[Bug 1243311] Re: GPU lockup when using 2 video cards

2014-02-26 Thread HyperHacker
I've tried this driver again, and this time it was only able to detect
one screen. I'll try with a development version next time I reboot.

2013-10-26 Thread HyperHacker
I can try removing it, but I'm not sure what the package name to remove
is. Doesn't look like something I need anyway. I have plenty of free RAM
already. Not sure how to reproduce the crash either way though.

Further research: when attempting to place the top screen in any other
position (left, right, or below other displays), it displays the same
noise, but the system doesn't hang. Syslog and kern.log are spammed with
a new message:

[Bug 1243311] [NEW] GPU lockup when using 2 video cards

2013-10-22 Thread HyperHacker
Public bug reported:

My system has a Radeon HD 7750 and Radeon HD 6450, together driving 4 displays:
Left: VGA on 7750 via DisplayPort adaptor, 1280x1024
Middle: DVI on 7750, 1920x1080
Right: HDMI on 7750, 1680x1050
Top (above Middle): VGA on 6450, 1280x1024

With only Left, Middle and Right enabled, everything works fine. When I try to
enable the top display by running:
$ xrandr --output VGA-1-0 --above DVI-0 --mode 1280x1024
then the top screen only displays noise, and the entire system will lock up for
about 10 seconds at a time, then run again for 10 seconds (and the top screen
goes blank), then lock up again, repeating until the top screen is disabled
again. syslog and kern.log report one of the GPUs is locking up.

With the proprietary driver fglrx, I can run all 4 displays, but it
requires the use of Xinerama, so I have no RandR or compositing, which
stinks. With the open source driver RandR and compositing work fine.

[Bug 1243354] [NEW] Xfce4-terminal cannot run on more than one X screen at a time

2013-10-22 Thread HyperHacker
Public bug reported:

I have a setup with two video cards, each running a separate X screen
(DISPLAY=:0.0 and :0.1), using fglrx driver.

For the most part this is working fine, except that I cannot run
Xfce4-terminal on both X screens at once. Several instances can run on
each screen, but as soon as I start one on one screen, all instances on
the other screen terminate with an X error. No other program seems to
exhibit this behavour. It happens whether transparent background is
enabled or not. lxterminal is able to display a transparent background
on both screens simultaneously.

Example session in lxterminal:
$ echo $DISPLAY
:0.0

$ DISPLAY=:0.0 xfce4-terminal
[1] 5078
# at this point, an xfce4-terminal window is open next to the lxterminal
# window on display :0.0
# it outputs the following message to stderr:

(xfce4-terminal:5078): GLib-WARNING **:
(/build/buildd/glib2.0-2.38.0/./glib/gerror.c:390):g_error_new_valist: runtime
check failed: (domain != 0)
Failed to connect to session manager: Failed to connect to the session manager:
SESSION_MANAGER environment variable not defined

# now I try to start another xfce4-terminal on display :0.1
$ DISPLAY=:0.1 xfce4-terminal
[2] 5133

$ The program 'xfce4-terminal' received an X Window System error.
This probably reflects a bug in the program.
The error was 'BadMatch (invalid parameter attributes)'.
  (Details: serial 480 error_code 8 request_code 1 minor_code 0)
  (Note to programmers: normally, X errors are reported asynchronously;
that is, you will receive the error a while after causing it.
To debug your program, run it with the --sync command line
option to change this behavior. You can then get a meaningful
backtrace from your debugger if you break on the gdk_x_error() function.)

(xfce4-terminal:5133): GLib-WARNING **:
(/build/buildd/glib2.0-2.38.0/./glib/gerror.c:390):g_error_new_valist: runtime

SESSION_MANAGER environment variable not defined

[1]- Exit 1 DISPLAY=:0.0 xfce4-terminal

# now an Xfce4-terminal window is shown on display :0.1, but the window
I previously opened on :0.0 is gone, as indicated by the X error
message.

The same issue happens if I use `xfce4-terminal --display=:0.0` instead
of setting the DISPLAY variable. Adding --geometry to ensure the window
actually opens within the boundaries of the display doesn't help either.
(Anyway, it was always opening within the display boundaries even
without that option, but just a hunch that might have helped.)

syslog, kern.log and Xorg.0.log don't show anything interesting when
this happens.

