[Bug 1682647] Re: vmtoolsd user process is not started for KDE session in kubuntu 17.04

2017-05-23 Thread Trip F
VMWare Workstation 12.5.6 Pro running a Kubuntu 17.04 vm. Bug confirmed.

Temporary workaround is to to add the following line to crontab:
@reboot /usr/bin/vmware-user-suid-wrapper

^ That will start the required process so auto-resolution, copy/paste &
drag/drop will work.

[Bug 165117] Re: Broken Image/Road Overlays on Google Earth

2009-01-07 Thread Trip Ericson
Hello:

I do not run Compiz Fusion because I am a KDE 4 user. I don't use KDE
4's integrated compositing because I find that my system feels slower
when I have compositing enabled, and I don't much care for all the
excessive effects and transitions. Further, compositing liked to crash
X, and did not work with Google Earth or Sauerbraten.

I also am using Google Earth installed from Google's site, rather than
the Medibuntu package. I'm not sure if that will help you or not.

I hope that provides some kind of help to you.

[Bug 310020] Re: firefox - pointer blinking when over a link

2008-12-23 Thread Trip Ericson
I'd like to join in the chorus of people who also has this complaint. I
can't use dropdown menus on websites because it flickers back and forth
between the hand and the pointer. However unlike folks here, I'm using
the latest Swiftfox build. Given that I have not updated Swiftfox in
several weeks but the issue started last week, it's safe to suggest it's
not an issue with Swiftfox.

[Bug 303011] Re: 2.5.1 driver release is outrageously slow

2008-12-07 Thread Trip Ericson
That corrected it. My performance is now about 18 fps, still lower than
I used to get, but it's now playable.

Google Earth now no longer complains, but I accidentally left an image
overlay on it while in software mode and now it freezes a few seconds
after the program starts, as indicated in my bug report here when image
overlays are used.

2008-12-06 Thread Trip Ericson
I don't use compositing on the desktop but I'm having the same lousy
performance after upgrading to the Jaunty alpha. My system has Intel's
965 graphics.

I attempted to run Sauerbraten which normally gets about 45 fps and got
less than 1 fps. I also attempted to run Google Earth which threw an
error about running OpenGL in software but, while slow as all hell, at
least didn't lock up when I attempted to open my image overlays and
shows all the letters and numbers it's supposed to. (See the other bug
report I have active)

Do you want copies from my computer of the information that Kevin Lange
gave you?

Booted up-to-date Intrepid with 2.6.27-3.4 successfull 3 times without any

[Bug 165117] Re: Broken Image/Road Overlays on Google Earth

2008-09-04 Thread Trip Ericson
Alright, some update to Kubuntu Intrepid fixed this somewhat, but not
entirely.

Whereas the roads used to break up as the image overlays do, now the
roads are solid at all times. I have two new problems though:

1- Only certain letters/numbers appear. For example, the coordinates at
the bottom left of the screen, only 9's show up. I'll attach a picture.

2- Google Earth freezes upon attempting to utilize an image overlay. I
know this is not a problem with Google Earth because this worked (albeit
poorly) up until recently, and I haven't updated Google Earth.

[Bug 246067] Re: Kernel panic during boot after upgrading to kernel 2.6.26.3-generic

2008-07-13 Thread Trip McKay
Hi,

I had this issue, too. But after trying some options in the virtual
machine do the following to get a much higher successful boot rate (at
least it works for me):

Go into the Settings of the VM, choose the Advanced Tab in General and
check Enable VT-X/AMD-V. I am virtualizing with Windows Vista Home
Premium SP1 as Host and an AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 4800+
2.50 GHz Brisbane. After unchecking the option I will get the bad EIP
error codes again.

Hope this helps nailing down the problem.

