[Bug 277527] [NEW] gnome-settings-daemon can't properly run in Ubuntu 8.10 beta live CD

2008-10-03 Thread Ricardo Pérez López
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-settings-daemon

I'm testing Ubuntu 8.10 beta live CD.

When I load the GNOME desktop, I can see that the Human theme is not
loaded. The window title bars are blue instead of brown/orange, and the
icons aren't the Human ones.

When I try to open System-Preferences-Appearance, I get the following

GNOME.

Ad-hoc translation:

Couldn't start gnome-settings-daemon settings manager...

However, if you try to open System-Preferences-Appearance again, then
the Human theme is applied, all changes from blue to orange and the
icons changes to Human ones.

[Bug 277458] Re: intrepid kde4 icons are all screwed up

2008-10-03 Thread ANDREA
i've noticed that deleting the whole .kde folder actually solves this
problem. that can't be considered really porting settings succesfully
if i have to delete everything and then reconfigure it myself ... so
it's still a bug. i still have all the config files in a backup so if
anyone has an idea what might have caused this i can try :-)

[Bug 269418] Re: 8.10 installer fails to mount cdrom

2008-10-03 Thread Kaspars Krampis
Hello,

the same here. Ubuntu 8.10 Beta Alternate i386. I added dmesg, syslog
and lspci. Made on the same machine running 8.04 and 8.10.

Actually the same goes for Desktop CD (both 32 and 64 bit), it just
drops to (initramfs) after a while and nothing boots.

It doesn't detect CD device (all previous versions since 5.10 have done
it correctly).

Looks like this could help:

[Bug 277494] Re: Can't print on HP LaserJet 1018 with Ubuntu 8.10 beta live CD

2008-10-03 Thread Ricardo Pérez López
I can solve the problem following the steps in http://www.ubuntu-
es.org/index.php?q=node/41372:

1. Delete the detected printer in System-Administration-Printing

2. Turn off the printer and unplug the USB cable.

3. Open terminal and run the following commands:

  (download the driver)

  $  wget -O foo2zjs.tar.gz http://foo2zjs.rkkda.com/foo2zjs.tar.gz

  (unpacking)

  $ sudo tar zxf foo2zjs.tar.gz

  (go into the directory)

  $ cd foo2zjs

  (compiling)

  $ make

  (getting the firmware file for the printer)

  $ ./getweb 1020 # for HP LaserJet 1020
  $ ./getweb 1018 # for HP LaserJet 1018
  $ ./getweb 1005 # for HP LaserJet 1005
  $ ./getweb 1000 # for HP LaserJet 1000

  (installing the driver)

  $ sudo make install

  (configuring the USB hotplug, HP LJ 1000/1005/1018/1020 )

  $ sudo make install-hotplug

  $ sudo make cups

4. Plug the USB cable and turn on the printer.

5. Go to System-Administration-Printer and create the new printer

6. Follow the setup wizard.

Therefore, the problem seems to be in the firmware file. Couldn't
system-config-printer downloads the firmware automatically?

[Bug 277562] [NEW] Windows doesn't always raise properly when I click on them using Compiz on Ubuntu 8.10 beta live CD

2008-10-03 Thread Ricardo Pérez López
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: compiz

I'm testing Ubuntu 8.10 beta live CD.

Steps to reproduce:

1. Run Ubuntu 8.10 beta live CD.
2. Select Normal or Extra Visual Effects - this actives Compiz.
3. Since then, sometimes, when I click on a window to select it, the window
doesn't raise properly. The title bar remains in grey and doesn't change to
orange/brown (seems to be unselected). It's very irritating, and this problem
doesn't appear on Hardy.

TJ put together a patch to make this work with KVM 74, and I've

[Bug 188473] Re: Mythtv DVB-T channel scanning and importing broken

2008-10-03 Thread Davias
I always had problem importing channel conf with DVB-T (DVB-S works ok) but
also with scanning:
scanning in mythbuntu worked in 7.10 using a mix of GB, Germany Spain
def.conf. to get italian channels.

Now since 8.04, it does not find anymore Mediaset2 network, which is found ok
using scan of dvb-utils.
It finds all other network, even data only and DVBH (discarded) but not the
Mediaset2 network, with the main channels Rete4, Italia1 e Canale5... annoying.

And also inputing direct freq. does not work.

