[Bug 808372] Re: package cups 1.4.6-5ubuntu1.3 failed to install/upgrade: subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 127

2011-07-10 Thread Till Kamppeter
In the terminal log appears:

Setting up cups (1.4.6-5ubuntu1.3) ...
/etc/init.d/cups: 85: start: not found
invoke-rc.d: initscript cups, action start failed.
dpkg: error processing cups (--configure):
subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 127

Seems to be an Upstart issue.

Does CUPS have the appropriate dependencies on Upstart, so that CUPS'
maintainer scripts are only executed if Upstart is ready?

pitti, can you have a look into this?

[Bug 778676] Re: Crash on Edit Profile

2011-07-10 Thread greg
My symptoms are exactly the same as Ryan's If this were a commercial project,
This bug would be a sev1 - stop ship. How comes it's languishing unassigned.
(I'm not a coder, or I'd offer to help out ;o)

Someone please fix this as I urgently need it to set up a pre-school PC
(Natty/Edubuntu/Unity) so that pre-school kids are ONLY able to run the
programs appropriate for their age/capability and NOTHING else. The
reason I suggested Linux over their existing XP setup is because I
thought it handled exactly this use case. I presume Sabayon is able to
achieve this in Unity?

Cheers, (and thanks for your anticipated urgent attention)

Greg

[Bug 808518] [NEW] Maximised window clipped by unity launcher

2011-07-10 Thread greg
Public bug reported:

Linux school 2.6.38-8-generic #42-Ubuntu SMP Mon Apr 11 03:31:50 UTC
2011 i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux

The launcher (assuming that's the correct term for the panel down the
left hand side, containing app launcher tiles) remains showing all the
time. I thought it was set up to auto-hide but does not do so.

When I maximise a window, it is clipped by the launcher. The bug is
either the launcher won't hide or the maximise doesn't take the launcher
in to account.

Thanks, Brian. Unfortunately, Update Manager seems to be denying now
that I have any updates that need to be installed, and I don't know how
to tell it to give me the old ones back!

In addition, after running the command you provided in terminal and
trying to open Update Manager, I got three crash reports, which I have
submitted as bug #808523 through #808525.

[Bug 808127] Re: can't resize partition

2011-07-10 Thread Alex Engelmann
Actually I think it has something to do with misaligned partitions. I'm
still not sure how to fix it because of the way Ubiquity is working, but
there's others who have had trouble with 4k block size drives. I
already filed a bug in Ubiquity about it:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ubiquity/+bug/583790

GParted doesn't complain about misaligned partitions at all, not even
when Ubiquity or GNU Parted and Ubuntu's Disk Utility complain that
there's misaligned partitions. Maybe that's a feature worth adding?
Not sure which programs to trust by this point for making partitions...

[Bug 707400] Re: Sound Asus K70IJ Laptop 10.10 No Output from Headphone Plug

2011-07-10 Thread cumulus007
Owning the same device I can tell you that there is at least one
workaround, though not persistent:

- Go to Sound Preferences, Output tab and select Analog Headphones
- Run alsamixer, unmute Front (m key) and make it 100% (pageup). Exit alsamixer
(esc)

Plug and unplug the jack and it should be working now. Unfortunately,
this is not persistent as I mentioned, every time pulseaudio quits (on
logout or when it crashes), you'll have to unmute Front again.

[Bug 803350] Re: [HDA-Intel - HDA Creative] ALSA test tone not correctly played back

2011-07-10 Thread Michael N
Sound is working again. Closing this issue -- by marking it as
opinion (as I understand it, this means the issue is essentially
closed, but people can still comment on it). The problem (still) is
that I have no idea why sound stopped working, and no idea how it
started working again. Voodoo isn't really a fix, in my book.

I updated the audio drivers (again, and again, and again) via ppa
:ubuntu-audio-dev/ppa, and continued to tweak the audio settings until
some sound started to crackle through the headphones. Rebooted, and
sound was normal (for now). This is the same path I took originally
when I first set up this pc (new desktop, dell xps 8300, bought it about
6 months ago have re-installed ubuntu 3 times already.) I guess last
time I got lucky with the audio controls. That is, I'm guessing, where
the problem was this time -- the audio controls.

So, as for the opinion part: The ubuntu audio configuration is,
imho, a user-interface bug.

