[Bug 112387] Including "popularity" of packages in repositories
Public bug reported: This is not a bug exactly... but I don't know how to ask for a feature request... perhaps going "up" to debian would be a more appropiate place. I was just reading an article of someone "complaining" about the massive options available to someone who just wants to install a "text editor" or a "medias player". How about being able to see how popular a package is among the repositories? That sounds like quite a change in the apt package management... but it could ease choosing the right package (at least the most popular) instead of looking at the 50 different packages available for each task. A colored bar in synaptic could be a hint. Just a thought. ** Affects: Ubuntu Importance: Undecided Status: Unconfirmed -- Including "popularity" of packages in repositories https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/112387 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Sam's patch also worked for my Feisty install on a Powerbook G4. Thank you Sam! Upgrading Gnumeric was one of the main reasons I upgraded to Feisty. (Error bars were broken in the Edgy release.) [Bug 112381] RFE: launchers should not silently fail when the launched app segfaults
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: gnome-panel It appears that my fresh install of ubuntu 7.04 laid down a faulty /usr/lib/libglib-2.0.so.0.1200.11 file. That's bad (installer media did verify ok). But that's not what I'm intending to report here. The file was present and had the correct size and date, but had different binary contents than the same file on (what should have been) an identical system. On the system with the bad glib file, gnome-terminal would not start. Eventually I discovered it was segfaulting. And after much much more sleuthing I finally discovered the libglib file issue. Attempting to launch gnome-terminal I got the familiar progress cursor for a little while, and then nothing. Why did I not get an error message? That is my RFE. I had to eventually launch xterm, and from that try manually launching gnome-terminal from a command line, to see that it was segfaulting. It further appeared that the glib problem was common to all applications that were trying to use the VTE library. Apparrently this includes update-manager, which was also very silently failing to do its job -- the update selection window would come up, but clicking the "go" button or whatever ultimately did nothing, not even issue an error message. Again, it is not my intention to report this as anything other than an RFE that gnome app launches which segfault should not be die silently, but should report to the user an error message describing what happened. It surprises me very much that they do not, and also that I found no other such RFE. Note: I do not feel it would be reasonable to think that since the root issue was a messed up glib binary that such issues cannot be addressed. These things *do* happen and they *do* need to be dealt with as best as possible if we are going to have a system which is truly usuable by everybody and their mom. Maybe gnome was indeed trying to show me an error message, but maybe the program it was trying to use to do *that* was also segfaulting (maybe because it too was trying to use VTE?). Even then, there should have been a message somewhere. I saw nothing in sytem logs (was I not looking in the right place? Where should I have been looking?). And the error notification system should have some resilience to its own failure, e.g., reverting to a simple xlib dialog in case its fancy gnome-based UI does not init. In case anyone gets here because they are having a similar problem with silently dying gnome-terminal, try sudo apt-get install --reinstall libglib2.0-0; that fixed the issue for me. You may very well have other problems. Look into debsums. ** Affects: gnome-panel (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: Unconfirmed -- RFE: launchers should not silently fail when the launched app segfaults https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/112381 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 112379] Scrolling behaviour of Slides bar in Normal view of Impress
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: openoffice.org The Slides bar in the normal view of Impress has an unusual scrolling behaviour. When reaching the last slide it jumps to the first again and vice versa. I think this is a usability problem condiering the following usage scenarios: * the user wants to quickly reach the the beginning or end of the application and uses the arrow keys (I guess many users do so). The user will actually never treach the wanted point. * the user wants to quickly delete the last three slides and does so by holding the delete key. The user will than also delete at least several slides at the top. [Bug 112371] Feisty: perl syscall.ph has wrong syscall numbers on IA32
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: perl Perl's syscall() function can be used to make system calls by passing the syscall number and a list of arguments. The syscall numbers are defined symbolically in syscall.ph. On 32-bit x86 for Dapper, Edgy, Sarge, and Etch, these values are correct. On IA-32 Feisty, the syscall numbers are the values for the AMD64 architecture instead. As a result, scripts which use the syscall() function on IA-32 Feisty will inadvertently execute the wrong system calls. Demo script: #!/usr/bin/perl require 'syscall.ph'; print "open: " . __NR_open() . "\n"; print "close: " . __NR_close() . "\n"; print "sync: " . __NR_sync() . "\n"; This will print 5, 6, and 36 on most IA-32 systems, but 2, 3, 162 on Feisty. Test case: #!/usr/bin/perl require 'syscall.ph'; syscall(&SYS_sync); stracing this script on Feisty will show a call to nanosleep() with garbage arguments; nanosleep() is syscall 162 on IA-32. ** Affects: perl (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: Unconfirmed -- Feisty: perl syscall.ph has wrong syscall numbers on IA32 https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/112371 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 112363] NetworkManager does not play nicely with Cisco wireless APs due to wme_ie being broadcast instead of rsn_ie and/or wma_ie
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: network-manager My university's wireless access points are set to output Cisco- proprietary configuration information in their beacon packets, namely "wme_ie". They *should* be outputting RSN IE or WPA IE instead, but there's not much I can do about that aside from begging and pleading with my university not to continue to be jerks to the non-Windows-using community. The Ubuntu side, however, can do something about it. Attached is the iwlist scan output from each of my wireless cards (dwl-g650 and ipw2100). You can plainly see a properly configged WPA AP and then the UI-Wireless-WEP WPA which has an Extra string. The solution is to do one or both of the following: 1) Have network-manager look for the wme_ie and understand it 2) Have the wireless card drivers convert wme_ie to rsn/wpa ie The problem with 1 is that my ipw2100 card does not pass ANY IE up to the higher layers (at least, it's not reported in iwlist). The madwifi- ng card, on the other hand, passes this information on to NetworkManager, which doesn't know what to do with it. SYMPTOMS: The WPA network is not detected as such. Consequently, when clicking on the network in the GNOME NetworkManager applet, you are only presented with two options for security: WEP and open. ** Affects: network-manager (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: Unconfirmed -- NetworkManager does not play nicely with Cisco wireless APs due to wme_ie being broadcast instead of rsn_ie and/or wma_ie https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/112363 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 112365] RFE: [ubuntu installer and] make-kpkg should be resilient to failure of mkinitramfs
