[Bug 855257] Re: Tomboy cannot be setup to synchronize notes

2011-09-20 Thread PeterPall
Did find a temporary solution:
 - close tomboy
 - Make sure you are logged in into ubuntu one e.G. using
ubuntuone-control-panel-gtk
 - start gconf-editor
 - select the key /apps/tomboy/sync/sync_selected_service_addin
 - change it's value to the following word: ubuntuone
 - close gconf-editor
 - start tomboy
 - preferences/sync preferences
 - synchronize now
 - sync Works.

[Bug 855257] [NEW] Tomboy cannot be setup to synchronize notes

2011-09-20 Thread PeterPall
Public bug reported:

On my system if I choose "Ubuntu one" as synchronization service in tomboy the
button that sould read "connect to server" is grayed out and reads "Already
Registered".
I am logged in to ubuntu one using ubuntuone-control-panel-gtk. So that would
be plausible. Only that if I press "Synchronize now" in tomboy's main menu
tomboy tells me that synchronization is not configured - and in the
synchronization preferences I see that "tomboy notes" is chosen as sync service
and - of course - unconfigured.

Did want to give it another try since on my android phone the app
"chalk" does do the job.

Kind regards,

   Gunter.

[Bug 550625] Re: Alps touchpad is recognized but synaptics clients and scrolling do not work

2011-08-22 Thread PeterPall
One of the last kernel updates for oneiric seems to have changed
something: The last time I looked at my dmesg my touchpad was recognized
as a touchpad. Now it is recognized by the kernel as a generic PS/2
wheel mouse again.

[Bug 789452] Re: Transition from pygth to python-gobject necessary in the long term

** Summary changed:

+ Transition from pygth to python-gobject necessary in the long term

** Description changed:

The next version of ubuntu will switch to gnome3.

- According to synaptic backintime-gnome seems to be using pygtk. And according
to http://blog.rabbitvcs.org/archives/293 pygtk will never be ported to gnome3.
He normally is very well-informed as he is the maintainer of nautilus-python
and rabbitvcs.
- http://www.pygtk.org/ does approve that pygtk will no more be actively
develop but does not tell about it being not supported at all in gnome3:
"Existing authors of PyGTK applications are also recommended to port their
applications to PyGObject to take advantage of new features appearing in GTK-3
and beyond." so I don't know if porting is immediately necessary or if it will
be in the far future.

2011-07-30 Thread PeterPall
Your idea with brcm80211 is right: This module *did* work about 3 months
ago for me - but has ceased to work for me since then-

Today there was an update of the kernel my system is currently running.
Don't know if a mere update of an already installed kernel should
trigger a rebuilt of the bcmwl kernel module, but it didn't. Will attach
the log file from this to the current comment.

[Bug 527890] Re: ALPS touchpad in HP Mini 311 not configurable/recognized as a touchpad

2011-07-28 Thread PeterPall
Did try a plain vanilla kernel from:
http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline
My Ubuntu kernel recognizes the touchpad as a touchpad but leaves it
unconfigurable and with a tapping feature that is too sensitive for me. The
plain vanilla kernel recognizes the touchpad as a generic PS/2 Mouse but lets
it come up with a less sensitive tap and enabled edge scrolling.
I personally think plain vanilla is more usable for now.

[Bug 810653] Re: Gestures won't work on HP/Compaq mini 311 touchpad

2011-07-28 Thread PeterPall
Did send the wrong comment to the wrong bug, but part of the contents
still applies: The Ubuntu patches seem to affect how the touchpad is
recognized by the system. And they at least make sure it is recognized
as a touchpad even if they until configuring the touchpad works make it
tendentially less usable.

But this does the opposite of answering the question if this is a X or
an kernel bug. If anybody does know please reassign this bug at will.

[Bug 810653] Re: Gestures won't work on HP/Compaq mini 311 touchpad

2011-07-28 Thread PeterPall
Did install a plain vanilla kernel from
http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline
After that the touchpad behaves much better (less sensitivity and vertical edge
scroll is enabled) but it is recognized as a PS/2 mouse with a generic wheel by
the kernel and thus not configurable.

