I suspect I experience the same problem with a Vivobook Go. I got
messages like "[174397.518333] [drm:link_enc_cfg_validate [amdgpu]]
*ERROR* link_enc_cfg_validate: Invalid link encoder assignments - 0x1c"
in dmesg and the screen go black and stay like that for a while
regularly.

[Bug 1850778] [NEW] Audio output changes to hdmi after hibernate

2019-10-31 Thread Petter Sundlöf
Public bug reported:

This wasn't present in 19.04:

When returning from hibernate, audio devices is changed to hdmi (gp104 device),
which is not even plugged in. When playing audio and changing volume one has to
go into volume settings or pavucontrol to change the output/controlled device
back to "Line out".
Disabling "module-switch-on-port-available" is not an option because that
disable automatic switching to headphone output.

I've tried disabling the gp104 device in pavucontrol, but this has no effect,
it keeps switching to it.
This is not specific to the nvidia driver's gp104 hdmi output though, to be
clear, because the same thing happened when I had pulseaudio-dlna active -- it
switched to those devices after wake, which was even worse because playing
audio on the computer after a wake-from-sleep kept launching my
chromecast/other dlna devices in my apartment.

Tried to resume, and was greeted with this (attached photo).

It then threw me back to the display manager (lightdm?) where I had to
enter password, then the mutter/window manager's unlock screen opened
and I had to enter password again. No crash this time but very odd
behaviour

[Bug 1761739] Re: Submits a message to a remote server even when "No, don't send any info" is selected

2018-10-24 Thread Petter Reinholdtsen
The fact that you claim to not log or store the IP address is beside my
point, which is that the IP address is _transferred_ out of the machine
even when the user said no to submitting any information. If consent is
your legal basis for submitting information to Ubuntu, it is not valid
for transferring the 'I do not want information to be submitted' message
over HTTP, independent of what story you provide on what you do with the

[Bug 1761739] Re: Submits a message to a remote server even when "No, don't send any info" is selected

2018-10-19 Thread Petter Reinholdtsen
Of course IP information is sent. Any HTTP connection will pass on the
IP address of the other end during establishment of its TCP/IP
connection. The fact that HTTP is used over TCP is enough to send the
IP address. It could be avoided by enforcing the use of Tor or similar,
but that is purely academic given that most people are not using a
service to hide their IP address.

[Bug 1761739] Re: Submits a message to a remote server even when "No, don't send any info" is selected

2018-10-19 Thread Petter Reinholdtsen
Note, with the current privacy regulations, if Canonical uses consent as
the base for submitting this information for collection, I am quite sure
it would be against the law to send IP address to a Canonical server
when consent is missing. Sending IP address provides time, location
and the fact that a given version of Ubuntu is being installed to
Ubuntu, and every network sniffing entity on the way like NSA and GCHQ.
This set of information is by definition personal information, and by
combining the IP address with other sources it is often possible to
identify the individual uniquely (for example if the user uses Facebook,
log into her email etc). As consent is obviously missing if the user
declined to submit the information about his machine, Canonical would
have to come up with another basis for the collection. It would be hard
to argue it is vital for the operation of the service provided, one of
the other options for data collection. It is probably a good idea to
check out the GDPR provisions available, to reduce the chance of a large
fine.

[Bug 1781544] Re: gdm3 still hangs on hibernate resume

2018-07-13 Thread Petter Sundlöf
BAH! Seems this is another nvidia-driver issue. Resume works with
xserver-xorg-video-nouveau.
But is nvidia-driver officially supported? And what things might gdm3 be doing
differently than lightdm to trigger a resume video driver freeze?

[Bug 1781544] Re: gdm3 still hangs on hibernate resume

2018-07-13 Thread Petter Sundlöf
I applied that workaround, but no crash files have appeared in /var/crash. To
be clear, this bug pertains to hibernate resume only.
The screen simply blanks out. What happens is also that I can slowly, glacially
interact with the keyboard's Num and Scroll lock toggles (leds). However, I'm
not able to go into a virtual terminal or affect the display at all.

