[Bug 1388259] [NEW] gnome-keyring SRU breaks ECDSA keys

2014-10-31 Thread Ross Younger
Public bug reported:

Previously I had been using ssh-add with ECDSA keys. (OpenSSH_6.6.1p1
Ubuntu-2ubuntu2, OpenSSL 1.0.1f 6 Jan 2014)
After my system updated to gnome-keyring 3.10.1-1ubuntu4.1 (picking up the fix
for #1271591) they stopped working:

wry@onyx:~$ ssh-add ~/.ssh/id_ecdsa
Enter passphrase for /home/wry/.ssh/id_ecdsa:
Error reading response length from authentication socket.
Could not add identity: /home/wry/.ssh/id_ecdsa

Downgrading to gnome-keyring 3.10.1-1ubuntu4 resolves the issue.

This appears to be because gnome-keyring does not support ECDSA.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=641082 refers.

This means that the fix for #1271591 is an overall system regression for
anybody who uses ECDSA keys.

[Bug 1387752] Re: [Dash] [Apps Scope] Ubuntu Store icon should be entire width of screen

2014-10-31 Thread Rodney Dawes
Also, the design presented here is quite bad for translations, as some
languages may have longer strings which do not fit inside the card. The
current layout works OK, as only the word store and the order of the
words Ubuntu Store need to be affected by translation, and the dash
will keep the text centered on two lines. This new design does not
support that behavior well.

Even only considering Spanish, it is bad, as the translation is a bit
long already: Consiga mas aplicaciones en la tienda

New design also introduces string changes that would break existing
translations.

[Bug 1388262] [NEW] Prevent unsuitable scanning of /dev/mem and enable SMBIOS support for all UEFI platforms

2014-10-31 Thread Leif Lindholm
Public bug reported:

SMBIOS defines that on x86 platforms one can scan for an entry point in
the physical address range 0xf-0xf - which is achieved by
mmapping /dev/mem. However, this is invalid for most other
architectures. Meanwhile, UEFI has alternative defined methods of
discovery, so SMBIOS data can be easily found on at least IA64, ARM and
AArch64.

lshw currently has a stack of ifdefs to not attempt scanning on certain
listed architectures. New architectures, like AArch64, end up with the
lshw command potentially reading sensitive i/o regions, causing system
crashes.

The attached patch (which has been logged in upstream ticketing system,
but is pending moderation there) flips the logic to only perform raw
memory scanning on i386/x86_64 and also enables looking for SMBIOS
tables on all UEFI platforms (in a safe manner).

 Importance: Undecided

[Bug 1386695] Re: [3.16.0-23] Resume from suspend/hibernation, GPU lock - possible regression

2014-10-31 Thread Andy Whitcroft
Ok I looked at backporting these three commits. To cut a long story
short one of these is not needed because it is only applicable at the
higher level (though needed there) and one is actually for dpms issues.
This leaves the commit below:

  commit 63621dafc8e140afdfa12c8deadb41af818e455d
  Author: Ben Skeggs bske...@redhat.com
  Date: Wed Oct 1 11:11:25 2014 +1000

drm/nouveau: punt fbcon resume out to a workqueue

plus a foundation commit:

  commit b6437dc0bfc8018c4c3a9e36cffdd073a4c1cf70
  Author: Ben Skeggs bske...@redhat.com
  Date: Sat Jun 28 20:44:07 2014 +1000

drm/nouveau/kms: take more care when pulling down accelerated fbcon

I produced test kernels for these which @Nik.Th validated. I will
submit these to kernel-team@ for review.

[Bug 1384981] Re: system-settings transparent

2014-10-31 Thread Julie Brandon
I had this issue, but also noticed a few other bugs (like doubled up
Printer icons, old icons that shouldn't be there any more, missing icons
and some settings failing such as the screen settings) - I fixed it
simply through an apt-get install ubuntu-desktop (although I imagine
just doing the system settings app would probably have worked too.)

I strongly suspect it's a side effect of going from 14.04 to 14.10 as
the distribution upgrade app broke near the end on all machines I did
the upgrade on and the process had to be manually fixed on all machines
I did such an upgrade on (that taught me a lesson!)

Did you guys also have a similar almost-a-show-stopper distribution
upgrade bug, by any chance?

(SO sorry I'm sparse on details - if it becomes relevant I can do some
research and backtrack and locate the bug .)

[Bug 1378438] Re: Printer dialog stuck on Getting printer information...