But if I can decide if I use a non-configurable touchpad that defaults
to a configuration that is barely usable or a non-configureable device
that at least works - my choice is plain vanilla.

Thanks a lot,

 Gunter.

[Bug 810653] Re: Gestures won't work on HP/Compaq mini 311 touchpad

2011-07-26 Thread PeterPall
tuxinvader seems to has found the reason for this problem (see Bug
#527890). Seems to be a kernel bug after all; Will copy the relevant
part of the text here and then try to find out how to reassign this bug
to the kernel:

Hi all,

I was asked to be help some one get vertical scroll working on their HP,
so I've just blown the dust of mine and installed Natty. Vertical Scroll
still broken by default :-(

The problem with scrolling is Ubuntu specific. Kernel.org kernels should
just work.

Ubuntu patches add support for a Dell Precision 4500. There is a lot of
additional code in there for making the Dell work, but it uses a similar
touchpad to the HP (same vendor/product IDs) and that is what breaks
vertical scrolling on the HP.

[Bug 816594] [NEW] bcmwl isn't built for the new kernel on kernel update

2011-07-26 Thread PeterPall
Public bug reported:

Will watch at the next kernel update if it isn't built at all - or just
for the wrong kernel.

Description of the oroblem: After the last 3 kernel updates the wifi of my
netbook did no more work. Since
modprobe wl
did tell me that there is no such module. The solution was easy, though:
sudo dpkg-reconfigure bcmwl-kernel-source
and afterwards a reboot or a
sudo modprobe wl
sudo service network-manager restart

[Bug 810653] Re: Gestures won't work on HP/Compaq mini 311 touchpad

2011-07-24 Thread PeterPall
** Description changed:

- Gestures alone wouldn't be this big a problem. But syndaemon won't work
- either making typing a consistent piece of text harder than it should
- be; There already has been a bug report for this issue (Bug #527890) but
- it has been closed since it was filed against a series that is no more
- supported.
+ The touchpad of the HP Mini 311 seems to be recognized as a touchpad. It
partially seems to work, too: I can move the mouse pointer and if I tap on the
touchpad this is recognized as a click. This feature tends to be rather
hysterical, though, so for a few weeks now I am trying to tell the touchpad to
disable tap-on-click while typing. All tools that could help there I am aware
of (syndaemon, gnome-mouse-properties, syncmd) seem to know that my touchpad is
a touchpad and offer me to change configuration parameters. syncmd even shows
the altered value for the parameters afterwards if I try to read them back.
+ The problem now is that no matter what I am doing my tries to change the
sensitivity, gesture, tapping, scroll or any other part of the touchpad's
behavior seem to be completely ignored by the touchpad itself: It always stays
in the default mode (No two-finger-scroll, no edge or circular scroll, default
sensitivity and click-on-tap is enabled).
+ There already has been a bug report for this issue (Bug #527890) but it is
now closed since it was filed against a series of Ubuntu that is no more
supported.

[Bug 815414] [NEW] Thumbnail quality poor for images with high aspect ratio

2011-07-24 Thread PeterPall
Public bug reported:

Priority of this bug: Low
Problem: Hugin is a application that automagically merges several small images
to a big one which allows for easy generation of panorama images without
statives or other specialized hardware. These fotos inport and display well
with shotwell. But if I create a big panorama image that is ten times as wide
as it is high the shotwell thumbnail is rather blurry. So I thought I report
this bug.

[Bug 815367] [NEW] hugin becomes unresponsible if "load buttons" is pressed before "tip of the day" appears

2011-07-24 Thread PeterPall
Public bug reported:

Priority: Low
Problem: If on starting hugin the "load files" button is pressed before the
"Tip of the Day" dialog appears hugin becomes unresponsive - and cannot be
closed by the "close" button.
Possible solution: Rempve the "modal" flag from the "Tip of the Day" dialog:
There is no need to make sure that the whole application is halted as long as
the Tip of the Day is displayed.

Supposedly it will at least reduce the number of open bugs. If it won't I think
somebody will find a better idea.
for the meantime I think adding all the old releases to this bug is
Doing the Right Thing.

