Re: [ubuntu-art] Ubuntu Jersey's

2010-03-29 Thread Trey Ethridge
My plan was to order them, then ship them out to the various destinations.
The grouping I had in mind was in cases where several people from a LUG
wanted the jerseys. Then I could just ship one box for the group and they
could see that the jerseys get to the rightful owners.

At this point, I have less than 20 jerseys requested. It will be a little
work, but not too bad. There are several groups of 3 included in that
figure.

That's great. Looking forward to seeing how they will actually print. I think
a group order may be difficult, considering we all live in different parts of

2010-03-29 Thread Trey Ethridge
Anyone that wants a jersey can get one. I've sent an email to the Ubuntu
Cyclists group letting them know about the jerseys. There has been a lot of
interest so far.

I'm not trying to make a profit on the jerseys, so if you would like one I
can order you one and have it sent to you. You would just have to pay for
the jersey and shipping. If you can group requests together to make my job
easier, then that would be good. I think the jerseys are going to run about
$45 a piece (need to confirm).

I believe that I have good contacts at Canonical. I'm just giving them some
time. I know they are busy.

Re: [ubuntu-art] Ubuntu Jersey's

2010-03-25 Thread Trey Ethridge
I like that a lot. I should have mentioned this last night, but I forgot.
Could you remove the orange gradient on the back pockets so that the top
the back would have the same purple to orange gradient that the front has?
I'm curious to see how that would look.

I'll ping the Canonical folks again to see if I can get a response.

Re: [ubuntu-art] Ubuntu Jersey's

2010-03-24 Thread Trey Ethridge
I think we are really close to what I would like to use.

The one thing that I would like to update is the text on the back. I
believe that you have it centered and you are working to have the lynx
overlay the right side. I asked some friends that don't use Ubuntu what
they thought the text said and they couldn't tell me. Maybe we could move
the text to the left or use some other trick so that you can clearly make
out the text.

I'm pleased with all the other aspects of the jersey. I'd like to get some
of the Canonical folks to agree with the design if we could.

I like the white on the back better. It seems to pop out more. I know that
you removed the Lucid Lynx 10.04, but now it seems like something is needed
to balance the image on the back. Since we are already linking the jersey
to the 10.04 release with the lynx, does it matter if we have the text on
there? Maybe something else would be better to fill the void on the left
side, I don't know.

I was also trying to think of something cool to put on the collar. I was
thinking of something like, "humanity towards others". I don't know if that
is too cheesy to put on the collar though. Maybe you all can come up with
something.

Thorsten, the images of cyclists do show some wrinkles, but for the most
part the text is readable. I'm not sure if that is what you meant by your
email. I agree that you will have some wrinkles. :-)

I made the logo smaller on the sleeves. Maybe this will help with the
wrinkling, bend.

I borrowed the image of the lynx from a t-shirt that Canonical gave away at the
last UDS. I'd still like to find the original artist, so I can get permission
to use it. Kenneth, would/could you help out on this? (Apologies if this is
out of your realm.)

I put it on the front because I noticed the racing numbers go on the back.
However, the following links show it on the back, above where the number would
be placed. I made two versions, because for some reason, I don't like the
white lynx on the back. Anyone have a preference?

I just wanted to mention that since these are bike jerseys, typically they

I think the back would be a good choice too. Most of the time cyclists are

to have something on the front, but having the lynx on the back would look
good too.

Circle around the CoF on Right Side is too similar to the background or
vice versa. If I try to imagine how this will end up with a person in
it, I doubt the logo-type on the arms will work well (kinda cylindrical
surface, bend, wrinkled).

"10.04 Lucid Lynx" needlessly ties this to the release version (more so
than just the lynx as such). People not familiar with Ubuntu will have
no clue what that is about.

The CoF as eye would fit a robot, but appears to be problematic here
regarding style (rough splashy shape vs clean geometric shapes) and
perspective (side vs what rather suggests frontal).

