[Bug 288888] Re: Dell 5720 Sprint device not detected by NetworkManager

2008-12-06 Thread Cyclebrock
I can second that the card still fails to show up in Networkmanager. In
my case however, it is the same card, but the Telus version.

[Bug 288850] Re: universalindentgui crashes on start with segmentation fault

Note that debian unstable has a slightly updated package, and it does
not crash there.

If someone on Ubuntu 9.04 can test if the program crashes there - if it
doesn't, a backport would fix this.

[Bug 305837] [NEW] No dots in script filenames?

2008-12-06 Thread Radu C
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: initramfs-tools

Hi,

Files placed in the scripts directory can no longer have a dot in their
names (i.e. no script.sh files in there). This worked in Hardy. Is there
a reason for this?

A friend pasted me this patch, but I think it may need more than just
the dot in the expression (spacing may be badly messed up):

Public bug reported:

On my system I did this:

# apt-get remove openjdk-6-jre
# apt-get remove openjdk-6-jdk
# apt-get remove sun-java6-jre
# apt-get remove sun-java6-jdk
# apt-get clean
# apt-get autoclean

Then I deleted all references to Java that I could find
(/etc/alternatives, /usr/share/java, and such), as they were not removed
by removing the packages.

Then I installed Java using Sun's packaged JDK into /opt.

Then I installed OpenOffice.org using:

# apt-get install openoffice.org-core openoffice.org-base

There is a dependency on gij, which is another bug (I already have Java
installed and in the path, just not installed via the package management
system because it is not cleanly removing items). The OpenOffice
installer should check to see if it can run Java, rather than having a
simple package dependency. Otherwise we get multiple Java Virtual
Machines on the same computer, which is inefficient.

All that said, I did an export (using Kubuntu) of a page to PDF.

Attached is the screen shot.

This bug has not been resolved, AFAIK.

[Bug 94821] Re: dd fills up kern.log, syslog and messages

2008-12-06 Thread Bram
This happens to me too. I am not sure if dd really is the problem or
indeed just the messenger, but it does appear suddenly right before the
problem occurs, while also using a lot of cpu (1 of 2 cores is totally
busy which is almost never the case on this machine). my computer just
freezes when the root partition is filled up on those log files and
that's really anoying as you might geuss

im running intrepid (2.6.27-9-generic, also happens with i think it is
2.6.27-7-generic). my geuss is that something is wrong with the wireless
driver (iwlagn), just because dmesg also complains a lot about that,
certainly in combination with vmware 2.0, which it tries to link for nat
networking, but this could be a sepperate problem

a lot of stuff going wrong, any idea where to start?

[Bug 305817] Re: package linux-image-2.6.27-7-generic 2.6.27-7.16 failed to install/upgrade: subprocess post-installation script returned error exit status 17

2008-12-06 Thread danielhollocher
well, I'm pretty sure that I won't be able to help you, but there is
still a question you have not answered, which is, what are you trying to
do? You say that you have Ubuntu booting off of a USB drive. Thats
working. What is leading to this error that you are getting? I assumed
you were trying to install to a harddrive from a livecd, but now I don't
know.

Typically, on bug reports, you should give step by step instructions of
how you got the error. That way, people can know what you are doing,
and can either see what you are doing wrong or reproduce the bug, and
begin prepping it for a fix.

[Bug 300966] Re: Xubuntu 8.10 intrepid ibex - Sony Vaio PCG-V505BX freezes within 30 minutes or so

2008-12-06 Thread Mathja
Something similar, happens on my Dell XPS M1210 with Dual Boot Windows
XP and Ubuntu 8.10. My system suddenlly freezes even the clock stops,
but I can move my cursor in very very slow and not-smooth way. Keyboard
does not respond. Ctrl+Alt+del or backspace doesn't work. But during all
this process my 'thinking' LED (I dont know how to call it) is on. Its
like if suddenlly an applications starts using 100% of CPU capability
and everything slows down and freezez. Just like in windows 95...

This has happened to me about 5 times this week. And everytime I have
been using different applications so I dont know if there is anything in
common (besides the symptoms). I am no sure but I think that in this 5
times, I had a pdf viewer running (could have been evince or acroread, I
use both). By the way in each of this five times I had to force reebot
by using the power button.

I will try to run top a dmesg if this happend again, but really don't
think that ctrl+alt+f2 will work.

Any other thing I could attach to give you more information?

[Bug 305843] [NEW] wireless scan is lagging

2008-12-06 Thread Radu C
Public bug reported:

The Ubuntu 8.10 network manager's wireless scan is lagging. It was fine
in 8.04

Here's what happens:

I'm in location A, with a bunch of wireless networks, and I attach to
one of them. I do my stuff, etc. etc. After a while I put my laptop into
suspend mode and go to location B, on the other side of town. I wake my
laptop there and... it attempt to connect to the previous wireless
network. The new networks are added to the list, but the old ones are
kept around for a while as well, with strong signal strengths too.

This results in a dialog windows asking me for the right wireless
passphrase for a non-existent wireless network. I have to either be fast
enough and select a proper access point before the dialog shows up, or
cancel it and select the proper network then. And I need to know what
the proper network is.