Interestingly enough
synclient VertEdgeScroll=1
makes synclient report that VertEdgeScroll is really '1'. Only that vertical
edge scrolling still doesn't work afterwards.

I think cleaning up all the old bugs using an automatic script that
looks if the bug was originally reported against a series that is
nowadays extremely old is not a bad idea. Did file Bug #810653 so the
problem won't get lost - that still affects me on oneiric.

[Bug 802197] Re: no sysfs entry in /etc/mtab breaks encrypted-home

2011-06-27 Thread PeterPall
Only if to make sure that everybody has a workaround for the time the fix that
addresses the real problem is published and distributed:
A temporary workaround that users affected by this bug could apply would be

- Open a terminal and type
sudo gedit /etc/fstab
- Now a editor window opens. Add the following line to the end of the text this
window contains:
sys /sys sysfs
- Save and close the editor.
- Done
After a reboot the sys filesystem is mounted by a different mechanism that
during mounting it automatically adds the information about this to /etc/mtab.

[Bug 802167] Re: Can't check if kernel supports ecryptfs

Perhaps found the real reason for the problem now:

ecryptfs-unwrap-passphrase /home/.ecryptfs/gunter/.ecryptfs/wrapped-passphrase
Passphrase:
XX
root@calcula:/home# ecryptfs-add-passphrase --fnek
Passphrase: [entered the passphrase from above here]
Error: Your kernel does not support filename encryption

Why this error message did happen?

Thanks a lot!
In the meantime I have installed libpam-encfs - with no visible effect.

ecryptfs-recover-private returns the following error message:

inserted auth-tok with sig [XXX] into the user session keyring
ERROR: The key required to access this private data is not available.

2011-06-26 Thread PeterPall
Perhaps found the real reason of this problem: Something has installed
libpam-encfy on update.
There really should be a mechanism that prevents from completely uninstalling
vital systems like all package managers, locale support - or this one too
easily.

[Bug 799596] [NEW] flat xml format inaccuracy

2011-06-19 Thread PeterPall
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: libreoffice

The flat XML formats of LibreOffice are very practical when working with
version control systems like svn, mercurial, bazaar or cvs.

In lodraw saving files in the .fodt format seems currently to loose
information, though:
After saving the file attached to this bug as flat xml and re-opening it
 - the drawing is no longer aligned to the grid
 - and some texts have whitespace attached that being of a much higher vertical
size than the rest of the text (I think it was 12pt versus 6pt) ruin the layout.

If the file is saved in the .odt format in the ordinary .odt format
instead on opening it will just look as it did before saving the file
instead.

Did try to convert the application.
Most of the gtk functions seem not ho have changed their name. But the gnome.*
and vfs.* functions have. The latter seem to have moved to Gio. But I cannot
find
mime_type = gnomevfs.get_mime_type( gnomevfs.escape_path_string( path )
)
and
gnome_props = { gnome.PARAM_APP_DATADIR : '/usr/share' }
gnome.program_init( 'backintime', cfg.VERSION, properties = gnome_props )

[Bug 435137] Re: size of log files should be controlled

2011-04-29 Thread PeterPall
I was always wondering what spins up my hard disk every 2 minutes. Now I
created a file named ~/.config/ubuntuone/logging.conf with the following
contents:

[logging]
level = ERROR

Did have to restart ubuntuone sync to make the change being applied
(u1sdtool -q; u1sdtool -c). But afterwards the problem was fixed for me.

[Bug 771565] Re: batch export feature sometimes unresponsive

2011-04-29 Thread PeterPall
This request was a good one:

I am currently working mainly with four files that contain too much
private data so i cannot give them away and had this problem constantly
even in old openoffice times.

When I tried to reproduce the problem with trivial files containing the words
"Test 1" and "Test 2" the problem didn't occour, though. So i did a
cat /dev/random|hd > test.txt
converted the output of this command to the odt format - and have not been able
to reproduce this problem either. But I found another hint what can cause it:

The problem is not constantly there. It rather seems like something in
files with a complex document structure may keep libreoffice for long
enough that whoever talks to it runs into a timeout. At least pyconvert
and unoconv do so on my netbook - where the low CPU power tends to make
things like this more probable.

