Yea - Hi everyone!

Nice work, nice to see someone using Blubuntu, too!

Two things to say:
1. I didn't package the work - I think it was Daniel Holbach who did
the packaging. I would suggest we create a package
'Blubuntu-GDM-Facebrowser' or put it in the same package. I've CCd
Daniel because I don't know if he still reads the artwork list.

2. When I did the Blubuntu designs I included some GDM mock-ups with a
face-browser. In some ways, I think when adding a face-browser using a
different page layout looks better - see
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Artwork/Incoming/Blubuntu/BlubuntuGdmTheme for
my ideas.

If you want to use any of them then I have the SVGs kicking around
somewhere. Get in touch if you want to GDMarise them and I'll dig them
out.

Anyone else still using Blubuntu? How do you find it? Shall we run an
update sometime soon?

Patch to fix network-manager bug

2007-09-05 Thread Brandt, Todd E
This is a patch to the lsb-base package. It's the cause of the error in
the network-manager installation with moblin-image-creator.

Basically when you install the ubuntu mobile fset, it tries to install
the ubuntu-mobile meta package which points to network-manager and
network-manager-gnome. When network-manager is installed it runs a post
install script that restarts the NetworkManager service. This script
calls the log_daemon_msg function to print out a little message to the
effect of restarting network manager service... . Log_daemon_msg is a
function defined in /etc/lsb-base-logging.sh and it attempts to display
the message in a fancy way on the terminal screen. To do this it gathers
info on how many columns there are by calling tput cols, which it just
assumes returns a valid number. This is the bug. For some reason, tput
cols returns -1 when it's called from apt-get from within a
moblin-image-creator target root. This ends up getting processed and
given back to tput as an argument later on and the - causes tput to
barf because it thinks the number is an option that doesn't exist.

This patch adds a check to ensure that the column value is usable. The
script already defaults to 80 columns if tput cols returns nothing, so
I just expanded that case to include returns of 6 columns or less.

Re: support for python home plugin yet?

2007-09-05 Thread Kyle Nitzsche

Thanks for your comments Rodrigo!

No, my description in the wiki page
(https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UMEGuide/ApplicationDevelopment/AnatomyOfUMEPythonApplication)
of where to put an application's files does not represent a new
standard/requirement for UME. The wiki page describes the way I got it
to work. When you do it this way, the app displays in the UME
Applications Extras menu. (It would be great if a UME person could
also take a look at the wiki page and comment on my approach.)

One slight correction to what your email said:
"
in your tutorial you install everything into /usr/share/app name, so
is this a new standard for ume and one we should adapt to?

"
Actually, the wiki says to put the python file there but to put the
.desktop file in /usr/share/applications, which I found (by trial and
error) works as described above.

The link you gave
(http://maemo.org/community/wiki/HildonDesktopPluginHowto) is good
stuff, and obviously getting a Python IDE going is great! However, I'm
not sure whether it applies directly to what I want to accomplish.

--I'd like to write a home plugin in Python that displays by default
in the home area at startup.
--I'd like to know exactly what the .desktop file should look like (the
example in the link you provided shows a desktop file for a C plugin)
--And, I'd like to know exactly where the files should go (the python
file and the .desktop file) in UME
--Mostly, I want to be able to explain precisely what a developer needs
to know to get this done, so any help with these details will be
greatly appreciated!

I've tried putting the python file in /usr/lib/hildon-desktop and
putting the .desktop file in /usr/share/applications/hildon-home, but
that doesn't seem to work. Perhaps my .desktop file is wrong. I've
tried using Type=default, Type=python and various permutations of
X-Path and Exec (with a shell command to call python and pas it the.py
file) to no avail.

Cheers,
Kyle

The following link describes where put the files
http://maemo.org/community/wiki/HildonDesktopPluginHowto

You can get the python-hildondesktop package and the pyphantom python
plugin IDE at http://pyphantom.garage.maemo.org/
currently this is just a plugin ide, but we would like to be used as
an IDE for python application development.

I have some questions about
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UMEGuide/ApplicationDevelopment/AnatomyOfUMEPythonApplication

in pyphantom we install into different locations, for example we
install python files into
/usr/lib/hildon-desktop/ and .desktop files into
/usr/share/applications/plugin-type

in your tutorial you install everything into /usr/share/app name, so
is this a new standard for ume and one we should adapt to?

Enclosed is a patch to network-manager which fixes this. I am not

and it works. Maybe Alexander Sack can apply the patch.

A workaround exists for now. Install the core package. Then manually
install the network-manager package using apt-get. apt-get install
network-manager. You can do this by starting a terminal in the target.

Once you have done that, then install the Fset that you wanted to
install.

