[Bug 258535] Re: User Switching fails on SIS

2008-12-05 Thread Magnus S
Hi,
it seems that i am unable to get a better backtrace than the one i attached
above. Tried almost anything, but the backtrace returned nothing new.
Tried also the gdb problems part, but the xserver didn't start properly - the
cross-looking arrow and the gray background appears.
The directory /etc/X11/core does not exist. Nothing in /var/crash. Enabled
verbose logging, but nothing eatable was logged to syslog or kern.log or any
other log.
xrestop couldn't find a display, i tried a few settings but i gave up.

One new thing a have noticed is that when booting and shutting down, the
usplash image is not shown at the screens native resolution (1024x768) , it is
smaller(shows at a higher resolution). I can hit ctrl+alt+f1 and see the
messages fly by, but here is the new and interesting part:
When the computer is at the login screen, or logged in, i can't get to a tty.
ctrl+alt+f1-f6 shows no tty, instead there is a green blurry image. gdm seems
to be running at f7, f8 and f9 at the same time. After pressing ctrl+alt+f* a
few times the x-server gives up, and shows a message similar to a greeter
application has crashed, trying to restart, but it fails. ctrl+alt+backspace
takes me back to login screen.
I cant recall I've seen this behavior in the past. Perhaps my monitor (Nokia
447PRO) is part of the issue?

Attaching a VERY bad photo of the screen when at tty1.

This bug is well known in Openchrome project.
Also exist in Fedora distribution.

Here is the link to this bug:

http://www.openchrome.org/trac/ticket/263

Some people are reporting crashes either at the login screen (gdm) or
later using some applications. xorg-server is 1.5, openchrome is 0.2.903
or 0.2.903 plus panel/hw cursor patch. These crashes are workaround'ed
by using the XaaNoImageWriteRect? option. Affected hardware includes at
least P4M900, K8M890 and VM800...

[Bug 305498] [NEW] Nautilus will not recognize scripts as executable

2008-12-05 Thread ErroneousBosch
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

I changed from Hardy x86 to Intrepid amd64, originally copied over my
hidden folders in /home, and Nautilus is behaving oddly on two fronts in
regards to shell scripts:

1. It will not load scripts that are located in ~/.gnome2/nautilus-
scripts, even if they are marked executable. It does not show the
Scripts menu. I currently have 23 script files in there. I originally
had 9 in there under Hardy, and they all worked, bit have added more in
trying to get this problem resolved. I have set the permissions both
with nautilus and with chmod.

2. It will not run any of these (or any other) shell scripts if I double
click on them. I have tried changing the option on the preferences
screen, telling it to run them or to ask me. It ignores both of these
options and simply opens them in gedit.

Home is residing on its own partition, which is mounted at startup via
fstab. I have reinstalled Intrepid, clearing out hidden folders (with
the exception of some specific application configs, such as firefox), to
no avail.

I have searched google and posted in the ubuntu forums with no luck.

[Bug 247480] Re: evolution crashed with SIGSEGV in e_cal_menu_target_new_select()

2008-12-05 Thread Alan Johnson
I see that Evolution 2.24 is in Intrepid, but I really want to stick
with the LTS. Is there any hope that 2.24 will be released into Hardy
main, ever? Or even backports? I'll upgrade if I have to, but LTS is
supposed to include massive bug fix releases like this one, isn't it?
No big deal either way. An upgrade over xmas break will give me an
excuse to hide from the family ;-) , but if some one could please relay
the directly of this effort, I would greatly appreciate it. I just
don't want to upgrade to Intrepid only to have 2.24 make it in to Hardy
after all.

Thanks!

It has nothing to do with Bug #4 [1]. There is a link to bug #4, which was
automatically inserted based on the text I wrote:

I guess Launchpad automatically detects words referring to bug numbers and
inserts links to those bugs. In this case, it even created a link that
spans a newline. (grin)

and whose questions ar eyou answering/asking in last comment?

