[Bug 852603] Re: Please backport hedgewars (0.9.16-1) from precise to oneiric

2011-11-19 Thread Derek
S.
0.9.17 release.
http://download.gna.org/hedgewars/hedgewars-src-0.9.17.tar.bz2

BTW, the server should build on Oneiric.

Dependencies here:
http://code.google.com/p/hedgewars/wiki/BuildingOnLinux

Can this just be renamed to 0.9.17? :)

[Bug 852603] Re: Please backport hedgewars (0.9.16-1) from precise to oneiric

2011-11-19 Thread Derek
Anything safe has been backported to the 0.9.16 repository branch
already in Hedgewars Mercurial. But that's a rather small subset of the
changes.

The problem is that virtually anything breaks network compatibility
since, to keep cheating in a FOSS game down, and to keep the network
protocol light, Hedgewars network play just relays moves.

As a result anything that even slightly alters the gameplay causes
network incompatibility. So, virtually every release has a network
protocol bump.

This is obviously a bit inconvenient for the Linux users who aren't on
PlayDeb. OSX users just get the update we push to the app store, and
Windows users just grab the new exe.

A surprising amount of time is spent telling Linux users the reason they
don't see anyone on the server is they are on a version that is 1-4
revisions out of date (anywhere from 3 months to 2 years old). Some can
use PlayDeb, others have to build from source.

The full ChangeLog is here.

2011-11-19 Thread Derek
Just as an example of just what can change network play. Changing one
pixel on one theme object requires a protocol bump, since a hog's
movements could be slightly changed.

[Bug 891852] [NEW] Unusable IP Information table and partial obstruction of Ping tab.

2011-11-17 Thread Derek White
Public bug reported:

The Devices' tab's IP Information table has only about 10px worth of
viewing space - making the window larger does not make the table bigger.
It is completely unusable.

Additionally, the default window size (which is not remembered between
launches) does not allow for the Ping tab's graph to be fully displayed
- even the legend gets cut off, let alone the graph it self. The Details
table also suffers the same issue as described above on the Devices tab.

2011-11-17 Thread Derek White
This last one is of the Ping tab, after 5 pings, with the Details
expanded. As you can see, there is a TON of wasted space. The graph does
expand with the window size; however, just like the IP Information table
(Devices tab), the Details table does not expand.

[Bug 890010] [NEW] Bottom-right resize window icon arbitrarily resizes window when clicked.

2011-11-13 Thread Derek White
Public bug reported:

Besides the new resize window icon interfering with the buddyicon...

After not using the new icon to resize (use top/left/right border or any
of the other 3 corners) when using it again, it arbitrarily resizes the
window as soon as the icon is clicked. Almost as if the window manager
looses track of the window size.

Video shows it all.

[Bug 890010] Re: Bottom-right resize window icon arbitrarily resizes window when clicked.

2011-11-13 Thread Derek White
This may be a gtk or some other under-lying element's issue, as I have
noticed the behavior on other applications; however, it is by far most
noticeable in Pidgin. Applications such as Firefox do exhibit the
behavior; however, they only resize by a few pixels (barely noticeable),
not hundreds of pixels like with Pidgin.

[Bug 864478] Re: Window shading is broken

2011-11-13 Thread Derek White
Found http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1870006 and it lead me to
the change log for '1:0.9.6+bzr20110929-0ubuntu6' in oneiric-proposed
(pre-released updates):

* Add some upstream missing bits from previous fixes:
- debian/patches/fix-864330.patch
- debian/patches/fix-864478.patch

A poster on the thread also reports that the oneiric-proposed version
DOES fix the issue for them. Seems like there was a slight problem with
the patch that has since been fixed.

[Bug 890041] [NEW] Untitle Document opens when opening a document using `gksu[do] gedit /path/to/file`.

2011-11-13 Thread Derek White
Public bug reported:

$ gedit # opens untitled document
$ gedit /path/to/file  # opens file
$ sudo gedit /path/to/file  # opens file
$ gksu gedit /path/to/file # opens file untitled document
$ gksudo gedit /path/to/file # opens file untitled document

The Untitled Document should only be opened when no file is provided,
according to `man gedit`.

