[Bug 1763594] Re: xhci hangs; reset results in NULL pointer dereference

2019-01-11 Thread Shirish S
Kai-Heng,

Am able to see "xHCI host controller not responding, assume dead" pretty
much regularly during suspend/resume.

I verified that the kernel am using has patches mentioned in
https://patchwork.ozlabs.org/project/ubuntu-kernel/list/?series=53395
and am using amd platform.

I also have iommu disabled. Impact being system hangs for a while,
watchdog kicks in and reboot.

[Bug 1526608] Re: can't install with hfs+ /boot partition

2015-12-22 Thread shirish
This is resolved by taking back up of the contents of /boot/efi partition and
reformatting it by making it read write.
May be this is a work around but it is resolved for now. Thanks for all your
time.

[Bug 1526608] Re: package grub-efi-amd64 2.02~beta2-9ubuntu1.6 failed to install/upgrade: subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 1 - on macbook pro

2015-12-18 Thread shirish
Not intentionally. The efi partition has to be HFS+ for ubuntu to get
installed on my mac book. If there is way to reformat the partition to
R/W I can do that, I am unaware of how to properly back up the /boot/efi
so that my system won't become unusable.

Could it be because the /boot/efi is HFS+ formatted and mounted as read
only ? I tried re doing the same thing but there is no mention of grub-
efi in syslog. If it is because of HFS+ formatting is there any work
around to get this working ?

[Bug 314506]

2012-01-24 Thread Shirish Agarwal
Hi all,
I am on Debian sid now and this issue is still there.

Error: Illegal entry in bfchar block in ToUnicode CMap

It does not matter what app I use get the same issue.

$ epdfview cellit.pdf
Error: Illegal entry in bfchar block in ToUnicode CMap

$ xpdf cellit.pdf
Error: Illegal entry in bfchar block in ToUnicode CMap

and it takes quite a bit of time to open up (more than a minute) the
file. This is on Pentium Dual-core. The error comes out multiple times.

One can find the pdf I was opening at
http://cellit.co.in/ui_images/magazines/pdf/Magazine-1-2012-33.pdf . I
just renamed it to cellit so I remember.

I have faced hang problem many times in couple of days.

Mainly I was running Transmission and VLC player. When I remove power

Something should be wrong somewhere, as bugs are no magic thing.

Re: [ubuntu-in] Experimental debdelta repository

2009-11-07 Thread shirish शिरीष
in-line :-

On Tue, Sep 15, 2009 at 06:59, Onkar Shinde onkarshi...@gmail.com wrote:
 Hi all,

I have setup a experimental debdelta repository for packages in
jaunty-security on our website hosting ubuntu-in.info. I will try to
explain what this means and how can users benefit.

 What is debdelta:
Debdelta is a program that generates delta (difference) between two
.deb files. This delta can be used to generate new version of a
package if you already have old version with you. Actual generation of
delta is done with help of utilities such as xdelta, bsdiff.

 What are benefits:
Some of the packages in Ubuntu get regular security/bugfixes updates
ex. firefox. Every time a security/bugfix is released user has to
re-download the .deb files corresponding to latest version. This
causes lot of download and considering that most users have limited
bandwidth this is one of the main reason why users are reluctant to
 install updates.
With help of debdelta, if you have installed update for a package
(let's say firefox) and if the .deb file is present on the machine (by
default in /var/cache/apt/archive), next time a update is released for
same package user will just need to download the delta and new package
can be created locally. This usually reduces the download required by
 50%-80%.

 How to use it.
As of now if you wish to use the debdelta repository you will have to
 follow these steps.
 1. Install debdelta package using your favorite package manager.
 2. Edit /etc/debdelta/sources.conf file. Set value for 'Origin' and
'Label' to Ubuntu. Change delta_uri to http://ubuntu-in.info/ubuntu/
A sample file is available at - http://paste.ubuntu.com/271384/
 3. For downloading the upgrades run commands in following sequence.
 sudo apt-get update
 sudo apt-get debdelta-upgrade
 sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

I tried the following things :-

a. I installed debdelta
b. Software sources were made to http://ftp.iitm.ac.in/ubuntu
c. Edited the /etc/debdelta/sources.conf to same as given in the sample file.
d. ran sudo apt-get update
e. ran sudo apt-get debdelta-upgrade

It says E: Invalid operation debdelta-upgrade

Any ideas where I have gone wrong ?

 Limitations
 1. Currently the repository contains debdelta only for packages in
jaunty-security from 'main' component for i386. This is because of
 limited disk space.

