Our CFO likes Sage MAS 90. The trick is finding a decent consultant that
knows what he's doing. I hear more recent versions run on top of MS SQL
Server, although ours does not, and its quite a chunk of change to get the
upgrade.
http://na.sage.com/sage-100-erp

We never did try and get it working for anything other than Payable and
General Ledger though- which it does pretty well if your only requirement is
Batch Updating or importing the data every night. If you import large
amounts of data at a time, it tends to be slower than molasses, although I
suspect this is because the guys that did the original setup were not very
skilled

I imagine if you got the SQL server version you could do some fancy stuff
with mv.net, and real time updates...

Out of curiosity, what industry are you in?
I did know of a group in Orlando FL, that had some Accounting software built
in Accuterm GUI for the Automotive industry that runs natively on Universe.

We used to have a Pick general ledger software package called FMS that
was sold by Price Waterhouse. At some point the software was purchased
by a company named IDEAS. In 2004, they stopped supporting the Pick
version and migrated us to a client-server package that uses MS SQL as
the underlying database. IDEAS is now owned by a company that services
the oil and gas industry (which is not the industry we're in) and future
support of the software is less than certain, so we're exploring other
options. Can anyone recommend a good GL system? It doesn't necessarily
need to be Pick-based, but either UV or MS SQL as the database would be
preferred. We currently export the UV GL data as a flat csv file at the
end of the month and import it into IDEAS.

Thanks,

[U2] File Sizing using concurrent option AND FAREWELL

2012-05-23 Thread iggchamp

Hi All,

uv 10.2.7 / hpux 11.11

First things first (skip this section if you don't care for goodbyes)...

I wanted to say thanks to all of the contributors to this list.  I have learned
a tremendous amount from all of you.  The passion that many of you have for
your work is really inspiring.  I am being moved to our corporate office to
join a team of 10 who will be learning, configuring, and customizing SAP to
meet the needs of the best wine and spirits distribution company  in the
world.  Ok, I'm a little partial...   All of you deserve a great deal of credit
for my opportunity as you have all contributed to the things that I've been
able to accomplish with my current system.  Without the great system that we
here in Illinois have developed, I'm sure that noone would trust in my
abilities to deliver in a different environment.

Tony Gravagno ( http://www.nebula-rnd.com/ ):  When each division of SWS was

units to our business systems, I was terrified.  I had never had the
opportunity to work with web technology and, based on a heavy workload, did not
have the time to dive in at that time.  I did take the web developer that
Universe offered for a spin.  Pretty cool tool.  While I was able to develop a
web service that could work had I set the requirements myself, I could not get
it to meet the requirements that corporate was developed.  I even worked with
one of the IBM engineers and he could not get it done.  Keep in mind that I
have always believed in my abilities to provide solid solutions using the tools
that we have in the multivalue world.  It killed me to have to bring in a
resource from the outside.  I swallowed my pride and turned to Tony.  I was
amazed at the incredible service that he provided.  He developed a service for
me that has been rock solid.  I am still amazed that I have never had to
revisit it after years of pounding by our sales force.  This is plug, play, and
forget about it at its best!  Not only that but our web service which provides
incredibly powerful and complicated pricing blows the web service developed on
our corporate as400 system out of the water from a performance standpoint.
Thanks Tony, you've made me look a lot better than I really am :)

performance have really helped me to ensure that our system is always operating
at a high level.  I wish I could get everyone around here to read it.  I was
also fortunate enough to have been allowed to use your file maintenance product
- FAST.  I can't tell you how much time that this saved me.  When I first
arrived at this company, all the files were dynamic.   I made the mistake of
converting them all to static because I believed the performance was much
better.  I was right and the system was screaming.  The reason I use mistake
is that it  brought me into a whole new world of ensuring the thousands of
files used by the application continued to perform by spending all my weekends
sizing.  Yuck! By allowing me to break away from managing the monster that I
had created by using your product, I had my weekends free again.  Yay!  Not
only that, your product was doing a much better job than I ever did.
Unfortunately, budgets were cut and  I could no longer continue to use it.
Thanks Jeff, you helped me to spend my time moving the company forward by
developing great tools rather than maintaining files.

FILE SIZING question:

As mentioned, I'm moving on.  Before leaving I'm trying my best to ease the
burden on my friends  here in Illinois by automating many of the things that I
never got around to doing for myself .  That being said, I put together a
routine that will analyze our files and resize as necessary.  It's pretty slick
but not near the software offered by fitzlong.com - refer to previous section.

I would like to set it up to execute from cron so that noone has to babysit.
Being the scaredy cat that I am, I've always phantomed off the process and
monitored over the weekend to ensure that noone is accessing the files in
question.  I put the CONCURRENT option in there as a safeguard but never really
trusted it enough to turn the program loose without policing.

My questions regarding CONCURRENT  are these:

1.   Is the option trustworthy enough to use on a live system while users
are possibly accessing the files?
2. Are there any sort of performance issues?  In other words, would a file
that takes 2 hours to size take 8 hours to size while users are accessing?  The
routine keeps a history of various statistics including how much time it took
to do its business.

Re: [U2] File Sizing using concurrent option AND FAREWELL

2012-05-23 Thread Doug Averch
We use CONCURRENT option all of the time on Linux and Unix boxes with our
XLr8Resizer tool for either Unidata or Universe. By the way, concurrent
option does not work on Windows yet.

