[Bug 538895] [NEW] No line-in/mic capture Realtek ALC883

2010-03-14 Thread Reuben Bailey
Public bug reported:

This bug is similar to the following, but affects the REALTek ALC883 chip set.
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/alsa-driver/+bug/523953
In brief: before adding the line "options snd-hda-intel power_save=0
power_save_controller=N position_fix=1 enable=yes" to my
/etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf file, I could hear sound from the mic and
line-in jacks through my speakers and control it with the GNOME-alsamixer (both
muting and volume) but I could not record that sound stream with any software.
Adding the position fix seems to have done the trick.
Please let me know if you need more info that is provided below.
All the best,
Reuben

[Bug 467278] Re: South African English Dictionary still missing lots of words

2010-02-12 Thread Dwayne Bailey
This patch fixes the en_ZA.aff file in older Ubuntu versions. I based
this on an old CVS checkout from OOo and the latest affix files from
http://extensions.services.openoffice.org/project/dict-en_ZA

Alternatively you could patch out both en_ZA.dic and en_ZA.aff with the
files in the above extension.

[Bug 286312] Re: apt-cacher refuses to pass kickstart configuration files

2009-12-07 Thread Jim Bailey
Have you tried adding it as a regexp in /etc/apt-cacher/apt-cacher.conf
there is a section (repated below) that should make it trivial.

# Permitted package files - this is a perl regular expression which matches all
# package-type files (files that are uniquely identified by their filename).
# The default is:
#package_files_regexp =
(?:\.deb|\.rpm|\.dsc|\.tar\.gz|\.diff\.gz|\.udeb|index\.db-.+\.gz|\.jigdo|\.template)$

[Bug 436340] Re: Installer fails: grub fails on Intel ICH10 raid

2009-10-14 Thread Jim Bailey
Thanks for the reply Felix,

it doesn't help me but at least I understand some of the reasoning
behind this. I guess karmic gets a thumbs down from me based on this
regression alone. At lot of people installing Karmic for the first
time, are going to get the hump when there install fails at the last
hurdle. I wonder if the possibility of using grub1 can be included in
the installer.

[Bug 436340] Re: Installer fails: grub fails on Intel ICH10 raid

2009-10-13 Thread Jim Bailey
Not an good idea for me I have a reasonably high end Windows Vista
install on another partition I use the raid for. This is something that
need fixing pre-release, most ASUS high end gamer boards have this kind
Raid and I believe most of the Biostar and ECM boards.

What I really need to see is someone from the grub2 team to triage this
bug but with 137 and counting open bugs against grub2 and 2 weeks to
release I am quite worried.

[Bug 419793] [NEW] undefined symbols: translate_ascii_strcase_equal

2009-08-27 Thread Dwayne Bailey
Public bug reported:

libtranslate is used by Virtaal as a plugin to provide machine
translations. If this plugin is enabled on Ubuntu then you will get
this error:

"/usr/lib/libtranslate/modules/generic.so":
/usr/lib/libtranslate/modules/generic.so: undefined symbol:

virtaal uses libtranslate using ctypes.

I suspect that the error is related to one patched on Fedora, see:

this point if I need to open fresh bug for a set of interdependent

[Bug 212441] Re: Mediatomb Init Script not working : upnp error -117

2009-07-24 Thread Richard Bailey
Unfortunately the workaround proposed in the mediatomb faq no longer
works on Jaunty as detailed by comment #4.

I also tried setting eth0 in the interface file and tried removing network
manager and tried moving mediatomb to start after NetworkManager in rc2 (the
apparent default runlevel) but none of those worked.
I also tried a script with a sleep of 60 seconds then it would restart
mediatomb and that also didn't work.

I wanted to emulate the behaviour of the ntp daemon which seems to start
with the network. On further investigation I found the directories if-
up.d and if-down.d in /etc/network which contain scripts that run when
the network comes up and goes down respectively.

Emulating a line from the ntp script I created two scripts for
mediatomb. The one in if-up.d executes:

invoke-rc.d mediatomb restart

and in if-down.d it executes:

invoke-rc.d mediatomb stop

After I rebooted my machine mediatomb now starts up automatically with
the network.

I'm attaching a tar archive with the two scripts, you can cd to
/etc/network and untar the archive there.

Last thing, the links in the rcX directories are now pointless so I
removed mine by executing:

sudo update-rc.d -f mediatomb remove

And finally, you can always check /var/log/mediatomb.log for details on
if mediatomb is running.

