[Bug 1241784] [NEW] File roller creates tmp file on source drive regardless of where the file destination is
Public bug reported: Package version 3.4.1-0ubuntu1 Architecture: AMD64 I had a large file-set to roll up into a zip file (a Clonezilla image: A folder containing 44 files totalling 47GB on a USB drive). I call this Drive A. I connected a second drive (Drive B) to the machine with the intent that I would read the data from Drive A and write the zip file to Drive B in order to avoid head-thrashing on Drive A and maximise throughput. I right clicked on the folder on Drive A and clicked Compress... I used the destination pulldown to indicate I wanted the zip file to be created on Drive B. I started the compression operation. File-roller created the .zip.tmp file on Drive A in the same folder as the object being compressed instead of on Drive B. This caused the drive head-thrashing I'd been trying to avoid. When the operation was complete, this file was moved to Drive B. This whole process obviously took longer than it would have taken to do the compression just on Drive A. I consider this behaviour sub-optimal. Please will you modify File-roller's behaviour to create it tmp file on the destination drive? Thank you. ** Affects: file-roller (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1241784 Title: File roller creates tmp file on source drive regardless of where the file destination is To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/file-roller/+bug/1241784/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 733374] Re: X freeze, nvidia-current, Ubuntu 11.04 Maverick GeForce 9600GT
I think this may be an nVidia issue. I just got the beta update to 304.48 of the nVidia binary blob and the lockups have suddenly stopped on my system. [Bug 733374] Re: X freeze, nvidia-current, Ubuntu 11.04 Maverick GeForce 9600GT
This bug is killing me. It started around 11.04 and is still present in 12.04 for me. I'm running the binary nVidia driver (Machine has a Quadro FX1600m). Something seems to have changed as recently this has started dumping my session (Cinnamon 2D) out to login rather than just locking the machine solid. It used to be that only the Second Life (SL) viewers were affected by this (I use the firestorm viewer that can be downloaded from http://www.phoenixviewer.com). A curiosity is that the screen generally flashes to black before it crashes and returns with textures from other windows (like title bars) baked into the 3D environment within Second Life. When you quit Second Life, it save a copy of your current view as the last location photo. If I quit before it crashes while the stolen textures are on the screen, they are saved as part of the photo. This might have various implications. Unfortunately, the change isn't all positive as now (since 12.04) the lockups are happening when using normal desktop apps instead of just Second Life. This is happening on a daily basis and is becoming very annoying. I tried installing Fedora 17 on my other HD and it seemed to run fine without this problem. Another strangeness which I don't know if it relaed is that since 11.04, my Second Life frame rate is going down. If I run it in Ubuntu, I get 10 FPS (often 1 FPS) but when I tried Mint Maya Cinnamon I get 25FPS. In Ubuntu, I tried Unity, Unity 2D, Gnome, XFCE and LXDE with only LXDE producing vaguely acceptable frame rates. This makes me ask the question What is it that has changed on Ubuntu that is common to Unity, Gnome and XFCE but isn't in LXDE? I got the following dmesg from the lockup I just had: [28068.719328] NVRM: Xid (:01:00): 6, PE0001 [28088.780505] ecryptfs_decrypt_page: Error attempting to read lower page; rc = [-4] [28088.780509] ecryptfs_readpage: Error decrypting page; rc = [-4] [28107.454335] delay: estimated 133, actual 0 I use an encrypted home folder and swap. [Bug 992488] Re: Since update to kernel 3.2.0-24-generic-pae, system intermittently crashes on shutdown
I've noticed last evening that the point at which the hang up occurs is not always the same. It seems to be around the time the screen gets blanked prior to shutdown and is sometimes before and sometimes after the drive spins down. [Bug 992488] Re: Since update to kernel 3.2.0-24-generic-pae, system intermittently crashes on shutdown
Hi Joseph, Thank you for your help. I feel like I'm really learning something here :) I tried 3.3.4, 3.4 RC 4 amd 3.4 RC 5 and didn't get the problem but I'm reluctant to mark this as fixed upstream... I've rebooted a couple of times with 3.2.0 during the process and it isn't misbehaving either. I've not been able to install the nVidia binary blob with the Additional Drivers tool under 3.4 (the installation fails) so I've not been able to run my heaviest duty graphical application (the Firestorm 4.0.1 client for the Second Life virtual world http://www.phoenixviewer.com). I've long suspected the nVidia closed source driver has been involved in most of the crashes I've had. [Bug 992488] [NEW] Since update to kernel 3.2.0-24-generic-pae, system intermittently crashes on shutdown
