Interestingly, with the kernel 4.10.0-14 that I just upgraded to the
boot doesn't go to loop. With the kernel 4.10.0-13 it still does.

2017-03-25 Thread Ari Torhamo
Public bug reported:

Got a message of a problem with the package "libertine" during the
upgrade from Ubuntu Gnome 16.10 to 17.04 final beta, but the upgrade was
finished anyway. This automated error report seems to think it was a
fresh install, but it was an upgrade. I don't know if it's related, but
after the upgrade the boot goes to loop with the latest available kernel
4.10.0-13, but boots normally with 4.8.0-41 (which I'm using now). The
last point of the loop is Stopping User Manager for UID 121...

[Bug 788626] Re: Error: Unable to save resume file: File name too long

2017-02-22 Thread Ari Torhamo
I'm experiencing this on Ubuntu 16.10. The file system is non-encrypted.

Thanks Felix Moreno for the "crappy" solution to get around the problem.
It seems to work fine. I didn't see the solution offered in any any
other discussions that I read around the web.

[Bug 1631560] Re: Narrow spacing of icons in Files affects file names

2016-10-16 Thread Ari Torhamo
@ Sebastian Bacher: I found an existing bug report about this problem at Gnome
Bugzilla, and I added my comment to it:
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=745968
The report and the latest comment are a year and a half old, but the bug is
marked as new. I guess it's better not to expect a quick patch.

@ dino99: Thanks for the workaround, dino99. It alleviated the problem
somewhat. It would help more if I'd decrease the font size further, but
the text would get too small then.

[Bug 1631560] [NEW] Narrow spacing of icons in Files affects file names

2016-10-07 Thread Ari Torhamo
Public bug reported:

When I upgraded to Ubuntu 16.10 beta a few days ago, horizontal distance
between icons in Files and on the desktop got much smaller. Because of
this there's less room horizontally for the file names, and many words
got their last letters cut off to the next row. In many file names full
rows now alternate with rows of only a couple of cut off letters. Name
fields with longer file names also look disproportionately narrow and
tall now. I think the spacing should be changed back to what it was, or
at least it should be user selectable.

[Bug 1562948] Re: google-earth not working - broken package with Xenial Xerus

2016-04-22 Thread Ari Torhamo
@ Cip Man

Your installation instruction worked for me on Ubuntu 16.04, thank you.
Your solution for the Africa problem worked for a couple of searches,
but now every search takes me to Africa again. Giving the sed command
again doesn't help. Quickly looking everything else seems to work fine.
Any ideas? Running Google Earth from the terminal gives the following
error messages:

[Bug 1160289] Re: Google earth search does not zoom onto a location

2016-01-16 Thread Ari Torhamo
I'd like to add to madvinegar's instruction that to make the script
executable in graphical user interface, you need to start nautilus with
root privileges with 'gksu nautilus' (you have to give that command in
the terminal). 'Sudo nautilus' doesn't seem to work properly, at least
not for me. If you don't have gksu installed, you can find it in Ubuntu
Software Center. I'm not an expert, but this worked for me.

Perhaps it would be a good idea include madvinegar's solution to the
Google Earth installation instruction in help.ubuntu.com, or some other
fitting place, as a large part of the users may suffer from this bug. It
might be good to adjust it a little to make it more approachable for
users with little command line experience. I hesitate to do it myself,
as I'm not so well versed myself.

2015-11-17 Thread Ari Torhamo
I have experienced this bug as long as I can remember, years anyway. My
hardware has changed completely during that time, but the bug stays :-)

I haven't let send the automatic bug report often, because I have
thought that sending too many of them annoys the developers. Would it be
better to send them all, or perhaps one every week or couple so that the
developers know that the bug still exists ?

I'm using 15.10 now, and currently the crash happens at every boot.

[Bug 1480924] [NEW] fglrx-core 2:15.200-0ubuntu4.1: fglrx-core kernel module failed to build

2015-08-03 Thread Ari Torhamo
Public bug reported:

I changed the graphics card of my computer from Nvidia to Ati. I changed
the driver from proprietary Nvidia to Nouveau before changing the card.
After putting in the Ati card, there were no displaydrivers available in
Additional Drivers. Because of this, I used Software Center to install
fglrx driver. Something seems to have gone wrong with the installation,
because automatic error reporting was triggered. Software Center says
fxlrx is installed.