This is the reason perhaps why I got 404 on some of the updates

Err http://ftp.iitm.ac.in karmic/main Sources
  404 Not Found
Err http://ftp.iitm.ac.in karmic/restricted Sources
  404 Not Found
Err http://ftp.iitm.ac.in karmic/universe Sources

Err http://ftp.iitm.ac.in karmic-security/universe Sources
  404 Not Found
Err http://ftp.iitm.ac.in karmic-security/multiverse Sources
  404 Not Found

I do see there are other updates as well.

 2. Since debdelta is created only when more then one versions of a
package are available in the repository, our repository contains very
few of them. As of today it contains debdelta corresponding to latest
update of openssl package. More debdeltas will get accumulated in the
repository as more security updates are released.

 The road ahead:
If use of debdeltas proves beneficial we can suggest the same to
admins at IITM for the semi-official Ubuntu repository. This will save
lot of bandwidth for everyone in the long run.

[Bug 287596] Re: cannot get connectivity using /etc/network/interfaces

2009-11-07 Thread Shirish Agarwal
Hi Alex,
I still had to run around to get this fixed in karmic. It is fixed for now but
don't know whether it will remain the same on next boot or not.

I had to do the following.

Right-click on Network Manager
Edit Connections
In Auto eth1
in IPv4 Settings
Change Method to Automatic (DHCP) addresses only
in DNS servers change from blank to 208.67.222.222
in Search domains change to opendns.com

I want to add another DNS server IP Address, how can I do that ?

Please lemme know if you require any other attachments.

The problem is that for creating debdelta I first need to do rsync
with main mirror and then create a debdelta. As I mentioned in my
email, the limitation is disk space on our hosting site. Give me
enough disk space and I will create repository for karmic, for amd64,
 jaunty-updates etc.

I am not involved with any effort mentioned by you. I discovered
debdelta about two months back. And I setup this repository just as
experiment. It turned easier to do than expected.

Hi Onkar,
How did I miss this thread. Great work there. I would have
appreciated if people would have added their experiences with using
the updates from the debdelta repository.

What Vishal is/was talking about is the discussion he did about a
month back on ubuntu-devel-discuss

https://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/ubuntu-devel-discuss/2009-August/009201.html

I had discovered debdeltas way before but don't/didn't know if it can be used.

http://flossexperiences.wordpress.com/2008/12/19/better-package-management/

 Onkar

You need to publicize it more. If you want I can point it out on my
blog as well. The only thing is I don't know if your mirror can take
any pressure or not. Also don't know if people are using 8.10 or not.

Slightly OT to the thread here but has anybody wondered why usually
the odd named releases are much better than the even numbered
releases. Is it because just like the Indian team which can't take
pressure in big matches, something similar plays in the mind of
software developers in even numbered releases as well.

I am thinking/talking about specifically about audio and video drivers
and generally the quality of the release.

Hi Hardik,
nice review although there are few things I would like to point out :-

1. The .png screenshots you have taken are not too detailed. They
infact feel fudgy. See if you could take the screenshots and save them
as .svg so your users can look in better detail.

2. You showed that there may be differences in the configuration
files. Few releases back when I looked it used to give something like
this :-

++ @@ this is the changed line
- - this is the original line

or something similar. Basically doing a diff between two files. Now
what I had been looking for if they had made something similar to
notepad++ compare plugin . That would have been cool.

3. You mentioned about Reliance Netconnect broadband as one of the
providers in the 3g drop-down list but no screenshot of that. Very
disappointing.

Awaiting your reply for the above.

Integrating release schedules into google calendar (.ics)

2009-09-27 Thread shirish शिरीष
Hi all,
I'm sure there are lot of people who use .ics
(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ICalendar) . I use google calendar. It
would be great if there was a standing RSS feed as well as the
schedule that could trickle in my google calendar.

I'm sure somebody may have already done it and/or documented the same.
If somebody has, please direct me so I could benefit from the process.

It would make it better if such as RSS feed existed (I hope it exists)
and if it does that its consistent, meaning the feed remains the same
even though release code names may changes (Intrepid, Juanty, Karmic,
L something ) :)

Right.

Ubuntu for laptops

2009-09-22 Thread shirish शिरीष
Hi all,
I have a friend who has a ubuntu laptop . She was complaining
that the OS eats her batteries more than Windows XP.

A little searching around gave me many examples of this. For e.g.
https://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/laptop-testing-team/2009-February/001239.html
and http://hardware.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=09/08/25/157209

Lots of what is said there in the comments as well is also pretty relevant.