This approach to the lynx could be great, strong, wild, fast, but you
should try to make the cat more recognizable.

Thinking of the composure of a racing cyclist, the back panel might
actually be the better canvas.

Thank you for working on this!

It's a good start! Some comments:

   - I think it would work better if the background was plain, not
 Ubuntu-polka-dotted
   - The lynx I'm not so sure about -- it's okay but a bit huge. Maybe
 a more stylized version?

I'm not up-to-date on the new guidelines, but I'll forward this to

I'll just comment on the logo guideline piece. From what I can see it's
using the plain Ubuntu logo and it's got the new form so it looks all

I have not heard of any off-list response yet.

Thanks for making me aware that they are not using the 3 color combination.
I'll rework it a bit. My last version is below, with a different lynx and a
little less Circle-of-Friends (which I will change):

Has there been a response off-list?

Coming late, but I'd wish you wouldn't use so many Circle-of-Friends.
Canonical might dislike that you use the old 3 color combination on the
log, instead of a single one, preferably white or orange, depending on
the background.

Hi Trey,

Here's the first draft. Please let me know what you think, and any other
comments from anyone else would be helpful.

Will you be sending it to Canonical for approval, or would like me to?

Thanks.

Hello Dea,

That's fine. If you want to just use the Lynx, then that's fine too. I
think Canonical would approve of you doing your best to match the
colors and designs if we don't get the official SVG images in time. We
are under a deadline. :-)

This is a chance for the community to show that we can roll with
the best jerseys that we often see for companies like Microsoft,
Red Hat, Cisco, and Nortel. I'm am hoping that we can use some
Ubuntu culture for the theme of the jersey. Ubuntu has a unique
mascot for each release. My thought was that we would design a
jersey that incorporated the mascots of our releases. The style of
the Hardy Heron wallpaper was pretty popular and would probably
look good on jerseys. Here is a link to the wall paper I'm
referring to: http://images.google.com/images?q=hardy+heron+wallpaper

The jersey could include the current supported releases or we could
try to incorporate them all. The jersey isn't limited to a
predefined set of colors, so we really have a lot of leeway in our
design.

Here is the list of mascots so you don't have to look them up:

Lucid Lynx
Karmic Koala
Jaunty Jackalope
Intrepid Ibex
Hardy Heron
Dapper Drake

Gutsy Gibbon
Feisty Fawn
Edgy Eft
Breezy Badger
Hoary Hedgehog
Warty Warthog

I realize that there is a wiki page for Ubuntu Jerseys, but I feel
that we want to push the boundaries more than these designs. The
jerseys appear to be limited by the number of colors that they can
contain due to manufacturing limits. Plus, they appear to just
reuse a lot of logos and I'm hoping for something new and exciting.

Here is a link to some designs that another cycling team in the
Multiple Sclerosis ride received when they placed a bid on the crowdspring.com
 design site. http://www.crowdspring.com/project/1283223_cycling-jersey-logo-vin/

Check out the Ubuntu jerseys here: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UbuntuCyclists

I've picked out a company to print our jerseys. They require that
the design be in the SVG format. Here is a link to the templates
that they recommend using when designing.

Jersey template:
http://champ-sys.com/media/SS%20Raglan%20Without%20Side%20Panel.pdf

Shorts template:
http://champ-sys.com/media/FullWrap%20U%20Panel%20MBI040.pdf

They have some notes about the black areas of the templates. The
black area can be one of seven pre-dyed colors. I recommend
checking out the notes on the page.

http://champ-sys.com/custom/cycling/formsandtemplates

The Diabetes ride is in June and the Multiple Sclerosis ride is in
September. The manufacturing process takes 6 to 8 weeks, so we
have some time to design.

I look forward to hearing from the group. This is an exciting
opportunity for your artwork to be seen by thousands of
participants in these events. Please let me know if you have
questions or need additional information.