This all works perfectly in lightdm. I'm not sure what gdm3 is doing
that is causing this freeze/or strange behaviour. I'm not having any
luck seeing any useful info in system logs

[Bug 1781544] [NEW] gdm3 still hangs on hibernate resume

2018-07-13 Thread Petter Sundlöf
Public bug reported:

Having updated to latest gdm3 with various hibernate fixes. gdm3

[Bug 1734839] [NEW] ncmpcpp in artful fails to connect

2017-11-28 Thread Petter Adsen
Public bug reported:

ncmpcpp:
  Installed: 0.7.4-1build3
  Candidate: 0.7.4-1build3
  Version table:
 *** 0.7.4-1build3 500
500 http://no.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu artful/universe amd64 Packages
100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

When I start ncmpcpp, I am met with the message "ncmpcpp: connection
refused", but there is no sign of this in mpd.log on the server. On my
zesty machine it works perfectly, even though it is using the same
version of the package, and both are using the exact same config file
(copied across with scp). Other mpd clients like gmpc works fine from
the artful machine.

The really weird thing is that if I launch it with 'ncmpcpp -h hostname
-p 6600' it works.

I have double- and triple-checked the config file, including rewriting
it all by hand and removing everything non-essential. I also tried
upgrading to v0.8.1 from
https://launchpad.net/~aguignard/+archive/ubuntu/ppa, but that gives the
same result.

The only thing I can think of is that something must have changed from
zesty to artful to cause this, but it's beyond me to figure out what.
Something in the dependencies (libbost?), maybe.

Should I file this upstream, or is there something else I can try? I
really want to avoid switching to another mpd client.

Welcome. :)

At least I am happy with the amount of information flowing in these
channels. All commits are automatically send to the list, for those
with time and interest to review, and all bug reports and discussions
are sent there too. But most important, everyone in the group seem to
welcome contributions from interested and skilled people. The team is
short on man-power, as is most teams of course, but everyone is doing as
good as we can.

My main problem is personal, I lack the required spare time to
contribute technically, and so far has mostly helped by guiding the
package through the NEW queue and commiting a few translations. :)

Aha. I misunderstood what to look for in git. I do not know anything

You can find out who commited what in the Debian package by looking in
the package maintenance git repository available from
http://anonscm.debian.org/gitweb/?p=pkg-zfsonlinux/zfs.git >.

There is also the pkg-zfsonlinux-de...@lists.alioth.debian.org mailing
list and the #debian-zfs IRC channel on irc.debian.org. I believe we
would all be very happy to see more people there. This is where the
package maintenance is being coordinated and discussed in Debian.

> Was there a particular reason for this massive change, and was it

As far as I can see from the git repository, there was no 'change',
there was an 'addition', where to fix BTS report #848157 a file was
added to /usr/share/initramfs-tools/conf.d/.

When I try to login to Unity 8 (not default), the login process never

[Bug 1469753] Re: No man page, inconsistent files, application doesn't work

2016-09-25 Thread Petter Reinholdtsen
Hi. I use this package a lot and find it super useful. It do not work
with all DVDs, but most of the ones I have tested. The problem you
report about failing DVDs with overlap in the data structures is
reported to Debian as https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-
bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=818117 . It only affect a minority of my DVD
collection.

I agree it would be useful with a manual page.

Update: 'snap find .' works, so the immediate problem is solved. Still,
if 'apt list' can return 50k+ packages, I don't see why 'snap find'
can't return 100.

[Bug 1609368] Re: 'snap find' no longer lists all available snaps

2016-08-03 Thread Petter Adsen
As to "never what the user wanted", I beg to differ - it was _exactly_
what I wanted :) 'apt list' will list all available packages, I expected
'snap find' to behave in a similar matter.

If this feature is now gone, that is sad IMHO. I hope at least the
documentation can be updated to reflect this.

Is there anywhere else a complete list of available snaps can be found?