[Bug 861064] Re: mbox account needs better initial settings

2011-10-23 Thread Ari Torhamo
It seems that I might be suffering from the same problem. After
upgrading to Ubuntu 11.10, the only account visible in Evolution is
"me"@localhost, when it should be "me"@gmail.com. The old messages were
imported to this localhost account during the upgrade, but I'm not able
to receive any messages any more. Everything seems normal in the
Evolution settings. I don't know if it's related, but Evolution has two
items in "default applications" selection. Selecting one or the other
doesn't seem to affect anything though.

I wouldn't mind getting some help to solve this problem, as currently I
have to send and read email through Gmail web interface, which I find
very unpleasant to use. So, how do I get my "me"@gmail account back,
visible and working again? Thanks.

[Bug 880043] [NEW] VLC, headphones, surround sound: front channels missing

2011-10-22 Thread Ari Torhamo
Public bug reported:

I have a recent problem with VLC video player and surround sound (at
least when listened to with head phones). Until recently, when I used
VLC to watch a video which has surround sound (5.1), the sound was
automatically mixed so that it sounded right with my headphones. Now the
front channel information seems to be missing, as most of the sound
appears to be coming from behind. For example, when a person who is in
the front speaks, the sound is weak and it comes from the back, echoing,
and is also muted. I have tried all the sound settings available at the
upper panel, but couldn't get any improvement. The setting "analog
stereo output" gives the best results (the ones described above). Sound
settings in VLC don't help either.

Sources with stereo sound (videos or sound files) work normally.

The problem started around the time I upgraded to Ubuntu 11.10, but I'm
not sure about the exact moment, as I didn't watch any videos around the
time of doing the upgrade.

Surround sound works normally with Totem and Gnome Mplayer

[Bug 334125] Re: Search not showing hidden files

2011-06-11 Thread Ari Torhamo
I just spent quite a lot of time searching for my .evolution folder (it
has changed place in Ubuntu 11.04) with Nautilus search. I searched for
"nautilus", ".nautilus", "mail", "mbox" etc. until I moved to Google,
wondering where else the .evolution folder could be than in my home
floder. A half an hour later I found out that Nautilus search can't see
hidden files. Then I read that the bug has been open for over four
years. Aaaarghhh.

Later I remembered that I have faced this bug before, but I had
forgotten it. I wonder if I'm going to forget it again, and after a few
years desperately searching for some hidden file that I know should be
there...

Sorry for the unhelpful message.

[Bug 372727] Re: [Jaunty] Resolution 1920x1200 not available after installing Nvidia driver 173

2011-05-13 Thread Ari Torhamo
Unfortunately I haven't noticed any messages that may have been sent to
me afterJune 2009 concerning this bug report. I don't currently have an
access to the computer which the report is about. That may change later,
and in that case I will update this report. Thanks!

[Bug 768275] Re: Compiz effects slow and laggy on Natty with ATI card

2011-05-01 Thread Ari Torhamo
I tried the instructions linked by "bagl0312" (comment #5), and things
got quite a lot faster for me too. I didn't remove the xorg.conf file
though. I wonder if it's safe to remove it, and does removing affect
anything else than (possibly) performance?

[Bug 365140] Re: Evolution displays folder as unread even though all mail in it is read

2010-11-01 Thread Ari Torhamo
I'm experiencing this all the time now. When I move a read message from
my inbox to another folder, this other folder begins to show one unread
message. When I open the folder, all the messages are shown as read (the
subject lines are not shown with bold font). When I do "mark as read",
nothing changes, but when I first mark the message as unread and then
read, then the folder stops showing unread messages.

I just noticed, that the problem doesn't affect every message, but I
don't know yet what makes some messages affected and some not. I'll try
to figure that out

I have faced this problem a few times during the recent years with
Evolution, but for the couple of last days it's been happening more than
on those previous times.

Ubuntu: 10.10
Evolution: 2.30.3

[Bug 662869] Re: Evolution starts as if it was the first time (with settings wizard)

2010-10-19 Thread Ari Torhamo
Gedit is what I used to open %gconf.xml. I tried Less too (now), but it
didn't find any more information.