Will try to find a reliable way of triggering the problem and will add
another comment to this bug as soon as i can provide more solid
information.

[Bug 772961] [NEW] laptop-mode outputs data to syslog that causes hard drive spinups

2011-04-28 Thread PeterPall
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: laptop-mode-tools

Om ny system every about three minutes syslogd wake up the hard disk to
write the following lines:

Apr 29 08:03:33 localhost laptop-mode: Laptop mode
Apr 29 08:03:33 localhost laptop-mode: enabled,
Apr 29 08:03:33 localhost laptop-mode: active [unchanged]

As a temporary measure I have moved /var/log to a tmpfs - which isn't a
bad idea to save power anyway. But it feels strange that laptop-mode in
its default configuration is a common cause for hard disk spinups.

[Bug 772537] [NEW] odfflatxmlimport.xsl: Running an XSLT 1.0 stylesheet with an XSLT 2.0 processor

2011-04-28 Thread PeterPall
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: libreoffice

When using flat xml formats (which are very useful when using
libreoffice with versiion control systems like Mercurial, Bazaar,
Subversion or similar) on saving or opening files always outputs one of
the following warnings to the console:

Warning: at xsl:stylesheet on line 2 of

Replacing the line that reads:
http://www.w3.org/1999/XSL/Transform";>
by a line that reads

in both files fixes the problem.

[Bug 771565] [NEW] batch export feature conflicts with gui

2011-04-26 Thread PeterPall
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: libreoffice

Libreoffice contains two documented ways of batch-exporting .odt or .doc-files
as pdf, text or any other format libreoffice is capable of wtiting of:
 - running a macro that might be contained in a separate file
 - or using the libreoffice sweet as a server and controlling it using the uno
bindings.
Many batch converters like pyconvert and unoconv use this method.
Anyhow it seems like these features somehow conflict with normal use of
libreoffice:

if libreoffice is already opened when trying to run it as a server it seems
like
 - libreoffice refuses to starts a separate process for the server
 - but failes to start the server on the already running process:
All I can get from tools like unoconv if libreoffice is already running in GUI
mode seems to be a blank page.

If I start the server first converting documents in batch mode works really
fast. But this approach leaves me with two options that both have their
disadvantages:
 - If I run the libreoffice server in GUI mode it works only as long as a
libreoffice window is open. And really opens all files that are about to be
converted in separate gui windows.
 - Invisible mode really feels like a batch converter, doesn't clutter the
desktop with windows and is real fast. But if a libreoffice server is running
in invisible mode libreoffice won't open a window even if you try to open
documents from command line or by double-clicking on them.

Please reassign this bug to the correct package at will.

[Bug 759184] Re: unoconv fails: "Unable to start listener"

2011-04-14 Thread PeterPall
Did try both the trunk and v0.4. They both work fine;
The question about the advantages of using autoconf for a python project is a
good one which is the reason I asked before doing anything: The makefile
included with the project does what it is expected to do. And any autoconf
beast consists of about 5 files that have to be updated every time autoconf
changes. In return for that Configure would complain about missing packages
even before the makefile is run.

** Summary changed:

- unoconv fails: "Unable to start listener"

Works like magic ;-)

When will it be included in Ubuntu 11.04 (The first ubuntu version that
uses libreoffice and thus needs the new version)?

And - seems like it still uses a "normal" makefile - do you want me to
write automake/autoconf/autoheader/autosomething- scripts for the next
version of the tool?

[Bug 760214] [NEW] odt2txt lacks support for flat xml formats

2011-04-13 Thread PeterPall
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: odt2txt

Please add support for the flat xml formats from libreoffice to odt2txt.

Background:
Normally the files produces by openoffice are a zip-archive containing a
directory tree that represents the document object model of the file. In other
words it contains a direcory structure with
 - a file containing the text
 - cascading stylesheets containing the formatting
 - and all images included inside the file
This is a rather elegant structure and saves space on the hard disk since the
file is compressed.