[Bug 1529454] [NEW] dm-tool add-nested-seat fails

2015-12-27 Thread Petter Adsen
Public bug reported:

On Wily, updated daily:

petter@odin:~$ ac policy lightdm
lightdm:
  Installed: 1.16.6-0ubuntu1
  Candidate: 1.16.6-0ubuntu1

petter@odin:~$ dm-tool add-nested-seat
Unable to add seat: GDBus.Error:org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.Failed: Failed to
start seat

I was hoping to get a nested X server with lightdm, but the Xephyr
windows briefly opens and then closes again. I have tried this on two
different installations of Wily with the same results. If I try to start
Xephyr manually and then start lightdm on it with 'dm-tool add-
local-x-seat' then dm-tool fails with exactly the same error message as
above.

[Bug 1525105] [NEW] yubikey login segfaults /bin/login

2015-12-11 Thread Petter Adsen
Public bug reported:

I received a Yubikey 4 yesterday, and attempted to set up authentication
with it on my Wily system. After installing the necessary packages, I
ran 'dpkg-reconfigure libpam-yubico' and added my ID number and key.
When I now try to log in on a VC, I first enter my username, then I get
prompted for my Yubikey. I press the button on the key and immediately
get thrown back to a VC with a login prompt and the following message in
the log:

[1805628.239225] login[29456]: segfault at 0 ip 7f16bcb0030f sp
7f16b1d0a540 error 4 in libc-2.21.so[7f16bca84000+1c]

Logins via SSH work, however; I get prompted for the Yubikey, press the
button, enter password at the next prompt and I'm logged in. It seems
authentication methods that do not open a network connection work, since
if I edit /etc/pam.d/common-auth to use challenge-response
authentication instead it works fine. The problem is that this will not
work with a remote SSH connection as it requires hardware access.

(I tried upgrading to the packages in ppa:yubico/stable, but there was
no difference - /bin/login still segfaults. I reverted to the original
Wily packages and tried again before filing this bug.)

[Bug 1466796] [NEW] Deselects selection when Trim Whitespace is enabled

2015-06-19 Thread Petter Adsen
Public bug reported:

When both Trim Whitespace and Synchronize clipboards are enabled in
Preferences, and a selection is made either in an urxvt or in an GTK
application (Qt applications not tested), the selection is immediately
deselected again. It is, however, copied to the clipboard and the

[Bug 1447556] Re: AMD radeon hangs/crashes

2015-05-05 Thread Petter Adsen
Look, guys - no offense intended, but I'm just not going to invest that
amount of time in tracking down which commit causes/fixes a bug when I
can just run an unofficial kernel.

If anyone else gets bitten by this and have to run an official Ubuntu-
supplied kernel then I might consider doing it, but since it seems only
I am affected I won't bother. I suggest you close this.

[Bug 1447556] [NEW] AMD radeon hangs/crashes

2015-04-23 Thread Petter Adsen
Public bug reported:

Ubuntu 3.19.0-15.15-generic 3.19.3

On boot, there are error messages from the radeon driver (see dmesg
output), and lightdm fails to start the X server - it simply hangs
without errors. Logging in on the console and running startx works, but
if the screen saver kicks in, the X server hangs again and needs to be
manually killed and restarted.

This started happening after one of the two latest kernel upgrades on
vivid, I didn't reboot after the -14 update, so I don't know whether
that or -15 caused this.

Please contact me If further information is needed, I can't attach more than
one file.

[Bug 1393842] Re: libvirt does not grant qemu-guest-agent channel perms

2015-04-09 Thread Petter Adsen
Do a mkdir -p /var/lib/libvirt/qemu/channel/target/ - that should fix
it. It should have been created on install, but wasn't, and I guess the
package update doesn't create the directory. You might also make sure
that owner and group are set correctly, here they are libvirt-qemu and
kvm, respectively.

[Bug 1432644] Re: VM permanently tries to read /dev/shm/lttng-ust-wait-5

2015-04-02 Thread Petter Adsen
I don't understand how this is going to help, as I don't have/use ceph.
Anyway, the problem still exists. Is there a way to completely disable
apparmor for libvirt temporarily, until a fix can be found, as I
*really* need it to work? Of course I could revert to 14.10, but I am
trying to help find bugs in 15.04, so that's really not an option.