Gconf-editor shows a list of value names and values (21):

- "accounts" key has no value (there's a small square where the value should be)
- "default_account" key shows a string of numbers and my machine name
- "save_dir" key refers to a hard disk that I removed two months ago
- "signatures" key says "signature name="Created automatically"" [my
translation from Finnish] followed by a string of numbers and my machine name
- other values don't seem to have any obvious connection to me or my system

[Bug 662869] [NEW] Evolution starts as if it was the first time (with settings wizard)

2010-10-18 Thread Ari Torhamo
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evolution

When I start Evolution, it behaves as if it was the first time, and
presents the settings wizard, although I've been using the program for a
long time now. When I start Evolution from the command line, the message
"EI: MAIL PREFS" is shown. Update: When I started a new Ubuntu session,
and changed the language from Finnish to English, the command line
showed the following, more verbose message:

** (evolution:2545): CRITICAL **: categories_icon_theme_hack: assertion
`filename != NULL && *filename != '\0'' failed
EI: MAIL PREFS

I can't tell if there's anything missing from the .evolution folder, but
at least my messages seem to be there, and also the config folder with a
bunch of configuration files.

I'm using Ubuntu version 10.10 (64-bit), to which I upgraded from 10.04
about a week before the problem came up. Evolution version number is
2.30.3-1ubuntu7. File system check says everything's OK.

Somewhere around when this happened I temporarily run out of disk space,
but took care of that almost immediately. I'm not sure about timing, so
there may have been plenty of time between these two incidents.

Bug #327503 has similar symptoms, but probably different origin.

[Bug 582903] Re: nautilus search doesn't work as described in help

2010-07-03 Thread Ari Torhamo
Yes, I can confirm what Pedro says, but I'm not quite happy. You see,
after installing Tracker I now get often hundreds of search results for
a simple search in Nautilus, when I for example search for a single file
using some character string on it's name. I may know that there's only
one file with that specific string in it's name, but unfortunately the
string often exists inside quite a many of the tens of thousands of
documents in my home folder. The apparent reason for this bahaviour is
that after installing Tracker Nautilus is using it for searching.

There seems to be no way in Nautilus to change how the search is done.
You can tell Tracker not to index contents of the files at all, but you
can't choose to search for file contents only when you need to.

Although not high priority, the error in the Nautilus help shouldn't be
difficult to fix.

[Bug 133417] Re: Need a way to tag files in Nautilus using Tracker

2010-07-03 Thread Ari Torhamo
I'd like to add to this, that it only seems possible in Tracker to tag
files that come up as a search result. At least I have found no way in
Tracker to go through all my files one by one, folder by folder, and tag
them. It's easy to see that this makes tagging in Tracker impractical
and haphazard for most use cases. Because there's no practical way to
tag files in Nautilus either, there doesn't seem to be no usable way to
have a tag-based file organization in Ubuntu - which I wouldn't have
expected, when I a week ago decided to create one for me! :-/

[Bug 516412] Re: Pressing causes X to freeze

2010-02-13 Thread Ari Torhamo
I was affected by this bug. Pressing Enter at any time forward from the
login screen froze the system. No Ubuntu logo was visible during the
boot, but there was a blue and white progress bar at the bottom of the
screen.

Removing plymouth fixed the bug (removed it in Synaptic, not in safe mode)
- reinstalling plymouth brought the problem back
- removed plymouth again, and the bug is now gone
(removing plymouth made the system freeze at shut down - had to reset)

[Bug 137527] Re: Totem should notify users about installing libdvdread3 and libdvdcss2 to read encrypted DVD

2009-11-01 Thread Ari Torhamo
I have to say I'm astonished that in 9.10, the eleventh version of
Ubuntu, when a user tries to play a movie DVD, he's greeted with "Error
occured, unable to read from the resource", instead of at least being
given a pointer to the right help page. (The wrong help page would be
the "Totem movie player manual", which is the first result you get (in
Karmic) when you search with the word "dvd" in the Help). The right
result, "Music, videos and photos", comes up seventh). I appreciate the
difficulty to create a seamless user experience with media and codecs
(on which a lot of great work has been done already), but at least we
should lead the user forward to the next step. The further goal should
be for example to let the user click a couple of OKs, be warned of
possible legal aspects with understandable language and have the
necessary codecs and other packages installed automatically.

[Bug 454107] [NEW] [Karmic] Unable to format new unformatted Corsair 16 GB USB drive

2009-10-17 Thread Ari Torhamo
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-disk-utility

I tried to format a new unformated Corsair Flash Voyager 16 GB USB drive
in Ubuntu Karmic beta with Palimpsest Disk Utility (gnome-disk-utility),
but the tool wasn't able to handle the task. Palimpsest saw the drive
space as unallocated, except 1 kb (if I remember the size right), which
was shown as unknown partition. When I tried to format the unallocated
space, I got the following error message:

After several attempts I tried to format the drive in Windows 7 to FAT32
(to know if the drive is faulty), which went fine. Windows' formatting
tool saw the whole drive as unallocated (no 1 kb unknown partition).
After this, Karmic was able to reformat the drive to ext4.