This is the same with 8.04.1, 8.10 alpha 6 now Beta1

My config is:
Athlon 2000+ on MSI K7T Turbo 512MB
Nvidia GF5200 AGP
Technosat Skystar2
Hauppauge HVR 1100

[Bug 277543] [NEW] MurrinaStormCloud has some confusing characteristics

2008-10-03 Thread Vincent
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xubuntu-artwork

Just tested the beta of Xubuntu 8.10, and the MurrinaStormCloud theme
has some oddities. The most confusing one is that Close buttons (off the
top of my head the Close button in Abiwords Sharing dialog is an
example) look like they are being pressed while they're not.

Furthermore, the Firefox tabs now contain the odd gradient-thingy (i.e.
like buttons do) which looks a bit strange.

Unfortunately the whole thing crashed on me before I could make a

[Bug 277459] Re: Sierra mobile broadband card doesn't work

2008-10-03 Thread Alexander Sack
hi!

What version of NM are you running? Maybe it works better when you try
multiple times?

If all that doesnt work and the latest packages dont help either maybe
you need a dummy password too or something. See
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/NetworkManager/Hardware/3G for providers that
are known to require that.

You could also try the latest network-manager with the broadband wizard
- for that install libmbca0 and upgrade to latest. after removing your
broadband connection from nm-connection-editor and replugging in your
device you should get a wizard that allows you to select your exact
provider info.

Also for GSM you should use *99# as number and 777# for cdma.

Hi there Kjell,

I think I will get there in a moment but please stop referring to that

  deb http://ddebs.ubuntu.com hardy-updates main universe
  deb http://ddebs.ubuntu.com hardy-proposed main universe
  deb http://ddebs.ubuntu.com hardy-security main universe

does not work. I just get error messages on apt-get update.

Also I doubt the packages *-dbgsym=* are still called that way in
intrepid. Should that be *-dbg=*?

If there is no updated wiki text yet, please write a quick text for that
yourself.

Thank you,

[Bug 277526] [NEW] [8.10] Installation in non-CD languages broken

2008-10-03 Thread Timo Jyrinki
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: ubiquity

It seems that installing in most languages is again broken. Using 8.10
beta installer with network connection enabled during installation.
Chose Finnish as the installation language, but language support was not
downloaded from the Internet.

After installation, which is not probably related to ubiquity (or is the
note?), Ubuntu is now able to tell that language support is not complete.
However:
1. the note itself is not translated, including the buttons
2. the language download is still not offered in the following dialog, because
of bug #135752

So neither the pre-installation or post-installation language support
downloading works, leaving most people installing in languages not
included on the CD with English.

  The different reports have different ideas of what triggers this bug, this is
what happened to me when I first reported it:
  * Set Visual Effects to 'Normal'. Restarted X (CTRL+ALT+DEL) and it still
worked, rebooted and it still worked.
  * Set Visual Effects to 'Extra'. Restarted X as above and it still worked,
rebooted and it worked (it seems to still be working now) so I started
Evolution as soon as I grabbed the top of the window to check the window wobble
effect was working, then this crash. I must emphasize that compiz has not
actually stopped and is still working. But something generated the crash
report, so here it is:

[Bug 277564] [NEW] python-xpcom not available for xulrunner 1.9

2008-10-03 Thread Morgan Collett
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xulrunner-1.9

http://packages.ubuntu.com/intrepid/python-xpcom exists in intrepid but
is built from xulrunner (1.8). We need a python-xpcom(-1.9?) for
xulrunner-1.9 too.

This is a dependency for sugar-hulahop for the Sugar project
(https://edge.launchpad.net/sucrose) - I'm attempting to get that synced
from debian into universe, and in my PPA it FTBFS because of that:
http://launchpadlibrarian.net/18159800/buildlog_ubuntu-hardy-i386.sugar-

[Bug 277488] Re: First reading of a file fails (incorrect username password), subsequent reads OK

2008-10-03 Thread Robin Emery
** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: curlftpfs
+
+ UPDATE: Downgrading libcurl3-gnutils to libcurl3-gnutls_7.16.4-2 makes
+ the problem disappear. Presumably some incompatability between curlftpfs
+ and libcurl?

