[ubuntu-art] New member
I am a new member to volunteer to work on Ubuntu Art and I am excited. I have wanted to give something back for quite some time now, but it is hard to convince people you will work for free. I tried he Ping several non-profit orgs. But not one replied to my offer to help. Anyhow, I am a web designer who is learning PHP and I work on Gimp as well as the Adobe creative suite. I just finished my Master of Technology, Graphic Information Technology in August at Arizona State University. I moved to Houston, TX shortly after that, and I am ready to contribute to the Ubuntu Art Project. Welcome Joel, It's great to have you here. Are you mainly in the area of design and production (html/php) or can you do drawing art as well? What kinds of things would you like to help with? Do you know any python? PLaces like the loco directory need more design help and general help, there are also lots of small pieces that could do with some art/design attention. Hi listers, Firstly, I read on a tweet today that it's Ubuntu's 7th birthday today. Happy birthday Ubuntu! Now for the real reason for the post. I want to create a simple database that I can distribute to others and was hoping to come up with a solution that just allowed me to distribute it as a standalone package in much the same way that MS users can with Access. I want it to run under linux. If it was cross platform, that would be even better but not essential. I do not want to be in the position of saying that you have to have a given package installed to run the database. For example, I could easily produce what I want in LibreOffice Base but would then have to assume that recipients run LibreOffice. I have googled and the only programs that appear to come close are Kexi and Firebird. Does anyone have any experiences of either or recommendations for other packages. I have played about with Kexi which runs under KDE desktop but it appears to crash with boring regularity. (That could be because I favour the Gnome desktop.) As I said, the proposed database is simple and does not necessarily have to be relational although it will contain many records. I want to keep records of magazine articles from a variety of publications but can't find a bespoke package that fits what I want to do. Any suggestions would be gratefully received. There are Windows and Mac projects but I have no idea how mature they are. If users don't need to directly access the database then look at SQLite, which is cross-platform, included with most Linux distributions and easy to bundle. It's used in Firefox among other things, and there is a plugin for Firefox if direct access is required. Next up from that is something like HSQLDB, which is the engine in OpenOffice.org/LibreOffice which is written in Java and can be plugged into a package as part of a distribution. A spreadsheet package would be ideal, multiple sheets in a workbook so you have your tables. Can be distributed as ods,xls,csv... I'm guessing when you say you'd like to distribute the database, you'd also like to distribute some sort of a user interface to it? Else SQLite is popular for bundling SQL dbs, and SQLite is available on basically every platform, or Couchdb seems popular for this NoSQL thingy. Joomla! has a brilliant extension available called Fabrik which is essentially a database form design tool that allows the user to build custom storage for pretty much anything (I use it frequently on websites we build for customers). As it is a Joomla! extension it runs atop of the same MySQL database. I have knocked up a few sites using Drupal and Wordpress and never thought of CMS as a front ends. I'm getting old! If you go to a lot of flash sites (hard to avoid) with Chrome / Chromium then that's a lot of flash plugin that can leak memory and potentially cause issues even after Chromium is closed. Try a day with a maximum of 10 tabs in on browser (and one browser window) and see if you still get performance issues. Also check if you have ubuntuone-syncd running. In my humble experience running 100 tabs in any browser for an extended period of time can lead to slow response times for your browser. If you go to a lot of flash sites (hard to avoid) with Chrome / Chromium then that's a lot of flash plugin that can leak memory and potentially cause issues even after Chromium is closed. Have you thought about using flash block this will then allow you to click on any flash components you want by just clicking on them, It seems to be a lot of the flash on a site is irrelevant, adverts or other rubbish so out of say 10 flash components 1 may be useful to what you want to do. Try a day with a maximum of 10 tabs in on browser (and one browser window) and see if you still get performance issues. Also check if you have ubuntuone-syncd running. I have flashblock for firefox and it makes a big difference, making browsing more lightweight than Chromium without. I didnt know you could get flashblock for Chromium, so will add that immediately. I actually found out what was causing the problem... It was entirely the fault of Compiz, once reloaded the desktop was stable again. My observations on 11.10's accessibility