Additionally, when Untitled Document is opened unexpectedly via
gksu[do], its tab icon is shown as the rotating loading icon.
Occasionally the icon will stop spinning, when the tab is focused/un-
focused it will continue spinning, until it freezes again. On the other
had, when I expect Untitled Document to be opened (e.g. `gedit`), its
tab icon is the proper plain-text icon.

[Bug 890054] [NEW] Ctrl+A does not select text when searching.

2011-11-13 Thread Derek White
Public bug reported:

[Bug 890055] [NEW] File properties information no longer expands to fit dialog.

2011-11-13 Thread Derek White
Public bug reported:

right-click Properties

In previous versions, the Name:, Location:, etc. fields would expand
to fit the window width.

Now, they are always truncated to about 50% of the dialog's default
width. See attached screen-shot.

This is a horrible usability problem and makes the Search (Ctrl-F)
feature almost useless - I cannot track down the file's location.

Either having the ability to see the full Location in the dialog or the
search results having an open containing folder context-menu option
would resolve this issue.

[Bug 886395] Re: Desktop icon's text no longer condenses when long.

2011-11-09 Thread Derek White
Keep Aligned was and is still turned on. In the first pic the icons
were as close together as keep aligned would let them be (0 icons worth
of space in between). In this new pic, the icons are separated by 1 icon

Further testing:
The text will eventually condense - I tripled the name of the second (from
left) icon and it did eventually condense.

However, not soon enough to make anything readable with the minimum
icon separation dictated by Keep Aligned. I expected it to condense
enough to not interfere with neighboring icons, but instead it did not
condense and did interfere.

[Bug 770283] Re: [fglrx]title bar does not update on non-maximized windows

2011-11-09 Thread Derek White
Happens in 11.10 Gnome Classic running compiz ATI 11.9 (fglrx 8.892).
Shaded windows still show their window decorations. Using
Ctrl+Alt+Shift+Left/Right to move windows between workspaces/viewports
is also broken - window just returns to the screen it started on.

Seems like window's got totally screwed over with the Unity re-
writes...and they still aren't addressing any issues they created even
after a second release. 7 months and only a tiny bit of triaging on
this...can't we even get a report this upstream/to compiz/to AMD or
we are dropping support for gnome classic, bugger off so we know you
are actively ignoring it, instead of passively ignoring it?

appears with another flash. This occurs whether or not the profile
indicates to hide the menubar or not.

[Bug 886392] [NEW] No way to Run in a terminal.

2011-11-04 Thread Derek White
Public bug reported:

Title says it all.

Alt-F2
sudo apt-get update

And, nothing happens. This is quite annoying. It is Run a command not
Run a GUI application.

If it doesn't open a terminal auto-magically, there should at the
least be a run in a terminal option as before.

Also, the Filter still shows up on this...Why? It does nothing, except
waste a third of the dialog's horizontal pixels when opened - there are
no filters.

[Bug 886393] [NEW] dconf-editor styling all messed up

2011-11-04 Thread Derek White
Public bug reported:

Description takes up 75% of screen real-estate (see screen-shot). Had to
go full-screen for it to semi-correct itself and be use-able.

Drop-down boxes use 100% of screen width (org.gnome.nautilus.window-
state side-pane-view) and the mouse button must be held down until a
selection is made (e.g. mousedown activates the drop-down, mouseup
selects entry and closes drop-down - very annoying to not be able to go
click, click).

No application menu? Weird.

All-in-all, just seems a lot sloppier than gconf-editor - first time in
it and I already found 2 usability issues with it. Bad underlying dev
tools for the app?

Here are some more shots, this time of apps indicators sound.

'sound1.png' is with interested-media-players selected and

fact, each time I click on a different key name, the description area
resizes (apparently) to a random size.

[Bug 844937] Re: gnome-shell crashed with SIGABRT in g_assertion_message()

2011-10-21 Thread Derek
I had the same thing happen to me.
I'd enabled (toggled the switch in gnome-shell-extensions) the user theme
extension, then rebooted.
Oh, I'd also installed the full gnome package which was why I was rebooting,
but I doubt that was it.