We did not see a performance hit resizing multi-gigabyte file while 50
users were logged in and accessing it. When you start resizing over 5
files using the CONCURRENT option simultaneously using different thread
option in our XLr8Resizer product, there was a big performance hit. This

All of the other sites are running on an as400.  Funny that they have tons of
developers, system admins, etc and we kick the snot out of them with just 4
developers.   We had meetings a few years ago where we discussed going to a
single system and our system was voted best practice and best performing in 90
percent of the areas reference.  MV kicks A**!   I'm really going to miss it
but I can't pass up the opportunity.

There are a few developers that worked for me.  I've also made arrangements
with a friend of mine to step in when things get to be too much for them.

Ya know, if you keep this up, noone is ever going to answer my questions,
right? :)

[U2] matrix dimension

2012-05-23 Thread Jeffrey Butera

I don't work with MATrices much in Unidata.

If I have my hands on a matrix setup from another program is there a
function to determine it's dimensions? My reading of DIM doesn't
indicate it can do this and I don't see anything in the various MAT...
commands that looks promising.

DIM SMALL.ARRAY(9)

Not an expert in U2 so this could be stupid.. I'm using DIGEST and OCONV to
produce a hex digest of plain-text passwords as users enter them. Passwords
created through external sources are SHA256 so I was wondering if there is
a way to get that to happen in UniBasic?

PRSLT = DIGEST('sha1',PWD,1,PDIGEST)
PHASH = OCONV(PDIGEST, 'MX0C')

2012-05-23 Thread Oaks, Harold
It was a Company in Portland Oregon, here where I live. The Shane
Company, a jeweler. Used to run a lot of local radio ads, then the ads
suddenly stopped. Turns out they went bankrupt. In bankruptcy
proceedings they mainly blamed the costs incurred by the SAP system
brought in to replace their in-house customized Universe-based system.
The SAP implementation was supposed to cost $8 million, but costs were
near $19 million when the company went out of business. I the
bankruptcy proceedings the company mainly blamed the SAP implementation.
After bankruptcy they resurfaced, which we know as the radio ads came
back on a few months ago after being off about a year. However - the
ads have stopped again. Perhaps they are just saving advertising
dollars for now? Or is it worse?

But what really burns me up: I did a google search on this very thing 2
days ago and came across a blogger who was defending SAP, his deal was
that the install failure was Shane Company's upper management's fault.
G!!! If any company agrees to pay $8 MILLION dollars for a system,
the vendor had better provide all the help needed to get the system up
and running successfully or that vendor has failed.

How about you MV providers, do you ever help the customers do an
installation? Or do you take the money and let 'em do the best they
can? And if they fail, it's their fault??

I'm just rehashing what I've read. I'd really like to hear from one of
the programmers or analysts that worked for the Shane Company when all
this happened. Are you out there?

An even more damaging a story, if possible, is the implementation of SAP
to serve the City of Portland (once again, my home city, but this time
it involves my tax dollars). I don't know too many details except that
it was supposed to unify 19 separate systems into one, and
implementation was to cost about $20 million (already outrageous), but
one attempt under an outside SAP implementation specialist failed, a
second implementer hired from way out of town also failed, finally SAP
themselves came in (where were they all this time?) and it seems finally
got the job done. Cost at this point: almost FIFTY MILLION DOLLARS
(actually about 48.6 million, but what's an extra 1.4 million dollars?)
I recently asked a high-up analyst in the police department how the SAP
implementation was doing, and they said, Oh - OK I guess - there are
still some problems.

Thanks for listening-

2012-05-23 Thread Ross Ferris
Unfortunately the support organization we used to operate with in the USA is no
more. If you didn't mind the fact that support would be remote (Australia),
our Visage R5 General Ledger Financial Reporting packages might fit the bill.

These can be deployed stand alone (ie: without our full ERP offering), though
of course you would need to develop interfaces from your subsidiary ledger
systems as required -- reasonably straight forward, just throw records into a
file pass a select list to our POST routine.
There is also scope to include additional modules that you may consider part of
the General Ledger banner (eg: Asset Register, Bank Reconciliation/Treasury
etc.) if appropriate, now or in the future.

Our enquiries typically support drilling through to source transactions, so
there may need to be some work done to provide that capability into your
existing systems

Multi-currency is fully supported if required, as well as multiple
consolidations across within corporate boundaries if required. Beyond the
basic manual journals auto-reversing accruals there are variety of ratio
posting options.

Whilst we offer our solution via the cloud, we can also provide on-premise,
which I assume is probably what you are after?

We used to have a Pick general ledger software package called FMS that was sold
by Price Waterhouse. At some point the software was purchased by a company
named IDEAS. In 2004, they stopped supporting the Pick version and migrated us
to a client-server package that uses MS SQL as the underlying database. IDEAS
is now owned by a company that services the oil and gas industry (which is not
the industry we're in) and future support of the software is less than certain,
so we're exploring other options. Can anyone recommend a good GL system? It
doesn't necessarily need to be Pick-based, but either UV or MS SQL as the
database would be preferred. We currently export the UV GL data as a flat csv
file at the end of the month and import it into IDEAS.

Thanks,
John