Hi all, Well, after a bit of playing around, I did get Ubuntu Oneiric to install. On my machine, I had to press ctrl+s regularly throughout the boot-up process. This was the only way I got the drums to play, otherwise, it would go straight to the Unity-3D environment without giving me the chance to enable the accessible installer. The machine, if it makes a difference, is a Samsung NF310 netbook. After playing with it for most of the day, I've some observations, both positive and negative, that I'd like to note. First off, let me say that I've enabled the proposed updates repository and updated before I started using Oneiric. ** Desktop environment 1. The toggle screen reader key is not enabled by default. I really believe this should be set, if not globally, than at least when an accessible install is done. There seems to be no way to reliably force Orca to load on login, so setting such a shortcut would be of great help. 2. Many menu items in the application menu (the new global Unity menu bar) read as check items when they are not, and those that are often incorrectly report their status. Also, the top menu bar items read as label rather than as a menu item. The check item issue is, imho, more important than the misreading of the label role, as it sometimes reports incorrect status. This bug bleeds over into all applications that integrate with the global menu bar. 3. The QT support works very well. An excellent job on that one, this is a landmark in accessibility for us. 4. Some status menu items, such as the battery, read as simply image. Does anyone have a reliable way to check the battery status without going into a terminal, since this icon doesn't read? 5. Privilege escalation is working properly. Excellent. ** Mozilla (Firefox and Thunderbird) 1. Internal frames on some web pages seem to cause Orca to say grayed until you arrow past them. This makes reading of these frames difficult and, if one is not careful, tabbing around too quickly in these areas will cause Firefox to lock up. Anyone else see this? 2. Hi That's what I was wondering. I know I can install gdm and switch to it, but I was curious if there was another way. It's not that big of an issue, having the login screen talk is more a factor of convenience than necessity. When you say it seems to be the packages themselves, do you mean that Thunderbird and Firefox themselves have this problem as released from Mozilla, or just the Ubuntu builds? Hi I installed from a CDROM, specifically the Desktop live CD image for i386. The CD drive itself connects via USB, but I doubt that would make a difference. In regard to the keyboard shortcut to turn on Orca, I wasn't referring to the environment on the cd, but the environment you get once installed. Not sure who's problem this is
Using gedit use ctrl-o to select a file to open. I see no place to type a file name and when I start trying to work through the varios lists to select a file gedit crashes. No errors on screen. Is there a place I can look to see if it is logging an error elsewhere? Ubuntu AU ISO localisation defaults suggestions
Good evening team, As per: https://blueprints.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+spec/desktop-o-cd-localization I've made the following blueprint to track the status/effort to create a localised Ubuntu AU iso: https://blueprints.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+spec/ubuntu-au-iso-l10n At the current time, the scope of the implementation is fairly narrow to what we can localise/customise, however I think this first step is crucial to creating/localising the Ubuntu AU experience. You can add suggestions to the default settings at: http://pad.ubuntu.com/s5Asqt2GWm Just add a name and type away. Hopefully we'll gather some ideas about these general settings and then tackle some of the more indepth issues later, ie. extra packages and wallpaper packs. Olá, sei que é de 5 dias atrás mas vou dar minha contribuição.
uso aqui ubuntu 11.10 64 bits.
Também acesso o bb pela internet. pelo que lembro aqui funcionou bem
instalando pela central de programas o plug-in java icedtea. Tente
instalar lá e ver no firefox (about:plugins) se o java está
funcionando.