[Bug 1434999] [NEW] Creating a new VM in virt-manager fails because of apparmor permissions

2015-03-22 Thread Petter Adsen
Public bug reported:

When creating a new VM, it fails because of insufficient permissions.
Adding permissions for /dev/shm/lttng-ust-wait-5 and
/var/lib/libvirt/qemu/channel/target to /etc/apparmor.d/abstractions
/libvirt-qemu seems to solve it, although there are still DENIED
messages in the logs:

[ +0,208881] audit: type=1400 audit(1427028845.637:313): apparmor=DENIED
operation=open profile=/usr/lib/libvirt/virt-aa-helper

I know literally nothing about apparmor, but I hope someone who does can
look into this and fix it properly before release of 15.04. Please
contact me if any more information is needed, I will be happy to help as
much as I can.

[Bug 1160188] Re: ATH9K wireless signal weak

2013-07-29 Thread Petter Reinholdtsen
My problem seem to be the one reported as
https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=56301 and the suggested
workaround is to run iw dev wlan0 set power_save off. I'm testing it
now, and the wifi have not died yet. But I am not sure how to trigger
the problem, and it might still show up.

[Bug 1160188] Re: ATH9K wireless signal weak

2013-07-27 Thread Petter Reinholdtsen
On one of my Packard Bell EasyNote LV, the wireless network stop working
some minutes after boot. Only a reboot get it working again. I tried
to use the 3.11 rc2 kernel, but it reintroduced the black screen of
death and thus was not a very good alternative. The machine need
acpi_backlight=vendor in raring to not turn off the screen completely,
and this setting no longer work with v3.11.

One of the other ones have not had this problem, but it might be caused
by it running an earlier raring kernel. I'm testing it again with the
latest kernel version now.

[Bug 1160188] Re: ATH9K wireless signal weak

2013-07-27 Thread Petter Reinholdtsen
I booted the 3.11 kernel (uname said 3.11.0-031100rc2-generic) and used the
Packard Bell EasyNote LV a bit, after
booting it with i915.invert_brightness=1 instead of using the
acpi_backlight=vendor setting, but with this kernel too the network card
stopped working after some minutes. I am not sure, but believe it took a bit
longer than earlier before it locked up.

Any hope of having this problem fixed in an official kernel in raring? It seem
to affect Packard Bell EasyNote LV,
http://www.linlap.com/packard_bell_easynote_lv . The network connection seem
to fall out after a few minutes.

Is there anything I can do to help debug this issue? I left the
installer to do its job automatically, and thus do not know what I could
have done differently.

[Bug 765438] Re: On startup, the backlight is off on laptop

2013-06-05 Thread Petter Reinholdtsen
I believe this problem also affect Packard Bell EasyNote LV. It need
i915.invert_brightness=1 to avoid the black screen of death when
installing Ubuntu and when booting the installed system. With the
setting in place, one can log into Gnome, but when one log into KDE, the
screen is turned off again.

See http://www.linlap.com/packard_bell_easynote_lv for my notes about
Linux on this machine. I've reported the problem to the kernel
developers and as Debian bugs http://bugs.debian.org/710938 and

[Steve Langasek]
So http://mjg59.dreamwidth.org/24869.html explains why you needed to
 pull the hard drive.

Yeah. This really suck!

It does not explain why you would get an error about security
policy. Can you attach the output of the following three commands
 on the affected machine:

 sudo efibootmgr -v
 od -tx1
 /sys/firmware/efi/efivars/SecureBoot-8be4df61-93ca-11d2-aa0d-00e098032b8c
 od -tx1
 /sys/firmware/efi/efivars/SecureBootEnforce-59d1c24f-50f1-401a-b101-f33e0daed443

It is also potentially useful to have the contents of these files attached:
 /sys/firmware/efi/efivars/KEK-8be4df61-93ca-11d2-aa0d-00e098032b8c

[Bug 1184297] [NEW] Secure boot failed, claiming boot is against security policy

2013-05-26 Thread Petter Reinholdtsen
Public bug reported:

I've struggled to install Linux on a Packard Bell EasyNote LV11HC,
without having to accept the Windows 8 license, and my progress is
documented in http://www.linlap.com/packard_bell_easynote_lv . Had to
pull the hard drive and install to a USB stick to be able to get into
the firmware menu and enable the F12 boot menu. After finally being able
to install Ubuntu 13.04 on the hard drive, the UEFI firmware refused to
boot the hard drive, claiming it was against the security policy. I was
able to boot Ubuntu by powering on again and using F12 to pick the hard
drive.