2014-10-31 Thread Joe Barnett
As stated above, no symlinks in temp. the only thing I do get when i
open a print dialog is an empty /tmp/systemd-cups.service-

trusty to utopic, before I switched to systemd.

/etc/cups/ppd is empty for me:

[Bug 1388267] [NEW] Main screen zoom widget doesn't work

2014-10-31 Thread ToZ
Public bug reported:

Xubuntu 14.10, evince 3.14.1-0ubuntu1

The zoom widget on the main screen does not work. Clicking the arrow
icon does not drop down a list of zoom values like it did in the
previous version. Zooming from the main screen is impossible.

As a workaround, zoom from the View menu (and associated keyboard
shortcuts) still work.

[Bug 1388160] Re: [ASUS X200MA] Touchpad scrolling not working

I can add that there is exactly same pnp id as in

i8042: PNP: PS/2 Controller [PNP030b:PS2K,PNP0f03:PS2M] at 0x60,0x64 irq

So this is a duplicate of 1372609 as I always thought.

Yeah, I've got a bug open in Debian (#740034), I certainly don't mind
if you add your patch there since it is still open. Actually, I need
to increase the severity now since arm64 is part of the archive.

Added.

I'd suggest opening a separate bug in LP to enable this class of

would cause confusion. Would you mind doing that or should I?

I don't mind, but as always I am slightly unsure of what level of
severity I should raise it at.

Well, if it is negatively impacting shipping hardware (i.e. lshw is
unable to report certain things because of the lack of smbios
support), I'd say High since I consider that a hardware enablement
issue. If it's just a correctness thing at this point, my opinion
would be wishlist. That's just my opinion though, feel free to use
 your own judgment.

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/lshw/+bug/1388262 raised.
And I don't have access to set severity anyway, so I'll leave that up
to you :)

[Bug 1388160] Re: [ASUS X200MA] Touchpad scrolling not working

2014-10-31 Thread Mathias Gottschlag
This is basically the same touchpad as in
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1372609.

Can you maybe:
 - Run the program in comment #32 of that bug? I am specifically looking for
the maximum and minimum coordinates reported by the touchpad, e.g. in the
output which occurs when you put your finger onto the edge of the touchpad.
You'd need to run modpobe serio_raw echo -n serio_raw
/sys/bus/serio/devices/serio4/drvctl, and then the program, like sudo ./init
/dev/serio_raw0
 - Test the driver at https://github.com/mgottschlag/linux/tree/focaltech2 ?

[Bug 1388271] [NEW] serf-1.pc file has incorrect paths

2014-10-31 Thread Ben Reser
Public bug reported:

SERF_MAJOR_VERSION=1
prefix=/usr/local

includedir=${prefix}/include/serf-1

Name: serf
Description: HTTP client library
Version: 1.3.7

Libs: -L${libdir} -lserf-${SERF_MAJOR_VERSION}

Note that prefix should be /usr and libdir should be /usr/lib/x86_64

This problem manifests itself as Subversion being unable to build with

[Bug 1310270] Re: cannot use screen command at boot

2014-10-31 Thread UbuntuAddicted
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 574773 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/574773

this is a duplicate bug but they specifically told us to report a new bug
against 14.04. I'm running Xubuntu 14.04.1 and I have an init.d script called
minecraft which has the following screen command
as_user cd $MCPATH /usr/bin/screen -dmS survival-mc /usr/bin/java -Xms2048M
-Xmx2048M -Djava.net.preferIPv4Stack=true -XX:MaxPermSize=128M -XX:UseSSE=3
-XX:-DisableExplicitGC -XX:+UseParallelOldGC -XX:ParallelGCThreads=4
-XX:+AggressiveOpts -XX:+UseCompressedStrings -jar $SERVICE nogui

and I can see in the boot up messages the following error
Cannot make directory '/var/run/screen': Permission denied when I use the
screen command.

How do I fix this please?

[Bug 1388276] [NEW] 14.10 about 2 to 3 times slower to perform concurrent tasks

2014-10-31 Thread Emmanuel Stapf [ES]
Public bug reported:

I've just upgraded two servers to use 14.10 (they were before at 14.04) and
found that my builds were taking much longer:
- A jenkins regression test suite that took about 135 minutes is now taking
about 300 minutes.
- A C complation tasks which took the following amount of time (time from
tcsh):
 419.633u 9.471s 1:36.78 443.3% 0+0k 0+166968io 0pf+0w
is now taking
 519.637u 11.022s 4:42.80 187.6% 0+0k 0+176216io 0pf+0w

Both tasks are heavily using all the available cores of the processor.
In one case it is a dual socket E5420 ( 8 cores), in another case it is
a virtualized 8 cores E5645.

