[Bug 1605676] Re: criu doesn't save permissions on all cgroups visible to the container

2016-10-25 Thread Ed McDonagh
Is CRIU going to be updated in xenial? It is still at 2.0 vs 2.6 in
yakkety. And by implication is live migration never going to work
reliably in xenial without PPAs?

[Bug 1626100] Re: lxc stateful snapshot failed with 32512

2016-10-07 Thread Ed McDonagh
Checking on my system, lxc isn't actually installed (lxd is). Will the
lxc changes take effect when the latest lxd trickles through to xenial-
updates?

Also, my confusion was increased by the fact that the
https://linuxcontainers.org/lxd/news/ page announces that on the 5th of
October lxd 2.0.4 was released. It was also released on 15th August! I
assume that the release a couple of days ago was actually lxd 2.0.5? Who
needs to be asked to correct the web page?

Yakkety has 2.4.1 I think?

Either way, I'll test it out when 2.0.5 hits Xenial-updates. Looking
forward to it. Thanks Tycho (and the team)

[Bug 769866] Re: tab completion no longer escapes filenames and completes dirnames incorrectly (space instead of slash)

2011-08-24 Thread Ed McDonagh
+1 for removing /etc/bash_completion.d/acroread.sh fixing this issue.

Importance currently undecided... does that suggest not many people are
using the command line on the desktop versions? (None of my server boxes
have been upgraded to Natty, but I assume the lack of acroread would
mean that the problem doesn't occur?)

This bug really bugs me! So please fix it!

[Bug 768656] Re: Unity doesn't load on Acer 1810TZ GMA 4500MHD

2011-04-22 Thread Ed McDonagh
Thanks Omer.

I have done as you suggested (via a usb stick and the startup disk
creator), and lo and behold it loads with Unity.

As to why nvidia-current is installed, I have no idea. Unless it came in
with the xorg-edgers ppa?

I believe I am supposed to get rid of the ppa software by running ppa-
purge on the system. But that would take me back to where I started with
Unity not running.

Short of a fresh install, how might I get this working? Or is a
reinstall the only option?

Thanks again,

Ed

Success!

I removed the xorg-edgers ppa with 'sudo ppa-purge xorg-edgers', then
removed the nvidia drivers with 'sudo apt-get purge nvidia-current'.

Rebooted, and I am now in Unity! Hoorah.

Thanks for the pointer Omer.

[Bug 768656] Re: Unity doesn't load on Acer 1810TZ GMA 4500MHD

2011-04-22 Thread Ed McDonagh
Looks like it was a problem with competing nvidia drivers from a
previous install, so a fresh/live natty install worked fine. Removing
nvidia drivers from the system got unity working on the upgraded
install.

[Bug 768656] [NEW] Unity doesn't load on Acer 1810TZ GMA 4500MHD

2011-04-21 Thread Ed McDonagh
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: unity

Upgraded to Natty beta 2 on my Acer Aspire 1810TZ that has Intel GMA
4500MHD graphics.

On first login, I was informed that my hardware wasn't suitable for
Unity.

/usr/lib/nux/unity_support_test -p
Xlib: extension GLX missing on display :0.0.
Xlib: extension GLX missing on display :0.0.
Xlib: extension GLX missing on display :0.0.
Error: unable to create the OpenGL context

I tried updating the intel drivers by using the xorg-edgers ppa, but
this doesn't seem to have made any difference.

The GMA 4500 is one of the recommended cards - should it not work?

[Bug 563339] Re: OpenOffice quits after splash screen in guest session

2010-06-07 Thread Ed McDonagh
Ok, it hasn't happened for a while, but now it is back.

I killed soffice.bin using kill `pidof etc, restarted office, nothing
appeared. Reviewing htop, soffice was killed, and started again when I
started office.

I killed it again, and moved ~/.openoffice.org to ~/.wasopenoffice.org
and tried again. Same result.

2010-05-21 Thread Ed McDonagh
I have the same issue, but with a normal account and Lucid final.

Although there is no sign of open office in the System Monitor, it does
show up in htop, taking 467M of virtual memory, and having used 0.51s of
processor time.

It doesn't always happen, and until it happens open office works fine.
Once it has happened in a session, open office will behave in the same
way until a reboot has occurred. (I haven't tested if it behaves this
way after a session restart).