Has there been any thought of having a distribution specifically for
laptop users (similar to the initiative taken for netbooks - Ubuntu
Netbook remix) otherwise laptop owners have to go through quite few
hoops to make it less battery intensive.

 laptop-optimized version.

I wouldn't like to see a different version, that makes two problems:

  1) More complexity with managing a version.
  2) No control when the laptop is plugged into the wall.

What would be more ideal is to sort out the file system driver so it
behaved differently when it's on battery power (or in any kind of energy
 conservation mode).

Its not just the system driver, there are quite a few issues :-

I can see it also effecting these new cloud computing servers which are
supposed to be able to conserve energy when required. I know they go
into suspend, but disk sleep is surely the first step in getting good
 power management.

I know Tso is an awesome guy, his ext4 presentation at UDS Jaunty was a
highlight for me so if he says it's too hard to do, then we might just
 have to suck it.

I'm an optimist, if these fine kernel folks have a problem thrust upon
them, they will likely solve it somehow. More resources required?

I guess so. Although I don't know who could drive this initiative. I
have zero programming knowledge although could help in finding bugs
and stuff.

Also looking from past experience (w.r.t. ubuntu) it takes couple of
releases to have things right. So even if its discussed and
soft-launched today, it would take anything between a year or a bit
more to have its benefits coming in.

From what little I have interacted with the Canonical guy in India

Some points :-

a. Vivek, I disagree when you say updates not having issues. I have
seen updates and upgrades making users cry. Some of these bugs are
known issues in the release notes and some of them are known couple of
days when people do run the upgrade (in large numbers and find an
issue and report. )

This I have seen atleast in the last 3-4 years where I have been
working/playing with GNU/Linux specifically Ubuntu.

b. Niyam, I would not just say after-sales is an issue, there's also
an pre-sales issue as well. Please see my trials of trying to buy a

c. There is also need of lot of awareness building needed for various
applications. Canonical has made a good start with the app store but
I'm afraid its still too little too late :(

d. A good article/blog post about FOSS marketing which does go into
some of the aspects can be found at

retested on latest development version of Karmic to make sure the issue
still happens there with the latest code.  ISO images are available at
http://cdimages.ubuntu.com/releases/karmic/.  If you can reproduce it in
the LiveCD environment, you shouldn't need to modify your installed
system.  Also please attach a fresh Xorg.0.log and dmesg from this
 testing.

Sorry for not replying before. The problem is that my CD/DVD writer
has gone kaput. If you promise to take this issue upstream and
hopefully get them to support it, then will invest in the CD/DVD
writer for the i845G box and test the karmic image 4 which will be
there most probably by the week-end.

PPA for latest ffmpeg2theora

2009-07-21 Thread shirish
Hi all,
I have a bunch of raw.avi files which need to be encoded to
.ogg theora codec (codenamed 'Thusnelda') which has been out for
couple of months now.

http://theora.org/news/

The latest ffmpeg2theora in Jaunty is 0.23
http://packages.ubuntu.com/jaunty/ffmpeg2theora while Karmic has the
0.24 one http://packages.ubuntu.com/karmic/ffmpeg2theora

although even the ffmpeg2theora given doesn't have the latest theora encoder

See the ffmpeg2theora release page and the theora encoder release dates.

So I have couple of questions :-

a. Now is there a PPA (Personal Package Archive) which has all the
necessary stuff for me to download the latest theora encoder and
necessary bits and pieces and work it out instead of building the
damn thing (on Jaunty) .

b. Has anybody tried the new ffmpeg2theora release 0.24 and done some
encoding with the release?

If yes, how much of a difference in quality you have had with the new version ?

There have been some comparisons made in the multimedia community and
the overall it has been told as nice.

c. The videos I would be encoding have a static background with a
person chatting or doing some movements. I know there are ways in
which I could encode the videos having a better bit-rate while at the
same time conserving some web-space as well. Does anybody know of any
switches which will lemme accomplish the same ?

I am ready to spend couple of days on this and for sure will blog the
output as well as put it on the Ubuntu wiki as well.

Any help and advise would be highly appreciated :)

Ubuntu Studio doesn't have a Live DVD

2009-07-12 Thread shirish
Hi all,
AFAIK Ubuntu Studio doesn't have a Live DVD. I suspect one of
these reasons :-

a. Its because the Live CD (of Ubuntu CD) is 619.8 MiB while the
actual data is over 1.86 GiB. Hence with around 1.1 GiB compressed
data that would shoot to 4.47 GiB and this kind of memory many people
wouldn't have.

b. There is some technical issue with squashfs which is stopping
creation of Live DVD.

c. Some other issue I'm not aware of.

