@ Sebastian Bacher: I found an existing bug report about this problem at Gnome Bugzilla, and I added my comment to it: https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=745968 The report and the latest comment are a year and a half old, but the bug is marked as new. [Bug 1631560] [NEW] Narrow spacing of icons in Files affects file names
Public bug reported: When I upgraded to Ubuntu 16.10 beta a few days ago, horizontal distance between icons in Files and on the desktop got much smaller. Because of this there's less room horizontally for the file names, and many words got their last letters cut off to the next row. In many file names full rows now alternate with rows of only a couple of cut off letters. Name fields with longer file names also look disproportionately narrow and tall now. I think the spacing should be changed back to what it was, or at least it should be user selectable. [Bug 1160289] Re: Google earth search does not zoom onto a location
I'd like to add to madvinegar's instruction that to make the script executable in graphical user interface, you need to start nautilus with root privileges with 'gksu nautilus' (you have to give that command in the terminal). 'Sudo nautilus' doesn't seem to work properly, at least not for me. If you don't have gksu installed, you can find it in Ubuntu Software Center. I'm not an expert, but this worked for me. Perhaps it would be a good idea include madvinegar's solution to the Google Earth installation instruction in help.ubuntu.com, or some other fitting place, as a large part of the users may suffer from this bug. It might be good to adjust it a little to make it more approachable for users with little command line experience. [Bug 880043] [NEW] VLC, headphones, surround sound: front channels missing
Public bug reported: I have a recent problem with VLC video player and surround sound (at least when listened to with head phones). Until recently, when I used VLC to watch a video which has surround sound (5.1), the sound was automatically mixed so that it sounded right with my headphones. Now the front channel information seems to be missing, as most of the sound appears to be coming from behind. For example, when a person who is in the front speaks, the sound is weak and it comes from the back, echoing, and is also muted. I have tried all the sound settings available at the upper panel, but couldn't get any improvement. The setting "analog stereo output" gives the best results (the ones described above). Sound settings in VLC don't help either. Sources with stereo sound (videos or sound files) work normally. [Bug 662869] [NEW] Evolution starts as if it was the first time (with settings wizard)
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: evolution When I start Evolution, it behaves as if it was the first time, and presents the settings wizard, although I've been using the program for a long time now. When I start Evolution from the command line, the message "EI: MAIL PREFS" is shown. Update: When I started a new Ubuntu session, and changed the language from Finnish to English, the command line showed the following, more verbose message: ** (evolution:2545): CRITICAL **: categories_icon_theme_hack: assertion `filename != NULL && *filename != '\0'' failed EI: MAIL PREFS I can't tell if there's anything missing from the .evolution folder, but at least my messages seem to be there, and also the config folder with a bunch of configuration files. I'm using Ubuntu version 10.10 (64-bit), to which I upgraded from 10.04 about a week before the problem came up. Evolution version number is 2.30.3-1ubuntu7. File system check says everything's OK. Somewhere around when this happened I temporarily run out of disk space, but took care of that almost immediately. I'm not sure about timing, so there may have been plenty of time between these two incidents. Bug #327503 has similar symptoms, but probably different origin. ** Affects: evolution (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Tags: wizard -- Evolution starts as if it was the first time (with settings wizard) https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/662869 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 582903] Re: nautilus search doesn't work as described in help
Yes, I can confirm what Pedro says, but I'm not quite happy. You see, after installing Tracker I now get often hundreds of search results for a simple search in Nautilus, when I for example search for a single file using some character string on it's name. I may know that there's only one file with that specific string in it's name, but unfortunately the string often exists inside quite a many of the tens of thousands of documents in my home folder. The apparent reason for this bahaviour is that after installing Tracker Nautilus is using it for searching. There seems to be no way in Nautilus to change how the search is done. You can tell Tracker not to index contents of the files at all, but you can't choose to search for file contents only when you need to. Although not high priority, the error in the Nautilus help shouldn't be difficult to fix. -- nautilus search doesn't work as described in help https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/582903 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 133417] Re: Need a way to tag files in Nautilus using Tracker
