[ubuntu-in] Holding ubuntu workshops at VJTI
Next week we will be having an introductory seminar on Linux, at VJTI. It would be great to have a workshops on ubuntu right after that as students would be just introduced to linux and they would have access to 30 PC's with Ubuntu installed on them. When would it be feasible for the team to hold the workshops? Also, it would be great if list members can come up with the list of topics to be covered and ideas on what other activities can be held. -- ubuntu-in mailing list ubuntu-in@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-in

[ubuntu-uk] Kubuntu vs Ubuntu for new users
I promise, I'm not trolling! I've been moving users across from Windows to Linux for a while now, with - on the large - reasonable success. Because I use Gnome, and don't have much experience of using KDE, I've just always installed Ubuntu by default and not really given Kubuntu the time of day. Lately, I've demonstrated Ubuntu to some real computer novices who've commented why is the start button at the top, and why are there two bars at the top and bottom of the screen, who have then shaken their heads in disapproval at this deviation from the Windows norm! Kubuntu, I notice is much more similar to the interface they know and love, so it'd make sense that it'd be the best choice for migrating users from Windows. Is this true? Should I try using Kubuntu as novice users first Linux distro? Comments? Chris. -- ubuntu-uk@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-uk https://wiki.kubuntu.org/UKTeam/
[ubuntu-uk] Linux may void the warranty
Yep, it's a strange one. People install all sorts of software on their Windows machines and yet I bet this wouldn't void the warranty. I'd be interested to read the *actual* warranty that came with the machine. Cracked screen hinge or not, I guess if it's in the warranty then it's in the warranty. Philip/. For anyoone in this position, a check with the trading standards reveals that while it is legal to put anything you like in a warranty, it doesn't mean it's legal to uphold. In this case, the fact is that PCW have a policy that requires Windows to be the only OS installed. The goods have a material defect not one which cannot be attributed to installed software. I've been following this quite closely and I have to say that I'm inclined to believe it's FUD. When it was posted on Slashdot one tof the replies was from a Curry's (part of the same group as PC World) area manager who asked the poster to contact him directly. I can't help but wonder if this is in fact more to do with how the case was cracked rather than the software installed. Happens to me too :) Kubuntu, I notice is much more similar to the interface they know and love, so it'd make sense that it'd be the best choice for migrating users from Windows. Is this true? Should I try using Kubuntu as novice users first Linux distro? I tried this with my Dad, also after thinking Kubuntu would better suit a Windows user. A week later I was installing Ubuntu, with GNOME, over the top. Some of KDE's quirks got on his nerves a bit. He has been happy with GNOME (despite being a Windows user (*developer*) for most of his life, and reluctant to learn anything else). Comments? Also on the family PC I installed Xubuntu, which, when the menu is moved to the lower left, and renamed Start, most barely noticed any change (already used to FF and OpenOffice). GNOME does not allow you to set any text for the single-icon main menu. Xfce is simple, clean, and quite fast. The only problem is (well, when I last used it, Edgy) it lacks all the supporting apps that Ubuntu/GNOME has. For example until Edgy, it was required to install GNOME's printer manager to add a printer using a GUI. Still, it is definitely worth a look so you can see for yourself. Matthew. PS. So far I'm finding KDE seems to be a bit more responsive and erm... sharper than gnome, but it doesn't seem to be as solid. I've found myself experiencing more application crashes in kde although as I'm using the tribe 5 release of 7.10 it could be because of that. There seem to be more options for configuration in KDE, but I'm not so sure that new users would use them, and that they may get a bit tied up in them. Gnome layout seems a bit more sane, and I imagine it makes more sense to a new user. The voyage of discovery continues! [Ubuntu-be] Ubuntu à vélo ? opération « Friday Bikeday »
