[ubuntu-in] Holding ubuntu workshops at VJTI

2007-09-15 Thread mehul
Next week we will be having an introductory seminar on Linux, at VJTI.
It would be great to have a workshops on ubuntu right after that as
students would be just introduced to linux and they would have access
to 30 PC's with Ubuntu installed on them.
When would it be feasible for the team to hold the workshops? Also, it
would be great if list members can come up with the list of topics to
be covered and ideas on what other activities can be held.

[ubuntu-uk] Kubuntu vs Ubuntu for new users

2007-09-15 Thread Chris Rowson
I promise, I'm not trolling!

I've been moving users across from Windows to Linux for a while now,
with - on the large - reasonable success. Because I use Gnome, and
don't have much experience of using KDE, I've just always installed
Ubuntu by default and not really given Kubuntu the time of day.

Lately, I've demonstrated Ubuntu to some real computer novices who've
commented why is the start button at the top, and why are there two
bars at the top and bottom of the screen, who have then shaken their
heads in disapproval at this deviation from the Windows norm!

Kubuntu, I notice is much more similar to the interface they know and
love, so it'd make sense that it'd be the best choice for migrating
users from Windows. Is this true? Should I try using Kubuntu as novice
users first Linux distro?

Comments?

[ubuntu-uk] Linux may void the warranty

2007-09-15 Thread Dougie Richardson
Yep, it's a strange one. People install all sorts of software on their
Windows machines and yet I bet this wouldn't void the warranty. I'd be
interested to read the *actual* warranty that came with the machine.
Cracked screen hinge or not, I guess if it's in the warranty then it's

 Philip/.

For anyoone in this position, a check with the trading standards reveals that
while it is legal to put anything you like in a warranty, it doesn't mean it's
legal to uphold.

In this case, the fact is that PCW have a policy that requires Windows to be
the only OS installed. The goods have a material defect not one which cannot be
attributed to installed software.

I've been following this quite closely and I have to say that I'm inclined to
believe it's FUD. When it was posted on Slashdot one tof the replies was from a
Curry's (part of the same group as PC World) area manager who asked the poster
to contact him directly. I can't help but wonder if this is in fact more to do
with how the case was cracked rather than the software installed.

It's unavoidable when you mention KDE and GNOME in the same email :)

Happens to me too :)

I tried this with my Dad, also after thinking Kubuntu would better suit a
Windows user. A week later I was installing Ubuntu, with GNOME, over the
top. Some of KDE's quirks got on his nerves a bit. He has been happy with
GNOME (despite being a Windows user (*developer*) for most of his life, and
reluctant to learn anything else).

Comments?

Also on the family PC I installed Xubuntu, which, when the menu is moved to
the lower left, and renamed Start, most barely noticed any change (already
used to FF and OpenOffice). GNOME does not allow you to set any text for the
single-icon main menu. Xfce is simple, clean, and quite fast. The only
problem is (well, when I last used it, Edgy) it lacks all the supporting
apps that Ubuntu/GNOME has. For example until Edgy, it was required to
install GNOME's printer manager to add a printer using a GUI. Still, it is
definitely worth a look so you can see for yourself.

Matthew.

PS. I have been laughed at for being both a developer and a GNOME user. To
each his own! :)

This is what we are up against people! Large Companies actively trying

I would strongly recommend anyone think twice about buying from PC World.
Any company who thinks that software could have caused that kind of

So far I'm finding KDE seems to be a bit more responsive and erm...
sharper than gnome, but it doesn't seem to be as solid. I've found
myself experiencing more application crashes in kde although as I'm
using the tribe 5 release of 7.10 it could be because of that.

There seem to be more options for configuration in KDE, but I'm not so
sure that new users would use them, and that they may get a bit tied
up in them. Gnome layout seems a bit more sane, and I imagine it makes
more sense to a new user.

The voyage of discovery continues!

[Ubuntu-be] Ubuntu à vélo ? opération « Friday Bikeday »

2007-09-15 Thread Y P
Hello all,

Maybe this concerns Brussels, but I'd like to explain my idea anyway,
feel FREE to transpose ! ! !

Brussels has recently started the action/operation Friday Bikeday;

my idea/question is: what about participating with the goal of
increasing the promotion/visualization of the Ubuntu community ?

My slogan is: Friday Ubuntu Bikers Day !

Any citizen, administration, enterprise may participate.
Why not Ubunteros ?
Aren't there any Ubuntu bikers in this city ? I presume yes there are.

How To ? well, simply by participating but + getting Ubuntu T-shirts,
Sweeters, etc who can be watched more and more in the city at friday ? :-)

As you understand, this is only a visualization operation, not a
commercial nor political one. But you do probably know how does advertising
works: visualizing a topic = to exist, and existing can grow up to
knowledge, and knowledge to adheration.

This was the French text I've got from a friend:

snip FR

/snip FR

apparently tom-tom might get open source
 towards the cartographers.
it would benefit them, and the users.