[Bug 335993] Re: [Jaunty 9.04 alpha5] DeprecationWarning: when starting Hellanzb

2009-04-21 Thread Mark Bailey
The patch from http://www.hellanzb.com/trac/hellanzb/ticket/419 is bad and
breaks hellanzb in Jaunty (simply does not work).
It treats hashlib.md5 as a drop in replacement for the old md5 lib which it is
not, causing an AttributeError when it attempts to call md5.new()

[Bug 293424] Re: intrepid: iwl3945 won't connect with WEP passphrase

2009-01-21 Thread Mike Bailey
I am experiencing the same issue. My home wireless network is D-Link
router 802.11G. My ubuntu Laptop is a Lennovo R61i ThinkPad. The
wireless driver is iwl3945. I have successfully used this laptop on open
wireless networks and WPA secure networks at a local coffee house with
no issues. However when I try to employ WEP 128-bit passphrase the
setting flips to 40/128 bit key with my passphrase modified to a hex
value.

I too have an Apple Powerbook I have ran on this wireless network for
well over a year using the WEP 128-bit passphrase encryption scheme with
no issues.

[Bug 319110] [NEW] Update list of translation services

2009-01-19 Thread Dwayne Bailey
Public bug reported:

I prepared patches to update libtranslate for Fedora. This updates
Google, might even fix bug 124287, refreshes a few others and adds some
new services.

This is the consolidated patch:

review each individually, See the attachments to the bug:

[Bug 271962] Re: VT-switching from X returns you to X the first time

2008-12-31 Thread Reed Bailey
Have:
Linux home4 2.6.27-11-generic #1 SMP Fri Dec 19 16:29:52 UTC 2008 i686 GNU/Linux
Intrepid V8.10

I also confirm this bug.

Additionally:
Unexpected additional behavior, can't imagine it being correct.
After doing Ctrl+Alt+F2 twice to get login prompt I login normally; do my work
with schroot; exit chroot by typing "exit"; then exit tty session by typing
"exit"; I am immediately returned to GNOME/tty7; shouldn't I be at tty2 with
prompt for login?

Yikes, from user perspective this appears login is broken (Coulson
20081104). Us geeks will deal with it, but layperson business owner will
_emotionally_ not like appearance that employee user sessions are
insecure (there is confidential business information some employees
should not see that is at another's desktop).

I don't know what files you want/need. Please advise and I will
duplicate error and send files.

[Bug 296073] Re: All News Bins empty after program start

2008-12-22 Thread Reed Bailey
This bug is repaired as of Liferea V1.4.19.
See:
http://sourceforge.net/tracker/?func=detail&group_id=87005&atid=581684&aid=2457165
  Thank you llando/Lars

Additional Information: YMMV
Installing a newer Liferea version from, for example: http://blog.getdeb.net/
may help you.
See also: http://liferea.sourceforge.net/
Installation of V1.4.23 _did solve_ problem of new items added to News Bin
disappearing on Liferea restart.
Installation of V1.4.23 _did not solve_ problem of "deletion" of News Bin items
on upgrade. These items are apparently permanently lost. (this is not a
compliant of any kind against maintainer, just statement of information so
others can make informed choices about what to do; so others don't have to
repeat my work)
V1.4.23 seems to work a-okay for me.

This bug can now be closed.

[Bug 296073] Re: All News Bins empty after program start

2008-12-21 Thread Reed Bailey
Upgraded from Gutsy V7.10 to Intrepid V8.10 (via Hardy).
All V7.10 News Bins present in V8.10 (Liferea 1.4.18)
All News Bins V8.10 _empty_.

Can additionally confirm original bug (Frank), in lieu of create new
News Bin, using any existing News Bin; same behavior as original bug.

Does any one have an idea if this is an Ubuntu issue or Liferea issue?

[Bug 264468] [NEW] GNOME desktop brightness automatically dimmed at startup

2008-09-03 Thread Phill Bailey
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-power-manager

Please see also http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=5716361

Currently there are a number of disgruntled users whose displays are set to be
dimmed at boot, including myself, who are seeking a solution to stop this
dimming at boot.
Power Management preferences used to have an option to set the brightness at
boot, which now seems to have disappeared. I've had a look through gconf-editor
and according to the key /apps/gnome-power-manager/backlight/brightness_ac my
brightness is set to 100 at startup, however it is still 0% at boot according
to the brightness applet.

How do we boot up with 100% brightness?

As you will see from the forum thread, it's a variety of graphics cards and
laptops which are affected.
Personally I am using gnome-power-manager 2.22.1-1ubuntu4 on Ubuntu 8.04

Thanks,
Phill Bailey

[Bug 250093] Re: popen does not work bidirectionally in lInux

2008-07-19 Thread Jeff Bailey
This is functionality beyond what's required by posix:

http://www.opengroup.org/onlinepubs/009695399/functions/popen.html

So for portability, programs are going to need to cope with this anyway.

