[Bug 391458] [NEW] Download tool partially hangs when space on harddisk runs out.

2009-06-23 Thread houstonhilton74
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: firefox-3.0

My harddisk was almost full and I downloaded a file that exceeded the capacity
my harddisk could hold. When this happened, a dialogue came up telling me about
critical lack of space. I deleted the partially downloaded file, and the
download window's progress bars just hung even afterward. Yet I could download
other files easily, but the progress bar was just frozen.
Specks:
Ubuntu Jaunty 9.04
3.0 Package
I expected the large download to cancel itself or let me cancel it, but it just
hung.

[Bug 391457] [NEW] Kopete missing AIM Group Chat support

2009-06-23 Thread David Pizzuto
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: kopete

Kopete claims to support AIM group chats and has done so seemingly for
quite a while. However, on Ubuntu Jaunty (Kopete 0.70.2) on my Thinkpad
T61, none of the AIM group chat features work. When others attempt to
invite me to a chat, they get a message saying Unable to send message:
Not supported by client and it silently fails on my end, even when run
from a terminal. I can't even view existing group chats, nor can I
attempt to start them via the methods mentioned in the docs: dragging
user icons into the Participant dialog or via the (completely missing)
Chat-Invite menu option.

Yes, I am running GNOME, but had the same issue under KDE last fall (KDE
4.1, whatever version of Kopete was standard in Intrepid at its launch).

I've attached a screenshot of the menus.

Thank you!

Thanks for the comments. I'm also assigning this to the grub package.
Please check the updated description and make sure it accurately
describes your bug.

If you shutdown through the terminal by typing:

does the grub menu load when you reboot?

Also, does grub load normally ever (do you dual boot normally)?

ISO and drive do seem potentially confusing, but I like your idea

[Bug 391473] [NEW] In Ubuntu 9.04, Firefox crashes when closing with multiple active tabs

2009-06-23 Thread ananth.aravamudan
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: firefox-3.0

I use Acer 4530 Laptop with AMD Athlon X2 chipset
I recently upgraded from Ubuntu 8.10 to Ubuntu 9.04.
Since the upgrade, I am facing the following problem with Firefox 3.0:
When I have multiple tabs open, and I try to close Firefox, it prompts me
whether I want to save the tab information. Irrespective of whether I choose
Quit or Save and Quit, the application crashes. The only way out is to
power cycle. Due to this, I have not been able to save any logs.
This happens for all web-sites, the only thing that matters is how many tabs
are open.
If I close all but one tab and quit, it works just fine.
I did not have this issue in 8.10

[Bug 391472] [NEW] build-essential does not include complete manpages for its libraries

2009-06-23 Thread Mike Heise
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: build-essential

Ubuntu version: 9.04
Package version: build-essential 11.4
What I expected to happen: development manpages to be included when i installed

What happened instead: they weren't

Development manpages are generally fractured between a few packages
(namely manpages-dev, glibc-doc and manpages-posix, there may be
others). build-essential should suggest these packages for

[Bug 256637] Re: ata3: COMRESET failed (errno=-16)

2009-06-23 Thread Mike of the Nile
Noticed that this had gone quiet but it's the error I now get. I had
this problem with 2.6.28-13-generic on 9.04. My symptom was this: I
would get the COMRESET message that everyone else gets, then the
filesystem(ext3) would be automatically remounted as read-only.
Eventually it wouldn't mount, citing bad superblock. It worked under
a previous kernel(the last RT) but switching back to that kernel didn't
help either.

Since I didn't have any more time to throw at this, I did the quick-fix:

edit /boot/grub/menu.lst

find the kernel line of the in-use kernel.

add noapic nosmp to the end of the line.

Save, restart, pray.

Hope this helps someone. Not sure if smp and apic really boost the
speed of a system in the way that anyone would notice, though.

[Bug 391478] [NEW] 2.6.30-10 kernel drops to busybox

2009-06-23 Thread Saïvann Carignan
Public bug reported:

This has many chances to be a duplicate of bug 391245 but I'm reporting
separately since it's not sure. bug 391245 has been reproduced with a
karmic installation on a USB key, while my bug can be reproduced with
the internal hard drive of the laptop.

I just installed 2.6.30-10 kernel and my laptop now drop to busybox at boot.
2.6.30-9 kernel still works fine. If I boot without splash and quiet, linux
seems to initialize correctly and it suddenly echo many time the same line :
sleep: invalid number '0.1'

It then says :
Gave up waiting for root device. Common problems : (see screenshot)

It also says :
ALERT! /dev/disk/by-uuid/f17... does not exist! Dropping to a shell.

However if I do a ls /dev/disk/by-uuid, the uuid is there, it exist and
there is no difference in the file name.

Re: [Bug 200868] Re: nvidia-settings doesn't have permissions to write xorg.conf

2009-06-23 Thread Savvas Radevic
Again, if you have a BETTER solution, then implement it.  Don't just
talk about it.  Otherwise I'll keep advising people to do what works

I'd have to agree with this comment, Ubuntu is (or should be) all
about the human needs, not the proper thing to do (which seems to
take enough time to be implemented).

Hacks are not fixes. Also, is this program even installed by default?
Paper cuts are only for things installed by default.

