Cadence Testing -- my thoughts on how the cycle has gone
I know, lots of emails today -- it's quite a week to be in QA :-) We've been chatting on and off via the list about this idea of cadence testing, and the struggles we've hit. I wanted to share my thoughts and ideas on what's gone right and what's gone wrong with cadence testing this cycle. http://www.theorangenotebook.com/2012/08/the-grand-cadence-experiment.html Secondly, I want to say a big thank you to everyone who participated in these cadence testing events. They were a mass of confusion and pain for you, I know. We learned many things from executing the events, and I'm proud to say together we achieved what was asked of us. Going forward however, I'd like us to continue the conversation of bringing in value and being a larger part of the release process. My goal is to keep you informed about what's going on so that can happen. We'll keep iterating forward! [ubuntu-in] A nice feel good story with Ubuntu and Linux playing a good part
Hi Just came across this story of Mayank Sharma also known as geekybodhi. Am wondering if he is / (you are) on this list or have being in and around the irc channels. ** Article and link is below http://www.ubuntuvibes.com/2012/08/after-complete-memory-loss-mayank-gets.html After Complete Memory Loss, Mayank Gets It Back Using Internet and Linux The Times of India, an Indian newspaper featured a story today about a young man who lost his memory because of a chronic disease and then how he gets it back Using Linux, Internet and other modern gadgets and services. The story was on front page and it caught my attention when I got hold of the newspaper in the morning. Below is a summary: Rakesh Sharma, a New Delhi resident, gets a new Intel Pentium 166MHz desktop PC in 1997. Together with his two sons Mayank and Shashank, he installs Linux on it. Life was going good for them but unfortunately in 2009 Mayank was diagnosed with tubercular meningitis (TBM), an infection of the central nervous system. By the end of January 2010, Mayank had lost his memory. After recovering from the disease, Mayank still couldn't remember anything. He was told he was a technology writer by profession, published in several international magazines. Mayank decided that he will do anything to relearn everything and find clues to know who he was. His father and brother taught him to read and write. Then he started off with mobile T9 dictionary that taught him new words. He downloaded and watched BBC radio programmes on pronunciation and grammar. He had a Linux computer to play with. He Google'd himself and discovered articles he had written for various publications, such as Linux. com, IBM developerWorks and many others. He found couple of books he has authored for a UK-based publisher on Google Books. Then he searched for his username, 'geekybodhi' that showed him all comments he had posted on forums. Gmail and Facebook were his next stop. He searched into more than 9000 emails and chat logs on Gmail, found his personal and professional contacts and got to know more about himself. On Facebook he connected with his old friends specially using 'People You May Know' feature. He created a Facebook Page called 'Help me build my Memory Palace', where his friends wrote about him. Next he finds his Flickr page only to rekindle his passion for photography. Apart from these websites he also used old CDs, Linux ebooks, Youtube, Wikipedia, Twitter etc. to get his memory back. Today he uses Ubuntu on his computer and Ubuntu's cloud storage service, Ubuntu One to put up links on his website. On his blog, he writes about Linux, Ubuntu, Wayland, Gnome 3, XFCE, Debian, Fedora etc. Some of his comments, taken from The Times of India article: My family has helped tremendously in my recovery. We still have that 166MHz desktop. When I saw that computer, I recalled some of the details about the day when we first got it, and the Linux OS that we were trying to install. I had to relearn everything like a new-born. Chronologically, I am 29, but if you ask me I feel no older than a three-year-old - except that I have the ability to articulate my experience. Be it the exhaustive threads hashing out articles and book edits with my editors, or sending out music recommendations to friends, every email tells me something about myself in my own words. Without Facebook, I can't imagine connecting with the people I have connected with. Even if I dug up old phonebooks, how would I reach out to batch mates in Manchester and California or my editors, former and current, in USA and England? Since I didn't know the roads, I used OpenStreetMaps to find my way around. I now record my GPS tracks too. Wikipedia was invaluable in finding out more about any subject. And its See also section points you to other related topics, giving context. I had KeePassX set up on my computer which remembered all my old usernames and passwords, making it easy to log into services. I now use LastPass for the same purpose. Apart from helping me in being more creative with my words, I use Twitter to connect with neurologists from around the world. Thanks to The Times of India ** regards Ram -- ubuntu-in mailing list ubuntu-in@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-in