  Initially, I installed the 0.9.1 version of this package on my Hardy
  server installation. Connecting to the ftp server works fine with the
  correct username and password, but when I try to read a file, the
  incorrect username and password are used, resulting in a permission
  denied message when reading the file. Debug output from curlftpfs:

   USER test2
   331 Password required for test2.
   PASS /.DS_Store
   530 User cannot log in.
  * Access denied: 530

  The username and password are incorrect. All subsequent reads work OK
  for the rest of the session.

  This is the same as the Debian bug #461455
  http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=461455

  According to that bug report, the problem is fixed in the new release
  (0.9.2-1), available in the Intrepid repository. As all the dependancies
  of the Intrepid package are satisfied I installed it onto my Hardy
  server. The problem is still present: I do not believe this bug has been
  fixed.

  My system:
  Description:Ubuntu 8.04.1
  Release:8.04

  I used the i386 version of the package.

  Thanks,
  Robin

[Bug 277423] Re: crashes on ati HD2400 in xf86CrtcSetMode+0x5da

2008-10-03 Thread Tormod Volden
It seems like the debug symbols are still missing:
2: /usr/lib/xorg/modules/drivers//radeon_drv.so [0xb7b81d41]

Make sure you really installed both debug packages and restart the X
server. Maybe you installed the -dbg package for radeonhd instead?

Please just attach the Xorg.0.log directly next time.

 Why X does not start radeonhd after radeon crashes?
radeon is not supposed to crash. We don't design for failure :)

[Bug 276594] Re: New default Intrepid wallpaper is green

2008-10-03 Thread MarniX
Here is my forum post, hope it will help the discussion here, too.

Didn't Mark Shuttleworth spoke about being more beautiful than Apple at OSCON
2008? Don't we all want to fix bug #1?

The first impression of Ubuntu is THE MOST IMPORTANT PART of attracting
new users. Booting has to be more attractive than just plainly copying
Windows. The transition from Usplash to GDM has to be a nice fading, the
transition from GDM to Gnome has to be a nice fading. Not *BOOM* Black
to Brown and *BOOM*Brown to Orange *BOOM* to background...

And most of all: the WALLPAPER has to be attractive! A default Gnome screen of
1280x1024 has to bars of both 24px, that leaves 1249280 pixels of wallpaper, if
I did my math correct, that's 96.2% of the screen! When the wallpaper is as
boring as this one, users will just say: That looks really unprofesional, how
can I trust this OS?

[Bug 277568] [NEW] invoking hostname as domainname does not produce results described in --help

2008-10-03 Thread Graham Inggs
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: hostname

According to 'hostname --help', invoking hostname as domainname should
display the NIS/YP domain name, instead the host name is displayed.
Transcript follows:

$ hostname
dreamcoat
$ hostname -y
che.uct.ac.za
$ ln -s /bin/hostname domainname
$ ./domainname
dreamcoat

Output of 'hostname --help':

$ hostname --help
Usage: hostname [-v] {hostname|-F file} set host name (from file)
  domainname [-v] {nisdomain|-F file} set NIS domain name (from file)
  hostname [-v] [-d|-f|-s|-a|-i|-y] display formated name
  hostname [-v] display host name

  hostname -V|--version|-h|--help print info and exit

   dnsdomainname=hostname -d, {yp,nis,}domainname=hostname -y

   -s, --short   short host name
   -a, --alias   alias names
   -i, --ip-address addresses for the host name
   -f, --fqdn, --longlong host name (FQDN)
   -d, --domain  DNS domain name
   -y, --yp, --nis NIS/YP domain name
   -F, --fileread host name or NIS domain name from given file

  This command can get or set the host name or the NIS domain name. You can
  also get the DNS domain or the FQDN (fully qualified domain name).
  Unless you are using bind or NIS for host lookups you can change the
  FQDN (Fully Qualified Domain Name) and the DNS domain name (which is
  part of the FQDN) in the /etc/hosts file.

As some commercial packages expect the NIS/YP domain name, I suggest
inserting the following lines in hostname.c:

   if (!strcmp(progname, domainname))
   type = NIS;

immediately below the lines:

   if (!strcmp(progname, dnsdomainname))
   type = DNS;

Alternatively, the help text should be updated to match the current
behavior.

I'm having the same problem with the Intrepid beta.
I didn't try to install but I saw essentially the same output on the x-server

The difference in my case is the unsupported device is a GeForce 8300 (not
GeForce 8300 GS). I'm using an Asus M3N-HD/HDMI motherboard with on-board
graphics as part of the GeForce 8300 chipset.