[ubuntu-in] Ubuntu Repository DVDs

2007-09-05 Thread Gavri Fernandez
Hi,

I'm new to the list and have not used Ubuntu yet. While it's always
been easy getting the whole Debian repository on DVD, nobody seems to
be selling Ubuntu's.

I'm in Chennai. What's the easiest way to get everything (all four
components) on DVD?

I believe that something like dans guardian is probably going to be

I would prefer not to use scripts, and it seems that apps are in repos

 Hi Alan,

I'm running dansguardian content filtering at the moment on a network
serving 400 and odd machines. I'm happy to help you out if you get
 stuck.

Actually just chucking it in and getting it going isn't too hard to be
honest. Just grab danguardian and squid and configure using the
 supplied configuration files.

 Open /etc/dansguardian/dansguardian.conf

Find the line that says UNCONFIGURED
Comment it out by appending a # to the beginning of the line.

If memory serves me correctly, squid arrives ready to go, but the
config file is over at /etc/squid/squid.conf

Squid should be listening on port 3128 and dansguardian on 8080 -
point your browser at yourproxy:3128 for unfiltered and yourproxy:8080
 for filtered internet access.

Other things you might want to look at are

 a) configuring the actual content filtering level
 b) stopping squid from creating a log file (it doesn't need to,
 because dansguardian does)
 c) setting squid up to cache commonly accessed content to reduce bandwidth.

Other stuff might come to me later. If you have any particular
questions, I'll have a gander at the installation at work

Thanks Chris (and Rob).
I am beginning to get the idea I think. Am I correct in believing that
the Filtering Machine is just 'somewhere' on the LAN as usual, and
that the users machines are then configured to point to it, so LAN
cabling is not affected?

Also, is the arrangement fragile in some way - say, in that if for
some reason the filtering machine is not running first, then things
get really screwed up? Or does it all later settle down automatically
when the filtering machine is later turned on?

to add to the stuff thats already been said, I used DansGuardian as a
transparent proxy, its very easy and just needs 1 iptables rule:

/sbin/iptables -t nat -A PREROUTING -i eth0 -p tcp --dport 80 -j
REDIRECT --to-port 8080

then set iptables to block 3128 for squid and no-one will know they are
being content filtered and proxied until it tells them they can't access
a certain page.

This also means you don't have to go around setting everyones proxy
manually, but this only works if you have squid/dansguardian running on
the default gateway for the network. (and dont forget to add transparent
into squid.conf so the line is like this:
http_port 3128 transparent
)

[ubuntu-uk] Desktop problems

2007-09-05 Thread Keith Bowerman
I was surprised not to receive a reply from my previous posting on this
subject. I accept that there is a lot of other traffic at present and
also my description of my problem was rather long winded.

To precis the situation - when Ubuntu boots up and I log-in, the Ubuntu
banner is blank, i.e. there is no Nautilus sign and the three icons at
the bottom left of the banner are missing. I receive only a plain
orangey/brown screen and nothing else happens.

However, if I boot up, then before logging in, I select options at the
bottom left of the screen and choose Failsafe Gnome, then log-in I enter
my normal configuration. Nevertheless, the next time I boot up the
problem remains the same. The only thing I could think of was to save

Has anyone any ideas?

Are you using lm-sensors to get this info when logged in? You may want
to look at the man page for the sensors command and also its config
file /etc/sensors.conf. There is a whole host of stuff in there to do
with how it converts the values from the M/B sensors to real numbers.

28-31 seems low to me. Mine runs at about 44 or there abouts, but I
guess it depends on the CPU model.

[ubuntu-uk] Co-Location - Can you beat this quote?

2007-09-05 Thread Matthew Macdonald-Wallace
Hi all,

I'm looking to co-locate a few 1U servers, best offer I've had so far is:

£58 pcm for:

2 x 1U Servers
3TB Bandwidth per server
0.5a per server
10MB burstable link per server
KVM-over-IP for incidents when the box is refusing connections
build-room on site for customers if needed
Private datacentre in Maidenhead opposite (and with links to) BlueSquare
All the usual redundancies that you'd expect with regard to power etc
24x7 on-site support
Free reboots

It seems like a pretty good deal to me (it's from www.49pence.com/ )
but I'm open to offers that will beat it on price as I know that
there's a few people who host on this list!

Cheers,

M.

I would add that if the 60C is accurate then that is also rather high - what
kind of cooling do you have in the case - fan sizes, positions etc? Are they in
a push-pull configuration??

Generally the most accurate way of measuring CPU temps is with thermal
pads. The next most accurate way is the BIOS. that will report back
direct from the thermal sensor underneath the CPU. A desklet in the OS
may not be reading the correct sensor.

I can't think why Windows would be a fair bit cooler than the BIOS apart
from if the BIOS doesn't throttle the CPU and runs it full speed where a
CPU driver in Windows does.