For a portable solution, see the glibc manual:

[Bug 219897] Re: package sun-java6-plugin 6-06-0ubuntu1 failed to install/upgrade

2008-07-09 Thread Phill Bailey
This isn't actually an issue any more. I restored my Gutsy backup and
then later installed Hardy from CD, rather than through update-manager,
and haven't had any problems. So therefore it's not the same install
that had the issue and so this bug report is possibly null and void now,

[Bug 203527] Re: Clicking on clock applet hangs gnome-panel

2008-07-07 Thread Phill Bailey
I have found the same issue, however in my experience removing all
locations (of which I had only one) solved the problem to some extent.
There is still a short lag between clicking the clock and the calendar
appearing, during which time the Window list is also frozen, but the
calendar does appear, which was not the case before. I'm loathe to try
uninstalling Evolution, as the calendar in the panel is useful to have
easily at hand. I'm using Hardy and a fresh install from the 8.04 live
CD did not exhibit this issue, an update appears to have caused it.

[Bug 181812] Re: Execution of grub-install (hd0) failed

2008-05-21 Thread Darragh Bailey

I've encountered this problem with the released version of Ubuntu 8.04.

Specifically the line that appears as the error is: "grub-installer: The
file /boot/grub/stage1 not read correctly."

This appears in both of the attached syslog files. Also the error
appears even why trying to install grub manually.

I have attempted to install this both to the MBR and to the first
partition, using the full install and also running grub separately post
failed install. Note that in my case the hard drive involved is hd2 and
that Windows resides on hd0.

[Bug 230799] [NEW] Anagramarama causes video weirdness

2008-05-15 Thread Elijah Bailey
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: anagramarama

Expected behavior: Anagramarama will play nice with my computer. It
will not cause issues with my display.

Actual Result: Upon starting the anagramarama application the video goes
blank. It comes back, but if the application is left open, when my
screensaver comes on, the LCD flickers badly. This does not happen when
anagramarama is not left open.

I did not notice this issue before the purchase of the LCD, however, the
upgrade to hardy and the purchase of the lcd were on the same day.

I am using Hardy Heron - recently updated from Gutsy
I have an ATI Radeon HD 2600 Pro 512MB DDR2, PCI Express Video Card
I am using the fglrx proprietary ATI accelerated graphics driver that came with
hardy
I have a Samsung 245BW Lcd screen

Well, let's think this through for a sec. The goal is to have 32-bit
pointers to better use processor cache, but still use the enhanced
instructions and registers provided by the amd64 instructions. This
is off the top of my head without doing any research at all. That
means I've likely missed at least one step in here.

This is probably possible on the hardware, although I haven't looked
at it directly. Assuming it is:

You first need to define an ABI document describing what registers and
such would be used for calling conventions.

You then need to talk to the toolchain folks to get a GNU triple
assigned to this mode.

The kernel would have to be hacked to setup the address space
appropriately (make sure that the vDSO and such were located in low
enough memory).

Binutils would need hacking to understand that triple, and maybe some
tweaks to the assembler to check for invalid pointer sizes, and some
tweaks to the linker.

gcc would need hacking to restrict itself to a 32bit address space,
while teaching it about the additional registers and instructions.

Then you'd need to hack on glibc to make sure that it knew the triple
and would build. This would also mean hacking any custom asm files so
that they constrained themselves appropriately. There would probably
be some elf changes as well to match the ABI document.

After all this had happened, you'd then need to convince some distro
that enough people would care about cache lines and wanted the
additional performance so that they'd go through the hassle of
building this and QAing, etc. You'd also have to hack on any
multimedia libraries and crypto libraries to provide the optimised
versions to get decent performance.

I have a vague feeling that we've heard from the only person who
*actually* cares about this problem. Anyone else is probably using
ppc+altivec, sparc or some other arch where the 32 bit environment in
closer to what the 64 bit one provides.

Tks,
Jeff Bailey

[Bug 226037] Re: binutils 2.18 build failure on hardy

2008-05-03 Thread Jeff Bailey
If you can run makeinfo from the command line, then they problem doesn't
seem likely to be with Ubuntu. Check the config.log output and see what
it's trying to do that it can't detect makeinfo.

In any event, this certainly isn't a bug on binutils, so I'm going to
reject this for now. Feel free to open it against a different package
once you figure out from the log what's actually failing.

(BTW, Hardy includes a CVS snapshot of Binutils 2.18.1. Why are you
building your own copy?)