I don't know about that, but the papercut specifications include
these: https://launchpad.net/hundredpapercuts
a) - bugs that impact standard workflows (like connecting to the
network, copying files, browsing folders, etc.), rather than
specialised or corner case workflows

It is a standard workflow, people install the nvidia driver all the
time. Even though nvidia-settings is in universe, nvidia-settings _is
suggested_ by System Preferences Display: It appears that your
graphics driver does not support the necessary extensions to use this
tool. Do you want to use your graphics driver vendor's tool instead?
(which opens up nvidia-settings)

b) - bugs that are easy to address, rather that ones that require
significant design or development efforts

I don't know and probably will not be the judge of this one, but if
the PolicyKit seems hard, there is the alternative issue of applying a
mere workaround for the time being, using gksu in the menu item.

c) - bugs that relate to usability and design (like size of the
notification bubbles), rather than broken software (e.g. notifications
flickering in fullscreen)

It is highly related to usability.

I would say just making a full GUI app run as root is enough of a bug to
 not implement this 'fix'.

That's a bug *everyone* could live with, until the proper fix comes out.

You are certainly welcome to advise them of your workaround for this
bug. I just don't believe such a thing should be added to the package.

I have posted this as a papercut because it just is and there is an
easy solution (at least one of the available ones).

If we implement the gksu usage as an easy temporary solution, people
will have less to think about while fixing up their resolution issues.
This way, the developer would not be rushed into making a fix and
would make a properly defined fix with the PolicyKit patch.

Right now, I see an easy workaround, which you don't want to implement
just because it's not proper, and a hard one, which will probably
take time to be implemented. It is a papercut issue to me and probably
(IMHO) some other people trying to help out their fellow humans how to
install their driver properly.

Hi Josepth:

Thanks for the prompt response.
The only third party supplier I have listed in Repositories is:

archives. canonical.com/unbuntu jaunty

So...?
I've also reported a problem with Xsane i.e. while my Brother
MFC-215c works fine as a printer, Xsane doesn't recognise the
scanning function, even though I've downloaded the appropriate
drivers from Brother

Oh, for simple plug and play connections in Ubuntu, without
these problems. *sigh*

FWIW, there were many changes to the clock code around 2.6.24. All

same problem, they might not be.

[Bug 390975] [NEW] fonts problem if kde+gnome

If I have Ubuntu with Gnome only, no problem.

I installed systemsettings + kdebase-workspace-bin (for configuring
fonts in kde4 apps), but when I changed fonts, firefox-3.5 uses the kde4

[Bug 382379] Re: pdftops CUPS filter has several problems

2009-06-23 Thread Lennart Jütte
Confirmation:

I just printed Professor Gemminger's slides (see attachments) from Mac
OS X 10.5.7. Settings: 2 slides per side, duplex. I had to wait a few
seconds (maybe less than 10?) per sheet, but it works quite fast.

About the funny background: I zoomed in and saw the strange pattern the
author used. This explains a lot.

[Bug 389876] Re: Inconsistent: Quit without saving Firefox, Gedit, OpenOffice

2009-06-23 Thread prani_bobby
Dolfry,

Please refrain from arguing for features just because they are present
in a majority OS. We are NOT trying to emulate or copy them. We have our
own goals and can be as different as we like.

But, yes, I do agree that GNOME as a whole should present a consistent
picture instead of the current each app can create UI as it feels
comfortable idea. The consistency is important from both an aesthetic
and usability POV.

Rich,

If Yes/No is a bad idea, then we can use Save/Don't Save. The point here
I think is consistency across the entire applications in default GNOME

Well.. i got a turion on my laptop myself, and the powermanagement does
not work. The fan sounds like a jet engine, and it does not go down. The CPU is

from when the PC is booted it will continue to slowly increase its tempratur.
Running Ubuntu 9.04 with standard generic Ubuntu kernel. cpufreq as deamon to

[Bug 361754] Re: guest needs to boot with clock=acpi_pm (older AMD freq scaling issues)

2009-06-23 Thread Thierry Carrez
\o/ cpu family : 15
FYI running with no-kvmclock (as suggested by Anthony in comment 2) also seems
to work around the issue.

Dustin: running guests with clocksource=acpi_pm is also a valid solution
for those who don't want to throw out freqscaling completely (I am one
of those), so I suggest the init script check (if it is blocking and not
just a warning) could be optionally disabled by a
YES_I_KNOW_I_NEED_TO_ADD_CLOCKSOURCE_ACPI_PM=yes /etc/default/kvm
setting ?

[Bug 390974] Re: Quanta Plus does not start anymore

2009-06-23 Thread Bruno Patri
kdeinit: Aborting. No write access to '/home/michael/.ICEauthority'.

This sometimes happen when you launch a graphical application with sudo.
You can try to remove .ICEauthority or to give it back the right
permissions:

sudo chown michael: .ICEauthority

Try to remove the quanta configuration files :

mv ~/.kde/share/apps/quanta ~/.kde/share/apps/quanta.bak
mv ~/.kde/share/config/quantarc ~/.kde/share/config/quantarc

and the re-launch Quanta.

Sometime reinstalling the package kdelibs4c2a could fix the problem.