Sincerely,
Trey Ethridge

Well, I stated "Interested yes, but not entirely sure, yet". Still busy
with the Ubuntu Manual title page and related artwork. While It was my
intention to tackle the Jerseys afterwards, I will be glad if Déa takes
care of this.

I would like to suggest to use "teamwork" and "speed" as central
motives. Bonus points if that can be combined with the idea of "light",
to get in line with the new Ubuntu identity design.

Note that there's still no SVG (or other vector format) of the new
Ubuntu logo available to the public.

Re: [ubuntu-art] Ubuntu Jersey's

2010-03-10 Thread Trey Ethridge
Hello Déa,

Yes. I still need help. Thorsten Wilms stated that he would help too,
however I haven't received any mockups yet. I believe that he is working on
something now. I'm sure he wouldn't mind if you also helped out. The way I
see it is the more ideas the better.

We established that we need to have the design by the April 11th in order
for us to get the jerseys printed in time for the June ride. If we could
have it completed by the end of March that would be even better.

Let me know if you have any questions. I'm open to all ideas/designs.

Re: [ubuntu-art] Ubuntu Jersey's

2010-03-05 Thread Trey Ethridge
I can follow up with them to see if they will accept standard SVG files.
The first ride is June 5th. They require 6 to 8 weeks to deliver. Eight
weeks from June 5th is around the 11th of April.

I would like to have the design done by the beginning of April if I had to
set a reasonably comfortable deadline. The more time we have the better.
I'll still need to sell enough of the jersey's to do the minimum order.
I'm sure a lot of people would want to see the jersey before they agree to
buy one.

Illustrator has its own .ai format. Inkscape should be able to save
to .ai, but my build of it refuses to do so, currently. Need to solve
that.

Interested yes, but not entirely sure, yet. This will have to wait until
the new colors are pinned down and a vector file of the new logo is
available, anyway.

Guess I will have to do it because not helping you in this cause would
be sad and there is nobody else on this list capable of getting it
right ;p (would love to be proven wrong).

Can you set a deadline, going from the first race backwards, getting
jerseys delivered/sold, 6 weeks production (or what it was) plus a
buffer for whatever might go wrong?

I'm not trying to be deceptive. I have no money for this project. If I
can't get some help from the community, then I'm going to need to try and
get Canonical to contribute or factor the design of the jerseys into the
price, which are already pretty expensive. I'm doing this for charity. I'm
hoping that somebody in the community will contribute to help spread the
Ubuntu message. :-)

I'm cool with having the jersey linked to a release. It's an LTS, so it
will be valid for several years. By the time it is no longer supported, I'm
hoping that we would have new jerseys. Plus, it's a lynx!

I'm also fine with abstract designs. I'm open to all ideas. I just gave
the example of the mascots as an idea. I would just like more than the
Ubuntu jerseys on the wiki page I reference.

I agree. I would prefer to not have their logo on there, but they have the
best rates for small batches. It is pretty hard to get people to shell out
$100 for jerseys. The less I have to sell the better. If we have more
demand, we can print them.

Thanks for the feed back. Are you interested?

You mentioning the possibility to hire someone makes me less willing to
do it for free.

It's a good thing nobody has been on this, because we only now know of
the new logo and look for Ubuntu. The definite colors are not even
defined/public, there's no vector file of the outlines available.

Adding all the mascots would lead to a clusterfuck.

The lynx as a cat could be nice, sporty and all. But would you really
want to tie the jerseys to a specific release? You should open your mind
to simple and abstract designs, it needs to work even though *woosh* ...
there goes the cyclist.

Strange. I read Illustrator or Corel Draw format.

Hello all,

I haven't received a response from anyone that would like to help out with
this project. I feel that this is a great opportunity for someone that is
looking to expand their portfolio. These are cycling jersey's that have the
approval of the marketing team at Canonical. There are several Canonical
employees that plan to purchase these jersey's.

If I don't get any help from the community, I'm going to have to raise money
and hire a professional artist. If you have an interest in this project,
please let me know.

Thank you,