I suspect a driver bug that Xfce4-terminal is triggering somehow, but I
don't know how to investigate. (Unfortunately I couldn't get the open-
source drivers to work with this setup at all.)

critical application, and the newer, working versions are already in use
on newer Ubuntu releases). Is there anything else I need to do?

[Bug 1190507] Re: Twitter no longer works in version 3.0.5

2013-06-17 Thread HyperHacker
Alright, how does that look?

** Description changed:

Version 3.0.5 uses an old Twitter API which is no longer functional, but
this version is still the default in Quantal and earlier. These distros
need to be updated to a working version.
+
+ [Impact]
+ This bug renders Twitter services unusable from Bitlbee on 12.04 and previous
Ubuntu releases. The proposed fix is to upgrade them to Bitlbee 3.2 or newer
which use the new (now mandatory) Twitter API.
+
+ [Test Case]
+ Anyone who already has Bitlbee linked to a Twitter account on these releases
will find it not working since the API change, without doing anything
themselves.
+ Those who don't already have it set up should be able to install the
'bitlbee' package and follow the instructions on
http://wiki.bitlbee.org/HowtoTwitter to link it to a Twitter account, although
those steps will likely fail as well.
+
+ [Regression Potential]
+ Updating to version 3.2 shouldn't break anything, although the Twitter UI is
slightly different from previous versions (IDs shown in hex, more frequent
updates, able to receive DMs).

[Bug 1184063] Re: With nonrectangular multi-monitor arrangements, display region is wrong

2013-05-26 Thread HyperHacker
Actually, I guess it's not even non-rectangular configurations that
cause this issue - after changing them to a wide rectangular
configuration, DVI-1 still displays the region from 1280x1024+0+0 (which
is now also displayed on the topmost screen), while xrandr still claims
it's 1920x1080+2560+0. The cursor isn't huge anymore though. So this
just seems to be some issue with handling multi-monitor configurations.
Again the cursor moves across all screens correctly, but the windows
don't.

Also another correction, the previous version I was using was 12.10, not
12.04. Both configurations worked fine there. (Except that Awesome WM
would place windows off screen, but that's another bug...)

I tried running xcompmgr to see if that would make any difference, but
there's no change.

** Summary changed:

- With nonrectangular multi-monitor arrangements, display region is wrong
+ [HD5770] Multi-monitor display region is wrong (worked in 12.10)

[Bug 1184063] [NEW] With nonrectangular multi-monitor arrangements, display region is wrong

2013-05-24 Thread HyperHacker
Public bug reported:

In Lubuntu 13.04, I have an unusual display configuration: three
monitors arranged horizontally and a fourth centred above them. This
worked fine in 12.04; after upgrading, the middle display is not working
correctly.

xrandr --output DVI-1 --mode 1920x1080 --rate 60 \
--output HDMI-0--mode 1680x1050 --rate 60 --right-of DVI-1 \
--output DVI-0 --mode 1280x1024 --rate 60 --left-of DVI-1 \
--output DisplayPort-0 --mode 1280x1024 --rate 60 --above DVI-1

Despite what xrandr claims, and no matter what I tell it, the middle
display (DVI-1) remains at 1280x1024 and displays windows from the
region 1280x1024+0+0, i.e. the region above the leftmost display (DVI-0)
that shouldn't be displayed. Windows in the region 1920x1080+1280+1024,
i.e. the region DVI-1 actually occupies, are not shown anywhere. The
other screens display correctly. (This can only be seen by dragging a
window partway off of the topmost or leftmost screen into this region,
since the mouse does move correctly and won't enter this region.)

Additionally, if xrandr is used to turn DVI-1 off, it will not be able
to turn it back on again. Like the region issue, it will claim the
display is on when it is not.

Additionally, the mouse cursor appears about twice as large as normal.
It does, however, move across the screens correctly.

Related: http://askubuntu.com/questions/299744/lubuntu-13-04-cannot-set-
display-resolution-windows-invisible-huge-mouse-curso

All of these things were working correctly on the same machine in 12.04.
I hadn't tried 12.10.