After a while, the old networks go away, but why don't they go away as
soon as I suspend or wake the computer? They used to in 8.04

[Bug 305817] Re: package linux-image-2.6.27-7-generic 2.6.27-7.16 failed to install/upgrade: subprocess post-installation script returned error exit status 17

2008-12-06 Thread Florian Diesch
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better.

From DpkgTerminalLog.txt:

| Setting up linux-image-2.6.27-7-generic (2.6.27-7.16) ...
| Running depmod.
| update-initramfs is disabled since running on a live CD
| Failed to symbolic-link /boot/initrd.img-2.6.27-7-generic to initrd.img.
| dpkg: error processing linux-image-2.6.27-7-generic (--configure):
| subprocess post-installation script returned error exit status 17

That suggests your flash drive is setup to be a live system. Do you really want
that?
I guess that causes in /etc/initramfs-tools/update-initramfs.conf to be set to
no (please verify that).

If that's true, it is a bug in the kernel package's postinst script: If
creating an initrd.img is disabled creating a symlink to it should be
disabled, too.

[Bug 91809] Re: Edgy to Feisty upgrade aborted - could not install 'bsdutils'

Sorry for the delay.
The error was due to a broken archive:

[Bug 293840] Re: problem with ffmpeg and xvid

2008-12-06 Thread Paul Gevers
ffmpeg changed the names of a lot of codecs internally around their
version 9500 or 10,000 (haven't found the exact revision yet).
Therefore, the problem which is mentioned in this bug is really that the
user uses the old codec name instead of the new one. I would say this is
a regression issue, but ffmpeg is not going to fix this. Can we set the
status of this bug to Won't fix (I certainly can't)?

I Install gstreamer plug-ins to handle x264, now nautilus is able to create my

[Bug 305393] Re: Please upgrade php5 to new upstream version 5.2.7

2008-12-06 Thread Micah Gersten
Received Blog notification of potential bug:
http://www.macvicar.net/blog/2008/12/critical-bug-in-php-527.html

Here's the text:
Critical Bug in PHP 5.2.7

PHP 5.2.7 was released on Thursday but unfortunately a critical bug was
introduced during the release candidate process that essentially full
disables magic_quotes_gpc even when it’s marked as enabled. The end
result being that if you relied on magic_quotes_gpc being enabled it’s
now not, potentially a security issue.

The other problem is that even if you don’t rely on it being enabled but
have an application which attempts to undo the work of magic_quotes_gpc
you may end up with some data loss. Such code is present within most
applications that want to work with it disabled

This has been fixed in CVS so you can grab a snapshot if you've already
upgraded to PHP 5.2.7, if not then hold out for PHP 5.2.8 which should
appear early next week.

If magic_quotes_gpc doesn’t matter to you and you normally run with it
disabled then this doesn’t really matter.

[Bug 305853] [NEW] open-iscsi slow disk performance

2008-12-06 Thread Aaron Thul
Public bug reported:

Description:Ubuntu 8.04.1
Release:8.04
open-iscsi:
  Installed: 2.0.865-1ubuntu3
  Candidate: 2.0.865-1ubuntu3
  Version table:
 *** 2.0.865-1ubuntu3 0
500 http://us.archive.ubuntu.com hardy/main Packages
100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

When the server boots up from a complete power down the IO speed of the iscsi
disks performs 100 times slower than it should. To resolve this problem, after
weeks of trying different things, I force downgrade to a older open-iscsi
package and then upgrade right back using this command:
dpkg -i /root/open-iscsi_2.0.730-1_amd64.deb ; /etc/init.d/open-iscsi restart ;
aptitude install open-iscsi
Every time I perform this step the IO performance immediately jumps back up to
where it is suppose to be.

I am having this problem on two Ubuntu 8.04.1 servers one running Dell
Hardware the other Supermicro. Nothing else in the data center is
having any IO performance problems with the Iscsi device.

[Bug 76424] Re: Kernel upgrades without reboot break resume from hibernation

2008-12-06 Thread Jeremy Nickurak
Problem persists in intrepid. Seems to be the best of all possible options is:
1) Whenever you hibernate, save a copy of the grub menu.lst to a backup location
2) Change menu.lst to boot the currently running kernel by default, with a
label simply reading Resume from Hibernation.
3) If possible, add a warning message to the grub menu that booting any other
option will result in a loss of the hibernated state
4) On resume from hibernation, restore the backup menu.lst from step 1.

2008-12-06 Thread Florian Diesch
Thank you for taking the time to report this issue and helping to make
Ubuntu better.

The reported behavior is a common problem when using floating point
values: Due to the limited precision some values can't be expressed
precisely, similar to e.g. 1/3 can't be expressed as a decimal value.

As this issue isn't really a bug I'm going to convert it to a question.
Feel free to ask further questions if something about it isn't clear.

Firefox is usually fast (as if it was local) but when you right-click it
takes 2-3 seconds before the drop-down menu appears. This has also been
confirmed with liferea, so it's likely xul-related.

does liferea use xul based context menus at all?

If so, do oyu also experience the right click selects random context
menu bug? e.g. firefox fires a context (or even normal menu) entry
when you just click (moust down and up) ... i always thought this only
happened when the menu construction took some time.

OK thanks. Probably I forgot that I havent applied the patch anywhere

What we are missing for ppp is kind of unclear to me. If anyone has