After reboot, was crashing, couldn't get it to recover, and of course
gnome-shell-extensions is only half functional if gnome-shell isn't
working.

In desperation I blew away ~/.gconf/desktop/gnome/shell and interface with the
user logged out.
That seemed to fix it.

[Bug 823615] Re: network-manager doesn't reconnect to wireless networks after rfkill soft blocks removed

2011-10-21 Thread Derek
Hm. This looks roughly like what I'm experiencing where if I uncheck
wifi in gnome-shell or XFCE4 (haven't tried in Unity yet) it is
permanently killed. XFCE4's network tool reports that the rf kill
switch has been used (not so, I just used the network gui).

Oddly, if I actually toggle the real physical rf kill switch, while
bluetooth goes on and off, wifi stays dead.

I have to reboot to recover.

Yes, I know not precisely the same machine/pattern, but still seems
related so just gonna watch this one to see what happens.

Right now, I just avoid disabling wireless as much as possible.

Oh. And was fine in Natty.

Re: [Bug 775188] System Monitor - does not display all CPUs

2011-10-20 Thread Derek
Hello Pedro,

This issue does not exist for me under Oneiric Ocelot on the live CD,
nor the full desktop installation. This only existed with Natty Narwhal.
The only change is that now it displays CPU1, CPU2, CPU3, and CPU4,
rather than the 0 to 3. Everything is working well with the system
monitor in the new version. Let me know if you would still like me to
test out the live CD for Natty, if you think that would help.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. The issue that you reported is one that should be
reproducible with the live environment of the Desktop CD of the stable
release - Oneiric Ocelot. It would help us greatly if you could test
with it so we can work on getting it fixed. You can find out more about
it at http://www.ubuntu.com/download . Thanks again and we appreciate
your help.

[Bug 873763] Re: menubar settings for new terminals are ignored in gnome-shell

2011-10-14 Thread Derek Monner
I see this behavior as well under Unity, even with global menus disabled
(i.e. I uninstalled indicator-appmenu). Even with the profile setting
Show menubar by default in new terminals unchecked, when I launch a
new gnome-terminal, the menubar is displayed. As Victor described, the
Show menubar option in the View menu is unchecked. If I check this
option (to show the menu) and then un-check it again, the menubar goes
away, but only for the current terminal. A menubar is again shown the
next time I start a terminal.

[Bug 852603] Re: Update to 0.9.16

FWIW we are going to try very hard to have a bug fix 0.9.17 release in a few

Minor release, but since it fixes a few issues in .16, it would break network

Sooo, given 11.10 release has gone ahead already, might be best to focus

Ubuntu 11.04 - unfortunately I can't use compiz-decorator since it calls the

look horrible on this graphics card and are slow to boot.

gtk-window-decorator at least is configurable from CCSM.

[Bug 852603] [NEW] Update to 0.9.16

2011-09-17 Thread Derek
Public bug reported:

0.9.16 is a major release involving many new changes:
http://hedgewars.org/node/3291

As with other releases, online play against older versions is not
possible, so it would be good for Ubuntu users to be updated as soon as
possible so they can play against Windows and OSX.

Hey. Just FYI, looks like either a rerelease of 0.9.16 or a 0.9.16.1 (probably
.1) will be out in a few minutes, sooo hang on :)

[Bug 772834] Re: Asus U43F with 11.04 freeze on suspend

2011-09-14 Thread Derek Pitman
I'm also having the same issue on an Asus A53E-based computer running
Fedora 15 LXDE x86-64, even with the latest Fedora kernels (which are
3.0-based). I tried updating the BIOS, but that didn't help.

What's strange is that from the user level, everything seems to go fine.
You can check the pm-suspend.log (wherever it lives, for me it's
/var/log) and it prints that all its hooks completed successfully and
that it's entering suspend. Then I get the same thing the OP gets: it
kicks to the text output from my boot and hangs.