Hi all, I've got agreement from Canonical to use a room in our London office for the Global Jam between 7th and 9th September. http://www.londontown.com/LondonInformation/Shopping/Blue_Fin_Building/edb5/ I'd like us to do maybe two of the three days, possibly Friday and Saturday or Saturday and Sunday, and need to see which days are most popular. If people are keen to do all three days then I will have to find another Canonical employee to escort people on that day. What I need to know though is how many people would be up for coming and on what days. I need this so I can choose the right day, make sure we have the right size room booked and inform security. I will confirm with you all nearer the time, so think of this as a tentative way to gauge which day is most po http://doodle.com/6vcb8a6rcgcewhf6 Just click the above link, put in your name and tell me which day you'd prefer to come. I don't know which is better, no docs or extra wrong docs. Obviously the best thing would be to have a ubuntustudio-docs package, but that would require upkeep... more than our average :) A script that takes the ubuntu-docs pkg and auto creates a package with just what we need in it would be nice, but I don't know how doable. Perhaps a very minimal ubuntustudio-docs package would work for this, including only those files necessary to launch help, with pointers from the default page to the workflow documentation on the wiki? This would also become a good place for us to document the essential ideas of the workflows and special menus, etc., which might otherwise be confusing for users coming from some backgrounds. Once written, we ought not need to change that much, except where there are signficant changes to the basic environment (e.g. changing default desktop environment), or where there are changes in the underlying software (e.g. new location for default help file): I wouldn't expect this to mean more than one or two changes per cycle, until someone gets sufficiently excited about our documentation to maintain it more closely, with more content, etc. -- Emmet HIKORY -- Ubuntu-Studio-devel mailing list Ubuntu-Studio-devel@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-studio-devel

Yes, but even if you were doing it every six months -- and *especially* if you were doing it every week -- there would be no point in having a Hangout for even half the blueprints. For most of them, the only thing to say would be welp, there's still no-one working on this. (There are often sessions like this at UDS, for example on the Common Printing Dialog, or two-factor authentication.) Instead, have a Hangout only for those features that anyone is actively working on that week. Imagine it like being at UDS: ... No, don't do that. UDS is not a good example of how to get work done. ... Maybe we should schedule a session at next UDS to talk about this? Why wait until then? Why not start now? you are right! I was just thinking that maybe organizing this face-to-face would be easier, but why don't we simply schedule an Hangout session soon and discuss about it? It would be the best way to test if it works :) ... So, here's what I suggest: 1. Choose one of the features you're working on right now. 2. Mail this list to say I'm going to start a weekly Hangout about {feature} next week. If you're interested, reply privately to tell me how you're involved and which UTC hours you'll be available. 3. Web App Integration - Work with Chrome developers
Hi everyone, The work being done to integrate web apps with unity to make them first class citizens is awesome! It seems to me that Ubuntu is the perfect candidate to lead by example here. However, I feel that it would be a very good idea to try and work with the Chrome developers, for example, who are trying to do something similar. Perhaps Canonical can work together with Google to create an API that can become the standard way to integrate with OS services. That way, every one can enjoy these wonderful ideas. We'd just enjoy them a little sooner. ;) Has any Canonical developer attempted to contact the Chrome developers on this point? It seems so much mutual benefit can begot here. Ubuntu+1 inside a sandboxed partition
Hi all, is there a way to run the development Ubuntu version dual boot, but by using the OS installer (and other related stuff) from the stable version so that there is little or no chance of it damaging other partitions with the stable production installation? I'd like to run an Ubuntu+1 version for development and testing purposes. Now, I prefer having a dual boot installation to VMs, because of the ability to test on actual drivers (which are often the cause of why I want to hack something in the first place). After reading the description of this method on the wiki page ( https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UsingDevelopmentReleases/OtherWays) it seems it has a major drawback because a bug inside the installer (or, I guess, parts of the OS related to mounting other partitions etc.) could cause the loss of data on the production installation, which is quite unacceptable even with backups, as it takes a lot of time to recover and get the system back to a usable state (especially if you have other OSs alongside Ubuntu). What I'm wondering is if there is a way to run a development version, but with certain crucial parts that could tamper with other partitions taken from a stable release, where there is a higher level of confidence that it won't cause data loss on other partitions. This would in an essence be a sort of Ubuntu+1 installation sandboxed inside a single partition. If something like this doesn't exist, would it be very complicated to create as, for