Maybe OT but found this interesting article about Unionfs as well

http://www.linux-mag.com/id/7409/2/

This info. I knew to be correct as far as Ubuntu Studio Hardy is
concerned, if its no longer true, my apologies. That's the last time I
checked the Ubuntu Studio release.

Deepening the GNU/Linux community

2009-07-10 Thread shirish
Hi all,
Apart from the usual things that one needs to speak about
Free Software, I have also made some pointers as to the way I see
things in my community
http://flossexperiences.wordpress.com/2009/07/09/deepening-the-gnulinux-community/

This is just an attempt to let some of the developers, testers, users
and to be users to know what some of the problem areas and atleast
have awareness about them. Some of them have answers, for some answers
need to be found and so on and so forth.

Feel free to add or rip apart whatever you think is right. Also
perhaps some of these questions could be used if found fitting with
technical audiences (as they love challenges :) ) .

Comments, suggestions, brickbats all welcome :)

[Bug 327206] [NEW] sync/merge e2fsprogs 1.41.4 from upstream

2009-02-09 Thread Shirish Agarwal
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: e2fsprogs

e2fsprogs has released a new update.

From http://e2fsprogs.sourceforge.net/e2fsprogs-release.html#1.41.4

E2fsprogs 1.41.4 (January 27, 2009)

Fixed a bug which could sometimes cause blkid to return an exit value of
zero for a non-existent device (Addresses Debian Bug: #502541)

Blkid will now recognize ext3 filesystems that have the test_fs flag set
as ext3 filesystems.

The blkid library will now recognize btrfs filesystems and swap devices
currently used by user-level software suspend.

Tune2fs now updates the block group checksums when changing the UUID to
avoid causing e2fsck to complain vociferously at the next reboot.

Tune2fs's inode size resizing algorithms have been fixed so it is not
vastly inefficient for moderate-to-large filesystems, due to some
O(n**2) and O(n*m) algorithms that didn't scale well at all.

Fix tune2fs's inode resizing algorithm so it will not corrupt
filesystems laid out for RAID filesystems; in addition, tune2fs will
refuse to change the inode size for filesystems that have the flex_bg
feature enabled. (This is a limitation in the current implementation of
tune2fs -I.)

E2fsprogs 1.41 broke debugfs's logdump command for normal ext3/4
filesystems with 32-bit block numbers, when the headers for 64-bit block
numbers was added. This regression has been fixed.

Debugfs's ncheck command has been fixed to avoid printing garbage
characters at the end of file names.

Fix resize2fs for ext4 filesystems. Some blocks that that need moving
when shrinking filesystems with uninit_bg feature would not be moved. In
addition, blocks and inode table blocks were not being correctly freed
when shrinking filesystems with the flex_bg feable, which caused
resize2fs -M to fail. Finally, when blocks are moved, make sure the
uninitialized flag in extents is preserved.

Fix bug which caused dumpe2fs to abort with an error if run on a
filesystem that contained an external journal.

Some distributions used mke3fs as an alias for mkfs.ext3; check for
this in argv[0] to provide better legacy support for these
distributions. This is a practice that should NOT be continued, however.

Mke2fs now has a new option -U, which allows the user to specify the
UUID that should be used for the new filesystem.

Mke2fs will treat devices that are exactly 16TB as if they were 16TB
minus one block. This allows users who have read that ext3 supports up
to 16TB filesystems and who create a 16TB LVM to not get confused, since
the true limit is really 16TB minus one block.

E2fsck will no longer abort an fsck run if block group has an errant
INODE_UNINIT flag.

E2fsck now distinguishes between fragmented directories and fragmented
files in verbose mode statistics and in the fragcheck report.

Fix a bug in e2fsck which casued it double count non-contiguous extent-
based inodes.

E2fsck will leave some slack space when repacking directories to allow
room for a few directory entries to be added without causing leaf nodes
to be split right away.

Fix a bug which caused e2fsck to crash when it comes across a corrupted
interior node in an extent tree with the error message: Error1: Corrupt
extent header on inode XX

E2fsck problem descriptions involving the journal are no longer referred
to as ext3 problems, since ext4 filesystems also have journals.

Fix a long-standing bug in e2fsck which would cause it to crash when
replying journals for filesystems with block sizes greater than 8k.

Update Catalan translation from the Translation Project.

