[Bug 157013] Re: Amarok resume playback feature doesn't work as expected

2007-12-04 Thread Sridhar Dhanapalan
** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: amarok

Amarok has an option titled Resume playback on start. I would assume

My interface numbering problem was due to Bug #151786. If we can solve
that bug, the number of people affected by this bug would decrease. At
any rate, an installation script should not assume that a particular
interface name exists.

[Bug 161938] Firefox garbles some syndication feed URLs

2007-11-10 Thread Sridhar Dhanapalan
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: firefox

On Web sites that have a syndication feed available, Firefox displays a
button on the right side of the location bar. When clicked, it is
supposed to load the feed , and provide an option to subscribe to it.

On some sites, Firefox garbles the URL for the feed, resulting in an
error. For example,

1. Go to http://www.explosm.net/
2. Click on the 'Subscribe to this page' button in the location bar
3. Firefox tries to take you to an invalid address:
feed://http//feeds.feedburner.com/Explosm

A look at the site's code shows that it is pointing to the right place:

  link rel=alternate type=application/rss+xml title=Explosm
Feedburner RSS Feed href=http://feeds.feedburner.com/Explosm; /

So it appears that Firefox is mangling the URL to the feed.

[Bug 156671] Re: KDM can't start, gives a sed error

I've tracked it down to the way /etc/init.d/kdm parses

[Bug 129910] Re: tty[1-6] are active but display nothing in Gutsy

2007-11-01 Thread Sridhar Dhanapalan
Sridhar Dhanapalan wrote:
The solution outlined in fanatic's last post has made my console visible.
I didn't have to use any vga settings in grub.

I should add that this has seemingly messed up my bootsplash. It is
now of a lower resolution, and is offset to the right to the point where
half of it is on the right edge of the screen and the rest is wrapped
around onto the left. I've experimented with a few different resolutions
in /etc/usplash.conf but there's been no change.

Correcting these comments, I _was_ using a vga= parameter in grub (I
didn't notice it before), and the usplash problem was fixed by setting
usplash.conf to 1024x768.

So the solution for me was to load the fbcon, vesafb and vga16fb modules
into the initramfs and remove their blacklisting.

[Bug 152666] Re: new firefox profile doesn't display if default profile is open

2007-10-28 Thread Sridhar Dhanapalan
The '-no-remote' option is hidden and doesn't even show up with 'firefox
--help'. Either we should make it more obvious that '-no-remote' is
needed when using multiple profiles at once, or Firefox should be
'fixed' so that this flag isn't necessary.

At the moment, people who used multiple profiles in Feisty will see this
functionality break after upgrading to Gutsy, with no easy way to
discover what went wrong and how to mend it.

[Bug 157011] Printing fails to printers with names containing brackets

2007-10-25 Thread Sridhar Dhanapalan
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: cupsys

I've got an Ubuntu Feisty server running cups with printers named
Brother_HL-730 and Brother_HL-730_(test). I've configured both
identically, so that the only difference is their name (they both print
to the same physical printer, using the hl7x0 driver, and I've checked
the config files). Printing to Brother_HL-730 works well. When I print
to Brother_HL-730_(test) I get one page with a couple of lines of
postscript code at the top and then a continuous stream of blank pages.
To recover, I have to turn the printer off, cancel the job and then kill
the printing processes on the server.

Renaming Brother_HL-730_(test) to Brother_HL-730_test (i.e. removing the
brackets) solves the problem.

This problem exists on both Dapper and Feisty. My server doesn't run
Gutsy, so I don't know if it is affected.

successfully configure a wireless network manually. The solution is to
configure /etc/network/interfaces with the following:

auto wlan0
iface wlan0 inet dhcp
pre-up ifconfig wlan0 down
wpa-driver wext
wpa-key-mgmt WPA-PSK
wpa-proto WPA
wpa-ssid ssid
wpa-psk passphrase
pre-up sleep 20
pre-up ifconfig wlan0 up

Note that the passphrase is stored in clear text, which is a potential
security problem. Also, moving between a NetworkManager-managed
connection to a manually-defined one requires a reboot.

Re: [ubuntu-marketing] Ubuntu Screencasts

2007-10-11 Thread Sridhar Dhanapalan
I just like to exclaim how useful the screencasts from the Screencasts Team
have been.