[Bug 1131822] [NEW] Wallpaper displayed incorrectly on multiple screens

2013-02-22 Thread HyperHacker
Public bug reported:

I've installed Lubuntu 12.10 on a system with four displays arranged
horizontally totalling 6160 pixels horizontal resolution. I created a
wallpaper image that places a different picture on each screen. The left
two screens are not displayed correctly. See attached images (both
scaled to 1/3 size).

It seems like there is some kind of strange layering issue. If I click
on the desktop on the leftmost screen, I get the result shown in the
screenshot. If I then click on the second-left screen (that shows the
incorrect image), anywhere on the desktop that's showing the incorrect
picture (i.e. roughly the right half of the screen), the wallpaper
changes, so that both screens are displaying the picture that should be
shown on the leftmost screen, identically (the second screen's wallpaper
is not visible anywhere). The other screens' wallpapers display fine.

This is using Tile the image to fill the entire screen setting in
Desktop Preferences; other settings don't let the image span all four
screens correctly.

Yes, there are several themes you could switch to that would make the
bug effectively invisible. Or the author could go change the single line
that specifies the gtk-stock-remove or whatever icon, and change it to
the appropriate icon for zoom out or reduce, and actually fix the
issue.

[Bug 583797] Re: Warn on closing with multiple tabs open not honored

2012-11-17 Thread HyperHacker
Still an issue with 16.0.2. Accidentally hit Ctrl+Q instead of Ctrl+W
(and you will), browser just quits without any warning or prompt.
Extremely annoying, extremely obvious design issue that should have been
fixed over 2 years ago now.

At least in recent versions it's possible to restore the session, thus
making this more of an annoyance than a fatal bug that would make the
browser unusable.

[Bug 1064569] [NEW] Text-based installer should prompt for HTTP proxy information at beginning of process

2012-10-09 Thread HyperHacker
Public bug reported:

Just about every time I've installed a *buntu, using the alternate ISOs, the
same thing happens:
1) The installer asks for information such as desired username and password,
time zone, and keyboard layout.
2) After filling out a few pages, it appears to start a long-running task, so
at this point I assume it has all the information it needs and can complete
installation unattended, so I go do something else for a while.
3) I come back hours later expecting the installation to be done, and instead
see it barely started, paused, asking for HTTP proxy information.

It's a huge waste of time, and poor UI design to wait until partway
through a long-running process to ask for more information you need to
finish it, when you know you'll need it every time. It should prompt for
this information right at the beginning, and probably do a connection
test, so you can safely leave for a few hours after starting the
installation and it'll actually be done when you get back. Perhaps it
could even just try to connect without a proxy and see if that works,
since I imagine it usually will.

The last two messages repeat several times per second, inflating the
syslog to a nice 850MB until it was finally rebooted (which required a
hard shutdown, as it appeared to just lock up at a blank screen after
the usual shutdown process).

The last thing I was doing with it was watching video in VLC. Of note is
that I stopped xcompmgr shortly after starting the video as it was
causing a lot of frames to drop (which is unusual as well).

I tried to report this using ubuntu-bug, but only get timeout errors
when submitting it.

[Bug 852410] Re: Thunar crashed with SIGSEGV in thunarx_menu_provider_get_file_actions() thinking a directory was a file

2012-05-23 Thread HyperHacker
Just had this again in 1.2.3. Managed to prevent the crash by deleting
and recreating the directory from within Thunar. Any other method caused
it to still show up as a file. If I renamed the file on the command
line, it would appear as a directory, then creating a new directory with
the same name as before, it again appeared as a file. Looks like Thunar
has some cache of information about files it's seen, and creating the
directory from within Thunar got it to remove/update the invalid entry.