example, an automatically generated remix? I think it would encourage many people to try out the development version on their own machines, detecting driver-related errors (which get masked by using VMs) much sooner. Also, it would allow developers to run a development version straight on their bare metal production machine, which would be a performance boost during their work. Don't know if this meets your requirements exactly, but it's certainly possible to do this manually. Split your drive into multiple partitions. Use one for /boot that will be shared across all installs. Create a partition for each Ubuntu version. Then copy a relevant menu entry from /boot/grub/grub.cnf to /etc/grub.d/40_custom, modified to set the root= param for each to point to the two partitions, and re-run update-grub. There's probably half a dozen other ways of doing it... Dražen Lučanin One way to do it is with LXC containers. Your host is running 12.04 LTS, yet you have containers for Quantal. These have isolated networking / chroot, but they don't run their own kernel. It's faster than virtualisation and a very lightweight, yet secure solution. Maintaining responsiveness using cgroups
I've been using gnu/linux as my main daily work system for about 12 years, and been using Ubuntu since Feisty (2007?). Some of my games have even made it into the repository. Ubuntu's great stuff. Every once in a while, in my work, or due to a leak/bug in some application (e.g., Firefox), one process will start allocating an unexpected amount of memory. For example, if I try to process too big of an image by accident with ImageMagick. As the process demands more memory, the kernel tries to provide it. Other processes, including system critical ones, get swapped out. This renders the system almost completely unresponsive. Of course, as the user, you realize what's going on and try to kill the process. But sometimes, when Xorg gets swapped out, and your terminal shell gets swapped out, and the mouse stutters... well, you can't really do anything. Sometimes, if it gets really bad (like two processes in a swap war), even virtual terminals (cntrl-alt-F4, e.g.) can't properly log in. Some keyboards (like mine!) don't have a SysRq key. Sometime, hitting the power button is the only solution. Obviously, this is user or programmer error. Tons of people online claim this is normal behavior. But consider the end-user experience---frustrating even for the power-user. Yes, this happens on OSX and Windows sometimes too, but... you know, Linux can do better than that! It should be rock solid no matter what your processes do. If you look at how the kernel handles CPU hogging processes, it hardly affects the system responsiveness at all (great!). But when it comes to RAM-hogging processes, the kernel allows one process to dominate, by default. And /etc/security/limits.conf has been de-toothed since 2.4.30 to ignore the rss limit that could help with this problem (and limits.conf ships with all limits off by default anyway). Enter the new (as of 2.6.24) kernel feature: cgroups Here, we can set a hard RSS limit for all processes of a given user, or even group of users. A limit on the total. Which is actually what we want, and better than a per-process limit. If a user spawns several memory-hungry processes at the same time, a per-process limit would still allow Xorg to get swapped out. But a group limit can ensure there's always some physical RAM left for critical (root-owned) processes. I've tried cgroups on my system (basically setting a limit for myself that is a portion of my physical RAM, leaving enough RAM for system critical processes always). And the results are DRAMATIC. No matter what I do, the system never becomes unresponsive now. Even in the biggest swap war between MY processes, I can still switch virtual desktops instantly, switch windows, kill a process, etc. After 12 years of suffering from this occasional (and pretty much only) instability of Linux, I think I've finally fixed it. Of course, I had to install libcgroup1 and cgroup-bin, which weren't there by default. And I had to study the (extremely complicated) cgroup documentation to get this setup for myself. Unlikely that most users are going to go out of their way to set this up. FINALLY, after all that background, here's my suggestion: Why isn't this the DEFAULT configuration for desktop users? Set some fraction of physical RAM aside for system-critical processes, and then give the users the rest with a cgroup. Then, the user's system would never become unresponsive due to user error. And I can't think of a situation when you'd really WANT to have all physical RAM devoted to a user process at the expense of system-critical processes. At least not in a desktop environment. You know, the default Ubuntu behavior is not to dump core files (so as not to waste disk space of unsuspecting users). I think all non-root user processes should be in a RAM-limited cgroup as default Ubuntu behavior (so as to never cause unsuspecting users to reach for the power button as a last resort). Thoughts? And pasted below is a description of what I did (on my 512MB system). Simple, assuming you can figure out how to do it. Thanks for your time, Jason $ sudo apt-get install libcgroup1 cgroup-bin Then, edit /etc/cgconf.conf to add a new control group: group regularUsers { memory { memory.limit_in_bytes = 256M; } } Then, edit /etc/cgrules.conf to add a given user to the regularUsers group: jasonrohrermemory regularUsers/ Finally, restart cgroups (or reboot): $ sudo service cgconfig restart $ sudo service cgred restart -- ubuntu-devel mailing list ubuntu-devel@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-devel