Fixed various Debian packaging issues --- see debian/changelog for
details. (Addresses Debian Bugs: #503057, #502323, #511207)

alej0,
It would be nice if you could/would forward the patch upstream as well (for
consideration) .

I also ran into this bug and had to use your work-around. ntop should be
intelligent to know which interfaces is actually up and doing stuff.

Hi all,
AFAIK the defrag feature of ext4 is supposed to be done in
2.6.29.x series so don't think we are going to get that feature during
the jaunty cycle. Unless the developers prefer to have 2.6.29 in there
(which most probably is unlikely as not enough time for testing would
be there. )

Ok, could you please set it to at least 10 minutes (at least now for
testing, to not refresh to fast, and then blocking, example,
whatismyip.org will block requests, if they are to frequent in 60s
interval)? Also after installing new version of giplet, please try to do:
  - Remove ~/.giplet if it still around (not needed but clean up)
  - Remove the applet from panel
  - Re-add it to panel

Aha, ~/.giplet was still lying around.

Sorry, that was clearly my fault! Should be there now.

If we are not successfull, with that version I will forward this issue
today or tomorrow directly to upstream author.

Thank you, updating the index as we speak.

It seems to have not been published so far :(

p.s.: sorry for the name confusion.

Hi Salvatore Bonaccorso,
Found a way to have it working for me. In the interfaces, just put
whatismyip.org and it works. Delete everything else.

Of course, this is not something which would be apparent to the user.

[Bug 320905] [NEW] getweb has no manpage or --help documentation

2009-01-24 Thread Shirish Agarwal
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: foo2zjs

Hi all,
I tried to see if getweb has a manpage . It doesn't.

$ man getweb
No manual entry for getweb
See 'man 7 undocumented' for help when manual pages are not available.

Tried all the options given there, still nothing.

$ whatis getweb
getweb: nothing appropriate.

$ apropos getweb

$ info getweb

Then tried

$ getweb --help
getweb: Don't know how to get extra stuff for printer --help

Still doesn't tell me what it does and how to use it and if there are
any options for the same.

2009-01-24 Thread Shirish Agarwal
Hi Salvatore Bonaccorso,
First of all thank you for trying to get this one right and
taking time to respond on the issue.

I added the PPA and installed it but don't get what I need it.

$ dpkg -l giplet

Now what I'm trying to do is not get the IP from the local interface
but from the websites www.getmyip.org whatismyip.org but not getting it :(

I went to Preferences and in interfaces deleted eth0 and just let
www.getmyip.org whatismyip.org therein.

I am using dhcp. Perhaps a look at my ifconfig will tell you what I mean.

shir...@shirish-desktop:~$ ifconfig

  collisions:0 txqueuelen:1000
  RX bytes:4213783164 (4.2 GB) TX bytes:1534493981 (1.5 GB)
  Interrupt:22 Base address:0xcc00

loLink encap:Local Loopback
  inet addr:127.0.0.1 Mask:255.0.0.0
  inet6 addr: ::1/128 Scope:Host
  UP LOOPBACK RUNNING MTU:16436 Metric:1

  collisions:0 txqueuelen:0
  RX bytes:1173932 (1.1 MB) TX bytes:1173932 (1.1 MB)

In this case having either eth0 or eth1 is of no use :(

So need the info. from the sites. If you want me to do something more
lemme know.

You could also try putting up 0.2.0 if you want and I can take a spin at
it.

Also in this brief time I've been trying Giplet (less than an hour)
trying to do anything in preferences take a long long time for
Preferences to close.

Re: [Bug 307170] Re: giplet hangs from time to time

2009-01-22 Thread Shirish Agarwal
Hi all,
First of all, I am using 0.1.1 (as per changelog.gz) or
0.1.2-0ubuntu2 which was in gutsy.

Salvatore (if you or whoever is the maintainer) what I would request
or/and suggest is that put the version as a PPA if possible and get it
built for Intrepid.

Secondly, it gets deleted from the panel if the resource (in this case
getmyip.org is not up) . The only way to get it back working is to
remove .giplet/ and then add the panel again to gnome-panel.

Also moving from getmyip.org to whatismyip.org also makes it hanged.

There is actually also a need for a good error message in case the URL
is down (but that's another bug)

[Bug 311664] Re: update ttf-freefont to new upstream version 20090104

** Summary changed:

- update ttf-freefont to new upstream version 20081226
+ update ttf-freefont to new upstream version 20090104

** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: ttf-freefont

GNU ttf-freefont released a new package.