This happened a week ago, and I have updated my system since then
(attached system information may not be completely relevant). The system
was up to date when the problem occurred.

[Bug 450000] [NEW] [Karmic] Available refresh rates named wrong in display settings

2009-10-12 Thread Ari Torhamo
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

Driver: Nvidia 185
Graphics card: Nvidia Geforce 8800 GT, Nvidia Geforce GTX 275
Monitor: Hitachi CM823F 21" CRT, 19" CRT

Expected behaviour:
Open the regular display configuration tool (not the one supplied by Nvidia)
and have reasonable refresh rate options available for my monitor, which can
handle 90 Hz @ 1600x1200. Typical options might be something like 90, 85, 75,
70, 65 and 60 Hz. Also expect the selected refresh rate and the one the monitor
is using to be the same.

What happened:
Opened the regular display configuration tool, and found that available refresh
rate options were seemingly very low. When I actually tried them, the refresh
rates were different from what the numbers suggested. Here are the presented
numbers on the left column and the actual refresh rates on the right:

64 60
63 65
62 70
61 75
60 85
59 90

Steps to repeat:
 - Go to System -> Settings -> Display
 - In Display Settings, open the drop-down list
 - Observe the available refresh rate options. If the bug manifests, they are
too small.
 - Compare the selected refresh rate with the actual refresh rate of your
monitor. If the bug manifests, they are not the same and the rate goes smaller
when you choose a larger one.

[Bug 422780] Re: nvidia settings ignored on reboot.

I have two systems with the Nvidia 185 driver installed, and both have
this problem of settings disappearing, when done with the supplied
Nvidia display configuration tool. The problem is nothing new - I
remember having it in a couple of previous Ubuntu versions.

The settings indeed stay when I use the regular display configuration
tool. That isn't free of problems either, though. The available refresh
rates aren't normal: 64, 63, 62, 61, 60 and 59 Hz. Those aren't real,
however. When I choose the smallest one, I actually get 90 Hz (which is
good for my CRT monitor). The largest, 64 Hz actually gives 65 Hz. Many
users probably will try the largest number (if they aren't already
scared away when they see the strange numbers) and then give up. But I
think I'll make a separate bug report of this issue.

Hardware involved:
Graphics cards Nvidia Geforce 8800 GT and Nvidia Geforce GTX 275
CRT monitors Hitachi CM823F 21" and another one of 19"

[Bug 440945] Re: [Karmic] Not prompted to install Flash plugin in Firefox

[Bug 440945] [NEW] [Karmic] Not prompted to install Flash plugin in Firefox

2009-10-02 Thread Ari Torhamo
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: firefox-3.5

Expected behaviour:
Start Firefox web browser for the first time. Open a web page with some flash
content. Get a prompt in Firefox to install flash plug-in.

Observed behaviour:
Started Firefox web browser for the first time. Opened a web page with some
flash content. No prompt to install flash plug-in came up. Tried several times
with different web pages.

Steps to repeat:
1. Start Firefox when there's no Flash plug-in installed
2. Open a web page with Flash content
3. Observe if the prompt to install Flash plug-in appears.

[Bug 372727] Re: [Jaunty] Resolution 1920x1200 not available after installing Nvidia driver 173

2009-05-06 Thread Ari Torhamo
I might add that I got 1920x1200 to work in the same computer with
Ubuntu 8.10 (Intrepid). There was some hassle, perhaps changing between
the drivers a couple of times and a couple of reboots, but no tweaking
of xorg.conf, etc.

There probably is no connection, but Windows doesn't get the resolution
right either. There the desktop is too wide to fit into the display
area, part of it being left outside, although the driver (latest, from
Nividia web site) says that the resolution is set to 1920x1200.

[Bug 372727] [NEW] [Jaunty] Resolution 1920x1200 not available after installing Nvidia driver 173

2009-05-06 Thread Ari Torhamo
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

I installed Ubuntu 9.04 (Jaunty) to a PC that has a 24" LG W2452T monitor and
an Nvidia Geforce FX 5200 graphics card. After the installation the resolution
of
the monitor was set correctly to the native 1920x1200.
After installing the proprietary driver Nividia 173, resolution was changed to
1600x1200. This was also the highest available option in the display settings.
Uninstalling Nvidia 173 didn't bring 1920x1200 back, so the system is now stuck
with 1600x1200 as the highest setting available.

