[Bug 184807] Re: KDE 4 uses too much ram!

2008-01-21 Thread Daedalus
Thanks for the explanation :)
Really, it is as you said: on 600 MB, 350 are cached memory. This is not
distinguished from real memory in top nor in ksysguard (for kde3). but it is
distinguished in gkrellm and ksysguard-kde4.
Gasp, Akregator uses 10 MB of RAM!!! :)
I have tried to compare ram usage between KDE4 and KDE3 with Compiz. Ok, it
seems that KDE4 uses 80 MB much than KDE3. I think it is because in KDE4 it is
necessary to load QT3 libraries yet, infact we still need to use programs
compiled for KDE3

So, false alarm... sorry for the waste of time and for my bad english :
I'm going to set this bug as invalid.

Thanks anyway!

I don't quite get it. As you can see in the mockup, you don't need
additional horizontal space AT ALL. That mockup shows a normal

[Bug 184852] dpkg-reconfigure --all invokes update-initramfs(8) multiple times

2008-01-21 Thread Daniel Richard G.
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: initramfs-tools

On a minimal text-mode-only install of Gutsy (i.e. ubuntu-minimal +
ubuntu-standard), dpkg-reconfigure --all causes update-initramfs(8) to
be invoked no less than 10 times. Moreover, this was running on a fairly
old (Pentium II) system, and so significantly slowed down the
reconfiguration process (as each initrd update took ~2 minutes).

Initrd updates should be deferred in a situation like this, so that
update-initramfs(8) is invoked only once at the end of the
reconfiguration process.

I think B is hardly more work than C. And why create a glue library when
you can use taglib or libid3tag directly? Code has to be changed anyway.

@MP3-Players: This is a difficult issue, maybe we should rely on that
they at least support ID3 v1.

One temporary solution to avoid ditching boinc or folding for those who

[Bug 184853] Invalid partitions

2008-01-21 Thread edhaas
Public bug reported:

I attempted to install 7.10 on my laptop which has an outboard USB drive.
While installing I didn't notice it was installing to the outboard drive(which
cannot be use to boot). After the installation I checked the outboard drive
properties which did not show any change. Using the Disk Management tool
indicated two new unnamed partitions which I tried unsuccessfully to delete.
Partition Magic shows the whole disk drive to be bad although Windows XP
accesses the drive without any problem. How can I restore the outboard drive
to its original condition?

2008-01-21 Thread Trouilliez vincent
 Vincent,
If the file is an ISO you can burn it on cd or dvd.

I did buy the documentaries on a physical DVD medium, but I made an ISO
file from it, precisely so as to be able to read it from the hard disk,
which I find mch more convenient than using the actual DVD/disc.
This was the point of my bug ;-)

Hi Aaron,

Thanks for testing and the update. I'm glad to hear things are working
with the newer Hardy Alpha release. Regarding keeping the bug open, we
usually follow a different procedure. Once we get confirmation that the
bug is resolved we mark the bug as Fix Released against the
appropriate package. If it is the case that you notice a regression
with subsequent releases, feel free to reopen the bug (ie change the
status back to 'New') and post a comment about the regression. Those
subscribed to the bug will be notified accordingly. Thanks.

[Bug 184492] Re: xserver-xorg-core update breaks suspend in gutsy

2008-01-21 Thread Matthew Williams
I have also experienced X lock-ups with the new 8.3 xserver-xorg-core.
In a period of 2 hours, I had to reboot 3 times due to these lockups.
Since downgrading to xserver-xorg-core_1.3.0.0.dfsg-12ubuntu8_amd64,
everything is stable again.

Note that my lock-ups have nothing to do with suspend, but this bug seemed too
similar to be a coincidence:
- new problem with 8.3
- X locks up
- fixed by reverting xserver-xorg-core

My specs: Core 2, running 64 bit Gutsy with latest patches, save for
xorg-server-core, using intel driver

[Bug 68087] Re: xmms hangs when playing more than one midi file

2008-01-21 Thread wolfger
I just did a fresh install of xmms on Gutsy (Kubuntu) and it doesn't
play .mid files at all. I then installed xmms-midi and the .mid files
play, but I get no sound out of them. I played a .mp3 and that worked
fine. Went back and forth a few times between the .mid and the .mp3 and
eventually the app froze, and I had to kill it.

Re: [Bug 132245] Re: Error: /var/tmp/kdecache-privat is owned by uid 1000 instead of uid 0.

2008-01-21 Thread wateenellende
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 155032 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/155032

Maybe the conclusion that there is a problem with ~/.Xauthority is
premature. Please see previous discussions on the subject.

However, as you can see from my last mail, it just doesn't work, and I
do remember that this was a problem shared by people having their home
dir on an NFS mount, and that disabling the root_squash option resolved it.

So it would seem some sort of read access to the home dir is required
for root, which is denied due to root_squash. If it is not for
~/.Xauthority, I would not know what it would be for - I'm not an expert
on the subject.

Suggestions welcome!

If the trunk version of kdesudo works like my branch when it comes to
authentication. It does not rely on ~/.Xauthority for anything at all.
It does however, rely on a writeable /tmp/

[Bug 183761] Re: reported to http://www.protonic.com getting error message installing computertemp

2008-01-21 Thread Johnathon
Hi,

Firehol is quite a complex powerful firewalling program, I would be
surprised if a new Linux user would be able to administer it. (It is
Command Line Only, no graphical interface).

Yes, the problem here, was that at some point you tried to install
firehol, and for some reason that failed. (There are a whole raft of
reasons that it may have failed.)

