[ubuntu-art] The Wiki for Theme Development - eg New Wave

2008-05-07 Thread Who
Hi all,

This is just a quick request that images, code, gtkrcs, etc end up on
the wiki, rather than places like imageshack and wherever else the New
Wave stuff is going

1. We can track progress, easily find and refer to older links/images
2. Some of the ads on the sites being used are NSFW!
3. Puts allows people NOT on the list to stumble accross or find theme
information easily
4. Any image format allowed.

Adding an image is as simple as putting attachment:filename.png in the
page. I normally then preview the page, middle click on the link
saying 'upload new attachment' (to open it in a new tab), upload the
image and preview the page from the original tab again.

To keep things organised use
Artwork/Incoming/Intrepid// (eg
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Artwork/Incoming/Intrepid/NewWave)

Although it's not in the right place,
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Artwork/Incoming/Blubuntu worked well...

Nice to see energy and themeing now filling the list!

[ubuntu-art] New Wave Metacity

2008-05-07 Thread Giuseppe Pennisi
I'm trying to make a metacity theme for New Wave Theme.

At moment it's my work:
http://img169.imageshack.us/my.php?image=newwavemetacity1cv1.png

http://img116.imageshack.us/my.php?image=newwavemetacitypressedbf1.png

http://img181.imageshack.us/my.php?image=newwavemetacity2fz2.png

As a starting point I used Human Rounded Metacity.

The original ones were better. The version under this lines has lost the "k00l"
feeling the previous version had.

Who said the titlebars should be brown? I think that if we have the
proper orange accents here and there it would be much better than an
eye-strain orange line at the top of each window.

Brad's mockup is much more resolved than the above New Wave test, though
i liked Francois' original mockup just fine.

i'd like to see an implementation as-close-as-possible to what was in
Francois' original New Wave mockup (min/max/close titlebar icons
included!) and take it from there with adaptations where necessary
(ideally after testing it)..

what i am most worried about is the early dependence on Compiz.. do drop
shadows really matter? i know Cory disagrees here but shouldn't you
complete a theme without Compiz dependence and then work toward it as an
extra?

i teach with Ubuntu on a regular basis at university and in several
cultural centres: one of the first things i do is turn Compiz off as it
simply doesn't play nicely when one is programming 3D graphics
applications (a topic i often teach).

keep up the good work,

IMHO this way:

and http://bradwjensen.deviantart.com/art/Ubuntu-Theme-Mockup-Dark-67903127 .
It has a very professional look, while keeping the orange. Its more "solid"
than option B.

I think the theme is starting to look really good, but Firefox integration
really needs some work:
http://img3.freeimagehosting.net/uploads/e68b7655a7.png

As it is now, the menu bar is damn ugly, and pretty much useless. I realise
this isn't high priority, but it shouldn't be too hard to fix.

Sorry to disappoint you but I've been trough this type of gradients and
it is very confusing to use. So I made use of compiz Trailfocus plugin.

As for the line between toolbar and other content I tried that too and
it just doesn't feels right without it. I think we will be able to
implement better line (fading at its ends) when we start the work on the

Or that way:

That looks a bit strange, because it removes the feeling you can
actually "touch" the windows, that it is made of something real. Here it
just looks like squares coloured with gradient. Anton has a strong "3D
image" in mind of what a window is -- or was if it existed in the real
world --, and I have my own, but I really can't imagine how would those
windows look like in the real world. However that's only my personal
opinion!

[ubuntu-art] Windows decorator.

2008-05-07 Thread José Luis
Hi! I've just found "Jasper", a new WD being developed by the compiz
guys. Its here: http://forum.compiz-fusion.org/showthread.php?t=6324
BTW: Great job with the windows decorator in the New Wave theme. But the
widgets still need work. Now we have windows border+ archive, edit...
bar in one colour: black. And the windows in default grey. We need some
kind of transition between these or mtch the window top with the
background of all apps.

Hi gp,

Sorry for the explanation. Right now we are interested in new software
as metacity is slowly loosing ground (my opinion). If you know how to
make a metacity theme - you are welcomed to do it and show it to us (the
mailing list).

I've done it and it looks blurrier compared to other sans fonts.

I don't understand what you mean. Isn't it like the link above? In it
you can see the Liberation fonts in use for titlebars.

Don't know if the engine has access to such an information as
active/inactive windows. If it has it is possible. Anyone knows that?

About the understanding of my concept imagine that the menubar and
titlebar are background(bg) and the rest of the window is
foreground(fg). Thus the fg is dropping shadow on the bg and that is why
the gradient look like that.

Here's the test you requested:
http://img172.imagevenue.com/img.php?image=74539_NewWave_test_07_122_995lo.jpg

But this confg made me think that I can grab the window by the menubar
and move it. That certainly is not possible :D

I confirm that for me it's the best way to develop the future Ubuntu

Yes. My question was not this but if, or how to use Emerald.
But my question was if the same theme can be applied without Emerald.
I noted that the NewWave window decoration can be applied only with
Emerald because is not present the same decoration for Metacity.
Without the Emerald window decoration the theme is not exactly the same thing.
A good idea can be to make a Metacity theme similar to Emerald.