[Bug 117132] Re: Firefox ignores gnome theme's specific menu bar text color

2009-04-09 Thread Ari Torhamo
I too would very much like to have the menu font colour changed to
white. The black one is almost undreadable and most applications seem to
consistently go with white - even VLC, which isn't a native GTK
application. The more I use New Wave, the more I like it. The
incompatible menu font colour is the only (and not so small) negative
thing that comes to my mind. Hopefully this can be fixed to 9.40.

Thanks to everyone who's working on this :-)

[Bug 269590] Re: Wormux doesn't start after having selected the "look for updates" option

2009-01-01 Thread Ari Torhamo
I had the same problem on Intrepid Ibex. I did a complete
uninstallation, but the problem persisted (because for some reason the
configuration file wasn't removed). Because Wormux crashed immediately,
I couldn't use the graphical interface to change settings. Luckily I
stumbled upon this bug report :-) Lack of ~/.local or ~/.local/share
wasn't the cause of the problem for me, as those directories are present
in my system. It was disabling "look for updates" that stopped the
crashing.

[Bug 299459] Re: Unable to maximize all windows

2008-12-30 Thread Ari Torhamo
I used to have this problem with my previous Intrepid installation
(beta). I'm not sure what made the problem disappear, but perhaps it was
the change of driver. Now this problem occurs on an installation which I
made for someone else a couple of days ago. I have access (not instant)
to the computer in question, if more information is needed, but I have
to do a new installation there soon, because there's a problem with the
video playback too (probably not related to this).

[Bug 234228] Re: [needs-packaging] Rubyripper

2008-09-11 Thread Ari Torhamo
It would be very nice indeed to have Rubyripper in the repositories. The
Windows equivalent, EAC (Exact Audio Copy), is very popular, and it
seems tha for many it's one of the few programs keeping them booting to
Windows. It's important to notice the difference between these tools and
other rippers. Rubyripper and EAC aim to do an exact bit by bit copy of
the CD to be ripped, and they have refined mechanisms that other rippers
lack to make this happen.

[Bug 220072] Re: [Hardy] Internet connection cutting off intermittently

2008-04-22 Thread Ari Torhamo
No no no, I'm using DHCP, which means automatic configuration - the
exact opposite to manual configuration. Don't let those greyed out ip-
numbers mislead you, they are there just because when I configured my
ADSL device, I had to temporarily set a fixed ip address to be able to
control the ADSL device. When I went back to DHCP (automatic), Network
Manager left the fixed ip number visible (greyed out), probably just in
case I would need them again (which is clever), but they *are not in
use*. You can try this yourself by first setting an ip address manually
- try with 123.123.123.123 - and then changing back to DHCP (or roaming
- it doesn't matter). You can see the address 123.123.123.123 still
there, but greyed out. Then you can test your connection: it works!
Either you have succesfully connected to 123.123.123.123, or the address
isn't being used (the answer is that it isn't being used - because the
NM is using DHCP and ignoring the ip-address).

The difference between "Roaming mode" and "DHCP" is that roaming mode is
constantly scanning for available networks. So roaming mode is meant for
travel use and wireless connections, when you may change network often
(hence the word "roaming"). There is no need for roaming mode on your
desktop PC at home with wired connection (you may use it if you want,
but there is no need). It may mislead you that for some reason Ubuntu
defaults to roaming mode even for fixed installations. If you would like
to know more about this, you could start by googling "ubuntu roaming
dhcp".

It's not possible to tell yet if I have found a bug in Ubuntu or not.
Certainly it is too early to mark the report invalid. I'll try the ping
trick that you suggested and come back when I have found out something.

2008-04-22 Thread Ari Torhamo
Thomas, I'm sorry that I didn't express myself clearly. I don't know if

[Bug 220072] Re: [Hardy] Internet connection cutting off intermittently

2008-04-21 Thread Ari Torhamo
I don't know what role UPnP might have in this, but my Internet
connection is definitely working (when not cutting off), and the
connection method is DHCP. I think when an ADSL connection is made with
DHCP, one is always supposed to leave the "default gateway" blank, I
remember doing so for years - even when I was still using Windows. The
manual of my ADSL device also tells to "remove all gateways".

[Bug 220072] [NEW] [Hardy] Internet connection cutting off intermittently

2008-04-20 Thread Ari Torhamo
Public bug reported:

My Internet connection is cutting off every now and then in Hardy. I can
get it back by rebooting, or changing from DHCP to fixed IP and then
back. I don't know exactly how long it takes until the connection cuts
off, and it seems to vary, but it's often been something like two to
five hours. This has been going on for a few weeks now and a complete
re-installation didn't help. I didn't report this earlier, because I
thought the problem was with the DSL device, but when I bought a new one
(a speed upgrade), the problem stayed.