- From https://savannah.gnu.org/forum/forum.php?forum_id=5588
+ From https://savannah.gnu.org/forum/forum.php?forum_id=5601
+
+ There are three main changes.
+
+ 1) The Glagolitic range has been removed, due to an unfortunate mistake (mea
culpa!) regarding licensing of the font on which the range is based.
+ Efforts to contact the original author were made but no reply was actually
received. We are trying again, but until proper permission is given, these
glyphs will remain excluded.
+
+ 2) The old bug regarding excessive line spacing in Mono was
+ inadvertently re-introduced in the last release. It has been fixed
+ again, and the test scripts now contain tests for the problem.
+
+ 3) Daniel Johnson has provided a bold version of his Cherokee range.
+ Oblique faces have also been filled in.
+
+ Also, the license has been upgraded to GPL v3
+
+ Thanks!

  Big technical improvement

  * FreeFont is now kerned!

  Ranges added

  * Cherokee [donated by Daniel Johnson]

  [These by George Douros]

  * Gothic
  * Phoenician
  * Byzantine Musical Symbols
  * Mathematical Alphanumeric Symbols (partly--see below)

  * Thai (Filled out bold, italic styles, improved mark lookups, kerned)
  * Greek (Re-designed Upsilon, much fiddling with accents)
  * Hebrew (Added pointed letters)
  * Armenian (Added ligatures)
  * Hanunóo (Added mark lookups)

  Spacing Modifier Letters
  Superscripts and Subscripts
  International Phonetic Alphabet
  Phonetic Extensions
  General Punctuation

  Enclosed Alphanumerics
  added APL characters (but why?)

  Mathematical Alphanumeric Symbols
  =
The suitability of this whole range is of arguable,
On the other hand it is in the standard, and other characters in Unicode
(e.g. in Letterlike Symbols) refer to it, and I'm personally pushing for
completion of math ranges. And George Douros has collected the glyphs, so in
they go.

I replaced most of George's glyphs with copies of those in
other ranges of FreeFont, and some with Young Ryu's TXFonts.
His calligraphic, script and blackboard bold,
and his character naming scheme, remain.

  More languages supported

I find Daniel's Cherokee to be the best I've seen, and I've
downloaded most of the freely-available ones.

The extensions to Cyrillic should provide support for many
  living languages, including:

Russian, Ukrainian, Macedonian, Serbian, Belarusian, Rusyn, Bulgarian,
Altay, Abkhasian, Azerbaijani, Bashkir, Chuvash, Kazakh, Tatar, Uzbek,
Yakut, Tajik, Kildin Sami, Mari, Khanty, Nenets, Mordvin, Komi, Enets,
  Moldavian, Chukchi, Itelmen, Aleut, Yupik

There is a movement on to revive Coptic, so we'll call it live.

I think the Thai range wasn't really functional before the mark lookups
were added. It has now been declared quite good by a native reader.

  Kerning
  ===
Finally realized why kerning didn't work in Linux, and wasn't
  recognized in Windows. Fixed.

But I never liked the kerning tables that came with Nimbus.
I think they were automatically generated, but often didn't
make sense technically (a kern of 1EM out of 1000 is invisible)
or visually (many letters under-kerned, many badly over-kerned).

So I made my own kerning tables for Latin and basic Cyrillic.

It is likely that I made mistakes, or that I've generally over-done it.
  (As always, comments are welcome!)

The kerning in Latin is elaborate--maybe too elaborate.
It was done with consideration at three different levels:

  * repairs: letters so widely spaced that words appear broken
  * evenness: even-looking white space between letters
  * flow: letter spacing in printed text somehow flows in bulk.
This is rather more subtle than what some automatic area-averaging might
give (and harder to explain). Basically, I printed out a bunch of text
in various languages, and eyeballed it--a lot.

Latin tables were intended to provide kerning for all European languages,
and Turkish. Besides English, I printed out pages of text in
  French, Spanish, and German
and specifically kerned for pairs in these

[Bug 319379] [NEW] sync/merge smplayer to new upstream release 0.6.6

2009-01-20 Thread Shirish Agarwal
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: smplayer

Hi all,
Upstream released 0.6.6 . Please sync/merge the same.

This is the changelog from http://smplayer.berlios.de/

Version 0.6.6.