I first thought it could be the new version of gcc (4.9) since both
tasks involves a lot of C compilation. Although gcc 4.9 is slower (3s vs
2.8s in my own tests) it is not enough to explain the difference. I
actually also tried using gcc 4.8 and 4.7 with the same performance
degradation.

I unfortunately do not have a 14.04 server to which I can compare the
results to see where the difference is in terms of performance.

Is anyone observing the same behavior?

[Bug 1378997] Re: lxsession-default-apps in utopic doesn't list all terminals

2014-10-31 Thread Walter Lapchynski
sorry for driving everyone crazy with the status changes but i was in
the middle of confirming this when i found i couldn't reproduce it after
all.

i did find that rxvt-unicode-256color showed up, along with its
dependencies of uxterm and xterm. lxterminal, too. if you hit the reload
button do you have the same problem?

i can also say everything is in update-alternatives and there aren't
obvious problems with the .desktop files. it's unclear to me just
browsing the code quickly what lxsession-db is building the database
from, so i'm not sure where to look.

anyways by the time i got that far, everything was there. i purged
sakura and terminator and reloaded lxsession-default-apps and they were
still there. i hit the reload button. same thing. then i closed and
reloaded lxsession-default-apps and they were gone. i confirmed the same
behavior with claws-mail, so it's not just the emulator.

because of the workaround, i will mark this as low.

[Bug 1378997] Re: lxsession-default-apps reload button fails silently

2014-10-31 Thread Walter Lapchynski
** Description changed:

- To reproduce I had installed both sakura and terminator from apt-get as two
additional temrinal I also like to use. In trusty the last time default apps
for lxsession had a list where I could choose the default terminal on the main
page. Instead I only get x-terminal emulator in a drop down list. Manually
setting sakura as the default terminal works however but I want the drop down
list back as I think it is intended as otherwise there a drop down bar for
nothing.
+ STEPS TO REPRODUCE:
+ 1. install sakura
+ 2. load lxsession-default-apps
+ 3. see that sakura is not listed under terminal emulator
+ 4. hit reload
+ 5. sakura is not listed
+ 6. reload lxsession-default-apps
+ 7. see that sakura is listed under terminal emulator
+ 8. purge sakura
+ 9. see that sakura is still listed under terminal emulator
+ 10. hit reload
+ 11. sakura is still listed
+ 12. reload lxsession-default-apps
+ 13. see that sakura is not listed under terminal emulator
+ (note this is an example; using any other app or category works the same)
+
+ EXPECTED RESULTS:
+ The database update at the beginning of lxsession-default-apps as well as the
reload button should be sufficient to update the list of apps.
+
+ ACTUAL RESULTS:
+ The reload button does nothing and it takes several database updates
sometimes to get the list of apps to correctly populate.
+
+ WORKAROUND:
+ Reload lxsession-default-apps until the app appears.
+
+
  lxsession-default-apps:

[Bug 1388160] Re: [ASUS X200MA] Touchpad scrolling not working

2014-10-31 Thread Pilot6
It works. Coordinates are ~ 1663 (vertical) and 2943 (horisontal).
It is possible that there can be a couple of points on vertical more. That's
maximum I could get.

But 2943 looks stable.

I will try to build the driver tomorrow.

[Bug 1388278] [NEW] WiFi randomly disconnects and won't connect again

2014-10-31 Thread Jeb E.
Public bug reported:

Something odd that I have only seen in Ubuntu, Debian, and derivatives
thereof affects something that most of us use every day, and can be a
real hassle to beginners from what I've noticed: Many USB WiFi drivers
will connect to an access point like usual and after long periods of
inactivity on the network combined with user inactivity on the PC alone
is when this problem appears to arise: The WiFi disconnects and does not
connect again to the same hotspot using the same USB WiFi dongle unless
the computer is restarted or reset, and a lot of the time, that doesn't
immediately stop this error and even if so, the computer will disconnect
yet again not too long from then.

And why does this happen? It puzzles me. Maybe it's the USB chipset
inside the WiFi dongle, or maybe it's a communication error between the
Linux kernel and the automated firewall systems integrated in most
routers and base stations today, it's hard to say. What I know is that
this doesn't just happen on my computer, testing done by myself on
several other computers in different locations using different WiFi
hardware on Ubuntu, Debian, Linux Mint, or derivatives thereof gets the
exact same result as I am experiencing now.