If you're talking about the OpenTom.org project, this is totally independent
of TomTom himself since they are not giving any information about their
protocols and products, except that they work under Gnu/Linux, but the
soft on board is TomTom's non open software.

Personally, we bought a Garmin Streetpilot c510 gps, and this week we
already discovered that some street numbers in Gent had changed (new
building), and now we absolutely ignore how we could update it from our
Ubuntu PC: btw this will not be so easy since Garmin.be / Fromar.be
(importer) themselve advised us to use Garmin maps, and it seems we are
the first users of Linux here while the update softs online are all for
Windows.

So how should we update on a safe way without damaging something (it is
btw new under warranty)?
I have no confidence in all these alternate maps and so since we are lambda
users, not spcialized in open source maps for gps.

Y P

PS: we exactly choosed for Garmin due to the informations above concerning
Tomtom. I wrote exactly the opposite info posted by someone who believed
that Tomtom was a good choice since it runs under Gnu/Linux.
I'm afraid there aren't still good choices as long as the manufacture
himself doesn't provide update bins or so for Gnu/Linux.

A propos des machines virtuelles ???

2007-09-15 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Bonsoir,

[Bug 139741] [gutsy] network connection manager dissapears, wireless disabled

2007-09-15 Thread GabrielGrant
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: network-manager

Waking the computer after sleeping, the network manager icon in the
system tray has disappeared, and the computer will not automatically
connect to any networks. Opening System - Administration - Network to
get the Network Settings panel says the wireless network connection is
not configured.

Plugging in a network cable after network manager disappears still works
as expected: an IP address is obtained via DHCP.

Running ps -A does, show NetworkManagerD.

After restarting network manager always reappears, however a Ctrl-Alt-
Bkspc does not fix the problem.

This occurred on an IBM Thinkpad X31.

Open question: I know that there have been some problems with power
management on Thinkpads, some of which were addressed in an update
yesterday. Could this be related to that?

[Bug 134830] Re: GL Desktop (gnome-compiz-preferences) crashes

I think it's justified to change status to Confirmed.

I think I found the crash and got it fixed. If you can confirm this
fixes it for you, I'll get it uploaded to the main archive. Thanks for

[Bug 139741] Re: [gutsy] network connection manager dissapears, wireless disabled

2007-09-15 Thread GabrielGrant
** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: network-manager

Waking the computer after sleeping, the network manager icon in the
system tray has disappeared, and the computer will not automatically
connect to any networks. Opening System - Administration - Network to
get the Network Settings panel says the wireless network connection is
  not configured.

Plugging in a network cable after network manager disappears still works
as expected: an IP address is obtained via DHCP.

- Running ps -A does, show NetworkManagerD.
+ Running ps -A does, show nm-applet and NetworkManagerD.

2007-09-15 Thread Mlt
As this bug seems to be considered unimportant can I explain further?

I realise that there is the general black window problem because of
Nvidia,, etc. However, this has recently got worse. For example, I was
able to watch tv from my myth backend, have a number of windows open and
everything was fine,

Know, I cannot have my Konqueror maximised because I four tabs open in

There is something going on with the memory use that happened at about

[Bug 137911] Re: qla1280 module missing

2007-09-15 Thread Paulo Tanimoto
I believe this bug is of utmost importance, because it prevents us from
installing any recent Ubuntu release. I've tried Gutsy, Feisty, but
could only get the installer to recognize the scsi drives with Dapper
(6.06). Dist-upgrading does not work. I'm about to try to compile the
module from the source, as suggested by Jan.

Also, the bug is more general than just qla1280. In my case it involves
qla2200.

Please let me know what information I can provide. I hope we can fix
this before releasing Gutsy.

There is also a link to the quirks site:

Suspend to Disk with Fn+F12, however, does nothing. In gconf /apps

./general/can_hibernate is true.

[Bug 104038] Re: Upgrade to feisty causes loss of TTYs due to incorrect file mangling

2007-09-15 Thread Onno Benschop
Let me start with that I'm no expert on the installation system, but
here's what I've learnt so far:

$dpkg -S tty1
system-services: /etc/event.d/tty1

$dpkg -L system-services
[..]
/usr/lib/upstart/migrate-inittab.pl
[..]

$cat /var/lib/dpkg/info/system-services.postinst
{confirms that /usr/lib/upstart/migrate-inittab.pl does the work}

That means to my mind that the error is very likely happening within
migrate-inittab.pl

(Of course it may well be that this was obvious to all involved.)

I'll do some Perl RTFM-ing and see what I learn.