At Software Freedom Day, we (the Sydney, Australia team) had screencasts
running all day in a continuous loop. The high quality of the video meant
that we could use a reasonably large display, and the subtitles meant that
visitors could follow the action despite the noisy computer fair that we were
in. Being able to actually show people how tasks are performed saved us a lot
of repetitive explaining and made the message resonate so much better.

Hats off to the Screencasts Team!

[Bug 149360] apt-build package configuration fails due to missing sources.list

2007-10-05 Thread Sridhar Dhanapalan
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: apt-build

When installing/configuring apt-build, I am asked if a modification can
be made to my apt sources. I don't have a /etc/apt/sources.list file,
instead using files in /etc/sources.list.d. This causes the apt-build
installation to fail. Adding a /etc/apt/sources.list file makes the
problem go away, but the package should not assume that this file
exists.

[Bug 144176] Realplayer error: Cannot open the audio device

[Bug 106146] Re: Cannot mount cifs shares as normal user

2007-08-07 Thread Sridhar Dhanapalan
IMHO the Debian bug report was prematurely closed. Cifs should be able
to be mounted just like any other FS. So if I have a cifs entry in fstab
with the option 'users', I should be able to mount/umount as a normal
user, regardless of who owns the mount point. That is how it works with
other filesystems, so why should it be any different for cifs?

[Bug 48418] Re: Support for uid and gid mount options for CIFS

2007-08-05 Thread Sridhar Dhanapalan
The man page says that uid= and gid= are ignored by the cifs driver when
connecting to a server that supports unix permissions. When you were
testing, were you connecting to a windows or a *nix box? In my testing,
I was trying to connect to a server running feisty, which does support
the permissions and hence would ignore the uid= and gid= options.
However, this is suboptimal and has caused much grief amongst users.

Also, if it's of any use, I've tried running the server as both
security=user and security=share. There's no difference.

Thanks for your help :)

 there needn't be any. A meta-contact is still just a contact, you've
just added more information about them than a regular contact.

But they are different. To take Kopete, for instance, there are Contacts,
Sub-contacts and Meta-contacts. A Contact is a name entry, which may have
multiple Sub-contacts within it to represent each of that person's accounts
on different networks (or multiple accounts on the same network). A
Meta-contact is an entry in Kaddressbook that you associate the Contact with.

In other words, Contacts and Sub-contacts are known only to Kopete, but
Meta-contacts are KDE-wide (i.e. Kaddressbook entries). To complicate
matters, entries in Kaddressbook are known as Contacts instead of
Meta-contacts. Hardly consistent :(

I don't know how the GNOME/GTK+ applications integrate in this department, but
these are the kinds of considerations that we need to make before altering
any terminology.

weighted word; not everyone on my buddy list is my friend.

Isn't 'buddy' just a colloquialism for 'friend'? In that case, your
reservation applies equally to both terms.

As an Australian, I have no problems with using 'mate', particularly in a
casual sense. It doesn't necessarily translate well to other Commonwealth
variants of English, though.

At the end of the day, all such words have a similar meaning. That is, unless
you deliberately select a more formal and neutral word like 'contact'. Kopete
seems to use 'contact' for singular entries and 'meta contact' for an entry
that includes multiple contacts (e.g. IM, e-mail, Web, phone, fax). However,
Kaddressbook (which is used by Kontact) calls the meta contacts
as 'contacts'.

Note that a change in such nomenclature needs to be made consistent throughout
all similar (e.g. gaim/pidgin, kopete) and related (e.g. evolution, kontact)
applications. I had never in the past noticed the aforementioned
inconsistency in KDE, but it is something that we need to be wary of. I would
think it better to bring up the issue with the KDE and GNOME en-GB teams
(i.e. upstream) before changing anything in Ubuntu.

[Bug 114600] 'Forwarded Message' headers are not added to forwarded inline messages

I have the same problem: my cifs entries in /etc/fstab aren't mounted at
boot. This problem has existed in Dapper for about two weeks, and is
still present after upgrading to Edgy yesterday. A workaround is to add
the line 'mount -a' to /etc/rc.local

[Bug 77650] nfs kioslave memory leak

2007-01-03 Thread Sridhar Dhanapalan
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: kdebase-kio-plugins

Accessing a directory of 305 files (10GB total) via the nfs kioslave
creates a memory leak. Within a couple of minutes, my RAM (I have 1GB)
is exhausted and my system no longer responds. The spinner in Konqueror
is animated as if it is trying to fetch the list of files, but nothing
is shown. I do not have file previews turned on for Internet protocols.