[Bug 919084] [NEW] Open Terminal command often opens two windows

2012-01-20 Thread HyperHacker
Public bug reported:

When right-clicking an Xfce4-terminal window and selecting Open
Terminal, often two new terminal windows appear. This can also be seen
using the comand-line --window option. e.g. my somewhat complex setup to
launch 4 terminals at login:

nohup xfce4-terminal --role Terminal --hide-menubar --hide-borders
--hide-toolbars --geometry 80x25+1920+720 --command 'screen -S a1' --tab
--command 'screen -S a2' \
--window --role Terminal --hide-menubar --hide-borders --hide-toolbars
--geometry 80x25+2334+720 --command 'screen -S b1' --tab --command 'screen -S
b2' \
--window --role Terminal --hide-menubar --hide-borders --hide-toolbars
--geometry 80x25+2748+720 --command 'screen -S c1' --tab --command 'screen -S
c2' \
--window --role Terminal --hide-menubar --hide-borders --hide-toolbars
--geometry 80x25+3162+720 --tab \
--window --role Terminal --hide-menubar --hide-borders --hide-toolbars
--geometry 80x25+0+0 \
/dev/null

Executing this command often causes *eight* terminals to pop up and
execute their given commands, as it it had been executed twice.

[Bug 908512] [NEW] Character U+2591 LIGHT SHADE breaks search and replace

2011-12-24 Thread HyperHacker
Public bug reported:

1) Open a document, paste some blocks into it (U+2588 FULL BLOCK) and arrange
them into a nice pattern with spaces.
2) Open Replace dialog, enter a single space into the Find box, and paste
U+2591 LIGHT SHADE into the Replace box.
3) Check Replace all at once and click Find and Replace.
4) Mousepad performs the replace, but inserts a space after each of the LIGHT
SHADE characters.
5) After doing this, you can use different characters in the replace box, which
used to work normally, and it will still add a space after each one. The only
way to correct it is to restart the program.

I copied the box characters from gucharmap, if that makes a difference.

[Bug 908512] Re: Character U+2591 LIGHT SHADE breaks search and replace

2011-12-24 Thread HyperHacker
Actually, this seems to be a more general issue, maybe related to
control/unicode characters. Here's another way to reproduce:
1) open a file consisting entirely of IRC colour codes and blocks such as:
x04█x04█x10▒x10▒x10▒x10▒x10... (where x = ASCII character 3)
2) replace all instances of 10 with 03
3) mousepad replaces all instances of 10 with 1003.

[Bug 824099] Re: Max GL texture size can break multi-head

2011-11-28 Thread HyperHacker
I should note that the description is somewhat inaccurate:
1) Multi-head isn't really the problem, just the easiest way to reproduce it. A
single display with a high enough resolution can trigger it as well.
2) There are two separate limits: max texture size and max framebuffer size.
The former can be worked around by breaking large windows into multiple
textures, but this won't help the latter. GL init fails and all drawing
operations do nothing, leaving the user with a display of random uninitialized
VRAM (i.e. corrupted display, thick slanted lines, chunks of wallpaper etc).

[Bug 329616] Re: Multiple instances of xfdesktop started simultaneously

2011-11-04 Thread HyperHacker
This has suddenly started happening to me in 11.04 after changing some session
settings. There were a few things I did that could have led to the problem...
First I changed my GDM settings to log in automatically. Shortly after doing
this I came back to the machine after it had been idle for a while and found
the mouse not working properly, unable to switch windows by Alt+tab, etc. It
seemed as if something had grabbed the mouse, as if a menu were open somewhere
that I couldn't close. xwininfo, import etc would also complain they couldn't
grab the mouse.
I restarted and X failed to start. I discovered at this point that a capacitor
on the GPU (an nVidia) had failed, so I replaced with an ATI I had around,
changed the drivers, got Compiz working again, etc.
With the ATI card it would always start up with only one monitor enabled and
I'd have to turn on the other with xrandr. I tried logging out and clicking
save this session in hopes it would stay that way, and I suspect this is
where the trouble really began.
Saving the session didn't fix the monitor layout (I still have to use xrandr
every time I log in), but now it takes a very long time to log in, the splash
screen flickers a lot, and I get messages about the tray area losing focus. The
mouse grabbing problem also comes back about once a day, and the only way to
fix it seems to be to restart X. No amount of killing processes would get it
working again.
In diagnosing this issue I discovered that every time I log in, for some reason
there are 6 instances of xfdesktop, xfce4-panel and xfwm4 started. Killing
these doesn't seem to help anything either.

It seemed like changing the login settings broke something to cause the
mouse issues, followed by a conveniently-timed hardware failure that
forced me to switch video drivers, and then checking save session on
logging out broke more things. I've had trouble getting the session
management to do anything useful, so this seems like the most likely
culprit here too...