[Bug 139744] irda-utils: setserial not found

[Bug 49827] Re: Available resolutions incompletely set to 1024x768, 800x600, 640x480

2007-09-15 Thread rickmans
I used to had the same problem however I upgraded to 7.10 (tribe 5 via a
dist-upgrade) and re-ran the configure of X. Also I switched to xubuntu,
since then the proper resolution is available ([EMAIL PROTECTED]) and usable.
However I do not know if this is due to the upgrade to 7.10 or my switch
to xubuntu I will try to figure that out. Videocard is an onboard
videocard.

[Bug 110829] Re: Minor error in README example

2007-09-15 Thread Niklas Klein
Ok i have added your suggestion to the changelog. I had to learn who the
changelog has to look like, by trying and getting responses, how to do
better. I can't find the complete useful information in the wiki at
ubuntu.com.

What i have learned no is:
* Changelog entry lines are limited to 80 characters
* I a bug is closed, refer to it with: (LP: #x). at the end of the line
* Mention the files which are changed (This is one thing hard to find out,
because i can't find it in the wiki and i haven't seen it in most of the
changelog files i read).
* Mention the right release

I used https://wiki.ubuntu.com/MOTU/Recipes/Debdiff to start with trying
to help with bugs, perhaps i is a good idea to add an recipe for
updating the changelog and refer from
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/MOTU/Recipes/Debdiff to this recipe?

If the points i have mention above are right (Mathias?), i am willing
to write a recipe page in the wiki. If i am missing some points, please
let me know.

[Bug 89314] Re: serial consoles not properly migrated from inittab to event.d

2007-09-15 Thread Onno Benschop
Based what I learnt and documented in bug #104038, I suspect that this
is the problem line:

File: /usr/lib/upstart/migrate-inittab.pl (which I've attached so we can
all look at the same file - mine comes from Feisty)

Likely faulty line 94:
$job[$idx] =~ s/^(\s*respawn\s+).*/$1$process/;

I'm only able to deduce this (not being a native Perl speaker) based on the
following argument:

Line 56 starts a foreach, which contains an if-then-else on line 60.

If the code was going through the else on line 100, the faulty tty lines
would contain the phrase stop on shutdown, which the examples
available to me do not have.

That means the code is going through the top half of the if-then-else.
(Which started on line 60).

The code comes to the if-then-else on line 93.

If it were to take the else on line 95, then there would be no issue
because the 'exec' would be at the start of the line - which it isn't.

That means it is going through line 94 which I'm postulating contains
some black magic Perl, which I do no yet understand - yay Perl Regex -
:(

[Bug 139747] Azureus 2.5.0.4 hangs on Gutsy when adding torrents

2007-09-15 Thread MrAuer
Public bug reported:

Ive been running two test systems for Gutsy, both are clean installs
from alpha 4 and not upgrades. Running latest up to date packages as of
today.

Running Azureus 2.5.0.4 from the tarballed binary they distribute, on both my
systems (both Pentium 4 machines).
Azureus will crash every time I try to open torrent files, whether thru the
dialogue box Open torrent... or by drag-and-dropping files on Azureus.
Otherwise Azureus works, it seeds or downloads torrents that were already open.
I think this behaviour started sometime after Gutsy alpha 4, but cannot confirm
the exact time. Used to work well on both machines.

Bug is reproducable and happens every time on performing file adds. Have
tried removing Azureus folders, both the .azureus and actual azureus
ones, for trying a clean Azureus setup - no help.

I can post the Azureus logs if needed, I dont see anything weird there but then
im not a programmer :)
I thought Id file this as a separate bug, since this differs imho from the
other filed Azureus/Java bugs.

[Bug 139748] poor handling of eSATA drives

2007-09-15 Thread Damon Lynch
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-volume-manager

Using both Gutsy and Feisty, When an eSATA drive is connected to the
system, in my case via an expresscard adapter, it is not handled in the
same manner as a Firewire or USB drive.

Scenario 1: where drive is connected before the machine is powered on

1. It is not mounted automatically. The user must go to the Computer
and click on the drive in order to mount it. This is inconsistent
behavior compared to Firewire or USB drives.

2. If the drive is FAT32, the user is asked to enter a password for
security reasons. If the drive is ext3, no password is required (I have
not tested an eSATA ext3 drive with Gutsy since I do not have one
available, but I did observe this with Feisty).

All connected eSATA drives should be mounted automatically at boot time.

Scenario 2 relates to plugging / unplugging a drive when the machine is
already booted. I think that should be a separate bug report.

[Bug 138933] Re: [Gusty] Broken Nvidia driver after upgrade to Gusty (7.10)

2007-09-15 Thread Sitsofe Wheeler
jdm64:
Since bugs can only be about one single issue which one do you want this bug to
be about? The hidden dotfile issue is Bug #106217.

When you are using XGL direct rendering will not be available (which
pretty much makes sense given the way that XGL works). Just because you
direct rendering is off doesn't mean your GL won't be accelerated though
(it often means this but the XGL case is different). It is not clear
exactly what GL problems you were having under XGL from your comment so
you will have elaborate a bit more if you feel the bug is about that
issue.
