Re: [U2] [UD] Downed filesystems killing 'udt' sessions
Andy, Not only can it hang, it can coredump smm and you'll have to restart Unidata. This happenned to us yesterday on a production server with 450+ users and 3 other systems connected via nfa, very painfull. Starts by nfa and new sessions hanging up and then no new connections are possible. We are on Unidata 6.1.17 and AIX 5.3. It is supposed to be fixed in version 7, maybe the core dump scenario is fixed. Don't know of any way to manipulate this process, its under the covers. Re: [U2] UD Resize Dynamic Files
Hello. This is an irritation for us as well. Unidata resizes a dynamic file in the directory that it also resides, causing you to need alot of space to resize. TMPPATH would be nice or if it defaulted to whatever TMP is in udtconfig you can change the TMP path and stop and start Unidata to use whatever area you'd like. RE: [U2] Have you ever seen this?
Hello all, Not sure of all the details on this issue. Do we know what was done or running, system wide, just before this occurred? Upgrade? any back ground jobs, phantoms or cron? Another thing that will cause this is an aborted resize. If you start a resize and abort it, after it has competed the rsz* work file, but before it has recreated and copied the records back into the original file, it will leave a 0 byte file. I just tested this and verified it. cat >/path/to/file or >/path/to/file will do this, but is a manually performed act and should be easily searched for in existing scripts, programs, or in users command stacjs in Unidata or in the users unix shell history. Jeff, We also are a 24/7 shop and we use Tivoli Storage Manager and just back up Unidata hot. What happens is that some very active files will have errors when restored and we simply run fixfile, fixgroup, etc to throw out the incomplete records. This is not perfect, but gets us 99% of the way. Or you could mirror your data, break off the mirror, backup the mirror and then resync the mirrors. How would memory segments be controlled if a user's process ran away with memory? Is there a limit that can still be placed per session? Could we now set the size of each segment and limit the number? We'd like to lower the size and tune the number. Also, the 2gig file limit is now gone as well, correct? If so, is there a point when a static file is too large to manage or that performance is better on multiple dynamic file part files instead of one large file? Keep in mind that due to our data, the only reason we use dynamic files is to get around the 2 gig limitation in 32bit and that our files never split or merge unless we clear one. Also, guide reports recommendations on static files for new sizing. Thanks. (this was released in late March) All previous UniData ports on AIX were 32-bit ports. They run fine on 64-bit OS, but have shared memory limitations (attach 11 segments to a process, etc). We have produced this 64-bit port to specifically remove the shared memory limitations. I drove this around a bit with an RFS system buffer of 3GB and forced 50 private segment attachments to boot. This should resolve a lot of tuning headaches for UniData/AIX users. RE: [U2] Resizing All Files in a System
Kevin, Keep in mind, you still need a "quiet" database or you'll have numerous file access or corruption issues if processes try to access the file(s) while you reseize. Also, you need to be sure to monitor temp space or multiple resizes can fill it up and fail. Dynamics use the local space, so you need to treat those differently. I looked at FAST, but due to several limitations, it was not going to work in our environment. I created my own program, using guide -r for recommendations, that only resizes static files 200meg and under, checks temp space before and after(using the new sizing numbers), redirects the resizes to an area with enough free space. Dynamics and large files are done manually. I also stop and start Unidata, locking out all access to the accounts, rerun guide when I am done to check for corruption, and only resize files in overflow, never downsizing a file automatically. There is alot to think about and I'd look long and hard at tools like FAST before using them as a cure all, may be a good tool, but I'd be prepared for alot of monitoring and manual intervention. Good luck! When we used Pick D3, we could run a process which would store the mod to use on restore in the file definition item. If we did a full system file save and restore, the files would be recreated with the "new and improved" mod. We use to do this on a fairly regular basis, but since changing to UniData, we haven't really addressed this. I know I can use guide to get suggested resizing, and that I can use memresize to actually resize an individual file, but is there a way to do this system wide? We are considering migrating to a newer machine, and since we would have a system with no users on it for a while, it seems to be the best time to implement a massive update. Pointers to the correct manual would be appreciated, or a brief summary. I'm certain that this has been discussed before, but I couldn't find it in the archives. --Tom Pellitieri Century Equipment Toledo, Ohio --- u2-users mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] To unsubscribe please visit http://listserver.u2ug.org/ --- u2-users mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] To unsubscribe please visit http://listserver.u2ug.org/ --- u2-users mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] To unsubscribe please visit http://listserver.u2ug.org/
Re: [U2] Memresize failed
Hello. Your are missing "DYNAMIC" on the end of your memresize command, it is trying to create a "static" 2,966,503,424 size file. It fails at alittle over 2 gig and your at nearly 3 gig. Rerun with: memresize TRANSACTION.DETAILS 181061,1 DYNAMIC. kafsat taiyus <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Sent by: [EMAIL PROTECTED] 10/14/2004 05:36 AM Please respond to u2-users To: "'[EMAIL PROTECTED]'" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> cc: Subject:[U2] Memresize failed Hi, We are running Unidata 5.1 on Tru64 UNIX. RE: [U2] Need some help with guide
You can run guide -r UDT_GUIDE, this will report on all of you files and place the info in the Unidata file UDT_GUIDE. Be sure to clear the UDT_GUIDE file of old data firs or you may have files in the UDT_GUIDE file that no longer exist. You can perform this for one file by running guide -r UDT_GUIDE. I run this weekly to report on all overflow files and large static files approaching the 2 gig limit. Good luck! RE: [U2] Static file blows 2 gig file system limit.
Wally, How is this addressed in 6.0.8? The 2 gig limit is a hard limit, set also by the OS isn't it? Wally Terhune <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Sent by: [EMAIL PROTECTED] 08/10/2004 02:47 PM Please respond to u2-users To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] cc: Subject:RE: [U2] Static file blows 2 gig file system limit. This problem should no longer occur with UniData 6.0.8 or later. Also - once you have truncated the file back down to an even multiple of the blocksize and can open it, there is rarely any additional physical file corruption. With fairly recent versions of UniData, the error message tells you exactly what the problem is and the block size of the file. Or, you can use 'fileview -p1 FILENAME' from the shell to see the block size to use with the dd command.