I'd like to add to this, that it only seems possible in Tracker to tag files that come up as a search result. At least I have found no way in Tracker to go through all my files one by one, folder by folder, and tag them. It's easy to see that this makes tagging in Tracker impractical and haphazard for most use cases. Because there's no practical way to tag files in Nautilus either, there doesn't seem to be no usable way to have a tag-based file organization in Ubuntu - which I wouldn't have expected, when I a week ago decided to create one for me! :-/ -- Need a way to tag files in Nautilus using Tracker https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/133417 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 137527] Re: Totem should notify users about installing libdvdread3 and libdvdcss2 to read encrypted DVD
I have to say I'm astonished that in 9.10, the eleventh version of Ubuntu, when a user tries to play a movie DVD, he's greeted with "Error occured, unable to read from the resource", instead of at least being given a pointer to the right help page. (The wrong help page would be the "Totem movie player manual", which is the first result you get (in Karmic) when you search with the word "dvd" in the Help). The right result, "Music, videos and photos", comes up seventh). I appreciate the difficulty to create a seamless user experience with media and codecs (on which a lot of great work has been done already), but at least we should lead the user forward to the next step. The further goal should be for example to let the user click a couple of OKs, be warned of possible legal aspects with understandable language and have the necessary codecs and other packages installed automatically. -- Totem should notify users about installing libdvdread3 and libdvdcss2 to read encrypted DVD https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/137527 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 450000] [NEW] [Karmic] Available refresh rates named wrong in display settings
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: xorg Driver: Nvidia 185 Graphics card: Nvidia Geforce 8800 GT, Nvidia Geforce GTX 275 Monitor: Hitachi CM823F 21" CRT, 19" CRT Expected behaviour: Open the regular display configuration tool (not the one supplied by Nvidia) and have reasonable refresh rate options available for my monitor, which can handle 90 Hz @ 1600x1200. Typical options might be something like 90, 85, 75, 70, 65 and 60 Hz. Also expect the selected refresh rate and the one the monitor is using to be the same. What happened: Opened the regular display configuration tool, and found that available refresh rate options were seemingly very low. When I actually tried them, the refresh rates were different from what the numbers suggested. Here are the presented numbers on the left column and the actual refresh rates on the right: 64 60 63 65 62 70 61 75 60 85 59 90 Steps to repeat: - Go to System -> Settings -> Display - In Display Settings, open the drop-down list - Observe the available refresh rate options. If the bug manifests, they are too small. - Compare the selected refresh rate with the actual refresh rate of your monitor. If the bug manifests, they are not the same and the rate goes smaller when you choose a larger one. [Bug 422780] Re: nvidia settings ignored on reboot.
I have two systems with the Nvidia 185 driver installed, and both have this problem of settings disappearing, when done with the supplied Nvidia display configuration tool. The problem is nothing new - I remember having it in a couple of previous Ubuntu versions. The settings indeed stay when I use the regular display configuration tool. That isn't free of problems either, though. The available refresh rates aren't normal: 64, 63, 62, 61, 60 and 59 Hz. Those aren't real, however. When I choose the smallest one, I actually get 90 Hz (which is good for my CRT monitor). The largest, 64 Hz actually gives 65 Hz. Many users probably will try the largest number (if they aren't already scared away when they see the strange numbers) and then give up. But I think I'll make a separate bug report of this issue. I might add that I got 1920x1200 to work in the same computer with Ubuntu 8.10 (Intrepid). This was also the highest available option in the display settings. Uninstalling Nvidia 173 didn't bring 1920x1200 back, so the system is now stuck with 1600x1200 as the highest setting available. [Bug 117132] Re: Firefox ignores gnome theme's specific menu bar text color
I too would very much like to have the menu font colour changed to white. The black one is almost undreadable and most applications seem to consistently go with white - even VLC, which isn't a native GTK application. The more I use New Wave, the more I like it. The incompatible menu font colour is the only (and not so small) negative thing that comes to my mind. Hopefully this can be fixed to 9.40. I had the same problem on Intrepid Ibex. I did a complete uninstallation, but the problem persisted (because for some reason the configuration file wasn't removed). Because Wormux crashed immediately, I couldn't use the graphical interface to change settings. Luckily I stumbled upon this bug report :-) Lack of ~/.local or ~/.local/share wasn't the cause of the problem for me, as those directories are present in my system. [Bug 220072] Re: [Hardy] Internet connection cutting off intermittently