Public bug reported: Hi, On my Dell Precision M6300 laptop running Gnome Classic desktop, the machine intermittently fails to shut down and hangs (total lock up, CAPS lock not responsive) with the power still on. The shutdown sequence aparently proceeds normally then I hear the hard drive park and spin down and the machine black-screens and locks solid rather than performing a power off. Unfortunately, since the drives have spun down, there's nothing recorded in the logs to indicate what happened. I'm happy to perform any tests requested and I consider my skill level reasonable but I don't know how to narrow the cause of this down on my own. 12.04 Beta 2 worked fine. This is a new bahaviour since I removed it, did a clean install of 12.04 and performed an update. I've had every release since Intrepid on this machine and I've not seen anything similar before. The headset has switches built into the cord which tell the computer to change the headset volume or mute its mic. From my point of view, the perfect solution would be one that spotted that the buttons were on the same USB device as one of my soundcards then steered the button data towards the correct mixer or that let me define a binding between devices and mixers manually. I believe it's possible to use uDev to make sure the same USB network card always gets the same interface name regardless of which port it's connected to or the order it's plugged in. Could something similar be done here? Thanks, Paul. - Everyone is raving about the all-new Yahoo! [Bug 66918] Repeated MBR corruption on ICH6 machine
Public bug reported: I have an Acer 4100WLMi laptop (spec at http://surrey.lug.org.uk/cgi- bin/wiki.pl?TravelMate4100WLMi ) I have increased the RAM from thsi spec to 1.25GB. I have had 4 incidences of the MBR on my boot drive (hda) ceasing to be readable (BIOS produces Operating System Not Present error at bootstrap) I installed wine (0.9.9-0ubuntu2) then installed DVD Decrypter 3.5.4.0 and DVD Shrink 3.2. I recreated the DOS device for the DVD drive and selected NT4.0 as Mr.Bass says. I now have 2 problems: 1) Neither DVD Decrypter nor DVD Shrink can see the DVD drive (hdb). I tried using hdb=ide-scsi but then nothing could see it! 2) This is the bad one... When I go into DVD Decrypter and try the different IO optons to scan for the DVD drive the MBR of hda gets trashed (BIOS reports No Operating System Found at bootstrap) and I have to boot off the an install disc and do a grub-install hda to to make the drive bootable again. Here's what I know or suspect. * My machine is an Acer Travelmate 4100WLMi with an Intel ICH6 chipset * Every time this has occured I have been performing an activity with the DVD drive. * I have had this happen twice in Ubuntu Dapper (once with DVD Decrypter, once burning a DVD with nautilus) and twice with MEPIS 6.0 so I would suspect that it is related to one of the common Ubuntu components between the distros. * The DVD drive is hdb so it shares a bus with the HDD * This never happened with Breezy so it's probably something that changed between Breezy and Dapper. * On boot there is a string of about 9 errors something to do with not being able to allocate a region of the PCI bridge (I think the messages were that region 7,8,9 could not be allocated from :000:00.0,1,2 but they happen before logging starts so never get written in the logs.) * I'm doing this from a mortal user account so I shouldn't be able to write the MBR. I therefore suspect either a kernel or IDE driver bug. These are the only abnormal entries I found in messages at about the right time but I think they're not relevant: Oct 18 10:07:14 localhost kernel: [17179916.948000] ABORTED IN=eth0 OUT= MAC=00: c0:9f:91:2f:ea:00:80:42:11:27:21:08:00 SRC=3.44.123.122 DST=3.4.208.108 LEN=54 T OS=0x00 PREC=0x00 TTL=255 ID=23069 DF PROTO=TCP SPT=80 DPT=3885 SEQ=3159725861 A CK=0 WINDOW=32768 RES=0x00 RST URGP=0 Oct 18 10:07:16 localhost kernel: [17179918.248000] ABORTED IN=eth0 OUT= MAC=00: c0:9f:91:2f:ea:00:80:42:11:27:21:08:00 SRC=3.44.123.122 DST=3.4.208.108 LEN=54 T OS=0x00 PREC=0x00 TTL=255 ID=23079 DF PROTO=TCP SPT=80 DPT=1495 SEQ=756608386 AC K=0 WINDOW=32768 RES=0x00 RST URGP=0 ** Affects: Ubuntu Importance: Undecided Status: Unconfirmed -- Repeated MBR corruption on ICH6 machine https://launchpad.net/bugs/66918 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 59660] Gnome-media Volume Applet controls wrong device when volume control in USB headset is operated
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: gnome-media Distro: Ubuntu Dapper 6.06 Package: gnome-media 2.14.2-0ubuntu1 Application: Volume Applet 2.14.3 using Gstreamer 0.10 Background: I have a Logitech Premium USB Headset 350 (http://www.logitech.com/index.cfm/products/details/GB/EN,CRID=103,CONTENTID=10013) It includes volume and mic mute buttons in the cord. When I click the volume buttons the Gnome Volume Applet OSD appears and the bar inside it reflects the changes I am requesting with the buttons but the headset volume does not change. Opening the applet reveals that the master volume on my laptop's ICH6 on-board device is being changed rather than the volume of the USB headset. If I explicitly set the Logitech device I can set the volume by dragging the slider inside the Volume Applet but not with the buttons or the quick volume slider that appears if I click the applet icon. ** Affects: gnome-media (Ubuntu) Importance: Untriaged Status: Unconfirmed -- Gnome-media Volume Applet controls wrong device when volume control in USB headset is operated https://launchpad.net/bugs/59660 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