I have gone digging through Debian, Ubuntu, and Linux Mint forums to try
and find the cure patch for my computer or router and the answer as to
why this is happening, and the best answer I could find is that within
my system's WiFi Settings, I need to set the BSSID of the hotspot I am
current using as the MAC address of the router which that hotspot is
transmitting.

Upon setting my BSSID to a clone of the Router's MAC address followed by
a system restart, I noticed instant improvement when it comes to
connection reliability, speed, and time to connect, yet after days of
having that MAC as the BSSID, things went back to the usual chaos of an
unreliable connection that no other device within the household has
encountered, not even Android telephones and tablets that use much of
the same underlying Linux code. I performed restarts, updates, more
updates, resets, and even more derivatives of Debian or Ubuntu and this
is still more of an issue than ever.

Via further digging and through a process of trial-and-error, I enabled
the IPv4 is required for this connection check box along with changing
the BSSID to a clone of the router's MAC address in hopes it was a
compatibility issue with the newer IPv6 Internet Protocol architecture
in an attempt to basically 'force' the machine to get that digital
handshake with the router in a more 'legacy' mode with IPv4, at least to
get some connection. That worked for a bit as well, but didn't hold up
just like before.

I am now sitting here at my computer, still experiencing this issue on
and off, currently having the issue stabilized and stalled at the moment
with the IPv4 is required for this connection check box on, NO BSSID
set, NO cloned MAC address, and NO Restrict to Device settings opted-
in, hoping this time around this combination of settings will work, but
it's a game of trial-and-error for me at this point now, like mentioned
before.

Has anyone else experienced such terrible connectivity issues only in
Debian-based distributions recently? I have been using Linux for ages
now and I feel as if this issue is now just arising within the past
year, 2014.

A HardInfo report generated from my computer is attached to this bug
report. I hope we can figure out a solution soon to get pushed to all
Debian and Debian-like distros soon! Nobody wants a bad connection.

[Bug 1388279] [NEW] suspend hangs when unloading module

2014-10-31 Thread Jürgen
Public bug reported:

a few user report problems after upgrading to 14.10. After resume or supend the
touchpad is dead.
un-reloading hid_multitouch solves the issue.

however putting the module name into 00sleep_modules prevents sleep mode
(computer hangs)
(making a typing error like hid_modu and it works again)

Unfortunately I have no clue how to get more detailed information

2014-10-31 Thread Walter Lapchynski
i have no problem doing this in 14.10. i'm loading up 14.04.1 to see if
i have this problem and will report back.

here's what i did:
1. ran xwininfo
2. clicked on a lxterminal
3. minimized the lxterminal
4. opened another lxterminal
5. ran xdotool key --window WINDOWID ctrl+r (the window key is in hex so
0xsomething)
6. maximized the original lxterminal
7. found that it was trying to a reverse search in bash, which is what ctrl+r
does

[Bug 1339820] Re: Preventing fraudulent flash memory

2014-10-31 Thread Jeb E.
It **is** valid. If enough testing is done on these fake, unauthorized
chipsets, the easier it will be for an instant fake or broken status
to pop up on the screen to alert the user before continuing, bringing
education of fake NAND/FLASH memory to the publics' eyes and hopefully
alarming OEMs to crack down on these fake chipsets harming their brands.
The more information in the database (with consent of the users, of
course), the better and quicker. And adding the BadBlacks program and
list of faulty chipsets will even further improve reliability of
catching a bad chipset before it's too late.

Im going to run the back end and set it up with MySQL and see if it still has
the issue. If so, I'll go into the database and see what is up there.

[Bug 1048792] Re: org.freedesktop.Dbus error while trying to erase USB key with Startup disk creator

I was able to get around this problem by executing usb-creator-gtk using
the following command:

sudo usb-creator-gtk --allow-system-internal

Be careful that you choose the correct device to erase, but this should
be a viable workaround until a fix is found.

[Bug 886321] Re: Upstart issue and mythbackend

2014-10-31 Thread GeeMac
I created the database for the backend using PHPMyAdmin and loaded the tables
in via the backend. That went pretty smooth as it usually does. I rebooted
the system and still got roughly the same message. Just the process numbers
were different.
I did not think setting up the database would make any difference , but I
figured I would set it up since the backend log was showing no connection.
Just looked at the log again and still the same as #33.