You need to sort out the failed install thats basically, confusing your
computer, before you can install anything else.

To do this, open a terminal, and enter the following command:
apt-get purge firehol

That should completely remove firehol from your system. After that, you
should be able to install computertemp.

I hope that helps,

Johnathon

Again, if you have hardware which differs from the original bug

I just wanted to add an update to this report. Hardy Alpha2 and
subsequent releases contain an updated version of the kernel. You can
download and try the new Hardy Heron Alpha release from
http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/hardy/ . You should now be able to
then test the new kernel via the LiveCD. Please note that you can only
test Suspend from the LiveCD, not Hibernate. Tero (or anyone with the
same hardware) if you can verify if this bug still exists or not and
report back your results it would be appreciated. General information
regarding the release can also be found here:

[Bug 27014] Re: evolution bug, Summary and folder mismatch, even after a sync

2008-01-21 Thread varaonaid
I'd really appreciate some advice...

I've tried all the fixes on this page for the folder mismatch even
after sync error and none of them have worked for me. All my emails in
the inbox have been doubled but I'm worried about just going through and
deleting them because the actual size of the mbox file hasn't doubled -
so I worry I may be inadvertently deleting the originals due to this
bug. Are there any other thoughts as to what I could do?

Running evolution 2.12.1 on Ubuntu Gutsy.

[Bug 184862] udev doesn't load device driver

2008-01-21 Thread Helmut A. Bender
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: udev

Kubuntu 7.10, udev 113-0ubuntu16

udev seems not to load the appropriate driver for USB devices.
When I hotplug eg a USB stick, it recognises the event but doesn't do anything
else:

UEVENT[1200851503.450300] add /devices/pci:00/:00:1d.7/usb5/5-1
(usb)
UEVENT[1200851503.450350] add /class/usb_endpoint/usbdev5.10_ep00
(usb_endpoint)
UEVENT[1200851503.451475] add

(usb_endpoint)
UEVENT[1200851503.451509] add /class/usb_endpoint/usbdev5.10_ep81

UDEV [1200851503.453103] add /devices/pci:00/:00:1d.7/usb5/5-1
(usb)
UDEV [1200851503.455136] add /class/usb_endpoint/usbdev5.10_ep00
(usb_endpoint)
UDEV [1200851503.493306] add
/devices/pci:00/:00:1d.7/usb5/5-1/5-1:1.0 (usb)
UDEV [1200851503.495735] add /class/usb_endpoint/usbdev5.10_ep01
(usb_endpoint)
UDEV [1200851503.497489] add /class/usb_endpoint/usbdev5.10_ep81
(usb_endpoint)
UDEV [1200851503.522996] add /class/usb_device/usbdev5.10 (usb_device)

When I modprobe the driver (usb-storage) manually, it works as it
should.

Same with an Palm Zire 71 and the visor driver.

On my laptop with exactly the same versions it works; I couldn't find
any differences.

Workaround: Manual load of the drivers.

If anybody could point me to a possible debugging strategy, I could
investigate further...

[Bug 155530] Re: Cannot print on Gutsy Gibbon with HP DeskJet 720C

2008-01-21 Thread Pigeon
It has randomly decided to fail again.

cupsys is still at 1.3.2-1ubuntu7.5

No change to error messages in log - ie. still getting eg.
[489581.995636] audit(1200938082.483:38): type=1502
operation=inode_permission requested_mask=rw denied_mask=rw
name=/dev/tty pid=9861 profile=/usr/sbin/cupsd in /var/log/syslog  -
which is the same as was happening yesterday when it was working.
Nothing at all in /var/log/cups/error_log.

Setting aa-complain /usr/sbin/cupsd makes no difference.

But as before, switching to the gutenprint driver instead of foomatic
makes it work.

(Printer, as before, is HP LJ3).

[Bug 184864] Hardy VMWare Guest video drivers

2008-01-21 Thread Andrew Stabeno
Public bug reported:

It does not appear that the Hardy Installation detects the correct video
drivers when running and or installing from the Live CD with Vista\WinXP
host. I noticed when launching the Hardy Live CD in the VMWare
environment I only had an option for 640x480 or 800x600. I checked the
xorg.conf file and everything was generic. I then tried installing the
Live CD to the VM Guest and got the same problem. I also installed
Ubuntu Server on the same guest and then installed gnome-desktop
package, and I got the same problem. Installing version 7.10 on the
same VM with the live CD, upgrading to Hardy will keep all the same
config and work as well.

[Bug 106995] Re: gnome-terminal unconditionally interprets mouse wheel events

It's almost certainly caused by screen -- the mentioned termcapinfo line
(also a variant is commented out in screenrc) fixes the problem. Maybe
we should consider shipping that by default :)

[Bug 77702] Re: Memory leak in xfce4-menu-plugin

2008-01-21 Thread iain
OK. As I wrote above, I've been running xfdesktop4 (4.4.2-2ubuntu1)
since Thursday, as per Lionel's request.

There is still a massive memory leak. xfdesktop and xfce4-menu-plugin
each still leak memory horribly; xfce4-panel does not (as said in the
posts above).

It is interesting to note that memory grows (almost perfectly) linearly
- with time. I noted down memory usage daily, and could draw a straight
line graph (after converting dates to UNIX times...)

xfdeskop leaks memory at 35.2MB/day.
xfce4-menu-plugin leaks memory at 35.5MB/day.

It is also interesting how close those two figures are...

My system doesn't swap. The above figures are all for physical RAM, as
reported by GNOME System Monitor.