Most important changes since 0.6.5:

* Added an option to generate a preview (thumbnails) of the video.
* Added a new gui (mpcgui, a media player classic clone) developed by
Matthias Petri.
* Added some auto zoom options, to display the video without black borders.
* Implemented a new (and optional) method to save the file settings. This
method uses an ini file per each played file. It's faster than the old one.
* Added a new option in Preferences-Video: add black borders on
fullscreen. If this option is enabled, black borders will be added to the image
in fullscreen mode. This allows subtitles to be displayed on the black borders.
* Increased the resolution of the seekbar. Allows a more accurate seeking.
* Added 3 modes for the stay on top option: always, never and while playing.
* Added a history to the open URL dialog.
* Added new action to cycle through all aspect ratios. Assigned by default
to key A.
* It's possible to run some specified actions every time a file is loaded.
* Possibility to set up a proxy for internet connections (used for subtitle
downloading).

Version 0.6.5.

Most important changes since 0.6.4:

* The subtitles when using the SSA/ASS library can now be further
customized. It's possible to select the font, size, colors, bold, italic,
outline, shadow...
* (Linux) Now smplayer tries to follow the XDG Base Directory Specification
for the config files. That means the now the configuration files will be saved
under the directory $XDG_CONFIG_HOME/smplayer (or $HOME/.config/smplayer if
$XDG_CONFIG_HOME is not defined). If you want to keep your preferences, copy or
move the files from $HOME/.smplayer to the new location.
* Added some options in Preferences-Interface to configure the floating
control.
* The commandline option -ini-path has been removed and replaced with
-config-path, which specifies the directory where smplayer will store its data
(not only smplayer.ini).
* Added the possibility to select the adaptor for xv. Requires at least
MPlayer SVN r26762.

Version 0.6.4.

Most important changes since 0.6.3:

* Now the dialog to find subtitles can also download the subtitle file and
load it in smplayer automatically.
* (Linux) The black screen problem when using Compiz should really be fixed
now.
* Added support for encoding autodetection for subtitle files. Requires a
mplayer compiled with enca support.
* (Linux) Now it's possible to choose the audio device to be used with alsa
(needs the application aplay).
* (Windows) Now it's possible to choose the audio device to be used with
dsound.
* (Windows) The menu Video-Screen displays now the actual available
screens with their names.
* Added the possibility to add consecutive files (video_01.avi,
video_02.avi..) automatically to the playlist.
* Bugfix: logout is not cancelled by smplayer.
* Now the options in preferences display a tooltip with a help message.
* Now it's possible to change the video track.
* Added the Galician translation.

Version 0.6.3.

Most important changes since 0.6.2:

* Two fixes for Windows Vista. Now IPv4 is used by default (connection to
networks are faster). And now it really uses gl:yuv=2:force-pbo:ati-hack as
the default video output driver. Note: this mode could give problems with some
graphic cards (specially ATI), if you experience any, try the other gl
variants, or just directx.
* (Linux) Added a fix for a black screen problem when using Compiz.
* Added an option to select the number of threads that mplayer will use for
decoding (only works for MPEG-1/2 and some H.264 videos).
* Added the possibility to disable the audio equalizer. Seems to be
necessary to use the S/PDIF output.
* Added some options to increase/decrease the speed by 1% and 4%. This
allows to play 24 fps movies at 25 fps speed and vice versa.
* Fix: sometimes the playlist is not shown. Added a workaround for the
problem.
* Added some checks to avoid crashes when selecting subtitle tracks.
* (Windows) Added a new submenu Video-Screen to select the screen which
will display the video when using directx.
* The settings in smplayer.ini have been reorganized in several sections.
(This also means most of your preferences will be lost and you will have to
reconfigure smplayer again).
* Added an option to mirror the video. And now it's also possible to flip
and rotate the subtitles along with the image.
* Added a new shortcut set (sda.keys) which can be loaded in the shortcut
editor in preferences.
* Added two new translations: Arabic and Kurdish.

Version 0.6.2.

Most important changes since 0.6.1:

* Added an audio equalizer (please read Audio_equalizer.txt).

[Bug 137872] Re: please add support for ext4

2009-01-18 Thread Shirish Agarwal
actually should be easier, for there is lot of stuff ubuntu devs pull
from gnome .

Although traditionally, I am guessing the devs look at debian, look at
the bug-reports and then make a call when to sync with them.

[Bug 318081] Re: gnome-dbgsym not available

2009-01-18 Thread Shirish Agarwal
Martin,
This is a bug because there is no gnome-dbgsym file or a gstreamer-alsa-dbg
file.

I need both to have either a -dbg or a -dbgsym file

Hence putting the bug back to NEW

$ aptitude search gstreamer0.10-alsa
i gstreamer0.10-alsa - GStreamer plugin for ALSA
p gstreamer0.10-alsa-dbgsym - debug symbols for package
gstreamer0.10-alsa

and there is only gnome-dbg no gnome-dbgsym.