While I was watching the C compilation going on on my 8 cores, I noticed
the following differences n the CPU usage reported by top. In kernel
3.16 all gcc instances (actually cc1) are using 25%, but with 3.13 they
are all between 97 or 99%.

Looks like a scheduler bug of some sort.

[Bug 1388276] Re: 14.10 about 2 to 3 times slower to perform concurrent tasks

2014-10-31 Thread Emmanuel Stapf [ES]
I had the idea to downgrade the kernel to 3.13 (i.e. the latest kernel
from the 14.04 release) and now I get the proper timing for the C tasks:

with gcc 4.9: 497.400u 11.065s 1:43.49 491.3% 0+0k 191184+175312io 542pf+0w
with gcc 4.8: 487.047u 12.155s 1:45.83 471.6% 0+0k 26304+172720io 411pf+0w

I'm also checking the longer task and will report shortly if it comes
back to a decent time.

Re: [Mythbuntu-bugs] [Bug 886321] Re: Upstart issue and mythbackend

2014-10-31 Thread Thomas Mashos
Ok, is there anything in /var/log/mythtv/mythbackend.log
On Oct 31, 2014 4:55 PM, GeeMac htpc2...@live.com wrote:

I created the database for the backend using PHPMyAdmin and loaded the
tables in via the backend. That went pretty smooth as it usually does. I
rebooted the system and still got roughly the same message. Just the
 process numbers were different.
I did not think setting up the database would make any difference , but I
figured I would set it up since the backend log was showing no connection.
Just looked at the log again and still the same as #33.

Strange problem with the backend during upstart on Ubuntu oneiric: the

[Bug 1388276] Re: 14.10 about 2 to 3 times slower to perform concurrent tasks

2014-10-31 Thread Ubuntu Foundations Team Bug Bot
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. It seems that your bug report is not filed about a
specific source package though, rather it is just filed against Ubuntu
in general. It is important that bug reports be filed about source
packages so that people interested in the package can find the bugs
about it. You can find some hints about determining what package your
bug might be about at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage.
You might also ask for help in the #ubuntu-bugs irc channel on Freenode.

To change the source package that this bug is filed about visit
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/1388276/+editstatus and add the
package name in the text box next to the word Package.

[This is an automated message. I apologize if it reached you
inappropriately; please just reply to this message indicating so.]

[Bug 460743] Re: 0a12:0001 Cambridge Silicon Radio Bluetooth Dongle not working

2014-10-31 Thread Jeb E.
I'm getting similar issues again with my current Bluetooth dongle...
Ubuntu, Debian, and Linux Mint all recognize it now, but the connection

and if they do, the files usually time out mid-transmission.

[Bug 1388289] [NEW] apport doesn't tell the name of the binary or package which crashed before privileges are gained

2014-10-31 Thread Karl-Philipp Richter
Public bug reported:

This is annoying e.g.

  * if you just want to skip the error as fast as possible (e.g. after reboot
into a mainline kernel which caused a dkms to fail in dpkg and you know that
you don't want to report this because you checked the logs evaluated the
problem to be unsolvable due to changes in kernel API). There's no sense to
require privileges to give the opportunity to get past the Ubunu experienced a
problem dialog - make that Ubuntu experienced a problem with package or
binary name here
  * if you're used to a bunch of error messages at system start[1] and to
click, let's say, five times on cancel in the Ubuntu experienced a problem
dialog, you might more easily click one time too often than if the dialog tells
you the name (proposal for text change see above)

[Bug 1388294] [NEW] [MIR] geoclue-2.0

2014-10-31 Thread Jackson Doak
Public bug reported:

Availability:

geoclue-2.0 is built and available on all current architectures in vivid

Rational:

geoclue-2.0 is the current supported release of geoclue. Due to the
difficulty of transitioning all packages to the new release, geoclue 1
is in a separate source package (already in main). Version 2.0 is now
required by a number of gnome components in main, so it would be nice if
we didn't have to carry revert patches.

Security:

No CVEs, active upstream, the unsupport versedion is in ubuntu already

Quality assurance:

No bugs found in debian or ubuntu for this source package (23 minor bugs
for the version already in main). Active debian maintainer.

Dependencies:

All dependancies are in main

Maintenance:

Package is well maintained in debian and the ubuntu-gnome team will
maintain it in ubuntu

Background information:

GeoClue is a D-Bus geoinformation service. The goal of the Geoclue
project is to make creating location-aware applications as simple as
possible.