I am answering the bug report instructions in Launchpad, which asks the
following [3]:

 Please include, if possible:

The source package you found the bug in, for help see
 https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage .

 1) The release of Ubuntu you are using, via 'lsb_release -rd' or System -
 About Ubuntu.
 2) The version of the package you are using, via 'apt-cache policy
packagename' or by checking in Synaptic.
 3) What you expected to happen
 4) What happened instead

Your next question:

Does this happen with version 2.0.0.18?

I haven't checked it on 2.0.0.18. I will do so and let you know. I will
also check the latest version of Thunderbird in Ubuntu 8.04.1 (LTS).

You should really file an upstream wishlist bug if you cant find one
upstream. This is something Mozilla would have to add not us. Please post
upstream link to this bug report.

Please forgive my ignorance, I am unfamiliar with Mozilla bug reporting. To
confirm, you are asking me to file a bug with Mozilla [2], and in that bug
report, place a link pointing towards this bug in Launchpad, right?

Thank you,

[Bug 305501] [NEW] libkhtml shared library misses a dependency on libkjs

[Bug 305499] [NEW] error -22 on cifs mount

[Bug 95444] Re: No Screen Backlight Control; Sony Vaio with nvidia 8 series graphics

2008-12-05 Thread Neehilo
** Description changed:

Using Ubuntu on Sony Vaio laptop with Nvidia 8 vga card:

There is no way to control backlight brightness on Sony Vaios with 8-series
adapters, e.g.
  nVidia Corporation GeForce 8400M GS
nVidia Corporation GeForce 8600M GT (rev a1)

The registers have been found (kudos to mikes!) and incorporated into
nvclock, which you can check out by anonymous cvs and install:

  ]$ sudo apt-get install cvs
  ]$ cvs -d:pserver:[EMAIL PROTECTED]:/cvsroot/nvclock login
  ]$ cvs -z3 -d:pserver:[EMAIL PROTECTED]:/cvsroot/nvclock co -P nvclock
  ]$ cd nvclock
  ]$ ./autogen.sh
  ]$ ./configure
  ]$ make
  ]$ sudo make install

To test, make sure you are using nVidia's proprietary driver, then:
  ]$ sudo nvclock -S 100
  ]$ sudo nvclock -S 15
  ]$ sudo nvclock -S +10

So far mikes' registers have been found to work on:

  8400M GS:
  VGN SZ650N, SZ61MN/B, SZ730E, SZ750N, SZ71MN/B, SZ71E

  8400M GT:
  VGN FZ38M, FZ31M, FZ11Z, NR31, AR41E, FZ11S, FZ290, FZ250AE, FZ21E, FZ21M,
FZ470E, FZ340E, FZ190N, FZ18M, FZ31E, FZ18E

  8600M GS:
- VGN FZ31Z, FZ21Z
+ VGN FZ31Z, FZ21Z, FZ31S

  8600M GT:
  VGN AR51SU, AR71S

Add your model to the list by clicking on the Update description /
tags link, NOT by asking in a bug comment for someone else to do it.

To get hotkeys to work, follow the instructions in this comment:
  https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/hotkey-setup/+bug/95444/comments/75
or install the package at :
  https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/hotkey-setup/+bug/95444/comments/111

Dual-adapter models (SZ6 among others) can get backlight control with
the Intel adapter using xbacklight, and can get hotkey functionality as
  per bug #173652.

[Bug 202442] Re: Driver for Terratec Cinergy C PCI tv tuner

I am now on Ubuntu 8.10. The Terratec Cinergy C PCI tv tuner card

the kernel is updated. I haven't really tried getting the remote control

[Bug 305505] [NEW] post-installation script error

2008-12-05 Thread Joachim Mathes
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: flex

When I install 'flex' 2.5.35-2ubuntu1 on Intrepid Ibex 8.10 (or 'bison-
doc' by the way), the installation stops with the error message:

E: flex: subprocess post-installation script returned error exit status
1

Nevertheless 'flex' is installed correctly. The detailed installation
protocol reveals, that the error occurs when 'install-info' tries to
append the corresponding info-document to the info tree:

