[Bug 277527] [NEW] gnome-settings-daemon can't properly run in Ubuntu 8.10 beta live CD
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: gnome-settings-daemon I'm testing Ubuntu 8.10 beta live CD. When I load the GNOME desktop, I can see that the Human theme is not loaded. The window title bars are blue instead of brown/orange, and the icons aren't the Human ones. When I try to open System-Preferences-Appearance, I get the following error message (Spanish): No se puede iniciar el gestor de configuración «gnome-settings-daemon». Ad-hoc translation: Couldn't start gnome-settings-daemon settings manager... However, if you try to open System-Preferences-Appearance again, then the Human theme is applied, all changes from blue to orange and the icons changes to Human ones. ** Affects: gnome-settings-daemon (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- gnome-settings-daemon can't properly run in Ubuntu 8.10 beta live CD https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/277527 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 269418] Re: 8.10 installer fails to mount cdrom
Hello, the same here. Ubuntu 8.10 Beta Alternate i386. I added dmesg, syslog and lspci. Made on the same machine running 8.04 and 8.10. Actually the same goes for Desktop CD (both 32 and 64 bit), it just drops to (initramfs) after a while and nothing boots. I can solve the problem following the steps in http://www.ubuntu- es.org/index.php?q=node/41372: 1. Delete the detected printer in System-Administration-Printing 2. Turn off the printer and unplug the USB cable. 3. Open terminal and run the following commands: (download the driver) $ wget -O foo2zjs.tar.gz http://foo2zjs.rkkda.com/foo2zjs.tar.gz (unpacking) $ sudo tar zxf foo2zjs.tar.gz (go into the directory) $ cd foo2zjs (compiling) $ make (getting the firmware file for the printer) $ ./getweb 1020 # for HP LaserJet 1020 $ ./getweb 1018 # for HP LaserJet 1018 $ ./getweb 1005 # for HP LaserJet 1005 $ ./getweb 1000 # for HP LaserJet 1000 (installing the driver) $ sudo make install (configuring the USB hotplug, HP LJ 1000/1005/1018/1020 ) $ sudo make install-hotplug $ sudo make cups 4. Plug the USB cable and turn on the printer. 5. Go to System-Administration-Printer and create the new printer 6. Follow the setup wizard. Therefore, the problem seems to be in the firmware file. hi! What version of NM are you running? Maybe it works better when you try multiple times? If all that doesnt work and the latest packages dont help either maybe you need a dummy password too or something. You could also try the latest network-manager with the broadband wizard - for that install libmbca0 and upgrade to latest. after removing your broadband connection from nm-connection-editor and replugging in your device you should get a wizard that allows you to select your exact provider info. [Bug 276594] Re: New default Intrepid wallpaper is green
Here is my forum post, hope it will help the discussion here, too. Didn't Mark Shuttleworth spoke about being more beautiful than Apple at OSCON 2008? Don't we all want to fix bug #1? The first impression of Ubuntu is THE MOST IMPORTANT PART of attracting new users. Booting has to be more attractive than just plainly copying Windows. The transition from Usplash to GDM has to be a nice fading, the transition from GDM to Gnome has to be a nice fading. Not *BOOM* Black to Brown and *BOOM*Brown to Orange *BOOM* to background... And most of all: the WALLPAPER has to be attractive! A default Gnome screen of 1280x1024 has to bars of both 24px, that leaves 1249280 pixels of wallpaper, if I did my math correct, that's 96.2% of the screen! [Bug 256054] Re: [intrepid] new 0.7 branch ignores /etc/network/interfaces
Ok. A quick heads up on what is planned. Please comment in case you think it won't fit your need. We will introduce a new config for /etc/NetworkManager/nm-system-settings.conf that reads like: [ifupdown] managed=true/false The default will be false for intrepid and depending on how well it works and how well the ifupdown plugin evolves over time we might make this true for jaunty. So what does this mean: 1. in unmanaged mode (managed=false), ifupdown plugin will tell networkmanager to not touch devices whose hal interface.name is configured in /etc/network/interfaces; unmanaged mode doesnt require any changes to the debian ifupdown package itself. Configurations for interfaces in /etc/network/interfaces that have no matching device will still be made available in networkmanager. However, since they are not locked to any device it wont hurt. 2. in managed mode (managed=true), ifupdown plugin will tell networkmanager to lock the parsed configuration to devices by mac address. The device the connection configuration gets locked to will be determined by the interface.name. So configurations like: iface eth0 inet static ... will make networkmanager to always use that configuration for the device whose hal info has the interface.name eth0. 3. in managed mode, we make ifup -a to not auto up the interfaces configured in /etc/network/interfaces. To make this happen we will add an iniparser to the ifupdown package that will teach ifupdown to honour /etc/NetworkManager/nm-system-settings.conf appropriately. -- [intrepid] new 0.7 branch ignores /etc/network/interfaces https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/256054 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