No entanto tive alguns problemas do java começar a comer memória e
processador aqui e resolvi trocar para a jre da oracle. então vou
relatar o que fiz.
no próprio site da oracle diz que usuário final deve usar a jre6 por
enquanto (não sei se aplica-se ao icedtea). foi o que eu baixei
http://www.java.com/pt_BR/download/manual.jsp?locale=pt_BR
No momento não tinha os pacotes da oracle no repositório, então baixei
do site da oracle. Apesar de não ser .deb funciona bem tanto 32 quanto
64 bits, mas tem um porém... Lá diz para usar a versão 32 bits do java
para applet, mentira! pelo menos pro nosso caso, se for ubuntu de 64
bits vem com firefox de 64 bits, e pelas minhas tentativas, conclui
que não dá para instalar o plugin de 32 bits nele, mas o de 64 bits
vem com plugin sim e funciona muito bem, só fazer o link! no meu caso,
baixei o de 64 bits, instalei como root em /usr/local (é só executar
como root que ele vai extrair),
Como eu já tinha o plugin icedtea instalado, só usei o configurador de
alternativas (que tem na central de programas) criando e setando uma
nova alternativa para mozilla-javaplugin.so:
{localdainstalacao}/lib/amd64/libnpjp2.so
se não tiver, outro plugin antes, creio que funcione criar um link
simbólico ln -s {localdainstalacao}/lib/amd64/libnpjp2.so
/usr/lib/mozilla/plugins/
como essa forma não resolve dependências, se precisar mantenha o
openjdk isntalado e use o configurador de alternativas, disponível na
central de programas, para editar todas as alternativas começando com
java para o da oracle =)
obs: não precisei fazer nada mais para funcionar no Google Chrome (não
me pergunte porque não uso o chromium =x), do .deb oficial deles.
obs2: para testar, de um about:plugins no navegador (firefox, chrome)
e veja se o java está aparecendo. creio que o plugin java da oracle
tem a mensagem ligeiramente diferente com um link pro site
java.sun.com, e no google chrome o about:plugins aparece o local de
instalação da jre
obs3: parece que já está no repositório o java da oracle, com os nomes
sun-java6-jre sun-java6-bin, no entanto ainda não tem o java plugin,
pelo menos para 64 bits, talvez porque essa jre seja 32.
obs4: estou com um problema ainda com java e som, mesmo o java sun do
repositório ubuntu, mas é assunto para outro tópico
se ficou confuso só perguntar que eu explico melhor

[Ubuntu-BR] java oracle sem som no 11.10!
Pessoal estou com um problema para rodar som em programas java ou applets java, parece que ele não está usando o alsa e não consegue emitir som. Bom dia Jackson, Primeiramente vamos reaproveitar os tópicos. Não precisa você criar um novo tópico (mandar um novo e-mail ao invés de responder) para avisar que foi resolvido seu problema. Do jeito que você fez a lista acaba ficando desorganizada. Por outro lado, você avisar que foi resolvido seu problema é extremamente importante, mas vamos unir o útil ao agradável. Com relação á sua dúvida, o correto seria realmente criar um novo tópico, mas vou aproveitar o gancho e responder ela. A instalação limpa refere-se àquela que ocorre a formatação da partição /, instalando o sistema do zero. E a suja é o contrário, não ocorre a formatação, e sim apenas a remoção dos pacotes antigos e colocação dos novos. Esse termo instalação suja surgiu aqui na lista por ser apenas o contrário da limpa, não que gere problemas ou outra coisa que caracterize sujeira. Bom dia Alexandre, Edite o arquivo /etc/groups com o seguinte comando: sudo gedit /etc/groups Então navegue até a linha onde inicia com bluetooth:x: e coloque o seu usuário depois do último dois pontos ( : ). No meu caso está assim: bluetooth:x:115:jefersonal Então reinicie seu computador (apenas reiniciando a sessão basta) e tente novamente. que não dá para instalar o plugin de 32 bits nele, mas o de 64 bits
vem com plugin sim e funciona muito bem, só fazer o link! no meu caso,
baixei o de 64 bits, instalei como root em /usr/local (é só executar
como root que ele vai extrair),
Como eu já tinha o plugin icedtea instalado, só usei o configurador de
alternativas (que tem na central de programas) criando e setando uma
nova alternativa para mozilla-javaplugin.so:
{localdainstalacao}/lib/amd64/libnpjp2.so
se não tiver, outro plugin antes, creio que funcione criar um link
simbólico ln -s {localdainstalacao}/lib/amd64/libnpjp2.so
/usr/lib/mozilla/plugins/
como essa forma não resolve dependências, se precisar mantenha o
openjdk isntalado e use o configurador de alternativas, disponível na
central de programas, para editar todas as alternativas começando com
java para o da oracle =)
obs: não precisei fazer nada mais para funcionar no Google Chrome (não
me pergunte porque não uso o chromium =x), do .deb oficial deles.