Hello all, Maybe this concerns Brussels, but I'd like to explain my idea anyway, feel FREE to transpose ! ! ! Brussels has recently started the action/operation Friday Bikeday; my idea/question is: what about participating with the goal of increasing the promotion/visualization of the Ubuntu community ? My slogan is: Friday Ubuntu Bikers Day ! Any citizen, administration, enterprise may participate. Why not Ubunteros ? Aren't there any Ubuntu bikers in this city ? I presume yes there are. How To ? well, simply by participating but + getting Ubuntu T-shirts, Sweeters, etc who can be watched more and more in the city at friday ? :-) As you understand, this is only a visualization operation, not a commercial nor political one. But you do probably know how does advertising works: visualizing a topic = to exist, and existing can grow up to knowledge, and knowledge to adheration. /snip FR Y P -- ubuntu-be mailing list / mailto:ubuntu-be@lists.ubuntu.com You can find list info and your subscription configuration options at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-be

Let me start with that I'm no expert on the installation system, but here's what I've learnt so far: $dpkg -S tty1 system-services: /etc/event.d/tty1 $dpkg -L system-services [..] /usr/lib/upstart/migrate-inittab.pl [..] $cat /var/lib/dpkg/info/system-services.postinst {confirms that /usr/lib/upstart/migrate-inittab.pl does the work} That means to my mind that the error is very likely happening within migrate-inittab.pl (Of course it may well be that this was obvious to all involved.) [Bug 89314] Re: serial consoles not properly migrated from inittab to event.d
Based what I learnt and documented in bug #104038, I suspect that this is the problem line: File: /usr/lib/upstart/migrate-inittab.pl (which I've attached so we can all look at the same file - mine comes from Feisty) Likely faulty line 94: $job[$idx] =~ s/^(\s*respawn\s+).*/$1$process/; I'm only able to deduce this (not being a native Perl speaker) based on the following argument: Line 56 starts a foreach, which contains an if-then-else on line 60. If the code was going through the else on line 100, the faulty tty lines would contain the phrase stop on shutdown, which the examples available to me do not have. That means the code is going through the top half of the if-then-else. (Which started on line 60). The code comes to the if-then-else on line 93. If it were to take the else on line 95, then there would be no issue because the 'exec' would be at the start of the line - which it isn't. That means it is going through line 94 which I'm postulating contains some black magic Perl, which I do no yet understand - yay Perl Regex - :( ** Attachment added: This is the file I'm using for my comparison - included for documentation purposes only. http://launchpadlibrarian.net/9287072/migrate-inittab.pl -- serial consoles not properly migrated from inittab to event.d https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/89314 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 139747] Azureus 2.5.0.4 hangs on Gutsy when adding torrents
Public bug reported: Ive been running two test systems for Gutsy, both are clean installs from alpha 4 and not upgrades. Running latest up to date packages as of today. Running Azureus 2.5.0.4 from the tarballed binary they distribute, on both my systems (both Pentium 4 machines). Azureus will crash every time I try to open torrent files, whether thru the dialogue box Open torrent... or by drag-and-dropping files on Azureus. Otherwise Azureus works, it seeds or downloads torrents that were already open. I think this behaviour started sometime after Gutsy alpha 4, but cannot confirm the exact time. Used to work well on both machines. Bug is reproducable and happens every time on performing file adds. Have tried removing Azureus folders, both the .azureus and actual azureus ones, for trying a clean Azureus setup - no help. Public bug reported: Binary package hint: gnome-volume-manager Using both Gutsy and Feisty, When an eSATA drive is connected to the system, in my case via an expresscard adapter, it is not handled in the same manner as a Firewire or USB drive. This is inconsistent behavior compared to Firewire or USB drives. 2. If the drive is FAT32, the user is asked to enter a password for security reasons. If the drive is ext3, no password is required (I have not tested an eSATA ext3 drive with Gutsy since I do not have one available, but I did observe this with Feisty). When you are using XGL direct rendering will not be available (which pretty much makes sense given the way that XGL works). Just because you direct rendering is off doesn't mean your GL won't be accelerated though (it often means this but the XGL case is different). It is not clear exactly what GL problems you were having under XGL from your comment so you will have elaborate a bit more if you feel the bug is about that issue. -- [Gusty] Broken Nvidia driver after upgrade to Gusty (7.10) https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/138933 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