So I often make a new cgroup with say 2G ram, 4 cpus, and a freezer so I can quickly pause what it is doing if I need to. Unfortunately the idea of automatically moving tasks into cgroups as they are started doesn't quite work. It would need to have some more kernel help in order to do that reliably. The newest Debian package actually (temporarily) removes the starting of libcgroup daemons (by default) at boot. However, the intent is to reintroduce at least the configurable setup of the cgroups at boot, and that combined with pam_cgroup should help to do what you like. Re: Ubuntu+1 inside a sandboxed partition
I'll toss my 2 cents in here as well. Part of testing is to test out the installer. However, if your afraid of losing data (and you should have a plan!), one trick I like to use is to simply crack open my case and disconnect the hard drive(s) containing my crucial data. Boom, problem solved. No way is the installer going to nuke me now :-) If you only have one disk, then this isn't an option for you. But I like to have separate physical disks for testing for this reason. For example, if I had a two disk setup I would do this: Disk 1: Partition into as many slots as you'd like, using any partition on the disk as the root filesystem Ubuntu 10.04|Ubuntu12.04|Ubuntu12.10 Disk 2: your home folder.. the entire disk, one partition, guard with your life and have backups :-) Now when installing, disconnect disk 2. Do whatever you'd like on disk 1, and if for some reason the installer wipes the disk and kills my ubuntu 10.04 and ubuntu 12.04 partitions, I can report the bug and not lose any sleep over it. Re-installing takes 20 mins. Re-attach my home drive to it and re-sync my installed packages and I'm back in business. Naturally after installing, you could decide if you wanted to mount disk 2 as /home on any of the root filesystems.. it would be your choice :-) Thanks, Nicholas P.S. Ohh, btw, this applies to the stable releases too :-) Things can, will and do break at any time. If your messing with a disk that has important data (aka partitioning, installing grub, installing an OS), you better have a impenetrable backup. Re: Ubuntu Studio precise pangolin 12.04.1 RCs on ISO tracker
Hi guys. We really need some assistance in testing for the Ubuntu Studio 12.04.1 RC images. I saw in the ISO QA Tracker [0] today and I found that only me and len-ovenwerks (len-dt on Freenode) have tested the Ubuntu Studio images till today. This is not enough to build a strong report. We need more people to ensure the build is bug-free before we release it on 23/8/2013. :) If you do have time, please help to test the ISO images before releasing in Thursday. Report your results in the ISO QA Tracker. We don't enforce you to help, but by testing it you would have helped the Ubuntu Studio team an awful lot. [Ubuntu-be] materriaal Antwerpen
Alvast bedankt! [ubuntu-mythtv] Mythbuntu theme discussion information
As most of you have probably noticed, there have been some recent updates to the Mythbuntu theme in both 0.25 and 0.26. As I've recently taken over developing the theme and been receiving patches from people, I wanted to put a reminder out where things needed to go. Bugs - Theme bugs can be discussed here, although I'd much rather have the discussion in a bug report on Launchpad (https://bugs.launchpad.net/mythbuntu/+filebug). One thing is for certain, the bug will NOT get fixed without a Launchpad bug report, so file a bug report. New/Changed Functionality - Up to this point, I've applied all patches locally, tested, and as long as it worked and I wasn't completely against it I committed it to github. I'm going to start being a little more picky in patch acceptance for new features/changed functionality. If you submit a patch that changes functionality or adds new features, it should probably be attached to a mailing list thread here. The Mythbuntu team reserves the right to commit patches we see as a good change with little or no discussion (eg. if we see a patch on the list and it makes sense we'll probably just add it, no need for a bunch of red tape) Patches - It's easiest for me to take merge requests on github, however I'll take patches here as well (or attached to bug reports on Launchpad). A patch should only change 1 portion of the theme (eg. changes to the OSD and video menus shouldn't be in the same patch). If there is a good reason that multiple things are getting changed in a single patch, I'll might accept it, but it should be a good reason. Patches also need to come with some description of what was changed. An example of a good way to list what is changing in a patch is below. recordings-ui.xml * Use brightness to clearly tell the user where current focus is. * Related to the above, actually make the cursor work like a cursor! No more leaving a copy behind in the left pane while browsing on the right. (Brightness is used to still indicate the active entry in the unfocused pane.) * Remove scrolling from category display (last holdout of the brief scrolling experiment). Instead use multiline and a smaller font to hopefully gracefully display categories no matter how (reasonably) long they might be or what language they are in. [ubuntu-mythtv] Change Right/Left menu behavior?