Ubuntu version is Hardy with the latest updates.
My motherboard is Asus A8N-SLI Deluxe (Nforce 4), and I'm using Nvidia's own
built in network controller (wired).

[Bug 190536] Re: Clicking with mouse not working right in Hardy

2008-02-14 Thread Ari Torhamo
188351 may be the same bug. If I would have seen that one, when I
searched for an existing report, I might have just left a comment there.
It's good to note, though, that the description of 188351 (mouse will
only double click) lacks much of the contradicting (with the
description) symptoms that I had. Contradicting parts from my report:

Nautilus:
-Clicking or double clicking on a file does nothing.
-Clicking on a file of folder with the right mouse button has the same effect
as clicking on the empty space between them.
-F2 (for renaming a file) often doesn't work when a file is selected by
dragging a square around it.
-Ctrl+C doesn't work.

Upper panel:
-Left clicking or double clicking on panel shortcuts does nothing.

Lower panel:
-Left clicking on programs brings them up normally, but right clicking brings
up the context menu only if the mouse button is kept down. (If the mouse was
only double clicking, a left click would leave programs minimized on the panel).

[Bug 190536] [NEW] Clicking with mouse not working right in Hardy

2008-02-09 Thread Ari Torhamo
Public bug reported:

Mouse clicking has begun to work wrong for me in Hardy. Problems may not
start immediately after booting the system, but something soon triggers
the wrong behaviour. Here are some symptoms:

Nautilus:
-Clicking or double clicking on a file does nothing.
-Clicking on a file of folder with the right mouse button has the same effect
as clicking on the empty space between them.
-A file can be selected by dragging a square around it, but clicking behaviour
is still the same as above.
-F2 (for renaming a file) often doesn't work when a file is selected by
dragging a square around it.
-Ctrl+C doesn't work.

Upper panel:
-Left clicking on a menu header opens the menu, but it collapses when the
button is released. Menu items can be selected though by keeping the mouse
button down all the time and moving the cursor onto the desired item. Submenus
open when the cursor is kept over them for a moment.
-Left clicking or double clicking on panel shortcuts does nothing. Right
clicking on them brings up the context menu, if the mouse button is kept down.
When the button is released, the menu disappears.
-An exeption to above are the shortcuts for the deskbar applet, transmission
and the clock/calendar, which do work.

Lower panel:
-Left clicking on programs brings them up normally, but right clicking brings
up the context menu only if the mouse button is kept down.

Evolution:
-Clicking on a message on the message list opens the message instead of
selecting it.

Canorus and KWord (KDE)
-Menus don't open at all (a very short flash can be seen though)

All applications:
-Left clicking on a word selects the word instead of placing the cursor. Double
clicking selects the row instead of the word. Buttons on the toolbars do work.

There are similar symptoms in other applications as well.

I checked that mouse is technically OK. I'm pretty sure that the
problems started after I installed the updates of 8th of february. Mouse
settings in Nautilus and system settings seem normal to me. The mouse is
a relatively new Logitech USB mouse.

[Bug 190129] Re: screen resolution reset at maximum resolution at login

2008-02-09 Thread Ari Torhamo
This just started to happen to me too with the updates of 8th or 9th of
february. The current wrong resolution after booting is 1900 x 1200 for
both the login screen and the desktop. My monitor is a 21" CRT, for
which 4:3 is the right aspect ratio. I normally use a resolution of 1400
x 1050 or 1600 x 1200, depending on what I do. The driver I use is NV.

BTW, the resolution of the login screen also used to be correct in my
system. At least when I used the Nvidia driver for a while ago, the
resolution was the same for the login screen and the desktop. This
doesn't necessarily have anything to do with the bug in question, but
thought to mention it to you Dzamir.

[Bug 182165] Re: Hardy - gnome-keybinding-properties shortcuts don't work

2008-02-07 Thread Ari Torhamo
All of the actual multimedia keys work for me now.

It would be great to have the issue with the fourth 'preset' key solved
though. I just did some further testing and noticed that this key works
flawlessly in Windows. The 'preset' keys from one to three also work in
Ubuntu regardless of which keyboard I select in the keyboard settings,
be it a multimedia, laptop, generic, Apple or any old keyboard from any
manufacturer. I propably should make a separate report of this one
though. Anyone else have the fourth 'preset' key not working? My
keyboard is the keyboard part of the Logitech Cordless Desktop Comfort
Laser combo.