I am also using gnome-shell, currently 2.29.1+git20100517.5de1a15d-
0ubuntu1~10.04~ricotz1

Thanks Chris. I have logged out and in again, and openoffice is working
normally again. I will try your suggestion next time it happens, and
report back.

Thanks. Killing it hasn't helped in the past though - I have killed it
using htop rather than the command you suggest but I think they add up
to the same thing.

Also, on a UK qwerty keyboard, the backtick ` character is above the tab
key in the top left of the keyboard :-)

[Bug 526381] [NEW] gnome-shell stops working when terminal server client is running

2010-02-23 Thread Ed McDonagh
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-shell

Gnome-shell is running relatively well most of the time. However, if I launch a
terminal server client session, the following happens:
 * Alt-tab no longer responds
 * I can't get to alternative desktops
 * I can't type into open shells (but I can into other things, such as the web
browser)
 * I can't get to the activities screen
 * Window redraws can fail
 * I can't type into the terminal server client session unless the mouse
pointer is over the terminal server client window

All this is resolved when I log out of the terminal server client
session.

[Bug 483956] Re: ALT+TAB Does Not Work

2010-01-15 Thread Ed McDonagh
This has happened for me to on all three of my ubuntu 9.10 computers.
The fix suggested by Spiros worked for me, though unlike coldReactive, I
can switch between apps across all desktops, and I have the normal
behaviour of alt+tab switching between programs (Ctrl+tab continues to
allow switching between tabs/windows of the same program).

I changed the section in /etc/X11/xorg.conf, and then pressed Ctrl Alt

Logged in, fired up mythTV, problem still the same.

Composite is definately off (I think) because wobbly windows, desktop
cube etc no longer works.

Thank you for your time. What can I try next?

I have attached my current Xorg.0.log with composite disabled.

[Bug 250141] Re: after envyng update mythtv display corrupted

2008-07-21 Thread Ed McDonagh
** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: envyng-core

After update to envyng (1.1.1ubuntu17) on 19th July 2008, mythtv is no
longer displayed correctly. When the front end or back end is launched,
the blue screen launches as normal, but each row in the display doesn't
match up with the previous, as if the row length was wrong.

I uninstalled the ati driver using envyng, and mythtv worked again. I
reinstalled, and mythtv returned to the non-usable state.

When I quit mythtv, the main desktop display has the same problem for a
few seconds, and then it resolves itself. I can't do a screenshot in the
normal way, because when I do the resulting image is perfect, rather
than being messed up! However, I have attached a photograph of the
  effect.

[Bug 239515] [NEW] gnome-keyring-daemon keeps on growing till it cripples system

2008-06-12 Thread Ed McDonagh
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-keyring

Ubuntu 8.04 AMD_64
gnome-keyring: Installed: 2.22.2-0ubuntu1

I have had various problems with Evolution becoming unresponsive and the
whole computer grinding to a halt and only the mouse responding - even
Ctrl-Alt-F1 etc doesn't respond.

It all seems to be related to gnome-keyring-daemon forever increasing in
size. If Evolution starts to slow and I get to it in time, I can kill
the daemon, and then instantly Evolution springs back to life and the
daemon restarts.

If I don't notice and kill the daemon in time, it can continually
increase in size - for example today it reached 850MB of memory. This is
where it takes down the entire system if it runs out of real and swap
memory.

When the daemon restarts, it usually takes up about 500kB.

[Bug 236171] Re: gnome-keyring-daemon and Evolution cause 100% CPU usage

2008-06-12 Thread Ed McDonagh
I've been redirected here as my bug has been marked as a duplicate of
this one (bug #236171).

My experience is more that the memory usage of gnome-keyring-daemon
keeps growing until the system keels over. Simply killing the daemon
makes evolution nice and sprightly again, and it instantly restarts the
daemon.

Which then starts growing again!

[Bug 152286] Gusty Beta update stopped laptop Fn Volume Control

2007-10-13 Thread Ed McDonagh
Public bug reported:

I have an Asus A8Series laptop - A8SC. When I first installed Gutsy Beta
over a week ago the Fn F10/11/12 volume mute/down/up all worked.

At some point in the last week, they stopped working (Thursday or
earlier). The system updates every day - I don't know which day it
stopped working! I can still change the volume using the control located
beside the clock in the top bar - the 'Volume Control: HDA Intel (Alsa
mixer)'

I have looked through the bugs, and there are lots of no sound, or sound
stopping, but I couldn't find one like this.

Please let me know how to give you any more information that would help
to isolate the issue.
