Re: [ubuntu-art] Droid Fonts

2008-07-06 Thread Jimmy Angelakos
Please allow me to speak frankly:

I don't really see what all the fuss is about with that Droid font.
Deja Vu Sans is a beautiful font, especially the Condensed version I
use as my UI font. It supports many languages and looks quite modern
without being very "blocky" as Troy calls it.

Droid has extreme usability problems on my machine here. It looks very
condensed at the UI Font selection window, even more so than
DejaVuSansCondensed. However when I select it, it appears as a very
plain-looking uncondensed font (even plainer than FreeSans). When I
fire up Firefox, I get the extremely condensed version again, at the
same time when it looks uncondensed on my desktop.

What happened to the discussion about D.V.S.C. being the default font
and why are we considering a font that *might* be open source one day?

Cheers,
Jimmy

I dont see the correlation. I think its pretty even... when you look

Just out of curiosity, why would newbies prefer bright themes and
experienced users prefer dark themes? I like the idea of including both a
dark theme and bright theme, but they should be targeted solely based on a
user's aesthetic preferences, not based on their ability/experience. I
think many "newbies" would prefer a darker theme and many experienced users
a brighter theme.

Mark was pretty insistent that we build off of the current ones. I
think that if you replace colors with more brown, but still some
orange, and with less gloss and more smooth gradients, we can retain
the look while updating it enough so it looks modern.

Can I suggest posting the etiquette primer into the list-serve email sign-up
sheet? I am just figuring this out now too, and it seems like a lot could be
avoided if people were forced to read about the rules in the process of signing
up. Alternately, there could be an automated first email for all new users
that laid out the rules. Otherwise this is going to be an endless back and
forth as new people sign up.

So are we keeping just the human folder icon and building off of that, or
keeping the orange/brown color scheme and building a new theme from that? If
the former, I think it would be hard to make new icons since the current
ones are so ingrained in ubuntu that they would only look like mods of the
current one. If the latter, then I think that the Discovery icons would be a
good base to go off of.

[ubuntu-art] Intrepid Ibex Art Wiki Pages

2008-07-06 Thread Salane Ashcraft
Hello Ubuntu Artists-

I spoke with Shuttleworth at the last Community Council meeting. I
discussed with him what to do with the current look of Ubuntu. He is
in favor of giving at as big of an update as we, the art team, can
provide. He wants new fonts, new icons, and a new theme. We need to be
more organized, so we came up with a plan.

He wants all of this to be completely community driven. He wasn't
really in favor of one persons idea for a theme or an icon set, but
would rather us work together, in a unified movement, to get things
done.

A wiki page in the Ubunt wiki will be created for each one of these
areas. the first one, regarding fonts, already has been created.

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Artwork/Incoming/Intrepid/Intrepid_Ibex_Font_-_Art_Team

Please find open source fonts, create a section for them, and post a
picture showing what they look like.

We will use this same model for icons and the theme.

With regards to icons, Shuttleworth wanted us to start with the folder
icon, and create a new look based off of the human theme. So yes, we
are staying with the orange/brown look.

You're still top-posting. When you click reply in Gmail, do *not* begin
typing your reply where the cursor rests by default. Scroll down and make
your reply *underneath* quoted text, and as an optional (but highly
recommended) step, delete unnecessary parts of the quoted text.

You have to understand that all messages send to this list are being
delivered to hundreds of people, and they have no control over the manner in
which these e-mails are presented to them. Only Gmail users can afford the
luxury of auto-threaded posts with redundant quoted text hidden by default.

*PLEASE* everyone stop top-posting. We've been over this time and time
and time and time again.

The license has been addressed already further back in this "font chat".
(though spread across a couple of threads) They are gonna be under a
license that will free them up to use at some point apparently.

Re: [ubuntu-art] New theme looking for critique based on Human-Clearlooks

2008-07-06 Thread AA Boy
Is this better as far as determining which window is unfocused and which is
focused? I modified the borders so that the gradient is darker going to
lighter when the windows are unfocused, and lighter going to darker when
they are focused. I will make a new package soon for this, making the Test2
window border the default one, so you only have 1 package. :)

Re: [ubuntu-art] Droid Fonts

2008-07-06 Thread AA Boy
According to a comment on this blog
post,
the droid fonts are, in fact, not free. So whether they look good or not is
beside the point, as they cannot be included due to licensing restrictions.

i far prefer the test2, though it's naturally harder to tell which window is
in focus. if unfocussed windows could be further differentiated from the
focussed it might we workable as a theme.

About this one...

I'd agree with the first point. :] However, your UI font won't appear as
large paragraphs all the time. As phrases, the font looks nice. IMO it's
better than what we have now.

The rest of the points aren't quite related to Droid Sans being the UI
font. Droid Serif shouldn't be our main *print* serif font since it's
meant for screen use, too. It's quite easier to read, though, if that
matters. (I think Liberation Serif would be nice for this...)

You mean like make it even more distinct (the text and buttons "blend in"
more with the title bar than the default) by darkening the border? I will
try that out and see how it works.