The NV driver does work just fine with this chipset - at least it did in

[Bug 273693] Re: PulseAudio/ALSA problem with Skype

2008-10-03 Thread Jason McMullan
I can confirm that dmitry's workaround #2 (the
/etc/ld.so.conf.d/alsa{32,64}.conf changes)
work perfectly for me.

I would recommend that this change go into the ALSA packages.

amount of ifup-ing and if-down will get it back until I restart.

How can this be? Why?
How can it be prevented?

Linux, and how can I recommend it to friends?

[Bug 256054] Re: [intrepid] new 0.7 branch ignores /etc/network/interfaces

2008-10-03 Thread Alexander Sack
Ok. A quick heads up on what is planned. Please comment in case you
think it won't fit your need.

We will introduce a new config for /etc/NetworkManager/nm-system-settings.conf
that reads like:

[ifupdown]
managed=true/false

The default will be false for intrepid and depending on how well it works and
how well the ifupdown plugin evolves over time we might make this true for
jaunty.

So what does this mean:

1. in unmanaged mode (managed=false), ifupdown plugin will tell
networkmanager to not touch devices whose hal interface.name is
configured in /etc/network/interfaces; unmanaged mode doesnt require any
changes to the debian ifupdown package itself. Configurations for
interfaces in /etc/network/interfaces that have no matching device will
still be made available in networkmanager. However, since they are not
locked to any device it wont hurt.

2. in managed mode (managed=true), ifupdown plugin will tell
networkmanager to lock the parsed configuration to devices by mac
address. The device the connection configuration gets locked to will be
determined by the interface.name. So configurations like:

  iface eth0 inet static ...

will make networkmanager to always use that configuration for the device
whose hal info has the interface.name eth0.

3. in managed mode, we make ifup -a to not auto up the interfaces
configured in /etc/network/interfaces. To make this happen we will add
an iniparser to the ifupdown package that will teach ifupdown to honour
/etc/NetworkManager/nm-system-settings.conf appropriately.

of an encrypted page, it looks like the page already exists in the NFS
inode page map when it shouldn't. If NFS were to just ignore the issue
rather than bug out, this may work fine. In any event, this is yet another
NFS corner case that we will need to scrutinize.

[Bug 276594] Re: New default Intrepid wallpaper is green

2008-10-03 Thread Joshua Blount
While I appreciate that everyone wants to voice their opinion, it seems
we've come to the consensus that the wallpaper is not quite up to par
with how we feel about Ubuntu.

Perhaps at this point it would be more valuable to spend our time
hacking around in GIMP or Inkscape to produce some better options,
rather than repeatedly agreeing that this wallpaper isn't quite up to
par.

Please don't take this as anything other than a constructive suggestion,
and of course feel free to disagree; however I won't be able to respond
because I'll be spending my freetime working on Ubuntu wallpapers. :)

Please update the bug with the required information and subscribe

Uploaded, thanks for your contribution.

I made one small tweak, removing the mention of the maintainer
field from the changelog, as this happens to every package modified
in Ubuntu it's not really useful information, and convention is now
to not mention the change in the changelog.

Thanks,

James

[Bug 277582] [NEW] writer does not lock out concurrent file user

2008-10-03 Thread John Mullen
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: openoffice.org

Recently installed openoffice.org suite ( Version 1:2.4.1-1ubuntu2 ) on
a new 8.04LTS server.

Noticed that 2 users could have the same writer file open at the same
time.

Edited the /usr/lib/openoffice/program/soffice file so that

SAL_ENABLE_FILE_LOCKING = 1
export SAL_ENABLE_FILE_LOCKING

is forced.

Locking seems to work OK now.

[Bug 183685] Re: compiz.real crashed with SIGSEGV

2008-10-03 Thread Kjell Braden
The wiki page actually does work for intrepid, the only thing you have
to change is:

1. Add the following line to /etc/apt/sources.list:

  deb http://ddebs.ubuntu.com intrepid main universe

Instead of the hardy, hardy-updates/proposed/security lines.

Afterwards, install the necessary packages with -dbgsym (compiz-core-
dbgsym, compiz-plugins-dbgsym, compiz-gnome-dbgsym, compiz-fusion-
plugins-main-dbgsym, compiz-fusion-plugins-extra-dbgsym, and maybe
others), and go on with:

a. Now you make a Backtrace. (https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Backtrace)

Thanks