Per my previous email, I've added this for discussion (it was sent to me in a private email). I noticed after migrating to 0.25 (I tend to keep my MythTV setups stable for long periods) from 0.24 that the Mythbuntu theme was hardwired to interpret RIGHT as Menu and LEFT as escape, à la the way all themes behaved pre-0.22. Given that the great RIGHT/MENU controversy of 2009 is long past us--with only one MENU button now needed and horizontal themes common--I'd prefer to revert the theme to the 0.22-0.24 behavior of having LEFT and RIGHT wrap and relying on the existing MENU and ESCAPE bindings. Was there a reason for the change? Do you feel strongly about it on eway or another? Was there a reason for the change? Do you feel strongly about it on eway or another? Being relatively new to MythTV (started in December of 2010) I am not familiar with the great 2009 controversy, nor do I understand what the post is talking about regarding the change. Unless the change was implemented in the most recent update that Thomas committed to the theme, mine is still working the same as it always has, with the right arrow perorming a select of the item highlighted (for example in the Watch Recordings screen it moves from the selected category into the episodes list to the right). I like the way that works now, and would be opposed to changing that, but I am not sure if that is relevant to the posters question. Can someone please clarify? Jeremy -- Ubuntu-mythtv mailing list Ubuntu-mythtv@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-mythtv Rather than hitting right to decend into the menus and left to ascend back to the top, I believe themes generally require hitting OK to decend and BACK to ascend in the menus. The default behavior for all themes prior to 0.22 is what you see now in the Mythbuntu theme. This default behavior had to change in 0.22 because in 0.22 themes are now allowed to have horizontal menus (example http://www.mythtv.org/w/images/7/71/Terra_menu3.png). If you open the theme chooser and download another theme (IIRC, steppes) you should see this behavior of having to hit OK rather than RIGHT to decend into a menu. Thanks, Thomas Mashos So the post was asking about changing the MythBuntu Theme to match the operation of a horizontal theme? Why would that be needed? What functionality would be gained by doing that? It seemed to be a post asking why a change was done when I read it, but based on your description the MythBuntu Theme is the same as all themes were prior to 0.22, right? I for one like it the way it is. I would have a lot of complaints in my house if the right arrow suddenly didn't move the cursor over into the episodes pane on the watch recordings screen. I understand the necessity of a horizontal theme, but I don't understand why we would change one that does not necessitate that. Jeremy -- Ubuntu-mythtv mailing list Ubuntu-mythtv@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-mythtv Not exactly. The post was about changing menu navigation to work like all the other vertical themes, which currently use the default of OK/ESCAPE rather than RIGHT/LEFT. Currently (AFAIK) we differ in how navigation is handled in our theme (RIGHT/LEFT) from all other themes out there (OK/ESCAPE). Functionality wise I don't think we gain anything from doing it other than consistency for people going from one vertical theme to another. I'll let everyone else weigh in on their thoughts before I say which way I prefer. [Bug 1006293] Re: exiqgrep fails to parse output of exim4 -bp if the mail message is less than 1k
Is there any chance of this being fixed via StableReleaseUpdates ( https://wiki.ubuntu.com/StableReleaseUpdates ) ? Or perhaps it would be better to request a backport for it? On a busy production Exim4 server, there will almost allways be an email in queue, with a size less than 1K. This makes exiqgrep not work, which again makes monitoring with munin not work. [Bug 1039420] [NEW] NTP security vulnerability because not using authentication by default
*** This bug is a security vulnerability *** Public security bug reported: Ubuntu implements so much security one way or another. So much defenses against network level man in the middle or malicious proxies or wifi hotspots. Cryptographic verification generally works well but there is one big drawback: it requires correct date/time. NTP in Ubuntu does not use any authentication by default, although it is supported by NTP. I conclude, that almost no one is using authenticated NTP, because there are no instructions in a forum or blog how to enable NTP authentication. Therefore almost everyone uses standard configuration and is at risk. An adversary can tamper with the unauthenticated NTP replies and put the users time several years back, especially, but not limited, if the bios battery or hardware clock is defect. That issue becomes more relevant with new devices like RP, which do not even have a hardware clock. Putting the clock several years back allows an adversary to use already revoked, broken, expired certificates; replay old, broken, outdated, known vulnerable updates etc. ** Affects: ntp (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Visibility changed to: Public -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Server Team, which is subscribed to ntp in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1039420 Title: NTP security vulnerability because not using authentication by default To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ntp/+bug/1039420/+subscriptions -- Ubuntu-server-bugs mailing list Ubuntu-server-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-server-bugs