[Bug 555641] Re: MASTER: max texture size prevents compiz from running

2011-09-14 Thread HyperHacker
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 824099 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/824099

I think bug #824099 might be related to framebuffer size (plugging in
the extra screen makes the display area bigger) and may well be the same
issue as bug #789385, whereas this bug relates to max texture size. The
former limits the size of your total display area, whereas the latter
limits the size of individual windows (which unfortunately includes the
root window which occupies the entire display area anyway).

I haven't tried directly connecting (will do that now), but I just got
again a total freakout, where I could actually see my mouse flickering
on and off every second. Wondering if this could be line noise or
something caused by running cables too near speakers or power lines?

[Bug 808903] [NEW] Screen capture crashes X

I'm not sure how I'd trace the controller info, but I haven't seen this
since moving my mouse to a USB 1.0 hub. Might be coincidence.

After this, some applications (e.g. XChat) redraw extremely slowly. (I can

be to reboot. Others (e.g. Firefox) keep working normally.

A message also appears when performing certain actions such as switching

[Bug 795626] [NEW] ehci_hcd fatal error - USB devices randomly crash

2011-06-10 Thread HyperHacker
Public bug reported:

At seemingly random times (twice in the past week) all USB devices
connected to the system suddenly stop working. /var/log/kern.log shows
errors from ehci_hcd, then usually several filesystem I/O errors from
the USB hard disk. After this USB devices may automatically reconnect as
USB 1.1 or may not work until the machine is rebooted.

In one case I came home to find my USB mouse powered off, and messages
like host controller halted, very bad in kern.log. USB hard disk was
also inaccessible (I/O errors) and appeared to have locked up (constant
blinking LED). After rebooting and plugging in my phone to a powered hub
there were messages complaining about insufficient available bus
power, which doesn't sound like it makes a lot of sense (shouldn't the
powered hub and the phone's battery be enough?).

While browsing the web today again the controller crashed producing the
messages shown in dmesg; in this case the devices reconnected as USB 1.1
and the hard disk is still partially accessible (some files can be read,
others give I/O errors). The mouse kept working during this time. After
the crash I disconnected and reconnected a few USB devices to see if
anything else would happen, but it looks like ehci has already been
unloaded.

(Errors about unknown partition table happen because the drive is
encrypted with Truecrypt.)

[Bug 795626] Re: ehci_hcd fatal error - USB devices randomly crash

2011-06-10 Thread HyperHacker
Just randomly got the total USB failure again. CPU usage was high
(running grep); maybe some correlation?

[131274.056314] uhci_hcd :00:10.3: host system error, PCI problems?
[131274.056320] uhci_hcd :00:10.3: host controller halted, very bad!

USB mouse shut down entirely at this time and would only work again by
plugging it into a USB 1.1 hub (instead of directly into the USB 2.0
port it had been in).

[Bug 795626] Re: ehci_hcd fatal error - USB devices randomly crash

2011-06-10 Thread HyperHacker
The report was filed after the error occurred, so USB 2.0 devices had already
been shut down. The crash in comment #2 followed shortly after. Notice in
dmesg.txt:
[122397.871035] ehci_hcd :00:10.4: fatal error

Attached is output from sudo lsusb -v after a fresh boot when USB
devices are functioning correctly. (Same configuration except that the
cell phone is no longer connected.)

[Bug 789385] [NEW] Max 3D frame buffer size causes corrupted, unusable display

2011-05-27 Thread HyperHacker
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: compiz

This is similar to Bug #745839 (for a while I thought that's what it
was), but not quite the same issue. Compiz renders everything to a
single, giant OpenGL window that covers the entire display area. If your
display area is larger than your video card's maximum *framebuffer* size
(not *texture* size as in Bug #745839), OpenGL fails to initialize.

Compiz does not detect this failure, and so still covers your screen
with this window which now does not have an OpenGL context bound to it.
As a result, all drawing operations fail. The window never gets redrawn,
so it keeps displaying whatever happened to be in the block of video
memory allocated to it (which in my case is usually a corrupted version
of the desktop wallpaper). The apparent effect is that all you can see
is a screenfull of garbage; the cursor still changes and interacts with
windows, but they aren't visible.