Selecting previously deselected package flex.
(Reading database ... 214614 files and directories currently installed.)
Unpacking flex (from .../flex_2.5.35-2ubuntu1_i386.deb) ...
Processing triggers for man-db ...
Setting up flex (2.5.35-2ubuntu1) ...
install-info: No dir file specified; try --help for more information.
dpkg: error processing flex (--configure):
subprocess post-installation script returned error exit status 1
Errors were encountered while processing:
 flex
E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1)
A package failed to install. Trying to recover:
Setting up flex (2.5.35-2ubuntu1) ...
install-info: No dir file specified; try --help for more information.
dpkg: error processing flex (--configure):
subprocess post-installation script returned error exit status 1

The reason for this is a wrong parameter set for 'install-info'. If you
have a look at

/var/lib/dpkg/info/flex.postinst

you will find the line:

install-info --quiet --section Development Development \
 --description=A fast scanner generator /usr/share/info/flex.info

The correct synopsis is:

install-info [option]... [info-file [dir-file]]

But if 'info-file' or 'dir-file' are not specified, you have to define
them with the respective options. So, the correct 'install-info' command
must look like this:

install-info --quiet --section Development Development \
 --description=A fast scanner generator /usr/share/info/flex.info
/usr/share/info/dir

If you correct this and call:

sudo apt-get upgrade

afterwards, the error will disappear.

[Bug 305503] [NEW] OO Writer Insert-Frame loops if no jre installed

2008-12-05 Thread DaveR
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: openoffice.org

Insert Frame click Macro tab (see attached screenshot)

If a jre isn't installed it is impossible to exit from this error window
since it respawns on close. One must kill OO perhaps losing current
work. IMO closing the warning/error window should be possible to allow
recovery.

Installing jre and the OO java package solves the problem.

Output from the Sysinfo applet is atteched

[Bug 305437] Re: Nautilus won't mount floppy disks

2008-12-05 Thread IanW
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better.

Two common reasons for the error mount:/dev/fd0 is not a valid block device.
are:
1) The floppy is defective or corrupt.
2) Trying to mount the drive while it's empty (no disk in it).

Once you're sure those are not the problem,
3) Please run the command gnome-mount -v -b -d /dev/fd0 and attach (don't
paste) the output to this bug report.
4) Please run the command dmesg dmesg.log after a fresh boot and attach
(don't paste) the resulting file dmesg.log to this bug report.

[Bug 262533] Re: Imap message improperly separated

2008-12-05 Thread Paul Boyer
Thanks John for looking into this.

I don't know how to help you reproduce without disclosing too much personal
data. I include a screenshot of such scrambled messages that I moved from my
gmail imap inbox to a local folder. I tried to compact and it didn't solve the
issue. I have migrated to ubuntu 8.10 since my first post. I still have the
issue, but it seems to be less often. The behaviour very much looks like a race
condition somewhere.
Some of the operations that might be racing when the problem occurs :
* delete (mark as delete and delete on the IMAP server only when sync), the
move to local folder (which also marks as delete)
* look for new messages on multiple gmail imap accounts
* send messages via gmail imap accounts (and copy outgoing message to gmail
imap folders)
* html rendering (I find this very slow, but I don't know if it is normal)
I also have mail.server.default.mime_parts_on_demand set to false and
mail.server.server[2;3;4].offline_download set to true
I have also tried compact many time on my imap folders, which I have no idea
if it actually compacts the local copy or just messes all up. I have also made
everything available offline, which makes some huge local copies (a few Gigas).

[Bug 180362] Re: mplayer plugin firefox only produces sound in active window

2008-12-05 Thread darylb
Hi, I have reproduced this issue with mozilla-mplayer 3.55-1ubuntu2 on Ubuntu
8.10 with the listen live link from this page:
http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio1/
The link opens a small popup window with a player in it. If I hide this window
behind another firefox window, the sound stops completely. It comes back
however if you bring the iPlayer Radio Console window to the front again.