Quick test - if you can touch the heatsink and leave your finger on
there for more than 5 seconds when the BIOS is saying 60degC then the
BIOS is incorrect.

nothing like hands-on testing is there :)

I would agree that I would trust to the BIOS rather than anything else - it
may be that in windows the cpu is being throttled correctly, whereas under
Ubuntu it's ignoring the BIOS settings and running at full-tilt all the
time, which is going to make a significant difference in temps, particularly
as when not under load in windoze my cpu speed throttles back to around
50%. I'm pretty sure there's a cpu-scaling widget you can stick on your
deskbar that will show whether it's lowering the speed or not...

You could run the sensors command from a terminal window. That will show
the output from all known sensors. It maybe you are picking up the M/B
temp instead of the cpu temp. Just a thought.

/etc/sensors.conf has a lot of information about how these things are
computed.

Does this happen when you run any program in Crossover?

As a workaround, we might be able to remove a few words in
the /etc/X11/xorg.conf file so that it is unable to use any resolution
higher than your normal resolution. This isn't ideal though, and it
would be better to get to the root of the problem.

There isn't anything you can install on any OS thats accurate. About the

Quick way to see if the problem is in the .gnome2 directory: move it.
Rename it to something else and try logging in. This will revert
anything you've changed in this dir to their defaults and if it clears
the problem then you can put the contents back bit by bit to identify
what was actually causing the problem.

If that doesn't help try moving some of the other ~/.* things
elsewhere. A quick look gives .nautilus .metacity .gnome
.gnome2_private .cups .gtkrc* .gconf and possibly more.

It's possible. On my notebook, Ubuntu sometimes 'forgets' that the fan is
running at full speed, so the CPU gets pretty cool when idle. I
usually run glxgears or a simple primenumber-calculator to get the
CPU-temperature above 50°C. Then, when the CPU goes back to idle and the
temperature drops, the fan gets shut down properly.

[ubuntu-uk] Kubuntu on Live CD

2007-09-05 Thread Ian Pascoe
Hi Folks

At the LUG meeting I went to last night, one of the guys was trying to
install kubuntu onto his new laptop - an Advanta (?) that currently has
vista on it. He wanted to make it a dual boot machine, so far so good.

However, when the Live CD booted up, the maximum screen size it would allow
was 1024 x 768 although the laptop is a 1260 jobiie. After lots of playing
around with various configs in various parts of the system we gave up trying
to get the correct screen resolution, putting it down to the fact that the
chip set could not be fully supported so we installed it.

And after installing and re-booting it detected the screen resolution
properly and away it went - weird!

So just for the hell of it, we re-booted with the Live CD again and got back
to the original results. The laptop was NOT connected to the Internet at
any time during this install.

My question is is this a bug, and is this worth reporting? It was Kubuntu
7.04.

Cheers

E

Id be happy if it was ubuntu that was right :)
This issue here is twofold...
1) The bios firmware basically just loops and effectively thrashes the
processor hence the 60'C readings.
2) The OS will throw in HALT instructions when it's idle that basically
put the processor to sleep for a split second, it uses almost no power
and the CPU cools nicely.

The OS reading is the more correct, but be aware that 60'C is bit over
the recommended 50'C max temperature. If you do something CPU intense,
like re-encode video the temp. will rise to 60'C and if your harddrive
is nearby it will get cooked...

My laptop idles (right now) at 37° and when I'm encoding video it

Team Report!

2007-09-05 Thread Daniel Holbach
Hey everybody,

in the past we've tried a couple of times to let the world know how much
awesome work we do in the Desktop team. The UDN, bits we contributed to
UWN and so on.

Jono had the idea of using wiki pages for team reports and collating
them once in a month. Our team page is at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DesktopTeam/ReportingPage

We need to do this as a joint effort, so if you could please add a small
sentence to the page, every time you

  * fix an important bug,
  * implement a cool new feature,
  * get a new cool package included in Ubuntu,
  * etc

please let our users know and update that page.

To make it into reports, your items should be on it by the 22nd of every
month.

Show the world how much good work we do in the team and help keeping the
page up to date.

Thanks a lot!

Have a nice day,
 Daniel

1- clicar em marcar todas as atualizações;
2 - Clicar em arquivo/Gerar scritp de download;
3 - Salvar o arquivo =}

estamos avaliando outras possibilidades.

Fico grato pelo auxilio,

Best Regards,
Marcelo Magno

Re: [Ubuntu-BR] Ubuntu no Macbook

http://www.kernelthread.com/mac/osx/
http://www.kernelthread.com/mac/osx/arch_xnu.html

O segundo link mostra a arquitetura do XNU, o kernel do Mac OS.

bem algumas coisas.
A certeza

 etc..