I also notice that my hard drive access light comes on and stays on.
Not sure if that's important, but I'm using an SSD and for it to be
suspending to RAM and presumably accessing the disk for about 10 seconds
straight is problematic in my mind.

Additionally, I didn't have any issues with this problem on a similar A53,
except it had an AMD-based processor and AMD/ATI-based graphics. Hopefully
it's not an issue with the Intel stuff, but given how flaky Sandy Bridge can be
on Linux (graphics in particular), I wouldn't be surprised.

It's not DE/WM/X related, because I booted my computer in runlevel 3 and tried
running pm-suspend from there, it hung the same way. I'm both relieved and
alarmed that I'm not the only one experiencing this issue, and that it's not
distro-dependent. Fingers crossed that this is being worked on.

[Bug 221363] Re: Policy Kit Unlock Buttons Greyed Out when using NX / VNC / LTSP

2011-09-12 Thread Derek Simkowiak
Milan said in #62: Have a look at files in /usr/share/polkit-1/actions/
and try to guess what are the files you need to edit. Then it's probably
useful to file bugs so that it's fixed upstream, if applicable.

What are the criteria to know what files need to be edited? I saw
org.freedesktop.SystemToolsBackends.policy and gdm.policy mentioned above.
Are those the only two?

Would it be more correct to replace every allow_active with
allow_any in 100% of those files? There are 25 files that say
allow_active in them.

I want to help fix this bug, which means filing a bug report for every
package that needs a revised policy file, like gdm and system-tools-
backends:

root@cst8:/usr/share/polkit-1/actions# dpkg -S gdm.policy
gdm: /usr/share/polkit-1/actions/gdm.policy
root@cst8:/usr/share/polkit-1/actions# dpkg -S
org.freedesktop.SystemToolsBackends.policy
system-tools-backends:
/usr/share/polkit-1/actions/org.freedesktop.SystemToolsBackends.policy
root@cst8:/usr/share/polkit-1/actions#

I just don't understand what criteria to use to know which other
packages should have a bug filed.

[Bug 846808] Re: PolicyKit button doesn't allow authenticating

2011-09-11 Thread Derek Simkowiak
First: I did not see Authentication agent listed when I ran gnome-
session-properties on my 11.04 server. I did not see it on my Ubuntu
10.04 workstation, either. Not sure what's up with that.

However, you did identify the root of the problem. I did not mention
that I am using VNC. When I log in locally (with a physical keyboard
and monitor), then I am able to Click to make changes and change my
hostname.

When I log in using a physical keyboard, it looks like this when I run
who (my username is ubuntu):

  ubuntu tty8 2011-09-11 18:33 (:0)

But when I log in with VNC, it looks like this:

  ubuntu2011-09-11 18:32 (127.0.0.1:1)

I am guessing the difference between (:0) and (127.0.0.1:1) is why my
VNC session is not authorized to make changes. So I am marking this bug
as invalid.

Thank you for your help. I'm off to read the PolicyKit documentation
now... but if you could give me a hint as to where I need to add
127.0.0.1:1 it would be much appreciated :)

[Bug 846808] [NEW] gnome-network-admin menu entry does not use gksu

2011-09-10 Thread Derek Simkowiak
Public bug reported:

I want a desktop GUI method to change my hostname. So I apt-get install
gnome-network-admin.

But now when I go to System Administration Network, the program
network-admin says Not authorized to make changes. I must manually
launch a shell and run gksu network-admin. (This is using the admin
account created during install, which is a member of the admin and adm
groups.)

It should just prompt me for my password. I see no way to edit the
system hostname without going to a shell.

[Bug 699802] Re: error:: no video mode activated

2011-09-07 Thread Derek Simkowiak
#24 fixed it for me in 11.04 (with encrypted root and swap and separate,
unencrypted boot partition).

(Although, now I have a new problem: my cheap LCD monitor can't
recognize the resolution requested by the GRUB screen. Ugh!)

So, this is verified as a font path issue. I have to say, this bug is a
real stinker. It demonstrates that a new Ubuntu was released and nobody
bothered to even try full-disk encryption before releasing it...?