This seems to work as a workaround: In GNOME, right click on the window
title and select Always on Top, then minimise the window. Minimising
the window on its own may actually be enough.

[Bug 291259] Re: smb:// URI's do not work

2008-12-05 Thread Leif Gruenwoldt
Yes this also affects any 'Windows share' that has been bookmarked.

Steps to reproduce

1. Places-Connect to Server...
2. select Service Type 'Windows share'
3. enter appropriate login details, but DO NOT enter the share name
4. check 'Add bookmark'
5. click connect

* A nautilus window will open, close it for now

5. Places-Bookmarks and select the windows share we just created

* Could not open location 'smb://example-server/' No application is
registered as handling this file

6. Now navigate to Places-Home (just start nautilus)
7. In your nautilus window select the Bookmarks menu and choose the windows
share we created

* It will work now

Notes:

So back in step 3 when I said DO NOT specify the share name that was
very important. If you DO specify the share name, step 5 will work just
fine. This is a regression. It worked fine for me in gnome 2.22

[Bug 305517] [NEW] [jaunty] Xorg freezes with nvidia when playing videos

Xorg freezes, and uses 104% of my CPU, whenever I try to play video
files, this was with the drivers in the repos, and with the beta driver
from nvidia's site. Yes, top said 104% over ssh. Mouse and keyboard

[Bug 305515] [NEW] gnubiff icon no more uses the geometry settings

2008-12-05 Thread Pierre Frenkiel
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnubiff

since about 2 weeks, the gnubiff icon appears at random positions, instead of

[Bug 305398] Re: NetworkManager Applet cannot see my ethernet connection anymore

I have similar problem. Suddenly my networking stopped working. The
problem was it could not assign the DNS servers, even when I typed them
in the network manager. Finally I edited /etc/resolv.conf

And even now when it is working I see the same thing:

Error displaying connection information:

No valid active connections found!

[Bug 305301] Re: radeon xorg driver hangs system when resuming from suspend

2008-12-05 Thread gene
Forgot to mention to more things here.
1) the system resumes fom the hibernate without a problem, however
2) occasionally, when waking up from hibernate or booting (when the system gets
there and doesn't hang) I see some change in the window decorations. Things
appear different from my setting. I go to the gnome appearance menu. It either
does not start and complains about gnome-setting-manager or just restarts X and
everything look nice. Also when after hibernate I see some colored lines around
the window frames, I fix it by the compiz --replace command. (But this last
one might be just a gnome and/or compiz issue)

[Bug 293023] Re: Ubuntu 8.10 booting hangs for a while on configuring network interfaces on iwl3945 and iwl4965

2008-12-05 Thread manolo
It still hangs a lot... I suppose nothing changed. Actually I just modified the
number of seconds of that timeout (from 60 to 5) in /etc/dhcp3/dhclient.conf
but without uncommenting the corresponding line (I didn't realize there was a
'#' precedeing the corresponding line...)
Anyway, I'm attach that log chart and remark my precedeing dmesg refers to the
(actually unmodified, because of that '#'). Now I reboot and attach a new chart
referring tu the uncommented dhclient.conf

Stay tuned ;)
Thanks for your time!

[Bug 271932] Re: Xorg crashed with SIGSEGV in DRIGetContextStore()

2008-12-05 Thread Richard Gabriel
I believe the last comment referred to a different video card. I have
the video card mentioned in this bug description and I still cannot log
into Gnome without it crashing. However, the my error only occurs when
DRI is enabled. Disabling DRI makes the login possible, but the
computer is very slow. I ended up reverting to Hardy because this
problem caused such a reduction in productivity.

This may be a duplicate of bug #285250.