[Bug 221273] Re: Backlight, Wifi Disabled After Suspend

2008-04-24 Thread Trip Ericson
Last night I somehow managed to get everything turned back on, though
I'm not entirely sure how. I was planning to get my roommate to burn a
7.10 CD and I was going to attempt to suspend and resume that. I had my
computer sitting on the BIOS screen so I could easily do that, and then
after 5 minutes it shut itself off. My first fear was that it
overheated, because it felt very hot. I let it sit and cool for a few
minutes, then when I turned it back on, everything worked. For whatever
reason, the powering it off and on that I'd done earlier in the evening
did not correct the problem, but just letting it shut off from the BIOS
screen corrected it.

Any tests that I should run to help determine what happened, let me
know.

[Bug 221273] [NEW] Backlight, Wifi Disabled After Suspend

2008-04-23 Thread Trip Ericson
Public bug reported:

I installed Kubuntu-KDE4 8.04 RC on my Toshiba P200-ST2061 (Santa Rosa
guts). It has one of these ridiculous Phoenix BIOSes. I installed
Guidance-Power-Manager and immediately upon loading, the system
suspended.

When it came back up, the wireless and the LCD backlight are dead. They
will not come back on no matter what I try. I tried the fix described
in another bug, of switching to console and back, that didn't help.

Something is disabled in the BIOS. I know this because there's a light
on the front of the unit that is controlled through a BIOS control, it's
a glowing blue Satellite logo. This light also is off and has
remained off.

As best I can tell, these three things are disabled in the BIOS, and I
don't know how to bring them out of the suspend mode. I'll reply if I
figure out how to get these things re-enabled; I'm going to try running
and suspending 7.10 in case that helps, after that, I have no ideas.

Once I get my backlight and wireless back, then I can help figure out
what caused it. If anyone knows a command to help with this, it would
be most appreciated.

[Bug 38313] Re: Brightness too dark after sleep

2008-04-16 Thread Trip
Hi Greg,
It's a little hard to test this one the same as before because the auto
changing of the brightness doesn't seem to be working at all anymore. It
doesn't dim down by itself when removing the power, even though I ticked the
box in Gnome power management.

I set the brightness to full using the Power Manager Brightness Applet 2.22.1,
went into Suspend, came back out and the brightness was still full.
I then did the same but set the brightness to the lowest level and it started
back up at the lowest level.
Just to make sure, I set it to half way and suspended again and it started back
up at the correct level.

Not too sure if you want to shut this bug report down or not?

[Bug 119672] Re: Gutsy Gibbon and FN keys on Sony Vaio

2008-04-16 Thread Trip
While testing the Beta version of Hardy Heron, I've just noticed
something about the FN keys. Could you guys check this and see if you
get the same results please?

I opened up a terminal and entered..
sudo showkey -u

I got the following message..
WARNING: Unicode mode is experimental -- output may be wrong
kb mode was RAW

I pressed some keys to make sure that they registered ok and the showkey
software detected them fine.
I then pressed the FN key but got no response at all, as expected.

Now comes the interesting part..

The key's F2, F3, F4, F5, F6, F7, F10 and F12 didn't register anything
either when used with the FN key but they do when not used with the FN
key.

If I press the FN key + the other F keys that aren't supposed to have
any special functions (F1, F8, F9, F11), they work the same as if the FN
key isn't even being held down.

This tells me that the FN key is actually making a difference to the
special keys and Ubuntu's detecting when it's pressed down :)

I hope I've explained this clear enough for everyone?

Here's a list of the special key's on the FS series of laptops, along

[Bug 38316] Re: Hibernate fails Sony VAIO VGN-FS215E

2008-04-16 Thread Trip
Ok tested both hibernate and suspend whilst on battery and mains but
only short term for both. No problems from what I can see so far.
Internet connection re-establishes itself to the correct network, sound
comes back on (not tested recording sound yet though) and the graphics
seem fine :)

Thought I'd better mention that I'm not using desktop effects through
Compiz Fusion yet, not too sure if that would make a difference or not??

[Bug 38316] Re: Hibernate fails Sony VAIO VGN-FS215E

2008-04-16 Thread Trip
Just tried hibernate again on Hardy Beta with latest updates and it
worked fine :D

This wasn't an exhaustive test though, I just hibernated while Firefox was open
and started the computer back up once it had completely shut down.
I'll try it again a little later for a longer period of time (maybe over
night?) and check out the suspend too.