obs2: para testar, de um about:plugins no navegador (firefox, chrome)
e veja se o java está aparecendo. creio que o plugin java da oracle
tem a mensagem ligeiramente diferente com um link pro site
java.sun.com, e no google chrome o about:plugins aparece o local de
instalação da jre
obs3: parece que já está no repositório o java da oracle, com os nomes
sun-java6-jre sun-java6-bin, no entanto ainda não tem o java plugin,
pelo menos para 64 bits, talvez porque essa jre seja 32.
obs4: estou com um problema ainda com java e som, mesmo o java sun do
repositório ubuntu, mas é assunto para outro tópico

Bom dia a todos. Zandré, só para complementar: As atualizações do dia 17 e 18/10 resolveram quase todos os problemas que eu tinha com o Ubuntu 11.10. Bluetooth, Nautilus, Compiz, Barra do Unity, Xserver, Banshee, Central de Programas, Totem. tudo funcionando como um relógio. Fiz uma nova instalação, dessa vez usando: Placa mãe Via PC3000 ( Processador soldado na placa de 1.6 Ghz) 01 GB de RAM DDR II Monitor de CRT 17 pol. LG Flatron Disco IDE Maxtor de 80 GB. Como eu esperava, não funciona o Unity 3D, somente o 2D (video onboard -- P4M800 Pro). Instalação padrão somente com o aplicativo Stoq instalado, e a maquina roda redondinha, rápida, sem nenhum problema aparente (claro, depois de se atualizar o sistema). Meus cumprimentos. Quando eu estava usando a versão testing do Ubuntu 11.10 estava com jdk da
Oracle e conseguia executar o modulo
de proteção em java. Agora fiz uma instalação limpa do só que instalei o
openjdk até porque não gostei da atitude da Oracle
com a comunidade Linux.

Olá para todos! Meu nome é Cláudio Caldas, moro no Rio de Janeiro e utilizo o Linux desde 2005. Atualmente, nesta máquina utilizo o Ubuntu 11.10 e em minha máquina de produção um sabor de linux, variante do debian, chamado Musix. Olá para todos! Eu utilizava o Ubuntu 10.10 com configurações personalizadas para o tema e, creio, os diretórios, tinham o seu ícone padrão. Fiz a atualização para o 11.04 e, em seguida, para o 11.10 através da ferramenta de gerenciamento de atualizações. Agora, na versão 11.10 a ferramenta para personalizar a aparência, mudou e não há mais a possibilidade de mudar as cores do tema que utilizo, o ambience. É fato isso? Como posso personalizar novamente? Existe algum aplicativo, que eu possa baixar pela Central de programas Ubuntu, para esta finalidade? Correto Adauto, digo isso porque tambem sou correntista do santander
forcadamente, e no firefox 7.02, que uso, acusou isso ao acessar o home
banking...a mensagem correta eh algo como complemento nao suporte pelo
firefox. Parece que o java da sun nao vai mais ser usado no ubuntu, visto
que o openjdk amadureceu o suficiente para suprir a ausencia do da sun.