2008-05-07 Thread Étienne Bersac
Hi,

A quick note about engine limitation. Don't forget we'll have 2 years to
get this theme perfect, for the next LTS. Until that, you can get
compromise to get things for the other short term support releases. But
don't hesitate to push ideas upstream in engine, even if that's not
included yet for the next STS. :)

I actually would like to see a theme growing during two years long in
order to get a *very* professionnal theme for Ubuntu. If Ubuntu pushes
things upword to extends engines capabilities, this just mean that
Ubuntu is the leading distro, as it should be :)

Regards,
Étienne.

Ok, I did not see it this way, and I'm still not sure I can :-D
I see the window bar less flat, more rounded and over the rest of the

difference of view, I think we should ask others to be sure we make the

I'll be patient! In any case, I think you're doing a great job. Carry
on, I'm sure you could reach a real killer-theme.

Hi Oliver!

I don't really see what you mean, maybe you can mock it up. But if you
want the bar to be on the left, I see two problems:

1) If the names are written vertically it becomes really annoying to
read and not user friendly at all;
2) If you want the menu titles to be written horizontally on the left,
you lose a huge amount of place.

But maybe I have a wrong image in mind...

Cheers,

François

[ubuntu-art] New Wave and other things

2008-05-07 Thread Oliver Morgan
Hi,

I'm completely new to all of this - so please give me some leeway if I
say anything dumb!

I like new wave - it certainly is beginning to look like a complete
system. I just wondered that is looked very OSXy with Vista-type
transparencies. I just mean to say it isn't very groundbreaking. Maybe
this isn't the right place to ask this but with the proliferation of
the glassy look and transparencies I just wondered if we should think
about it all from the ground up a bit.

I mean I get that inactive windows gain some translucence but why?
Wouldn't it be better if we made alerts appear with a translucent
background - they are not working windows but notices - so making them
translucent makes them not interfere so much

Also I wondered about title bars. There is more real-estate left-to-
right than top-and-bottom. What if windows stacked that way and title
bars were at the left (maybe the top panel and bottom panels left and
right too). This would also make stacked menus expand in one
direction (if you see what I mean).

Are these sorts of changes possible - can I mock things like this up
or is it a waste of time?

Thanks!

Oliver

Very Nice.
I think that it's the right way to make the new theme for Intrepid.

If I want to try the theme, where can I download it?

But this theme is only for Compiz ?

I'm really not a fan of that theme at all, sorry but it just looks quite
dark, boring and tacky in my opinion. Of course, that's just my 2 cents
anyway. NewWave seems to be coming along nicely, but we mustn't forget the
human colours. The human orange/brown is what defines us, and makes us
original. If its one thing I want with 8.10 is to make sure we keep our
heritage, our Orange and Browns.

Hi Anton!

I tried your theme today. It is great! However, I have some suggestions.
In http://www/~fde/NewWave_suggestions.jpg , I modified the main things
I noticed; I don't know if it is technically possible to implement!

1) The gradient of the windows bar looks quite strange, because it is
applied only in the inferior half of the bar (the menubar), not on the
total width. Would it be possible to make it like on the image?

2) The font with a shadow in the bar looks very outdated. I suggest we
use a font without a shadow. The one you see in this image ("Totem Video
Player") is Free Sans, without any transformation.

3) I'm not sure about the transparency on the bar of the active window.
Maybe we should keep it solid.

4) The icons for closing, minimize, etc. are not bad, but I don't like
the one at the left (in Metacity, this one is the icon of the
application used. We should keep this). The ones at the right are nice
but we should -- maybe, not sure -- apply to them a light gradient, to
make them really "part" of the bar. You can also try other icons (I put
an example of a simple cross).

5) Could it be possible to make the down corners as round as the top
ones? Also, could you let me see how it looks without the thin dark gray
line of the bottom?

6) Still the thing about not active windows... Too bad we cannot make
the top bar/menu bar really flat, the whole window in the same piece.
Inactive windows of the current default theme of Ubuntu look a bit like
that.

7) Don't know if it is possible but it would be great if we could also
apply a really light gradient on the entire light gray window, like in
the initial mockup.

8) In the bar -- both windows bar and task bar (particularly the
taskbar, in fact) --, I'd like to see a light (not too light, though)
gray internal border. Here is what I mean:
http://www/~fde/NewWaveDetail.png
But that's really a detail, no? :-)

Ok, that's all for the moment!

I got an answer to my request in Compiz forum:
http://forum.compiz-fusion.org/showthread.php?p=56943#post56943

It seems they are working on a new window manager, but I fear it won't
be ready soon...

Cheers,

François

Thank you Mikkel. I think I'm going to use the clearlooks engine. Can
you tell me how to separate it from the gtk-engines package at
http://svn.gnome.org/viewvc/gtk-engines/
and how to make it new /.configure and proper make files. I haven't done
programming in Linux very much esp. with makefiles.

And here is the current progress with New Wave's gtkrc and
compiz-fusion :

Oh , see what I've found:

Looks like Metacity is going to dead-end.
