[Bug 152027] Re: rt2500 network no start
I had a similar problem here, using the default rt2500pci driver. I found that my Belkin RT2500-based PCI card would not see or connect to any wireless points unless I pulled out my wired Ethernet card (leaving the wireless as the only network interface). After this, NetworkManager would be able to see and connect to networks, but I could not successfully configure a wireless network manually. The solution is to configure /etc/network/interfaces with the following: auto wlan0 iface wlan0 inet dhcp pre-up ifconfig wlan0 down wpa-driver wext wpa-key-mgmt WPA-PSK wpa-proto WPA wpa-ssid ssid wpa-psk passphrase pre-up sleep 20 pre-up ifconfig wlan0 up Note that the passphrase is stored in clear text, which is a potential security problem. Also, moving between a NetworkManager-managed connection to a manually-defined one requires a reboot. ** Changed in: linux-ubuntu-modules-2.6.22 (Ubuntu) Sourcepackagename: None = linux-ubuntu-modules-2.6.22 -- rt2500 network no start https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/152027 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 48418] Re: Support for uid and gid mount options for CIFS
The man page says that uid= and gid= are ignored by the cifs driver when connecting to a server that supports unix permissions. When you were testing, were you connecting to a windows or a *nix box? In my testing, I was trying to connect to a server running feisty, which does support the permissions and hence would ignore the uid= and gid= options. However, this is suboptimal and has caused much grief amongst users. Also, if it's of any use, I've tried running the server as both security=user and security=share. There's no difference. It adds confusion where there needn't be any. A meta-contact is still just a contact, you've just added more information about them than a regular contact. But they are different. To take Kopete, for instance, there are Contacts, Sub-contacts and Meta-contacts. A Contact is a name entry, which may have multiple Sub-contacts within it to represent each of that person's accounts on different networks (or multiple accounts on the same network). A Meta-contact is an entry in Kaddressbook that you associate the Contact with. In other words, Contacts and Sub-contacts are known only to Kopete, but Meta-contacts are KDE-wide (i.e. Kaddressbook entries). To complicate matters, entries in Kaddressbook are known as Contacts instead of Meta-contacts. Isn't 'buddy' just a colloquialism for 'friend'? In that case, your reservation applies equally to both terms. As an Australian, I have no problems with using 'mate', particularly in a casual sense. It doesn't necessarily translate well to other Commonwealth variants of English, though. At the end of the day, all such words have a similar meaning. That is, unless you deliberately select a more formal and neutral word like 'contact'. Kopete seems to use 'contact' for singular entries and 'meta contact' for an entry that includes multiple contacts (e.g. IM, e-mail, Web, phone, fax). However, Kaddressbook (which is used by Kontact) calls the meta contacts as 'contacts'. Note that a change in such nomenclature needs to be made consistent throughout all similar (e.g. gaim/pidgin, kopete) and related (e.g. evolution, kontact) applications. I had never in the past noticed the aforementioned inconsistency in KDE, but it is something that we need to be wary of. One thing we did agree upon after making this change is that we need better communication with upstream projects, and we have been forging closer relationships with groups like GNOME-UK and KDE-En-GB. The main way in which we differ is that we are at present a Commonwealth translation project, and are not strictly British. This is part of a longer-term plan to eventually have regional variations[2]. There is some inconsistency amongst KDE, GNOME and other projects, so the notion that we altered a single en_GB standard is a fallacy. KDE uses 'wastebin', GNOME uses 'wastebasket', and some applications use 'deleted items'. Instead of creating yet another standard, we chose to adopt an existing one. Ideally, projects upstream should agree upon a single title. In the meanwhile we should provide a degree of consistency with what we already have, rather than inventing something entirely new. The supposed desktop metaphor is a weak one these days. Software is not restricted to the limited capabilities of an office desk. Users are aware of what it means to 'delete' a file, and most people don't talk about placing a digital file in a rubbish receptacle. Issues such as these, amongst many others, were raised in the discussion on the ubuntu-l10n-eng mailing list. Note once again that I have closed this report. It was a conscious decision and is not a bug. [Ubuntu-l10n-eng] xfce-mcs-plugins and other GTK+ packages
For some reason, certain GTK+ packages such as xfce-mcs-plugins have strings like Button Label|Display. This is an error which will be displayed verbatim in the application(s) concerned. The solution is to remove the prefix Button Label| from your translated version. I have filed this as a bug: https://launchpad.net/distros/ubuntu/+source/xfce-mcs-plugins/+bug/75351 -- The less I have to do with customers, the better. I've always felt that the biggest contribution the commercial vendors do is exactly the fact that they end up being the interface between customers and developers, and that they also thus end up being the balance between purely technical issues and the purely marketing thing. And open source keeps them (and the developers, for that matter) honest. - Linus Torvalds, 21 December 2004 pgpvF4VnGZ7Je.pgp Description: PGP signature -- Ubuntu-l10n-eng mailing list Ubuntu-l10n-eng@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-l10n-eng https://wiki.ubuntu.com/EnglishTranslation

[Bug 75351] Re: Incorrect text strings
Shouldn't Rosetta indicate that the Button Label part should not be translated? I have seen the same problem in both en_gb and en_au, where translators maintain the Button Label part, only to see it appear in their applications. There is nothing wrong with what they did - they just translated the string as they would any other. However, Rosetta should be clever enough to warn them about it, or better yet not expose the Button Label part of the string. ** Also affects: rosetta (upstream) Importance: Undecided Status: Unconfirmed -- Incorrect text strings https://launchpad.net/bugs/75351 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Tom and Joachim, Your comments are all valid, and they were raised several months ago on the mailing list, along with many other points which you are likely unaware of.