No no no, I'm using DHCP, which means automatic configuration - the exact opposite to manual configuration. Don't let those greyed out ip- numbers mislead you, they are there just because when I configured my ADSL device, I had to temporarily set a fixed ip address to be able to control the ADSL device. When I went back to DHCP (automatic), Network Manager left the fixed ip number visible (greyed out), probably just in case I would need them again (which is clever), but they *are not in use*. You can try this yourself by first setting an ip address manually - try with 123.123.123.123 - and then changing back to DHCP (or roaming - it doesn't matter). You can see the address 123.123.123.123 still there, but greyed out. Then you can test your connection: it works! Either you have succesfully connected to 123.123.123.123, or the address isn't being used (the answer is that it isn't being used - because the NM is using DHCP and ignoring the ip-address). The difference between "Roaming mode" and "DHCP" is that roaming mode is constantly scanning for available networks. So roaming mode is meant for travel use and wireless connections, when you may change network often (hence the word "roaming"). There is no need for roaming mode on your desktop PC at home with wired connection (you may use it if you want, but there is no need). It may mislead you that for some reason Ubuntu defaults to roaming mode even for fixed installations. If you would like to know more about this, you could start by googling "ubuntu roaming dhcp". It's not possible to tell yet if I have found a bug in Ubuntu or not. Certainly it is too early to mark the report invalid. I'll try the ping trick that you suggested and come back when I have found out something. -- [Hardy] Internet connection cutting off intermittently https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/220072 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Thomas, I'm sorry that I didn't express myself clearly. I don't know if I use UPnP for my internet connection or not. I only remotely know what UPnP means. [Bug 220072] Re: [Hardy] Internet connection cutting off intermittently
I don't know what role UPnP might have in this, but my Internet connection is definitely working (when not cutting off), and the connection method is DHCP. This has been going on for a few weeks now and a complete re-installation didn't help. [Bug 190536] [NEW] Clicking with mouse not working right in Hardy
Public bug reported: Mouse clicking has begun to work wrong for me in Hardy. Problems may not start immediately after booting the system, but something soon triggers the wrong behaviour. Here are some symptoms: Nautilus: -Clicking or double clicking on a file does nothing. -Clicking on a file of folder with the right mouse button has the same effect as clicking on the empty space between them. -A file can be selected by dragging a square around it, but clicking behaviour is still the same as above. -F2 (for renaming a file) often doesn't work when a file is selected by dragging a square around it. -Ctrl+C doesn't work. Upper panel: -Left clicking on a menu header opens the menu, but it collapses when the button is released. Menu items can be selected though by keeping the mouse button down all the time and moving the cursor onto the desired item. Submenus open when the cursor is kept over them for a moment. -Left clicking or double clicking on panel shortcuts does nothing. Right clicking on them brings up the context menu, if the mouse button is kept down. When the button is released, the menu disappears. -An exeption to above are the shortcuts for the deskbar applet, transmission and the clock/calendar, which do work. Lower panel: -Left clicking on programs brings them up normally, but right clicking brings up the context menu only if the mouse button is kept down. Evolution: -Clicking on a message on the message list opens the message instead of selecting it. Canorus and KWord (KDE) -Menus don't open at all (a very short flash can be seen though) All applications: -Left clicking on a word selects the word instead of placing the cursor. Double clicking selects the row instead of the word. Buttons on the toolbars do work. There are similar symptoms in other applications as well. I checked that mouse is technically OK. I'm pretty sure that the problems started after I installed the updates of 8th of february. Mouse settings in Nautilus and system settings seem normal to me. The mouse is a relatively new Logitech USB mouse. ** Affects: ubuntu Importance: Undecided Status: New -- Clicking with mouse not working right in Hardy https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/190536 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 190129] Re: screen resolution reset at maximum resolution at login
This just started to happen to me too with the updates of 8th or 9th of february. The current wrong resolution after booting is 1900 x 1200 for both the login screen and the desktop. My monitor is a 21" CRT, for which 4:3 is the right aspect ratio. I normally use a resolution of 1400 x 1050 or 1600 x 1200, depending on what I do. The driver I use is NV. BTW, the resolution of the login screen also used to be correct in my system. At least when I used the Nvidia driver for a while ago, the resolution was the same for the login screen and the desktop. [Bug 161775] [needs-packaging] GREYCstoration (gimp plugin)
Public bug reported: This is an effective image noice remover, which can be used both stand- alone and as a Gimp plugin. Plugin doesn't work at least on the 64-bit version of Gutsy. I tried to compile the stand-alone version, but without success (might be because I don't know much about such things). GREYCstoration doesn't seem to be packaged for Debian either. The software is licenced under CeCILL free software licence, which according to the GREYCstoration web page is compatible with GPL: http://www.cecill.info/licences/Licence_CeCILL_V2-en.html The source code can be found here: http://www.greyc.ensicaen.fr/~dtschump/greycstoration/download.html I think GREYCstoration would be a valuable addition to Ubuntu repositories, as there currently doesn't seem to be any effective image noise remover available. [Bug 139027] Re: Screens & Graphics not setting correct resolution
