[Bug 1846334] Re: cupsd assert failure: free(): invalid pointer
I confirm the hirsute version fixes the issue. I created https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/cups/+bug/1915181/ recently without having seen this bug report, and I'm pretty confident it's the same issue. I reinstalled groovy on a VM, confirmed the bug occurred (it did), rebuilt 2.3.3op1 from hirsute and installed it. The problem no longer occurs after that. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1846334 Title: cupsd assert failure: free(): invalid pointer To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/cups/+bug/1846334/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 1915181] Re: cups crashes with SIGABRT every other printing attempt
Looks like it may be a duplicate of https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/cups/+bug/1846334. The backtrace I got from the core dump locates the errorneous free() call in ippDelete as well. Plus it's also a samsung printer. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1915181 Title: cups crashes with SIGABRT every other printing attempt To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/cups/+bug/1915181/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 1915181] Re: cups crashes with SIGABRT every other printing attempt
** Description changed: Using ubuntu 20.10, cups 2.3.3-3ubuntu1, with a networked Samsung C480 printer (was automatically detected and set up on installation of the system). Every other attempt to print fails with a varying message depending on the printing app (eg. on libreoffice write, "Cannot start printer"). Waiting a few minutes and retrying prints successfully. Looking at cups.service journal messages while attempting to print, it looks like the second printing attempt crashes cupsd cupsd[]: free(): invalid pointer systemd[1]: cups.service: Main process exited, code=dumped, status=6/ABRT systemd[1]: cups.service: Failed with result core-dump The service then proceeds to restart after a few seconds, and trying to print again succeeds. Trying to print once more thereafter triggers the issue again. - I could not find a trace of the coredump, and cuspd's error_log shows - nothing happening around the crash (it does show some - "org.freedesktop.ColorManager.AlreadyExists" error messages on restart, - but I figured this would be normal, I can see the same message on other - machines that have no printing issues). - - I would expect this kind of event to trigger an apport report, but there - is no apport popup when it happens. This is a pretty standard (and recent) ubuntu install, with not much customized; in particular no apport custom config was made, and nothing was configured on cups side or ubuntu print settings, everything is set up as it was autodetected on install. [Bug 1915181] [NEW] cups crashes with SIGABRT every other printing attempt
Public bug reported: Using ubuntu 20.10, cups 2.3.3-3ubuntu1, with a networked Samsung C480 printer (was automatically detected and set up on installation of the system). I could not find a trace of the coredump, and cuspd's error_log shows nothing happening around the crash (it does show some "org.freedesktop.ColorManager.AlreadyExists" error messages on restart, but I figured this would be normal, I can see the same message on other machines that have no printing issues). I would expect this kind of event to trigger an apport report, but there is no apport popup when it happens. Maybe because it's not a user process, not sure (this is not my usual setup, I've not been using Ubuntu for years). This is a pretty standard (and recent) ubuntu install, with not much customized; in particular no apport custom config was made, and nothing was configured on cups side or ubuntu print settings, everything is set up as it was autodetected on install. The same printer works flawlessly on a different computer using Arch and cups 2.3.3 as well (albeit without any ubuntu patches, obviously). ** Affects: cups (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Tags: apport-collected groovy ** Tags added: apport-collected groovy ** Description changed: Using ubuntu 20.04, cups 2.3.3-3ubuntu1, with a networked Samsung C480 printer (was automatically detected and set up on installation of the system). I can confirm this issue on my UX32VD running Ubuntu 13.04. However I don't know how this issue could be solved. The BIOS tells us the maximum brightness value accepted but the minimum accepted value is always 0. The actual behaviour of the different brightness values is decided by the hardware, that means we have no way of knowing whether 0 means backlight off or minimal backlight on a specific machine, unless by maintaining a list of hardware that turns backlight off when brightness is 0. ** Changed in: gnome-control-center (Ubuntu) Status: New = Confirmed -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1093325 Title: Lowest brightness setting renders screen black To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-control-center/+bug/1093325/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1175069] [NEW] Enable brightness scaling on different hardware models