Cheers for all your hard work guys, as always.. you rock! :)

Ok I enabled Compiz Fusion and run through all the tests again and I
also tested hibernate by hibernating with the power plugged in and
restoring it whilst on the battery.. and suspend by suspending whilst on
battery and restoring it with the power lead in.

Congratulations.. a clean slate with everything working as it should and
no problems that I can see :D

Is it all working for you other guys on your model of laptops?

[Bug 208727] [NEW] [hardy] USB keyboard numpad not enabled although LED indication

2008-03-29 Thread Trip McKay
Public bug reported:

This is a German (quertz) USB Logitech Ultra-Flat Keyboard. The status
indicator LED for active numpad is glowing on system start, but numpad
has arrow key functions which should only be the case if LED/numpad is
disabled. The Num-Button has to be pressed one time to get the numpad
working.

The keyboard is (mistakenly?) recognized as a NOVATEK USB Keyboard.

[Bug 194719] Re: 01_proc_sys_batteries.patch causes a regression making gnome-power-manager not detecting the battery properly

2008-02-26 Thread Trip Ericson
I'm also having this problem, but with KDE 3.5. The battery icon can
tell when the system has been unplugged, and seems like it updates
itself then, but otherwise sits there on the same percentage number
regardless of the actual charge in the battery. For example, it spent
hours yesterday at 5% charge despite the fully charged light on the
front of my machine being on. When I unplugged the machine to sit on my
bed with it, when the backlight dimmed, the icon updated itself.

Interestingly enough, prior to this, for a while the machine listed
itself as having two batteries for some reason, Battery #1 would be
accurate and updated, and Battery #2 would be this non-updated thing.
Even though they're the same battery.

I'd attach some files, but most of the commands seem to be Gnome-
specific, and I'd rather just run/post all of them at once. Any help I
can provide shall be provided.

Many apologies. I'm using Alpha 2, though I was using Gutsy when I

How would one file a bug with Google? I asked in their support forum

I've posted there, Ubuntu Forums, and now here and cannot seem to get
any help on this matter.

Any command outputs or other information you need can be provided.

[Bug 165117] Broken Image/Road Overlays on Google Earth

2007-11-25 Thread Trip Ericson
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: googleearth-package

Ever since I got my new computer back in July, I've been having a
problem with Google Earth's display being... incorrect. I'm filing this
here and not with Google because I think this is actually a problem in
Xorg or somewhere else and not with Google Earth, since my old computer
running the same version of Google Earth does not have this problem.

I have a Toshiba P200-ST2061 with an Intel GM965 chipset and X3100
graphics. I'm running off the Hardy repos right now, though the problem
existed under Gutsy as well.

Basically, with Windows on this machine, Google Earth is completely
smooth and the overlays function perfectly. Under Linux, the movement
itself is somewhat choppy (not a major concern of mine, but see my note
on it at the bottom) and the image and road overlays appear broken.
Here are a pair of images to demonstrate my problem:

This first one was taken on my old computer, and shows correctly. This is how
the map shows under Windows as well as under other computers I've tried.
http://data.quelorant.com/GE-correct.jpg

And this is what I see on my machine.
http://data.quelorant.com/GE-incorrect.jpg

Though those images don't show it, when zoomed out more, some roads also
take that broken appearance.

Glxgears runs fine and glxinfo reports that direct rendering is
functional, so I'm not sure why it's acting as it is. I'm going to
attach glxinfo just in case it helps.

Being that the motion is somewhat choppy, I wonder if that's also why
OpenGL-based game Sauerbraten runs in a choppy manner at higher
resolutions. I keep it at 1280x800 to run it semi-smoothly, above that
it jerks around much as Google Earth seems to.