No idea what is wrong, but can help with debugging the next few days
before I switch to legacy BIOS and put it into production.

[Bug 1184297] Re: Secure boot failed, claiming boot is against security policy

2013-05-26 Thread Petter Reinholdtsen
After booting using F12, the machine suddenly started booting directly
from HD without any manual intervention needed. I did install scim in
the mean time, but given that scim-signed already was installed, I doubt
it had any effect on this.

[Bug 192176] Re: Scanner output always JPEG compressed

2013-05-08 Thread Hans Petter Birkeland
Here is simple-scan.log and the resulting PNG in a ZIP file. Also, in
the log file there is a line about jpeg quality. And there is no setting
for compression quality in Preferences. The only quality setting is
Resolution (dpi).

[Bug 192176] Re: Scanner output always JPEG compressed

2013-05-08 Thread Hans Petter Birkeland
Also, from David Suffield's output of 'scanimage -h' above:

 --compression None|JPEG [JPEG]
Selects the scanner compression method for faster scans, possibly at
the expense of image quality.

When I do the same command I only get

--compression JPEG [JPEG]

i.e. I don't get the 'None' option. So it seems uncompressed scans are
not supported for my scanner (HP Photosmart 6510). I find this quite
outrageous, that some devloper has taken the liberty to decide that I
don't need uncompressed scans! Especially since there is AFAIK no
alternative to Sane.

[Bug 192176] Re: Scanner output always JPEG compressed

2013-05-07 Thread Hans Petter Birkeland
I'm returning to this.
I have Xsane 0.998 and hplip 3.12.2. In Xsane's Advanced Options dialog the
only alternative I get for compression is JPEG. It is not possible to set to
none. And if I try the OP's fix and edit that file, Xsane overwrites it the
next time it starts. So after three years nothing has happened, it is still not
possible to save an uncompressed tif file! I find this rather outrageous!

Also, Robert Ancell claims that Simple-scan will save uncompressed, but
it certainly does not. Simple-scan 3.4.3.

Does all this mean that there is no way to scan uncompressed with a HP
scanner? If so, what kind of scanner do I need to get uncompressed
scans?

[Bug 914461] Re: common-session should not create a local user when using sssd

2013-05-04 Thread Petter Reinholdtsen
This bug seem to be misclassified. If I understand it correctly, it is
a request for not using libpam-sss and libpam-mklocaluser together if
you want to use libpam-mkhome instead of libpam-mklocaluser. And while
that seem correct enough - if you do not want to use libpam-mkhome,
please do so. But it is hardly a bug in libpam-mklocaluser that it do
not fit a use case it isn't intended for.

Seems Marius is right. I'm Norwegian too and this occurs on Synaptic
0.75.9ubuntu1 in Linux Mint 13 as well. Using sudo LANG=en_EN.utf8
synaptic works but is not very practical since the Package Manager entry
in MintMenu is not editable, and also MintUpdate can not install updates
because of this.

[Bug 819116] Re: unity-panel-service crashed with SIGSEGV in g_variant_type_info_unref()

2012-01-13 Thread Petter Flensburg
Hi!

Charles, of course I update my system, still running Oneiric though.

I think that if no one else is still having these problems I think we
should assume that it's fixed somehow, and close the bug. This bug was
nerv vrecki'n when it occured but it does not happen any longer.

So if anyone has something against this, shout out loud ;)

[Bug 819116] Re: unity-panel-service crashed with SIGSEGV in g_variant_type_info_unref()

2011-12-01 Thread Petter Flensburg
Hi Charles. I have tried to reproduce it to create this bug to create
this new backtrace, however it doesn't happen...

Before it would occur by itself like once every couple of days, but it
does not happen anymore. I have no idea why.