[Bug 182165] Re: Hardy - gnome-keybinding-properties shortcuts don't work

2008-02-07 Thread Ari Torhamo
Those media keys, which weren't working for me before, started to work
with the latest updates (which became available between yesterday
evening and this morning). It's funny though, that after the update I'm
no longer not able to assign a key to open my home folder - the same
thing that some others here already brought up. Oh, and the fourth of
the user selectable 'preset' keys doesn't work either - it probably
didn't work before either, but I'm not sure about that. So, everything
else but these two things seem to work. I didn't go through every single
item on the list, fro example I supposed that if 'move a window to work
space 1' works, then it works with other workspaces too.

[Bug 30123] Re: simpler grub reinstallation

2007-12-06 Thread Ari Torhamo
A lot of people are continuously looking for help with this matter around the
internet. Too often the instructions they get are partial, false, or not
working for some other reason. It's not rare to see people to be told to
reinstall Ubuntu, because it's easier that way! Take a look at here what it's
like:
http://ubuntuforums.org/archive/index.php/t-24113.html

This is not a minor problem. People face this always when they reinstall
Windows without reinstalling Ubuntu at the same time (and Windows
typically has to be reinstalled every now and then). A one click (or
otherwise simple) option for reinstalling grub is definitely needed.
Please please code wizards, give us this feature!

[Bug 161775] [needs-packaging] GREYCstoration (gimp plugin)

2007-11-09 Thread Ari Torhamo
Public bug reported:

This is an effective image noice remover, which can be used both stand-
alone and as a Gimp plugin. Plugin doesn't work at least on the 64-bit
version of Gutsy. I tried to compile the stand-alone version, but
without success (might be because I don't know much about such things).
GREYCstoration doesn't seem to be packaged for Debian either.

The software is licenced under CeCILL free software licence, which according to
the GREYCstoration web page is compatible with GPL:
http://www.cecill.info/licences/Licence_CeCILL_V2-en.html

The source code can be found here:
http://www.greyc.ensicaen.fr/~dtschump/greycstoration/download.html

I think GREYCstoration would be a valuable addition to Ubuntu
repositories, as there currently doesn't seem to be any effective image

[Bug 139027] Re: Screens & Graphics not setting correct resolution

2007-10-05 Thread Ari Torhamo
I'm not quite sure if my bug is the same as reported here, but I let
others decide.

To begin with, when I start my computer, the monitor goes off soon after
the grub menu and comes back on just before the login screen. This
happens with the live CD too, and prevents me from checking the
installation CD for defects (the checking seems to happen, but I'm not
able to see the result). The problem was present already on my earlier
Gutsy installation (started perhaps two weeks ago), but I thought it
might be because of the experiments I had made with the Nvidia driver
(from the Nvidia web site). The monitor doesn't cause the problem,
because I tried with another one and got same behaviour.

This is a step by step description of my observations after the
installation was finished:

Login screen refresh rate was at 60 Hz and the screen was vertically
stretched (not exceeding the screen edges).

Desktop resolution was at 1280 x 768, which means that the desktop was
vertically stretched (my monitor being a regular 21" CRT). Refresh rate
was 60 Hz.

Graphics card was detected right ("NVIDIA Geforce 8800 Series").

The monitor was not detected. The description was "Custom 1".

I changed monitor model to "Sony GDM-f500/f500t9", which allowed me to
select a resolution of 1400 x 1050 and a refresh rate of 85 Hz in
"Screen and graphics preferences". A message "All users must log out for
changes to take effect" (my translation from Finnish) appeared. I closed
the message window to take notes. When I re-opened it, all resolution
options above 1280 x 1024 had disappeared. The only available refresh
rate was 60 Hz. The selection I made for the monitor ("Sony
GDM-f500/f500t9") was still there. I selected the resolution 1280 x 960,
which worked at 60Hz refresh rate.

Next I logged out. After logging back in and opening "Screen and
graphics preferences", nothing had changed, except that 85 Hz was added
as a second option for refresh rate (so now there were 60 Hz and 85 Hz).
I selected 85 Hz and it worked. Still no resolutions available above
1280 x 1024.

I decided to reboot and see what that would do. The desktop resolution
changed from 1280 x 960 to 1280 x 768 and the refresh rate to 60 Hz (the
option for 85 Hz disappeared) without my intervention (other than
rebooting). The long list of available resolutions came back though, and
I tried to select 1400 x 1050. The resolution changed to something else
than that. I would guess 1280 x 1024, because ther were black margins on
the right and left edges of the screen, but the desktop wasn't malformed
(the "Screen and graphics preferences" and "Screen resolution" kept
showing 1400 x 1050). Now the refresh rate option of 85 Hz was back
again, and I selected it to see what would happen. It worked and the
screen resolution went to 1400 x 1050, which it was supposed to be.