[Bug 141623] Re: Fn Keys No Longer Control Brightness (Toshiba P200)

2007-11-25 Thread Trip Ericson
I'd like to note that somewhere along the way, the brightness broke
again, and one again cannot be controlled. However, booting off of a
live CD, I note that I am able to at least partially control it. I'm
going to wait until the first Hardy Alpha comes along with a new kernel
and see if that helps my issue. If it does, I'm happy, and if not, then
I'll attempt to provide any more details, if needed.

[Bug 156809] Games not recognizing controllers

2007-10-24 Thread Trip
Public bug reported:

Some games look for game controllers in /dev/ instead of /dev/input/.
An easy fix can be found at..
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=293852

From the thread..

sudo gedit /etc/udev/rules.d/60-symlinks.rules

Place the following at the bottom of the file..

# Create Joystick /dev/js0, /dev/js1, etc using symlink
#(links /dev/input/jsX to /dev/jsX)
KERNEL==js[0-9]*, SYMLINK+=%k

save the file and exit.

On reboot the joystick can be found by the programs looking for /dev/js0
as well as /dev/input/js0

Can't this fix be in Ubuntu straight from an install? It would save new
users a lot of head scratching :)

[Bug 141623] Fn Keys No Longer Control Brightness (Toshiba P200)

2007-09-21 Thread Trip Ericson
Public bug reported:

It seems like ever since a system update earlier this week (one that
updated a number of things, but acpi packages stuck out), my Fn keys no
longer control the brightness.

Up until that update, Fn+F6 and Fn+F7 would decrease and increase the
brightness, respectively. Now it can be controlled with the Power
Manager, but not through the Fn keys. Again, this worked correctly
until a recent update.

I have a Toshiba P200-ST2061 (Santa Rosa guts).

[Bug 108409] Re: No Sound Upon Upgrade to 7.04 (Workaround Included)

2007-04-21 Thread Trip Ericson
This is odd. I just woke up and restarted my system, and now the sound
works on bootup. If the state file is corrupt, then was it rebuilt upon
using the 'reset' command?

I guess my concern, then, it what caused it. It coincided with the
upgrade, though that doesn't necessarily mean the two are related.
Someone with less technical ability than I have would have been
completely lost and without sound.

Well I apologize if I've wasted your time, but I didn't know if there
was an actual bug involved or not. Better safe than sorry, you know.

[Bug 108409] No Sound Upon Upgrade to 7.04 (Workaround Included)

2007-04-20 Thread Trip Ericson
Public bug reported:

I upgraded my Toshiba A15-S157 to Feisty this afternoon, and had a very
good experience compared to my upgrade from 6.06 to 6.10. The only
problem I had was a lack of sound.

Any program that tried to output sound had no problem telling me it was
outputting sound. For instance, XMMS was running as though there was
sound coming out of the speakers or the jack, but neither was true. It
was playing and the visualization was running, but no sound was actually
being output.

Upon a tip from another bug report I found that was unrelated to this
specific issue, I played around with the /etc/init.d/alsa-utils command.
Nothing seemed to work until I ran this:

sudo /etc/init.d/alsa-utils reset

And all of a sudden sound blared at me in a normal fashion. Attempting
to use the restart command did not resolve the sound issue, but reset
did. I fear I may have to use this command at every bootup in order to
hear sound, though I have yet to reboot and test.

Shoot. I forgot to mention that I am using Kubuntu and not Ubuntu.
Don't know if that makes a difference.

[Bug 37736] Re: Microphone bug in Ubuntu Dapper.

2007-03-05 Thread Trip
Just though I'd better mention that I wrote a quick tutorial on how to
get around this bug on my Ubuntu-FS site a while ago.

http://ubuntufs.wordpress.com/2006/06/08/trouble-with-your-microphone/

I keep a keen eye on the sites stats this still seems to be one of the
most read articles on the whole blog. I think that it effects quite a
few different types of laptops, not just Sony VAIO's.

[Bug 72126] Re: Firefox, Swiftfox Both Crash When Popups are Called

2007-02-17 Thread Trip Ericson
Well, in the time since I filed the bug report, I have done a clean
install of 6.10, which helped a great deal.