Does anybody else miss LILO? I've had more GRUB problems in the past 4
years than in the previous 10 years with LILO! HEY GRUB TEAM, STOP
BREAKING GRUB.

Sorry, had to vent. An entire product release was delayed due to this
stinker.

[Bug 699802] Re: error:: no video mode activated

2011-09-07 Thread Derek Simkowiak
Comment #24 seems like a viable workaround for some, but not for me.

After copying the fonts as per Comment #24, GRUB is now displaying at an
insane resolution of something like 2000x2000 px at the boot screen and
also when I get to a textmode shell. My cheap LCD won't show anything
at all, and my fancy LCD can only display the top half of the screen.

I mention it here only because it seems related to GRUB not setting the
video mode correctly. First, due to missing fonts (as per Comment #24),
and now, due to who-knows-why.

This is on an integrated NVidia G-Force chipset. Everything worked fine
under 10.4.

[Bug 658723] Re: VNCServer/Gnome - letter d minimizes window

2011-08-31 Thread Derek Simkowiak
This seems to be an issue with the SUPER key getting set as always
on when going over VNC. I've seen it with multiple VNC clients.

Manually editing the D shortcut doesn't fully fix the problem.
Double-clicking over VNC resultings in SUPER-Double Click, closing the
windows.

I am using vnc4server on Ubuntu 11.04.

[Bug 835740] [NEW] Sony VPC-F11 (VPCF11GGX) External monitor unrecognised over VGA

2011-08-27 Thread Derek
Public bug reported:

This is another in my series on issues with this laptop model's hardware.
Other bugs with this laptop include:
bug #771716, bug #791900, bug #791904, bug #791898 and bug #816231

Actually, I have to say, I've been surprised at how many hardware bugs
I've run into. I've had rather good luck with linux in general and
ubuntu in particular on laptops in the past few years.

Anyway. Title says it all. Plug in an external monitor and nothing
happens, apart from the external monitor complaining about no signal.
Don't have an HDMI connector yet, so I wasn't able to test that.

Nothing under dmesg, detect under gnome display properties does
nothing.

Trying to get this bug report into some order, so was renaming the
attachments. That particular one was replaced by a more recent
attachment, so I deleted it. See the list of attachments on the bug
report - hope you agree it is somewhat easier to follow now.

Apologies for the confusion over the kernels - the ones I quoted were of
course the kernels on which xorg was built.

That said, you do have different kernels for each machine, which would
mean different kernel modules and potentially different behaviour.

Also the Xorg.0.log files show an interesting difference:

derek-Dual2: xorg-server 2:1.10.1-1ubuntu1.1
dad-dual2: xorg-server
2:1.10.2.902+git20110708+server-1.10-branch.bc3c539e-0ubuntu0sarvatt~natty

The former is the same as my fresh installed system, the latter is
clearly very different. Could we see current versions of xserver-xorg:

dpkg -l xserver-xorg

Just paste the results into your response, no need to add as an
attachment.

My suspicion is that this bug is invalid as currently logged - the two
systems are not the same - as evidenced by the different kernels. I
suspect you should probably just be trying to get help on why dad-dual2
is not working through the usual channels.

Anyway, thank you for your considerable patience, I don't believe I'll
need any further information after the above.

The first attachment display_non_U was actually another copy of xorg.0.log.
Perhaps you could re-attach the output of:
sudo lshw -C display; lsb_release -a
from the non-working machine.

But according to the xorg files, we have some interesting kernels in
use:

   2.6.24-29-xen : no unity
   2.6.24-27-server : unity

Is that your understanding? uname -r will give you the current kernel
in use on both systems.

Does either have an /etc/X11/xorg.conf file? I think mostly this is no
longer used these days, but it is possible that your original system
still has one which is messing things up.

Thanks for that. Both versions give Capabilities : access denied  ;
Kernel driver in use: radeon ; Kernel modules: radeon. From the
link you suggested ( .../RadeonDriver) it seems to suggest that Unity
should run on my Radeon X1800.

Should be able to find out the same from lspci -v, under the VGA
section see kernel driver in use and kernel modules.