[Bug 222174] Re: B43 driver causing numerous APIC errors

2008-12-05 Thread nukedathlonman
I'm not runing Kubuntu on my Acer Aspire 5002WLMi anymore - I'm running
Debian AMD64 Etch/Lenny/Sid (Etch with serveral things ported from
testing unstable). At anyrate, try compiling a Kernel from kernel.org
- all my wireless problems completly disappeared when I started running
the Kernel 2.6.28.x series kernels from there (I only see an occasional
APIC error - out side that, I'm now getting solid very reliable
connections with b43). And these APIC errors are not with Acer
coputers, I've seen many system logs from serveral brand of laptops
(HP's, Compaq's) that use broadcrum based wireless adapters. Most
people ignore them, and everyone has told me to not worry about them
because it's a non issue.

[Bug 305516] [NEW] livecd missing Intel Gig-E network driver

2008-12-05 Thread StevenD57
Public bug reported:

I downloaded Ubuntu 8.04.1 live cd and tried to boot my IBM Thinkpad T42
laptop. This laptop (and many other thinkpad laptops) has an Intel
82540EP Gig-E wired network chip. The 8.04.1 livecd failed to load a
network driver for the chip. I also have a live cd from ubuntu 7.10 and
that release does successfully load a network driver on this same
laptop. This chip is identified as the following from a lspci listing:

02:01.0 Ethernet controller: Intel Corp. 82540EP Gigabit Ethernet
Controller (Mobile) (rev 03)

I tried manually doing a modprobe of the igb and e1000e-ich9m drivers
that were present on the 8.04.1 cd under
/lib/modules/2.6.24-21-eeepc/ubuntu/ but neither of those seems to have
worked for the 82540EP chip in this Thinkpad T42 laptop. When I boot the
same laptop with the live cd from 7.10 the driver that gets loaded and
seems to work for this chip is e1000.

[Bug 303199] Re: virtualbox-ose-modules broken AGAIN

2008-12-05 Thread Steven Willis
It's even simpler than that:

sudo apt-get install virtualbox-ose-source
sudo module-assistant auto-install virtualbox-ose-source
sudo /etc/init.d/vboxdrv start

(the last step basically just loads the module with modprobe, but it
also does a little bit of house keeping)

And you might only need to run the last two steps from above; according
the the module-assistant man page:

auto-install is followed by one or more packages desired for
installation. It will run prepare to configure your system to build
packages, get the package source, try to build it for the current kernel
and install it.

Confirming here, on Ubuntu 8.10. I never saw this bug on Ubuntu 7.10/8.04.
I'm using search folders backed by an IMAP email account.

For search folders, I can increase the unread message count by:

1. Selecting all messages in the search folder, with Ctrl-A.
2. Marking them all as unread, using Mark as Unread.
3. Deselecting all messages.
4. Reselecting all messages in the search folder, with Ctrl-A.
5. Marking them all as read, using Mark as Read.

At this point the unread message count seems to increase :).
I can't seem to get the counts of unread messages back to zero again...

Incidentally, I've cleared out my Evolution config and recreated it from
scratch a couple of times. However, the bug eventually reappears after a
day or two.

[Bug 284962] Re: offline work is not possible, email download crashed

2008-12-05 Thread John Vivirito
This bug report does not contain enough info to proceed. Please provide
versions extensions a backtrace if imap and pop or what not. As much
info as possible is needed, if you think it will help or not let us
determine the help it provides. if you use apport to file it it will be
best.

though.

[Bug 252094] Re: Poor graphics performance and rendering errors on Intel GM965 system, Ubuntu 8.10

2008-12-05 Thread Arthur Haney
MPC's method works for me. I am currently running 64-bit Intrepid with a
custom kernel ( 2.6.28-rc7 ). I only wish that I had found out about
this method before spending hours of frustration compiling and testing
things trying to find something that worked atleast halfway decently.
Besides the kernel, I just installed all of the upgrades from xorg-
edgers for intrepid and then I changed to jaunty and installed all of
the upgrades from their. I didn't get doubled performance (atleast not
according to glxgears, but that may be due to slower cpu) but
performance did go from 400 to about 700 - and I can now play 3d games
(nothing would run before).