Public bug reported: Using Ubuntu 13.04, gnome-settings-daemon 3.6.4-0ubuntu8. Different hardware have different brightness scales, for example : - ranges are different ('max_brightness' value) - some hardware turns backlight off when brightness is 0 - some hardware have a linear scale, some do not For example, on an EeePC 1215N, the brightness ranges from 0 to 8 and changes are nearly linear (the increase between 0 and 1 seems similar to the increase between 7 and 8). On a Zenbook UX32VD, the brightness ranges from 0 to 100, with 0 turning the backlight completely off, and changes are a lot less linear (the increase between 1 and 2 seems similar to the increase between 90 and 100). It would be nice to allow configuring a different scale on different hardware so that brightness changes seem more linear. ** Affects: gnome-settings-daemon (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1175069 Title: Enable brightness scaling on different hardware models To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-settings-daemon/+bug/1175069/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 436043] Re: Ralink wifi doesn't work with latest -rt kernel
Hi Alessio, I just tried the latest Lucid updates (with kernel 2.6.31-10-rt) and the same problem is present. The wireless card is detected but NetworkManager shows all networks with full signal strength, successfully connects but then I have no internet connectivity. [Bug 436043] Re: Ralink wifi doesn't work with latest -rt kernel
I did some additional experiments with rt2* modules. I tried compiling and installing the drivers from ralinktech.com (ignoring the errors and blacklisting rt2800usb, as indicated on several forum threads I found). They work perfectly with the -generic kernel, and seem to work better than the stock modules with -rt: NetworkManager shows correct network signal strengths and remote hosts are finally reachable. However, when using the -rt kernel, after a few minutes the system becomes very sluggish (or, to be more precise, mouse and keyboard input are sluggish, as the system overall performance seem to be normal), with no additional visible kernel messages and nothing hogging system resources (at least to the extent visible in top). Then I tried getting the linux-backports-modules source package and compiled it against 2.6.31-9-rt. It worked, but gave the exact same results as the ralink driver (I guess linux-backports-modules contains the latest ralink drivers). I also tried using Wicd instead of NetworkManager, with the same results. In a few days I will try using the ralink driver with its .dat configuration file. I have one question, though. Are there any options I could pass to the rt2xxx modules to make them more verbose ? I had a quick look at the driver source, but couldn't find any. -- Ralink wifi doesn't work with latest -rt kernel https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/436043 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 436043] Re: Ralink wifi doesn't work with latest -rt kernel
Okay, I think there is something I've missed since the beginning with this bug. I just did a full reinstall of Karmic (switching from fakeraid to lvm) and when I first booted on 2.6.31-14-generic... wireless network didn't work, with the exact same symptoms as those I've described here: requesting firmware message, visible networks but with always full signal strength bars, etc. The problem was solved by installing linux-backports-modules-karmic (which depends on linux-backports-modules-2.6.31-14-generic). I recall having installed this package on my previous setup (don't remember the reason, though). I also reinstalled linux-rt, and the problem is still present, which is not much of a surprise. And there's no linux-backports-modules package for -rt. Now, I don't know how to act. Should we call this bug no backported modules for linux-rt, or my ralink usb wireless card does not work without backported modules ? -- Ralink wifi doesn't work with latest -rt kernel https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/436043 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Thanks for your report, and for taking the time to help Ubuntu get better. I'm marking this bug as invalid, as this behavior is consistent with the rest of the gnome desktop. [Bug 436555] Re: firefox-3.0 on Jaunty uses a lot more memory than firefox-3.5 on XP
Thanks for your report. Memory usage was one of the big issues with Firefox 3.0, and as you probably noticed, Firefox 3.5 is a lot better at it. I encourage you to compare what is comparable, and either check memory usage with Firefox 3.0 in Windows, or with Firefox 3.5 in Ubuntu. You can use Ubuntuzilla (http://sourceforge.net/apps/mediawiki/ubuntuzilla/index.php?title=Main_Page) to install it, or find a PPA repository to install it manually. As Firefox 3.5 will be installed by default with Karmic Koala, I don't think this issue is likely to be addressed. If I were you, I'd close this bug (if of course you are satisfied with Firefox 3.5 memory usage), but I won't take the decision for you. -- firefox-3.0 on Jaunty uses a lot more memory than firefox-3.5 on XP https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/436555 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