The pulse audio configuration is a total mystery to me. But I do
actually understand how pulseaudio works (in theory); it's a good idea,
architecturally (I'm speaking as a software developer, not as a end-
user. I'm sure end-users hate this, since it *is* confusing.) But the
problem is the interface(s) for configuring audio provide volumes (no
pun intended) of meaningless information and numerous controls that have
no clear indication as to what they actually do. Just a lot of radio
buttons and checkboxes by hardware devices and/or drivers. It's a cat's
cradle of configuration options.

Specifically, I'm speaking of pavucontrol and gnome-volume-control, (I
tried other gui control widgets whatnots, too, since most help-guides
in the forums use some older unknown version of the audio options
available via systemprefsound.) I do have multiple sound cards, and
that probably adds to the confusion in the GUI, as the GUI just blindly
lists the HW and does not explain what to do. These GUI's provide
numerous ways to specify device input/output, but there are so many
permutations (and no clear indication as to what the correct values are)
-- getting things working really is a crap-shoot.

Using ubuntu-bug audio is no help... this message is meaningless, as it does
not indicate *how* I should correct the problem: You seem to have configured
PulseAudio to use the pci card, while you want output from HDA-Intel - HDA
Intel PCH. Ple
ase correct that using pavucontrol or the GNOME volume control. Continue
anyway? (How do I correct the problem?)

So I tried to correct the problem as per ubuntu-bug's advice. After
doing nothing other than reconfiguration through the various GUI
controls, I re-ran ubuntu-bug, and it then claimed my distro was not
genuine ubuntu or some such thing, and I couldn't use ubuntu-bug
anymore (wtf?).

Eventually I reinstalled ubuntu 10.10 totally from scratch.

(Backgrounder note: Originally I had installed v11.04, but then
installed 10.10 due to system locking up and freezing on v11.04 --
perhaps due to deluge and/or playing video. Sound worked -- eventually
-- under both v11.04 and 10.10, after updating alsa driver modules.
This is dual-boot to Windows; sound always just worked under windows,
and windows never froze up like under v11.04.)

When re-installing 10.10, I reformatted drives and everything. Total
clean install. Still no sound. Eventually, weeks later, sound works
again. All a mystery. Not at all what I would expect from a linux
distro. Black magic is what I expect from Windows. There *should* be a
methodical, repeatable way to troubleshoot sound issues that a linux-
savvy person can follow. Then eventually this could be automated for
anyone, using some *simple* GUI widget or wizard. We all can't file
bugs for configuration issues...!

Ok, sorry for the rant -- but not having sound on this media center PC
for a few weeks (while guests were visiting from out of town) was a
little frustrating (and embarrassing). I had to hook up my mac to the
tv so the inlaws could watch movies. Crap. So much for changing
people's impression of linux.

Worst of all: if this happens again, I'm not sure how I can fix it.

[Bug 609173] Re: [VIA controller auto-mute] Headphone output does not work on ASUS P81IJ

2011-07-10 Thread cumulus007
#21
I installed this on my Asus K70-IJ running Ubuntu 11.04, nothing much changed
really, jack sense still not functioning as it should. IN alsamixer, the
Headphone slider is finally available but doesnt do anything. A new option
called Dynamic Power-Control has appeared, which seems to kill the
headphone-out when enabled. Muting Front mutes the laptop speakers, changing
its volume changes the headphone volume as well.

2011-07-10 Thread Abir Valg
Thank you for helping me solve this. update-rc.d did the job.
I remembered that some long time ago I had decided to trim down my system and
to disable unnecessary service, so I had fired up sysv-rc-conf and apparently
had unchecked apparmor, hence the disappeared script in rcS.d.
Cheers.

This is a VFP specific fault. One work-around is to compile with
-mfloat-abi=soft. The fault does not exist in gcc-linaro-4.5-2011.06-0,
gcc-4.5.3, gcc-4.6.1, or GCC trunk.

The fault was exposed by r106753. The fault existed in trunk from at
least r172224 until r174044 but was gone by r174684.

I've set it to high priority as it is a ftbfs, occurs at all
optimisation levels, and is in a significant package.

Walter Thanks for responding. My problem is different from the bug that
you suggested. While the problem of another user occurs during sleep or
hibernate my computer problem occurred while using the computer.
Recently my Windows was infected and could no longer start. I formatted
the computer and the problem with Ubuntu did not happen again.