Next I rebooted again to see if things would be stable now.
Unfortunately not. The resolution was back in 1280 x 768 (vertically
stretched) and refresh rate at 60 Hz (the only option). Here I thought
that it's time to make a bug report :-) Well, I had to log out once more
to change the system language to English to find the right names for the
settings windows. When I logged back in, the resolution was 1920 x 1200
and refresh rate 73 Hz (60 Hz being the only other option). My monitor
is not a wide screen model. I made one more try for 1600 x 1200 @ 85Hz,
which is one of the settings on the modelines, but that didn't work. And
this is where I am now.

I didn't have these problems with the nv driver on my Tribe 5
installation.

My monitor: Sony GDM-F500 21" CRT
30 - 121kHz, 48 - 160Hz
1880 x 1440 @ 80Hz

My graphics card: Leadtek GeForce 8800 GTS 320Mb

[Bug 136267] Re: flashplayer-nonfree requires manual work on gutsy amd64

2007-09-15 Thread Ari Torhamo
For me it was enough to install nspluginwrapper and then flashplugin-
nonfree - both simply from the repositories - and now I've got
FlashPlayer 9 working in Gutsy 64-bit. I didn't copy or extract anything
anywhere. Ofcourse it would be good if one had to install just
flashplugin itself and let the system to take care of the rest.

[Bug 139723] Re: "Screen & Graphics" mixes horizontal and vertical scan rate

2007-09-14 Thread Ari Torhamo
It came to my mind to add that it might be better to change the places
of the values instead of the names, because it's the common way to tell
the horizontal value first. I don't know, but perhaps changing the
places of the names would affect the translations too.

[Bug 139723] "Screen & Graphics" mixes horizontal and vertical scan rate

2007-09-14 Thread Ari Torhamo
Public bug reported:

The new screen and graphics preferences tool in Gutsy has some names and
values mixed up. When you click the "model" button, a window with a list
of monitor manufacturers and models opens. At the bottom of the window
two values are presented: horizontal range and vertical refresh rate.
These two are mixed with each other, eg. horizontal range shows the
value of the vertical refresh rate and the other way round. This seems
to be the case with all the monitors listed.

The word "vertical" also lacks the letter "c".

At least in my system these values are presented right in xorg.conf, so
perhaps this is just a layout error of the "screen and graphics" with no
affect on the graphics system?

[Bug 48412] Re: Disk detected as unallocated

2007-09-02 Thread Ari Torhamo
I'm trying to install Gutsy Tribe 5, but I also have this problem with
partitions. Neither GParted or the installer partitioner (I suppose they
are different nowadays?) can see them. Fdisk lists the partitions
normally, and I can see them in Device Manager. I can acces the
partitions normally from my current installation and the Gutsy Live CD
- I have no problems reaching the contents of any of my partitions in
any situation. It's just that GParted and the installer partitioner
can't see them.

Fdisk output:

Levy /dev/sda: 250.0 Gt, 250059350016 tavua

As you said it's a shame that it has taken so long to fix this bug. A
working Linux 3D driver for the GeForce 8000 series has been available
at least from early March this year. As it has been known for long now,
the bug isn't in the driver, but in the packaging.

This bug has caused Ubuntu a lot of bad press. When reviewers using a
GeForce 8000 series graphics card have tried to enable the much
anticipated desktop effects, they have found themselves stairing at the
command line instead. Then they write that Ubuntu is buggy. Ofcourse
it's not just about the reviewers, but everyone who have this popular
graphics card in their machine. The next wave of problems is perhaps to
be expected when those who have managed to install the driver from the
Nvidia web site start to upgrade their system to Gutsy.

I can't avoid thinking that someone has greatly underestimated the
significance of this bug.

[Bug 91556] Re: Edgy and Feisty don't work with nVidia GeForce 8800 GTS and 8800 GTX

2007-04-07 Thread Ari Torhamo
Nv driver works for me now and installation is fine. Have you redabour
tried to install from alternate CD? That way you propably would be able
to get a working system with the command line and see the installation
logs. I'm not sure which logs would be the most helpfull, but no doubt
others here would be able to tell.

My problem now is the nvidia-glx driver, which doesn't work for me. I made a
separate bug report about it:
