, read, or some
 other activity.

Johnny Carson Returns: Antenna TV to Air Full ‘Tonight Show’ Episodes
 (EXCLUSIVE)
 August 12, 2015 | 06:00AM PT
 Cynthia Littleton
 Managing Editor: Television @Variety_Cynthia

Just when it seemed the late-night landscape couldn’t get more
 competitive, here comes Johnny Carson.

Tribune Media’s Antenna TV, the multicast digital channel devoted to
vintage television shows, will run full-length episodes of “The Tonight
Show Starring Johnny Carson” nightly at 11 p.m. ET/8 p.m. PT starting Jan.
 1.

Antenna TV has struck a multi-year deal with Carson Entertainment Group to
license hundreds of hours of the NBC late-night institution. Antenna will
run episodes that aired from 1972 through the end of Carson’s 30-year reign
in in 1992. Because NBC owns the rights to “The Tonight Show” moniker,
Antenna TV’s episodes will be billed simply as “Johnny Carson.”

“This is not a clip show. This is full episodes of Johnny Carson, the man
that everyone in late-night agrees was the greatest host of all time,
airing in real time as he did back in the day,” Sean Compton, Tribune’s
president of strategic programming and acquisitions, told Variety. “Tuning
in to ‘The Tonight Show’ is like taking a walk down Main Street in
Disneyland. The minute you step in there, you feel good and you know it’s a
place you want to stay. We cannot wait to bring this show to fans who
remember Carson and to a new generation of viewers who have never had the
chance to see Johnny in his prime.”

Antenna’s showcase will mark the first time Carson-era “Tonight Show”
episodes have aired on a nightly basis since the host signed off in May
1992. Carson stayed out of the spotlight after his retirement until his
death at age 79 on Jan. 23, 2005.

“The Tonight Show” ran in a 90-minute format from the start of Carson’s
run in 1962 until 1980, when it was trimmed to an hour. Antenna will air
hourlong episodes on weeknights and 90-minute installments on Saturday and
 Sunday at 10 p.m. ET/7 p.m. PT.

The scheduling of episodes will be carefully curated to run as themed
weeks or months, as well as episodes that coincide with notable
anniversaries, holidays and other milestones. Those could include
everything from a week’s worth of “Tonight Show” debuts by future comedy
superstars such as Jerry Seinfeld, Jay Leno, Ellen DeGeneres, Richard
Pryor, David Letterman, Jim Carrey and Tim Allen to a month of Christmas
episodes in December. Antenna’s “Tonight Show” run will begin with the New
Year’s Day episode from 1982 featuring Eddie Murphy and “MASH” star McLean
 Stevenson.

With all the hubbub over changes in late-night TV during the past two
years, Compton had the idea to revive Carson’s “Tonight Show” in a big way.
Carson Entertainment Group, headed by Jeff Sotzing, Carson’s nephew, was
 immediately receptive.

“I think there’s a demographic out there that is really going to eat this
up,” Sotzing told Variety. “The show will now be able to be seen by so many
people who haven’t seen it before.”

The deal involved nearly six months of negotiations with Hollywood’s
talent guilds and the American Federation of Musicians. The talks were
complicated because there’s not much precedent for residual fees for
full-length reruns of a vintage variety show re-airing on a digital
broadcast channel. A few weeks ago the deal almost fell apart over cost
issues that seemed insurmountable, but Compton and his team kept hammering
 away until compromises were reached.

Tribune execs are determined to keep each episode as intact as possible —
which means negotiating new agreements for the show’s many musical
performances on an episode-by-episode basis, in most cases.

The full-length segs will re-introduce viewers to the show that cemented
the template for the late-night talk-variety format, from the monologue to
goofy banter with sidekicks to showcasing promising comedians. Carson also
invented a host of characters over the years, including Carnac the
Magnificent, Art Fern and Aunt Blabby, as well the leading the “Mighty
Carson Art Players” sketches. Carson, Ed McMahon and bandleader Doc
Severinsen were also famous for doing in-program commericals. Tribune’s
sales department is looking to set up creative sponsorship deals
piggybacking on those now-priceless integrations, Compton said.

Carson Entertainment has marketed home video releases of full-length
“Tonight Show” episodes in the past. But that’s not the same as being able
to tune in every night as the show originally aired.

Sadly, the first 10 years of Carson’s “Tonight Show” are lost to history,
 with only a handful of

Re: [TV orNotTV] TNT or Comcast PGA West Coast Time Problem?

2015-08-13 Thread David Risner
My TiVo shows 11am-5pm. I'm on Time Warner Cable in SoCal. TiVo might not
get it's data from the same place as TWC, but the TWC TV app shows 11am-5pm
as well.

Doesn't Comcast have an XFinity app that shows live TV that you could look
at its guide? It might give you a clue at least as to if Comcast knew and
just didn't push the update out to the DVRs or not.

right to me, and sure enough when I checked the PGA website, those were the
eastern time zone times. I waited till after midnight and checked again, in
case this was when they updated their listings, still no change. I went
ahead and set my recording for Supernatural (whatever that is), the
program TNT listed as starting at 11:00 am my time, and then padded it two
hours to reach till 2:00, then recorded the 2:00 pm PGA still listed. This
worked fine, and I have been watching the tournament while doing my work
this morning and afternoon. It is now after 2:00 pm PT, and TNT never did
change their listings. If I had not been paying close attention, I would
 have been screwed.

I realize that Comcast just gives us the ET TNT feed, but I don't remember
this problem when I am recording NBA games - if the Lakers are scheduled to
play a 7:00 pm game in Los Angeles, even though that is 10:00 pm in NY, on
my listing it says that the game starts at 7:00. Is this a problem on TNT's
end, or something that Comcast is not doing right?