This problem does not occur if the nfs share is mounted via the command
line (e.g. via /etc/fstab).

2007-01-03 Thread Sridhar Dhanapalan
A workaround is to add the line

  invoke-rc.d kdm restart

to /etc/rc.local

Also, it's important to make sure that KDM is set as the default display
manager:

  $ sudo dpkg-reconfigure kdm

The resulting startup behaviour is that X tries to load from usplash,
somehow fails and returns to a console, then immediately tries again,
bringing up kdm. The appearance is not any different from how gdm (with
no additional configuration) starts on my machine.

I've made my point as clearly as I can: Deleted items causes the Trash

I don't see what reasons can trump that.

If you don't read the list, how can you expect to be informed of the

changes should not be decided upon unilaterally.

The majority of the Team members taking part in the discussion had
already voted in favour of the change. Also, sample size is not
everything. The Team members were actively (or at least passively)
taking part in the discussion, and hence were aware of all of the issues
involved and also of the mission of the Ubuntu-l10n-En-GB effort. Also,
most Team members have been tested for their knowledge and skill in the
language and have agreed with the principles of the project. Whether
this outweighs the votes of an uninformed crowd is another matter, and
I'll leave that decision up to you.

One thing we did agree upon after making this change is that we need
better communication with upstream projects, and we have been forging
closer relationships with groups like GNOME-UK and KDE-En-GB. The main
way in which we differ is that we are at present a Commonwealth
translation project, and are not strictly British. This is part of a
longer-term plan to eventually have regional variations[2].

There is some inconsistency amongst KDE, GNOME and other projects, so
the notion that we altered a single en_GB standard is a fallacy. KDE
uses 'wastebin', GNOME uses 'wastebasket', and some applications use
'deleted items'. Instead of creating yet another standard, we chose to
adopt an existing one. Ideally, projects upstream should agree upon a
single title. In the meanwhile we should provide a degree of consistency
with what we already have, rather than inventing something entirely new.

The supposed desktop metaphor is a weak one these days. Software is not
restricted to the limited capabilities of an office desk. Users are
aware of what it means to 'delete' a file, and most people don't talk
about placing a digital file in a rubbish receptacle.

Issues such as these, amongst many others, were raised in the discussion
on the ubuntu-l10n-eng mailing list.

Note once again that I have closed this report. It was a conscious
decision and is not a bug.

[Ubuntu-l10n-eng] xfce-mcs-plugins and other GTK+ packages

2006-12-11 Thread Sridhar Dhanapalan
For some reason, certain GTK+ packages such as xfce-mcs-plugins have strings
like Button Label|Display. This is an error which will be displayed
verbatim in the application(s) concerned. The solution is to remove the
prefix Button Label| from your translated version.

I have filed this as a bug:

biggest contribution the commercial vendors do is exactly the fact that they
end up being the interface between customers and developers, and that they
also thus end up being the balance between purely technical issues and the
purely marketing thing. And open source keeps them (and the developers, for
that matter) honest. - Linus Torvalds, 21 December 2004

The reason for doing this is explained in the gettext manual:

 http://www.gnu.org/software/gettext/manual/html_chapter/gettext_10.html#SEC

That's fine, but IMHO Rosetta should be smart enough to know this and not
present an opportunity for end users to see Button Label|string strings
all over their applications. Translators should not have to think about these
things.

[Bug 75351] Re: Incorrect text strings

2006-12-11 Thread Sridhar Dhanapalan
Shouldn't Rosetta indicate that the Button Label part should not be
translated? I have seen the same problem in both en_gb and en_au, where
translators maintain the Button Label part, only to see it appear in
their applications. There is nothing wrong with what they did - they
just translated the string as they would any other. However, Rosetta
should be clever enough to warn them about it, or better yet not expose
the Button Label part of the string.

In Feisty Fawn if you disable the right mouse click menu then right

I had a similar problem here. The only mono app that was running that I
knew of was Beagle, and I was not actively using it.

[Bug 70687] Re: both button and tap-to-click cease working intermittently on touchpad

2006-11-12 Thread Sridhar Dhanapalan
I can confirm this on the same laptop (brand new Dell Inspiron 9400). I
have noticed the keyboard itself dying sometimes as well. This only
occurs with 64-bit Edgy. 32-Bit Edgy works beautifully.