[Bug 429370] Re: Eduroam randomly disconnects

2011-07-10 Thread Daniel Seither
The workaround proposed in #21 (switching to GnuTLS) works for me. I've
had no more disconnections during over 6 hours of connection to the
wireless eduroam network at TU Darmstadt.

Before switching from OpenSSL to GnuTLS, I was disconnected from eduroam
after 10 to 20 minutes and could not reconnect until restarting network-
manager.

(I'm using maverick on x86_64 with Intel WiFi Link 5100 handled by
iwlagn)

[Bug 807586] Re: Firefox 5.0 Doesn't prompt to Update or Save my Email Password

2011-07-10 Thread varuna
Hi Wiliam

Below is the procedure I followed
1 I Entered https://mail.google.com at The Firefox 5.0 Address bar
2 Clicked the Can't access your account? , The I was taken to the screen to
enter the email
address (
https://www.google.com/accounts/recovery?service=mailcontinue=https%3A%2F%2Fmail.google.com%2Fmail%2F%3Fui%3Dhtml%26zy%3Dl)
to which I am not able to access and the to the screen
(https://www.google.com/accounts/recovery/verifycaptcha) where to type the
characters that is displayed in a picture and the title under the heading
Password assistance for email address below said Type the characters that
you see in the picture below.

3 In the next screen taken to I was offered with options to select the options
to select that would can be used to get access to change the password and I
selected Get a verification code on my phone: ..##,
as a result I was sent a verification code through a text message

4 I was taken to Reset Password screen and offered to enter the new
password, with two text boxes, one to enter the new password first and
the second to re-enter the new password then I the drop down box to
Update the password appeared and I clicked Update Password and I
signed out

5 The loin screen appeared I selected the Email address of which I
changed the password just moment ago a password in dot format was
automatically displayed in the text box to which is to enter the
password

6 I clicked Sign in Button

7 The screen served was the same with the title The username or
password you entered is incorrect. [?] just above the text box to
which the password is to be entered

8 I the entered the new password to which I had changed by going through
the above mentioned process and I was taken to the personal settings
screen which did bear the Heading Personal Settings, it address
https://www.google.com/accounts/ManageAccount; , I then clicked Gmail
which is under the section Products and I was taken to my Gmail
account, the next action i did was to Sign out.

9 Now I am at The Sign in with your Google Account page and I selected
the Email Address of the password to which I had changed and a password
in dot format appeared in the password text box , oops again the message
The username or password you entered is incorrect. [?] , even now I
was not offered with the Drop Down box to Update password. I entered the
correct password and was successfully logged in, even now I was not
severed with Update Password Drop Down box.I signed out again.

10 Just as before I selected the Email address of which password I had
changed, a password in dot format appeared in dot format, I clicked Sign
in Button oops The username or password you entered is incorrect. [?]
I entered the correct password and was successfully logged in and this
keeps going on and I am not offered with the Update password Drop Down
Box even at the login Screen as you can see from the above

Pls Note:- I think this may be happening because there are
several email address to be selected each having different passwords.
The Email address I changed the password is the last and and the 7th in
set of Email addresses

[Bug 808162] Re: no confirmation for deleting from trash in Unity launcher

2011-07-10 Thread Marco Biscaro
In 11.04, unity follows nautilus' preference (ask before empty trash).
Now, nautilus uses gsettings instead of gconf to store this preference.
We just need to change the place where this option is looked for.

** Also affects: unity
   Importance: Undecided
   Status: New

** Changed in: unity

not prompted to Save the Password or Update or any kind of that sort of dialog
box did not appear that would next time make appear the password be entered
automatically once the Google account or the Email Address is selected or

[Bug 89357] Re: Editing partitions is slow

[Bug 808353] Re: [G41D3C, VIA VT1708BCE, Green Headphone Out, Front] No sound at all

2011-07-10 Thread Luke Yelavich
Thanks for your report. It appears that your volume is turned down below
50% or muted entirely. Please check that the volume level is set to a
reasonable amount. You can do so by clicking the speaker icon in the top
right hand corner of your screen, and adjusting the volume control found
in the drop-down menu. Also check that you have the rigt output
connector selected. From the same drop-down menu, choose Sound
Preferences Once a new window opens, go to the Output tab, and
choose the appropriate connector from the Connector drop-down box.

If none of the above helps, you can try updating the audio drivers, as
explained here:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Audio/InstallingLinuxAlsaDriverModules.

Please keep us informed.