This problem isn't solved by breaking windows into multiple small
textures, since the issue isn't the size of the window textures but the
size of the OpenGL framebuffer they're being drawn into. The only
workaround I can think of would be to create multiple OpenGL windows
(probably one per monitor) and split the drawing between them.
(Hopefully it's possible to share textures between multiple OpenGL
windows; otherwise it might be necessary to forbid a window from ever
spanning across multiple screens.)

This issue is the cause of the error message: r300: Implementation error:
Render targets are too big in r300_set_framebuffer_state, refusing to bind
framebuffer state!
The same can be seen with other programs, e.g.: glxgears --geometry
3000x1000+0+0
This displays the same error message and the same window full of garbage (at
least for one frame before glxgears resizes its window for some reason).

Since the corrupted display is really just a window covering everything,
it's still possible to kill Compiz (by blindly clicking or typing or
using another terminal) and get the display working again, but for
novice users the apparent effect would be that they simply can't see any
windows.

[Bug 761849] Re: xfce4-sensors-plugin crashed with SIGSEGV in calloc()

2011-05-20 Thread HyperHacker
I just got this same crash report when starting up and noticed it had
also lost my settings. Yesterday I set up the sensors plugin, renamed
some sensors and enabled them, and later shut down the machine. Today I
saw the sensors plugin was in my panel, but with no sensors enabled, all
of the names reverted to default, and the title showing (which I had
disabled). This crash occurred when I removed it from the panel.

This sounds like the same issue I have, but the screenshot looks

right side).

[Bug 782552] [NEW] [xorg-edgers] Xorg crash (SIGSEGV) when taking screenshot

2011-05-14 Thread HyperHacker
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

Any time I try to capture a screenshot of the entire screen, with any program,
Xorg crashes. Screenshots of individual windows work OK.
Even using select a region with the Screenshot plugin for Xfce4-panel causes
a crash as soon as I click the button (before ever getting to select anything).

This is the first time I've tried to take a screenshot since installing
this system so I don't know if the issue exists in older versions of X.
I'll try reverting to official packages and see if it still crashes.
Before this I was using an entirely different machine, with an nVidia
card and x86 CPU, so I can't really say if it's ever worked on this
system.

[Bug 745839] Re: [Xpress 200M] compiz crashed with SIGSEGV in pthread_mutex_lock() due to compiz loading on rez texture size

2011-05-13 Thread HyperHacker
This issue has an interesting symptom on my Radeon X300SE. Compiz
appears to be starting normally, but just as it finishes the screen
turns into a jumbled mess of my desktop wallpaper. More interesting is
if I enable Enhanced Zoom Desktop and zoom in or out, the screen
alternates between that jumbled mess and the wallpaper itself - not
zoomed, and with nothing else present (no windows, panels etc), but also
not distorted at all. Trying to take a screenshot crashes the X server
so I've attached a photo instead.

The system still works just fine; I can even grab windows and move them
around with the still-visible cursor (which still changes when over a
text field, etc) - I just can't see them, nor anything other than this
jumbled mess (or the intact wallpaper if I try to zoom).

It also displays a fairly self-explanatory error message in the terminal:
r300: Implementation error: Render targets are too big in
r300_set_framebuffer_state, refusing to bind framebuffer state!

I wonder if a possible workaround is to not draw the root window, but
draw one fake root window for each display (or each 2048x2048 region
of the display area), copying from the real one or just displaying the
desktop wallpaper on it, and not allow any window to be larger than that
size? It seems like only the root window is likely to ever get that big
in most setups, and there's not really much reason I know of not to
split it into multiple windows, which would avoid creating such large
textures. (A better idea of course is to split windows into multiple
textures, but that requires xrandr 1.4.)

Anyway I just wanted to note that odd symptom and the error message in
case anyone else had been asking about it.

[Bug 749946] [NEW] [VIA8237 - VIA 8237] Sound crashes during video playback, wedges system

2011-04-03 Thread HyperHacker
Public bug reported:

Recently, while watching movies in VLC, after about 45 to 60 minutes sometimes
ALSA will crash. The symptoms are:
1) Audio suddenly stops playing.
2) After a few seconds, video freezes.
3) System enters a tight loop, appearing to be almost completely frozen - mouse
cursor will not move, SSH clients stop responding (but remain connected).
4) After a few seconds, there is heavy disk activity. The system may then start
to gradually respond to keypresses (and SSH clients eventually update), but
runs extremely slowly.