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: kernel-package For whatever reason it appears that the initial install of /usr/sbin/mkinitramfs on one of my systems, as laid down by the ubuntu 7.04 installer, was borked. The file was present, had the same date and size as on another (working) ubuntu 7.04 system, but would not run. Attempting to run it gave the error "binary file not executable". The execute bits were set. Further, diff reported that the binary file contents of /usr/sbin/mkinitramfs *did* differ from the same file on the other system. Obviously this is bad. Only explanation I can think of is that there was some hardware issue, possibly with the cdrom drive or the hard drive or their respective controllers, during the install. Note: such issues *do* occur and *do* need to be dealt with if we want our installers to be truly reliable and usable by everyone. I have (sadly) installed many many versions of Microsoft operating systems on this particular machine over the years and have never had such a problem. What is prompting me to write this RFE in particular is that it took a lot of sleuthing to find this problem because, apparrently, make-kpkg (and the ubuntu installer, which I'm assuming is using make-kpkg or something very similar under the hood, is it?) does not check for such an error, and does not fail. It simply does not generate the initrd file, even when --initrd is specified. Attempting to boot the new kernel then fails of course with the dreaded kernel panic VFS: Unable to mount root fs on unknown-block(0,0) because there is no initrd file from which the new kernel can get the necessary filesystem and disk hardware driver modules. I ran into the problem in two contexts before I discovered the borked mkinitramfs binary. First, the original install (from the live cd), which appeared to complete correctly and fully, and presented me with the usal reboot now dialog and no particularly worrysome error messages, failed promptly on reboot with the above kernel panic. I was able to recover from that and boot the new system only by booting again from the live cd (which takes forever on this system at least in part due to the live cd kernel timing out multiple times trying to access a nonexistent floppy drive "fd0", but that issue seems to be already filed) and using the live cd to manually run mkinitramfs (from the live cd's filesystem, not the borked mkinitramfs on my hard drive, I still wasn't aware of that at this point) to generate an initrd into the boot partion on my hard drive. I noted that the file /boot/initrd.img-2.6.20-15-generic.bak was present on the hard drive boot partition, but that the much more pertinent /boot/initrd.img-2.6.20-15-generic was *not* present until I manually created it. I believe I also had to manually add an initrd line to the relevant stanza in /boot/grub/menu.lst. That got me booting the new install. But I should not have had to do that. The installer should have detected the problem and at least issued a severe warning. At best, it should have used debsums to figure out that the initramfs-tools install was borked, reinstalled it, verified that the new install was ok, and then regenerated the initrd. I may be a bit misled here, of course. Does the installer really use the mkinitramfs binary on the target filesystem to create the initrd? I'm assuming it does based on my observations, but I could easily be wrong. It is definitely true that there was no working initrd on my system though after the installer claimed to have suceeded (just the .bak file). The second context was that, after I got my system to boot, I built a custom kernel (primarily because the boot with the generic kernel was still quite slow right at the very beginning, and I suspected that it was again looking for hardware I didn't actually have, maybe trying to restore a nonexistent hibernated session or something, wasting my time, and then timing out) using make-kpkg --initrd. I then installed the new custom kernel .debs, which appeared to have been created without errors, and which installed without warning, and again on reboot promptly got the "kernel panic ... unable to boot ..." problem. So again I dug in and found that no initrd was created (in this case there was neither a .bak file in /boot) nor was an entry for one added to the stanza for my custom kernel in /boot/grub/menu.lst. At this point I rebooted with the original generic kernel and I finally ran /usr/sbin/mkinitramfs manually, attempting to generate the missing initrd, and finally discovered that it was borked. apt-get install --reinstall initramfs-tools fixed the problem and got me a running mkinitramfs. [I did not know about debsums at the time.] Hardware: this is an older (circa 2002) Dell laptop with an Intel IDE chipset and an internal cdrom module. Additional note: I eventually found at least one more file which was borked on install, /usr/lib/libglib-2.0.so.0.1200.11. Again the file was p

[Bug 70223] Re: Internal data flow error.
The problem is not the difficult to fix the problem or not, the problem is the people realise that they can play the film using this little click... If they don't realize that they won't be able to do anything and of course they will complain. But this is not dificult, because i had the same problem and i write in google finder "Totem ubuntu stream flow" and i find the trick. So exactly this problem is "low" importance. [Bug 78078] Re: [feisty] nm gives me an ip even if there is no cable
I have a similar problem: upgraded from edgy to feisty. network worked fine for several days. SOME incident then suddenly broke it tis morning (with yet no solution). the symptomes are: I suddenly get an additional interface eth0:avahi in Network Tools -> Devices. It is one of those, that have a random local IP addressed. That interface seems to be active but not working. The working setup on my second machine does not have such an interface. It uses the normal eth0 with DHCP. The broken machine did use this too before, when it was still working. Now I would like to know, how I can get rid of this eth0:avahi interface. When reading through the documentation on networking, i realize, that most of it seems outdated. The suggestions that are given to solve similar problems dont work, maybe because something always brings up this avahi interface. -- [feisty] nm gives me an ip even if there is no cable https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/78078 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