para applet, mentira! pelo menos pro nosso caso, se for ubuntu de 64
bits vem com firefox de 64 bits, e pelas minhas tentativas, conclui
que não dá para instalar o plugin de 32 bits nele, mas o de 64 bits
vem com plugin sim e funciona muito bem, só fazer o link! no meu
caso,
baixei o de 64 bits, instalei como root em /usr/local (é só executar
como root que ele vai extrair),
Como eu já tinha o plugin icedtea instalado, só usei o configurador
de
alternativas (que tem na central de programas) criando e setando uma
nova alternativa para mozilla-javaplugin.so:
{localdainstalacao}/lib/amd64/libnpjp2.so
se não tiver, outro plugin antes, creio que funcione criar um link
simbólico ln -s {localdainstalacao}/lib/amd64/libnpjp2.so
/usr/lib/mozilla/plugins/
como essa forma não resolve dependências, se precisar mantenha o
openjdk isntalado e use o configurador de alternativas, disponível na
central de programas, para editar todas as alternativas começando com
java para o da oracle =)
obs: não precisei fazer nada mais para funcionar no Google Chrome
(não
me pergunte porque não uso o chromium =x), do .deb oficial deles.
obs2: para testar, de um about:plugins no navegador (firefox, chrome)
e veja se o java está aparecendo. creio que o plugin java da oracle
tem a mensagem ligeiramente diferente com um link pro site
java.sun.com, e no google chrome o about:plugins aparece o local de
instalação da jre
obs3: parece que já está no repositório o java da oracle, com os
nomes
sun-java6-jre sun-java6-bin, no entanto ainda não tem o java plugin,
pelo menos para 64 bits, talvez porque essa jre seja 32.
obs4: estou com um problema ainda com java e som, mesmo o java sun do
repositório ubuntu, mas é assunto para outro tópico
se ficou confuso só perguntar que eu explico melhor

Obrigado aos que responderam... Bem, não tinha reparado, porém na inicialização vc tem as opções Ubuntu e Ubuntu 2D. Eu estava usando a Ubuntu e as minhas configurações tinham sumido, agora, usando a opção 2D, tudo voltou ao normal. Também instalei o xfce4 que é um gerenciador leve e agradável de usar. [Ubuntu-BR] Sumiu o relógio do painel do Unity após a atualização para o Oneiric
Salve todos, Fiz três instalações do zero e uma atualização bem sucedida, entretanto na última atualização eu tive uns problemas com o disco que me forçaram a parar tudo para rodar o fsck e só então prosseguir. Isso me resultou em uma instalação muito estranha que demorou absurdas 20h para serem concluídas. Здравствуйте ! Хочу вот установить Ubuntu по соседству с мастдаем XP и ?7. Исходные данные: RAM - 2 Гб HDD1 (150 Гб) первичный раздел (50 Гб) - мастдай номер 7. расширенный раздел (50 Гб) - мастдай XP неразмеченное пространство (50 Гб) - сюда хочу поставить Ubuntu HDD2 (1,5 Тб) - файловая помойка Вопрос в том, как поделить неразмеченное пространство для Убунты - сколько на /, сколько на /home, сколько на swap и сколько еще куда ? И еще: инсталлятор Убунты (там, где решается вопрос о разделении дискового пространства) имеет опцию первичный/логический ... Вопрос в том, как поделить неразмеченное пространство для Убунты - сколько на /, сколько на /home, сколько на swap и сколько еще куда ? Установщик внутри выделенных 50 гб всё сам сделает. Загрузчик я бы поставил в MBR - 3 системы будет в меню загрузки. Тут важнее корректно подвинуть Windows, если ещё не подвинут. Но это средствами Windows лучше сделать, хотя XP нормально переносила у меня подвигание сторонними программами. Я бы не был так категоричен с 4-5 гигабайтами под / так как первое что приходит на ум это проблемы с обновлением до след. версии ubuntu. After completing upgrade, I believe this is related to distribution update process. The reason is probably with wrong order or wrong choice of Perl packages being upgraded during do-release-upgrade.