That said, it still likes to crash sometimes, though not frequently,
when popups are called. I'd say 1 in 15 popups or dialog boxes cause
crashes now, though there appears to be no set pattern. Basically, I
cannot reproduce it on demand.

I have the Java 6 runtime installed, along with the latest Flash 9 for
Linux. Neither have to be in use for the crash to occur.

The initial bug that I filed, I tested with I believe only FlashBlock
installed and received the same crash problems. I'm inclined to believe
that the problem was related to the upgrade, since it largely
disappeared when I reinstalled Kubuntu 6.10.

I'm using the iPox theme, in case that applies.

Secondly, you are going to hate me. At this time, I have installed:

Chromatabs
CuteMenus - Crystal SVG
Deepest Sender
DOM Inspector
Download Manager Tweak
Download Status Bar
FireFTP
Flashblock
Greasemonkey
McAfee SiteAdvisor (to advise friends on sites)
Menu Editor
Mozilla XForms
MR Tech Local Install
Paste and Go 2
Server Spy
Show Picture
Stop-or-Reload Button
Stylish
Tabbrowser Preferences
User Agent Switcher
Video Downloader

If there is anything else I can help with, please let me know.

[Bug 72126] Firefox, Swiftfox Both Crash When Popups are Called

2006-11-16 Thread Trip Ericson
Public bug reported:

I upgraded a Kubuntu 6.06.1 to 6.10 a few weeks ago, and ever since,
Firefox and Swiftfox both crash frequently.

9 times out of 10, on opening any popup, be it a blocked popup, a called
one, one within the application such as downloading a file or the
Deepest Sender extension, any of those things causes the browser to
segfault.

When I run them from the command line, this is the error I get when it
segfaults:

(Gecko:8268): Gtk-CRITICAL **: gtk_widget_get_parent_window: assertion
`GTK_IS_WIDGET (widget)' failed

(Gecko:8268): Gdk-CRITICAL **: gdk_window_is_viewable: assertion `window
!= NULL' failed

(Gecko:8268): Gtk-CRITICAL **: gtk_widget_get_parent: assertion `GTK_IS_WIDGET
(widget)' failed
Segmentation fault

I'm not sure what else might be needed. Any remedies would be most
appreciated, as crashing on pages like CNN and downloading a file are
most annoying.

[Bug 69096] Upgraded to 6.10 - IPW2200 Card Fails to Connect on Boot

2006-10-29 Thread Trip Ericson
Public bug reported:

I upgraded my laptop from 6.06.1, fully patched, to 6.10 and had several
issues. I managed to resolve all of them myself, with this one
exception.

Whenever I boot the system, my eth1 interface (an IPW2200 wireless card)
is shown as up and functional, but has no IP address. I have to sudo
ifdown eth1 and then sudo ifup eth1 in order to acquire one.

I see that Bug 34505 has an issue that appears to be similar, however I
did not have this problem with Dapper. It occurred only after the
upgrade to Edgy.

[Bug 69096] Re: Upgraded to 6.10 - IPW2200 Card Fails to Connect on Boot

2006-10-29 Thread Trip Ericson
Yes, I am using Kubuntu. I don't tend to use GUI tools to do network
management. I haven't tried using dhclient though, I'll have to try
that next time I restart the system. (I can do that immediately if you
want me to)

What do you mean by 'manually connect the card'? It will connect if I
do ifdown and then ifup, but not on boot-up.

[Bug 69096] Re: Upgraded to 6.10 - IPW2200 Card Fails to Connect on Boot

2006-10-29 Thread Trip Ericson
Well, here's what happens. I'm using DHCP to get the address, but I
have the DHCP server set to assign my laptop's MAC address the same IP
(192.168.11.27) every time it connects. I use no encryption, as I live
in the middle of nowhere.

I just restarted the system, and it once again did not acquire the IP
but once logged in (and seeing Gaim fail to connect to anything), using
'sudo dhclient eth1' did acquire it, just as doing ifdown/ifup would
have.