If you work with version control (Bazaar, Subversion, Mercurial and the
like) this compression has a drawback, though: Normally version control
only keeps track of all the changes that occour to a file. And normally
only a small portion of a big file changes at once. But if the file is
compressed - changes are high that evenaltering a single byte will
change the whole compressed file.

To avoid this problem libreoffice allows to save documents as "flat XML
file" (.fodt, .fods etc.) which is a uncompressed xml file containing
the whole document object model the zip archive would. But they allow
for effective version control which makes them useful enough that an
easy way of converting them would make sense.

Seems like the program unoconv should be searching for was
/usr/lib/libreoffice/program/soffice.bin.

[Bug 759184] [NEW] unoconv fails: "Unable to start listener"

2011-04-12 Thread PeterPall
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: unoconv

On my System (Natty/Libreoffice) unoconf tries to start soffice.bin from
loads of directories. But my system only contains a soffice folder
without ".bin".

The naive approach of doing a
sudo ln -s /usr/bin/soffice /usr/bin/soffice.bin

results in an error message telling that soffice.bin.bin cannot be
found. But this error message seems to be issued by the script
/usr/bin/soffice

[Bug 727370] Re: Contacts not syncing with my computer

2011-04-11 Thread PeterPall
Very interesting:

$ killall -9 e-addressbook-factory
$ /usr/lib/evolution/e-addressbook-factory

Fixed the problem only for the current session for me even if I used it
for months.

$ killall -9 e-addressbook-factory
$ export COUCHDB_DEBUG_MESSAGES=1
$ /usr/lib/evolution/e-addressbook-factory

has fixed the problem completely.

[Bug 753047] Re: Ubuntu One address book not working in Evolution

2011-04-11 Thread PeterPall
Very interesting:

This problem persisted for me for months. It could be temporary fixed by

- logging in
- waiting until the network is up
$ killall -9 e-addressbook-factory
$ /usr/lib/evolution/e-addressbook-factory
- waiting for about 10 seconds
- and starting evolution only then.

but the fix would not persist until the next log-in.

Today I did run

$ killall -9 e-addressbook-factory
$ export COUCHDB_DEBUG_MESSAGES=1
$ /usr/lib/evolution/e-addressbook-factory

...and since then my couchdb addressbook has started working even after
restarting the computer. Will watch it for the next few days and see if
it really fixed the actual problem - or this time it worked by a pure
accident.

[Bug 727370] Re: Contacts not syncing with my computer

2011-04-11 Thread PeterPall
On my computer it is sufficient to do a

$ killall -9 e-addressbook-factory
$ /usr/lib/evolution/e-addressbook-factory

and to wait about 10 seconds prior to starting evolution to be able to see the
contacts.
But I have to repeat these steps every time i log in to my computer.

Since the above commands won't help if the network connection isn't running it
somehow looks like something is starting e-addressbook-factory before the
network is up and e-addressbook-factory won't recover from this;
Any try to copy all contacts from the couchdb to the local addressbook will
still result in a timeout , though.

[Bug 671507] Re: Evolution lost Ubuntu One contacts, there still in the Couchdb database though

2011-03-10 Thread PeterPall
Ok... found a workaround for my system:

- Close evolution
- killall e-addressbook-factory
- /usr/lib/evolution/e-addressbook--factory
- Start up evolution again.

...and all ubuntuone addressses will be there until the next reboot.

[Bug 575937] Re: Can't synchronize Tomboy Notes: Server returned 404 NOT FOUND

2011-03-05 Thread PeterPall
Had to recover my tomboy again from this bug - which I triggered by
making my couchdb reauthenticate at the ubuntu one server by the
standard method from freedesktop.org. Hoped it would repair contact
sync. But at least found a way to recover tomboy that is relatively
easy:

- Start gconf-editor
- unset the key /apps/tomboy/sync/sync_selected_service_admin
- unset all keys in /apps/tomboy/sync/ubuntuone
- Restart tomboy
- Set up syncing with ubuntu one again from tomboy.