[Bug 90681] Re: resolv.conf overwritten using VPN/PPP etc...

2008-03-09 Thread Elijah Bailey
I am on Gutsy. When i connect to the office vpn my local dns and local
search entries which are set by my local DHCP Server disappear, the
remote nameservers have entries, but none of the remote search domains i
want are present unless i add them. (After disconnecting the original
settings are back.)

I agree with the comments that the /etc/resolv.conf file should contain
(or the option to have it contain) a merge of local and remote. I would
also like to see the option in the vpn setup to add search domains - my
office uses several because of acquisitions, and production network
separation projects.

[Bug 185263] Re: -mlong32 is an unknown option

The manpage isn't misleading in the sense that it's wrong in any way.
The manpage is misleading in that manpages such if they take more than a
page or two of screen real-estate.

The problem with him not reporting this bug is that you and I are now
stuck having this conversation, rather than the more reasonable case of
the person having the problem with me or one of the other toolchain
folks. I can't turn around to you and say "Tell me more about your
problem so that I can help come up with an appropriate answer within the
constraints of our resources" and get a meaningful answer. The fact
that Donald is a reporter who could actually meaningfully give input to
the question makes it that much more frustrating. =/

Please stop third-party relaying messages from people. All that's
happening is that we're reply to bug reports that the actual reporter

Even the full documentation section is under "MIPS Options".

While this would probably be a fascinating option for amd64 to grow
(ia64 has the option for an ILP32 mode on HP-UX, for instance), I
suspect that the likelyhood of desktop systems not having >4GB of Ram in
the near future is pretty slim (and certainly will be true by the time
toolchain, kernel, and system libraries would have the capability). For
servers, having more than 4GB is already reasonable and common.

If powerpc were actually getting that type of testing, these bugs
wouldn't be showing up. There's nothing about being a port that makes
it any harder to support. Community members are able to contribute to
the toolchain, the kernel, etc., as well as doing the testing.

What we really need on ppc is folks who are brave enough to run the
bleeding edge distros from nearly the beginning of the cycle and the
willingness to try and fix problems like these. The last set of us
doing this have largely switched from x86.

[Bug 176249] Grub ignores device.map when booting

2007-12-13 Thread Richard Bailey
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: grub

My system has 3 drives, 2 SATA drives that are sda & sdb and one IDE drive
that's hda. In my device.map file I did the following:
(hd0) /dev/sda
(hd1) /dev/sdb
(hd2) /dev/hda

Windows is installed on hda, but in my menu.lst I have to configure it
as if Windows is on (hd1), which tells me that grub is not reading the
settings from my device.map file.

Is this actually causing problems for you, or are you just wanting

there's actually a bug that someone is experiencing.

[Bug 174002] Re: asks termnal question on dapper->hardy upgrade

2007-12-09 Thread Jeff Bailey
Hmm. We haven't done this with debconf before, since debconf isn't
essential in Debian. However, I do notice that it's part of ubuntu-
minimal, so we can probably consider that tool here.

Do the dist-upgrader hints get through to someone on a server-based
installation? In practice the things that need to be restarted will
affect server users more than desktop users.

Otherwise, it looks like we dropped the patcht to the preinst to force
DEBIAN_FRONTEND to be noninteractive for glibc. If debconf and dist-
upgrader aren't solutions for us, we can just restore that hack.

[Bug 50722] Re: Memory problems on pthread_cancel()

2007-12-07 Thread Jeff Bailey

Umm, this isn't from glibc. Marking it as invalid. Please use dpkg -S
to figure out what package that comes from and file a bug against it.
Or try again against the system glibc. Nothing but madness can come
from running a third-party pthreads library.

[Bug 41454] Re: glibc isn't compiled with the system compiler

2007-09-09 Thread Jeff Bailey
We choose the compiler to do glibc based on a small pile of things,
including test results from the testsuite, speed, and features.
Sometimes it'll go ahead of the pack, sometimes it will trail behind.

The idea is that glibc is pretty much the one thing that if you get it
wrong, everything else breaks. Because of that we treat it specially.

Please note that this bug is still marked "invalid". If you'd like a
longer discussion on this, I suggest switching to a mailing list.

I am experiencing a similar problem after a power outage of my desktop.
I can not use fail safe also user created with the gnome user creation
tool work and lots of other stuff can not mess about too long as I have
deadlines from hell backing up and going for a reinstall.

Just want to add a desktop that can not survive random reboots and power
cycles of life hasn't really got a place in the office eco-system. IMHO
Gnome devs need to address this issue with some urgency.