Re: [TV orNotTV] Sesame Street cut in half

2015-08-13 Thread Ben Combee
As someone consuming a lot of PBS Kids programming right now (mostly
by DVR with the little one), I will note that while most of the
programming is animated, they're doing a fair amount of live-action
interstitial, and they do have some newer series like Odd Squad that
are mostly live-action with (bad) special effects added.

There's some TERRIBLE computer animation (I'm looking at you, Sid the
Science Kid), but a lot of it is passible. Curious George has been
high quality, and Daniel Tiger's Neighborhood has great content
combined with creative (but stuff) CG.

I wonder what the cost difference is? Set construction? Group
performance time instead of flexibly scheduled voice recording?
Union-set rates and residuals?

Several tweets mention the irony of the fact that a series that was created
to teach the poor basic letters and numbers skills is now only available to
the rich (which is not necessarily true, but hey).

The comment in the top post from the PBS station manager in Seattle makes a
more important point--that the bulk of PBS Kids programming over the last
decade has become animated instead of live-action, which is a big change
from the PBS lineup many of us knew and loved. I realize that at least most
big city PBS stations are now wall-to-wall kids from early morning to
BBC/NBR/NewsHour time and that animated programming is cheaper than live
action, but the PBS difference outside of the emphasis on education WAS
Mister Rogers, The Sesame Street humans, The Electric Company cast and
the ZOOM kids. That's gone now (not to mention the fact that credits are
now squeezed back for promos--and I realize that the target audience can't
 read 'em anyway).

Now, the 60-minute version will be gone altogether come mid-November, as
PBS and Sesame Workshop have opted to go just with the 30-minute version,

I'm the father of a soon-to-be pre-kindergartner, and she lost interest
in Sesame Street over the course of the last year. But when she did
watch, I noticed she did not have any interest in watching the full hour.
Her preference was watching segments that interested her -- she was more
enthralled in watching, say, a two-minute lesson on letters and numbers than
a 20-minute Elmo fest. When Elmo or another character/segment she didn't
care for popped up, we'd leave the room to color, read, or some other
 activity.

Of the big four classic channels (MeTV, Cozi, and Retro being the other

Re: [TV orNotTV] Sesame Street Moves To HBO

2015-08-13 Thread Joe Hass
The head of Sesame Workshop mentioned that when he shopped the idea around,
the non-negotiable was that the shows had to end up at PBS at some point.

http://current.org/2015/08/hbo-to-premiere-new-sesame-street-shows-provide-them-for-free-to-pbs-in-5-year-deal/

And after reading the article, you're right. As someone noted: any new
Sesame Street is always greater than no new Sesame Street.

Re: [TV orNotTV] Johnny Carson Returns: Antenna TV to Air Full ‘Tonight Show’ Episodes

2015-08-13 Thread 'Dave Sikula' via TVorNotTV
Allen's version was called The Question Man (as was Ernie Kovacs's), but
Allen gives credit for originating the concept to an LA disc jockey named
Bob Arbogast: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wrO14lZ7QNc Wiki sez that it
was a parody of a radio show called The Answer an, but Allen doesn't
acknowledge that: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Answer_Man

Johnny Carson Returns: Antenna TV to Air Full ‘Tonight Show’ Episodes
 (EXCLUSIVE)
 August 12, 2015 | 06:00AM PT

The full-length segs will re-introduce viewers to the show that cemented
the template for the late-night talk-variety format, from the monologue to
goofy banter with sidekicks to showcasing promising comedians. Carson also
invented a host of characters over the years, including Carnac the
Magnificent, Art Fern and Aunt Blabby, as well the leading the “Mighty
 Carson Art Players” sketches.

I know that Carson borrowed the characters of Art Fern from Jackie
Gleason and Aunt Blabby from Jonathan Winters. I also know that Carnac was
a borrowed character but I can't remember if was from Steve Allen.

Two things I take from reading this press release: first, the Tonight show
archive is depreciating in value. Carson Entertainment has guarded their
content and licensed it at a premium. They might have done well by
releasing DVD sets and the little licensing they did but that value is
dropping as older fans are no longer shelling out money and younger people
neither know nor care about that era of the Tonight Show. While airing the
reruns on older-skewing Antenna keeps the show from losing all value due to
obscurity, I don't know if that is enough to get it in front of younger
people. Even though they have music rights, Johnny did not like rock acts
and rarely had them on the show. There will be no equivalent to the PBS
pledge Ed Sullivan collection of classic rock acts of that era.

The second thing is that Tribune successfully negotiated music rights at a
price Antenna TV could afford. Through the DVD era that was such an
obstacle to getting variety shows on DVD. I'm still waiting for the later
seasons of The Muppet Show. I will take this deal as a hopeful sign that
the rights holders see more value in getting those old sets back on the air
rather than watch them drift into obscurity due to high rights fees.

[TV orNotTV] TNT or Comcast PGA West Coast Time Problem?

2015-08-13 Thread PGage
Last night I set my DVR to record the first round of the PGA Tournament
today. It is being played in Wisconsin, and TNT had it listed as running
from 2:00 pm to 8:00 pm, my time (California). This just did not sound
right to me, and sure enough when I checked the PGA website, those were the
eastern time zone times.

[TV orNotTV] Re: Sesame Street cut in half

2015-08-13 Thread jdinan

Sesame Street is now brought to you by the letters H, B and O , and the
 number 5.

Sesame Workshop has signed a five-year deal with HBO, bringing the series
to pay-cabler for 36 new episodes per season (PBS will then air the
episodes nine months after the shows air). HBO will also air a spinoff
focusing on the Sesame Muppets and apparently air reruns of The Electric
Company (the 2009 reboot, not the 70s version with Morgan Freeman and Rita
Moreno) ...