I'm not quite sure if my bug is the same as reported here, but I let others decide. To begin with, when I start my computer, the monitor goes off soon after the grub menu and comes back on just before the login screen. This happens with the live CD too, and prevents me from checking the installation CD for defects (the checking seems to happen, but I'm not able to see the result). The problem was present already on my earlier Gutsy installation (started perhaps two weeks ago), but I thought it might be because of the experiments I had made with the Nvidia driver (from the Nvidia web site). The monitor doesn't cause the problem, because I tried with another one and got same behaviour. This is a step by step description of my observations after the installation was finished: Login screen refresh rate was at 60 Hz and the screen was vertically stretched (not exceeding the screen edges). Desktop resolution was at 1280 x 768, which means that the desktop was vertically stretched (my monitor being a regular 21" CRT). Refresh rate was 60 Hz. Graphics card was detected right ("NVIDIA Geforce 8800 Series"). The monitor was not detected. The description was "Custom 1". I changed monitor model to "Sony GDM-f500/f500t9", which allowed me to select a resolution of 1400 x 1050 and a refresh rate of 85 Hz in "Screen and graphics preferences". A message "All users must log out for changes to take effect" (my translation from Finnish) appeared. I closed the message window to take notes. When I re-opened it, all resolution options above 1280 x 1024 had disappeared. The only available refresh rate was 60 Hz. The selection I made for the monitor ("Sony GDM-f500/f500t9") was still there. I selected the resolution 1280 x 960, which worked at 60Hz refresh rate. Next I logged out. After logging back in and opening "Screen and graphics preferences", nothing had changed, except that 85 Hz was added as a second option for refresh rate (so now there were 60 Hz and 85 Hz). I selected 85 Hz and it worked. Still no resolutions available above 1280 x 1024. I decided to reboot and see what that would do. The desktop resolution changed from 1280 x 960 to 1280 x 768 and the refresh rate to 60 Hz (the option for 85 Hz disappeared) without my intervention (other than rebooting). The long list of available resolutions came back though, and I tried to select 1400 x 1050. The resolution changed to something else than that. I would guess 1280 x 1024, because ther were black margins on the right and left edges of the screen, but the desktop wasn't malformed (the "Screen and graphics preferences" and "Screen resolution" kept showing 1400 x 1050). Now the refresh rate option of 85 Hz was back again, and I selected it to see what would happen. It worked and the screen resolution went to 1400 x 1050, which it was supposed to be. Next I rebooted again to see if things would be stable now. Unfortunately not. The resolution was back in 1280 x 768 (vertically stretched) and refresh rate at 60 Hz (the only option). Here I thought that it's time to make a bug report :-) Well, I had to log out once more to change the system language to English to find the right names for the settings windows. When I logged back in, the resolution was 1920 x 1200 and refresh rate 73 Hz (60 Hz being the only other option). My monitor is not a wide screen model. I made one more try for 1600 x 1200 @ 85Hz, which is one of the settings on the modelines, but that didn't work. And this is where I am now. I didn't have these problems with the nv driver on my Tribe 5 installation. My monitor: Sony GDM-F500 21" CRT 30 - 121kHz, 48 - 160Hz 1880 x 1440 @ 80Hz My graphics card: Leadtek GeForce 8800 GTS 320Mb ** Attachment added: "xorg.conf" http://launchpadlibrarian.net/9833237/xorg.conf -- Screens & Graphics not setting correct resolution https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/139027 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 139723] "Screen & Graphics" mixes horizontal and vertical scan rate
Public bug reported: The new screen and graphics preferences tool in Gutsy has some names and values mixed up. When you click the "model" button, a window with a list of monitor manufacturers and models opens. At the bottom of the window two values are presented: horizontal range and vertical refresh rate. These two are mixed with each other, eg. horizontal range shows the value of the vertical refresh rate and the other way round. This seems to be the case with all the monitors listed. The word "vertical" also lacks the letter "c". At least in my system these values are presented right in xorg.conf, so perhaps this is just a layout error of the "screen and graphics" with no affect on the graphics system? ** Affects: ubuntu Importance: Undecided Status: New -- "Screen & Graphics" mixes horizontal and vertical scan rate https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/139723 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Hopefully gutsy will get an update withing > a few days (why it wasn't done when updating the drivers escapes me) As you said it's a shame that it has taken so long to fix this bug. A working Linux 3D driver for the GeForce 8000 series has been available at least from early March this year. As it has been known for long now, the bug isn't in the driver, but in the packaging. This bug has caused Ubuntu a lot of bad press. When reviewers using a GeForce 8000 series graphics card have tried to enable the much anticipated desktop effects, they have found themselves stairing at the command line instead. Then they write that Ubuntu is buggy. Ofcourse it's not just about the reviewers, but everyone who have this popular graphics card in their machine. The next wave of problems is perhaps to be expected when those who have managed to install the driver from the Nvidia web site start to upgrade their system to Gutsy.