Also , the following link might be helpful:

[Bug 816231] Re: Sony VPC-F11 (VPCF11GGX) AR9287 Wireless hangs on large file transfers over WPA2

2011-08-01 Thread Derek
apport information

** Tags added: apport-collected natty

** Description changed:

This is another one in my series of bugs encountered in this Sony VPC-F11
Others include: bug #791900 , bug #791904 and bug #791898

Symptoms are that large file transfers over scp stall on my home network
using WPA2 personal. Seems random, but often enough that copying a folder of
music stalled every 5 or 6 songs, and a folder of video, about two or three
times per video.
No other linux machine here has this problem. Admittedly the others are
still on Ubuntu 10.10, but I tested a transfer of 4 gigabytes of data on the
Ubuntu 10.10 laptop with an AR9285 without any issues.

Nothing is reported to dmesg and the problem fixes itself temporarily if I
disconnect/reconnect in network manager or toggle the wifi kill switch.
By toggling the kill switch I was able to successfully copy over 4 gigabytes
of data, with perhaps 15 reconnects.

I was hoping one of the workarounds in bug #761176 would help, but none of
them seemed to do the trick, I get the feeling there were a few problems
reported in that bug, and since it was closed out fixed, filed a new one.
I've tested the 2.6.37 kernel, and 2.6.38 6-10 as well as -11 proposed.

  https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/761176/comments/20
appears to have similar hardware, although I don't know if the problem
  is the same.

[Bug 817063] Re: unity desktop wont run

2011-07-29 Thread derek
Hi Chris, thanks for your reply. Running 'lspci' gives me , among other
things, 01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc R520
[Radeon X1800]; but when I run 'lsmod | grep video' all I get is the
prompt. This is the same on both my versions of Natty.

[Bug 817063] [NEW] unity desktop wont run

2011-07-27 Thread derek
Public bug reported:

For some time now I have been running Ubuntu Karmic Koala with no
problem.I was tempted to upgrade to Natty Narwhale so I installed it
from DVD onto a spare partition on my 2nd disk) and it loaded ok and
gave me a Unity desktop. However, when I upgraded Karmic to V11.04 via
the web I was told that my hardware did not support Unity and gave me
Gnome desktop. How come one version of Natty lets me run Unity where-as
the upgraded version wont and both disks on the same pc?

[Bug 816231] [NEW] Sony VPC-F11 (VPCF11GGX) AR9287 Wireless hangs on large file transfers over WPA2

2011-07-25 Thread Derek
Public bug reported:

This is another one in my series of bugs encountered in this Sony VPC-F11
Others include: bug #791900 , bug #791904 and bug #791898

Symptoms are that large file transfers over scp stall on my home network using
WPA2 personal. Seems random, but often enough that copying a folder of music
stalled every 5 or 6 songs, and a folder of video, about two or three times per
video.
No other linux machine here has this problem. Admittedly the others are still
on Ubuntu 10.10, but I tested a transfer of 4 gigabytes of data on the Ubuntu
10.10 laptop with an AR9285 without any issues.

Nothing is reported to dmesg and the problem fixes itself temporarily if I
disconnect/reconnect in network manager or toggle the wifi kill switch.
By toggling the kill switch I was able to successfully copy over 4 gigabytes of
data, with perhaps 15 reconnects.

I was hoping one of the workarounds in bug #761176 would help, but none of them
seemed to do the trick, I get the feeling there were a few problems reported in
that bug, and since it was closed out fixed, filed a new one.
I've tested the 2.6.37 kernel, and 2.6.38 6-10 as well as -11 proposed.

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/761176/comments/20
appears to have similar hardware, although I don't know if the problem
is the same.

[Bug 791900] Re: Sony VPC-F11 (VPCF11GGX) Totem and other gstreamer apps have a black screen unless No Xv is selected in gstreamer-properties under Video Default Output

2011-07-19 Thread Derek
Oh, and performance of video playback is horrible with No Xv, so that's
hardly an ideal workaround.

Fortunately mplayer has more options for video output methods.