In fact one of the prime examples of what I was talking about is
brasero.

Which isn't yet part of GNOME (officially) but still the devs take

Logically, it seems this should have been the way it should, but

 a. perhaps there are issues with the approach (perhaps some race

initscripts for alsa, I don't know ) .

b. The post might be an incorrect solution to the given problem.

c. Perhaps, its a workaround but what the real issue is we don't know.

Furthermore, if there is a mailing list there is also possibility of
having some script or small utility/tool something which could be
used to give useful info. (for the developer) and see how it can be
a better experience to users (i.e. we)

A centralized place for knowing and sharing solutions is much better
as well as knowing emphasis who the people are who are maintaining
audio stuff in ubuntu /emphasis

Hi Mackenzie Morgan,
Thank you for getting back to us even though its most
probably the week-end at your end.

This is a revelation to me.

Still, there are likely a handful of people that each know a bit about
some part of the audio stack, and maybe put together there could be
 enough coverage to be helpful.

Right, now what would you advise to have some momentum and have a
mailing list for the same?

There is also a possibility (a stretchable one though) that if a
mailing list is there, it may attract people who have knowledge about
the audio stack and may be instrumental in

a. Canonical hiring them
b. Getting a corner and better support which in turn leads to better
user-experience.

possibility of opening hardware stats ? Smolts

2009-01-17 Thread shirish
Hi all,
Its been great to know that launchpad is on road to be open-sourced.

https://dev.launchpad.net/OpenSourcing

What would be cool though is to know what kind of hardware are people using
I know that currently we have a closed database which doesn't help anybody
as the info. is requested repeatedly whenever a new bug is being registered.

Other distributions have tried to open this up. For e.g. smolts

http://www.internetnews.com/software/article.php/3783491/Is+Smolt+the+key+to+counting+Linux+Users.htm

http://lwn.net/Articles/306322/

The internetnews story also claimed that Ubuntu was also considering it.

Can anybody tell me what the current status of the same is?

Is there a bug or something we can keep track of for the same?

a ubuntu-audio mailing list?

2009-01-17 Thread shirish
Hi all,
I (and many others for sure) have benefited a lot by the
ubuntu-x mailing list. The list has been instrumental (from a user's
perspective) to getting know of workarounds, better documentation on
the wiki (more importantly timely information) as well as perspective
from the ubuntu-x developers POV and road-ahead from time to time.

It would be great if something of similar nature could be also put up
for the audio experience so we know who the maintainers are for
ubuntu-audio and put up our difficulties/issues or workarounds we
believe to them and know more.

Looking forward to know if something like this is on cards.

I know that currently we have a closed database which doesn't help anybody
as the info. is requested repeatedly whenever a new bug is being registered.

It's a set of nasty problems:

 1) Device and/or hardware identification (not always easy)
 2) Filtering ambiguities and inaccuracies (take a look at smolt, how
many O.E.M Fill in here motherboards are there?)
 3) Supporting and structuring meta information, correct names, correct
manufacturers. Even so far as the list features and metrics, icons and
 pictures.
 4) Centralising and analysing, you can't do this until you have 1 and 2.
Then you need everyone to be running on the same standard.

Unfortunately, smolt and many other ideas have jumped straight to 4
without considering that perhaps 1 and 2 are important to sort out
first. My own project, which I've shut down since, taught me a great
deal about some of these weird and wonderful issues.

In conclusion, I believe that the way forward is to fix these issues:

 1) Gather dmi, bios, i2c and other system information sources with
kernel level drivers able to deliver this information via sysfs or some
 other mechanism.

Isn't this possible today ?

Consequently, a list of information needed could/should be put up
somewhere. Most probably the wiki could be a good place to put it up.

As far as OEM mobos are concerned, have no idea.

 2) Populate and structure Hal (and it's replacement) in such a way to
accommodate this none functional information sources. This includes
being able to distinguish between a hardware object and a device object.
 3) Be able to generate a unique hardware class ids that allow
destinations, even when normal class ids are the same (examples of
scanners, phones, motherboards with the same usb or pci ids but
 different metrics)

HAL's replacement being devicekit,

https://edge.launchpad.net/devicekit
http://hal.freedesktop.org/docs/DeviceKit/DeviceKit.7.html

would that have any benefits in getting some of the issues
you talked about?

Only then can you start fixing this problem properly.

 Regards, Martin Owens

Thank you for taking time and explaining everything so well.