The system continues to lag severely (any input takes several seconds to
register, screen refreshes only once every few seconds) until pressing
Alt+SysRq+K to kill the X session and all processes under it and log in
again. Even this takes quite a while to execute. Once the session
terminates and GDM appears again, the system once again runs normally
and audio resumes working.

At some point during this ordeal, a number of messages are written to
syslog (see attachment).

Should also note that a similar problem had been occurring with a
different sound card (different symptoms but same returned a value that
is exceptionally large message) several months ago. Switching to the
card I use now solved that problem and sound has been working fine until
it crashed a few days ago and again today, both while playing video in

[Bug 264222] Re: new windows opacity setting crashes compiz

2011-01-02 Thread HyperHacker
This gets me every time. It's not crashing; the rule class= matches
every window and is immediately applied; the default value is zero, so
every window's opacity is set to zero. A workaround is to set the
opacity to 100 before selecting a window.

[Bug 696642] [NEW] Clicking window to select name, class, etc does not work

2011-01-02 Thread HyperHacker
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: compizconfig-settings-manager

1) In any plugin that has window-specific settings, click New.
2) Click the + button next to the Windows box.
3) Select any type, click Grab, and click on a window.

Expected results:
4) The value appears in the Value box; click OK.
5) The rule is added with this value (e.g. class=foo).

Actual results:
4) The value appears in the Value box; click OK.
5) The rule is added with no value (e.g. class=).

This bug then goes on to cause Bug #264222.

[Bug 264222] Re: new windows opacity setting crashes compiz

2011-01-02 Thread HyperHacker
There are actually two issues here; the first is Bug #696642; the second
is that the opacity is set to zero by default, so it's easy to
accidentally enter a rule that makes all your windows suddenly
disappear. A fix would be to set opacity to 100 by default.

[Bug 696291] Re: Cannot Manually Set Key Bindings

2011-01-02 Thread HyperHacker
One workaround for this problem is to export your settings to a file,
edit the setting there, and import it again, but watch out for Bug
#696643 when you do this.

[Bug 573516] Re: Xfce Crashes When Choosing Theme Wildbush

2011-01-01 Thread HyperHacker
Same happens to me on a fresh install. Seems like this bug should have
higher importance as it provides a very easy way for new users to
accidentally completely break their system and the only way to get
back in requires manipulating files in text mode (not ideal for someone
who just switched to Linux). Definitely at least remove the file until
it stops causing trouble.

[Bug 696291] [NEW] Cannot Manually Set Key Bindings

2011-01-01 Thread HyperHacker
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: compizconfig-settings-manager

When setting any key/mouse button bindings, the manual edit button (next
to reset button) does not work. It prompts for the setting as expected
but no matter what is entered - even just clicking OK without changing
the value - the setting is changed to Disabled.

This is particularly problematic when combined with Bug #304594 as this
was the only way to use the additional mouse buttons.

[Bug 153626] Re: Initiate Window Move can only be set to button 1

2011-01-01 Thread HyperHacker
This was working (bound to Button10) before I upgraded to Xubuntu 10.10,
now no matter what I do it reverts to AltButton1. As well if I set it
to AltButton3 it asks if I want to disable Window Menu that is already
bound to AltButton3, but when confirming this nothing has changed;
still Alt+Button3 shows the menu and if I close and reopen the settings
page, Initiate Window Move is back to AltButton1.

Disabling desktop integration, importing from config file and restarting
Compiz does finally allow me to use Button10 as I had been before.

[Bug 33696] Re: Packages not authenticated

2010-08-31 Thread HyperHacker
Recently I've been getting update notifications from Xubuntu's automatic
update, and when I attempt to install them, it warns me that some are
not authenticated. If I cancel and try again later it eventually works
without any warning, so I assume it just hasn't downloaded
authentication information yet or some such. This seems like a bug, but
what I really wanted to find is an option to not notify of updates that
can't be authenticated. I'd much rather wait for the authentication data
to download (or whatever is going on there) than install an
unauthenticated package if I can.
