I see https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/schroot/+bug/769595 is
essentially asking for the same default.

[Bug 789186] [NEW] Unsupported feature in swf file

2011-05-27 Thread Wookey
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: lightspark

I tiried to connect to an online seminar:
http://www.cicstart.org/event/webinar_login
unfortunately to get the actual error requires loggin on with my credentials,
which makes this hard to reproduce. You can sign up for an account easily
enough, then try?

The error lightspoark shows is:
SWF file: http://cic.adobeconnect.com/common/meetingAS3/launcher/launcher.swf
Could not resolve property in constructProp

The service seems to be adobe connect, and their troubleshooting page is here:
http://cic.adobeconnect.com/common/help/en/support/meeting_test.htm

That fails at 'connection test', but gives no details. I've reported a
bug to them and we'll see if we get any more useful info.

I tried upgrading from default natty to 'current PPA' but that didn;t
make any difference to the error.

ProblemType: Bug
DistroRelease: Ubuntu 11.04

[Bug 784112] Re: Doesn't allow upgrade to natty due to 'ubuntu-minimal missing' when it is present

2011-05-23 Thread Wookey
OK, the problem here is that my main archive is the internal arm one:
deb http://arm-archive-ubuntu.cambridge.arm.com/ubuntu/ maverick main
restricted universe
deb-src http://arm-archive-ubuntu.cambridge.arm.com/ubuntu/ maverick main
restricted universe

So once the installer has sanitized your repo set to remove 3rd-party
ones there is nothing left so it goes 'help, it's all broken!'.

It would be nice if it gave a more helpful error message at least like
'you have no main repositories left after I sanitised things' rather
than trying to tell you a package you _do_ have is not present. Even
better would be to be a bit more liberal/smart and say 'is this a mirror
of the ubuntu archive?'

[Bug 771567] [NEW] cross-compiling wrapper support for pkg-config

2011-04-26 Thread Wookey
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: pkg-config

cross-building tools and build systems will use triplet-pkg-config if
it is present to ensure the correct directories are looked in for
library information. This is necessary for dpkg-buildpackage to be able
to cross-build many packages, and for any tool to correctly deal with a
package that uses pkg-config for both build and host system libraries.

This patch simply adds a generic wrapper script which can be linked-to
with links of the appropriate names. These links are expected to be
installed by cross-toolchain packages.

[Bug 731079] Re: xdeb fails if dpkg-cross has nothing to do

2011-04-18 Thread Wookey
No that scratch directory was deliberately blanked. Not sure what was going on
there. I've reproduced the problem now. Here is a rather simpler test-case:
After downloading libidn11 packages
wget -N
http://ports.ubuntu.com/ubuntu-ports/pool/universe/libi/libidn/idn_1.18-1build1_armel.deb
wget -N
http://ports.ubuntu.com/ubuntu-ports/pool/main/libi/libidn/libidn11-dev_1.18-1build1_armel.deb
wget -N
http://ports.ubuntu.com/ubuntu-ports/pool/main/libi/libidn/libidn11_1.18-1build1_armel.deb
wget -N
http://ports.ubuntu.com/ubuntu-ports/pool/universe/libi/libidn/libidn11-java_1.18-1build1_all.deb

dpkg-cross -a armel -b -X install-info -X dpkg -X pkg-config
libidn11-dev_1.18-1build1_armel.deb libidn11_1.18-1build1_armel.deb
libidn11-java_1.18-1build1_all.deb
is run and fails with dpkg-cross: package libidn11-java doesn't provide any
useful files. Skipping.

So the real problem here is that xdeb thought libidn11-java was a
crossable package, downloaded it and tried to cross it. The question is
should we fix this by telling xdeb that it's not meaningfully crossable,
or by having it automatically skip over such failures and press on in
the hope that it won't matter?

On the one hand the way xdeb works it expects to be able to identify
crossable packages from it's heuristics+black/whitelists - doing this
lets it remove them from the cross-dependency tree in the -cross
packages. On the other hand otherwise-identified, but actually cross-
null packages are harmless. If we decided that such packages were not an
error, then we'd need to turn on the '--convert-anyway' flag so that the
empty packages were there to satisfy the dependencies on them which have
not been pruned. (this is how xapt works - just do the whole damn lot).
Apart from polluting the package name space with a lot of -cross
packages it doesn't do much harm, but is best discouraged outside a
chroot becuase it'll make a mess eventually.

[Bug 750585] Re: [FFe] support for making linux-libc-dev coinstallable under multiarch

2011-04-07 Thread Wookey
And here is a patch for newlib to make it build properly.

Tested on i386 as that is the only architecture newlib actually builds the
library package for.

I have not tested that this still works correctly if the package is
autoreconfed. I tried but it resolutely refuses to do anything with
autoconf 2.67 - demanding 2.64 instead.

[Bug 750585] Re: [FFe] support for making linux-libc-dev coinstallable under multiarch

2011-04-06 Thread Wookey
Here is a patch to make klibc build with new linux-libc-dev
(multiarched) package

klibc uses -nostdinc before specifying include paths, thus stopping the
normal compiler system paths being searched. This is (probably) correct
behaviour for a c-library, although it may be possible to build it
correctly without using -nostdinc in which case this fix would not be
necessary.

Because the normal paths are not being searched but klibc still needs
the kernel headers, the Debian packaging makes symlinks to
/usr/include/linux and /usr/include/asm-generic. This patch adds
/usr/include/$(DEB_HOST_MULTIARCH)/asm to the set of links maintained.
It works correctly if switching architectures. I haven't tested cross-
building yet.

[Bug 742617] [NEW] libfreetype6-dev uses multiarch paths but is not marked with Multi-Arch field

2011-03-25 Thread Wookey
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: libfreetype6-dev

this package has library and pkgconfig files in /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu,
making it 'multiarchified'. The control file however does not contain a
Multi-Arch: same field.

 This means that it cannot be succesfully crossed by dpkg-cross (v

how to treat the package.

[Bug 741433] [NEW] Adding tests and :native to libdpkg-perl architecture qualifier parsing

ensure that it is working OK.

[Bug 741436] [NEW] apport won't install in a natty chroot on a Debian squeeze machine, due to missing upstart

2011-03-23 Thread Wookey
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: apport

If you make a natty chroot with debootstrap on a Debian squeeze machine
then try to install apport you get:

Setting up apport (1.20-0ubuntu1) ...
start: Unable to connect to Upstart: Failed to connect to socket
/com/ubuntu/upstart: Connection refused
invoke-rc.d: initscript apport, action start failed.
dpkg: error processing apport (--configure):

Processing triggers for python-support ...
No apport report written because MaxReports is reached already
  Errors were
encountered while processing:  apport
E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1)

I believe apport should still install if upstart is not running, as it
(at least apport-cli) will actually work. I suspect it is normally only
tested in chroots on ubuntu machines, so this problem has not been
noticed.

Re: [Bug 739151] [NEW] dpkg-cross does not do sensible things with multi-arch: same packages

2011-03-21 Thread Wookey
+++ Steve Langasek [2011-03-21 05:06 -]:
 Public bug reported:

 Binary package hint: dpkg-cross

 Running dpkg-cross against the Multi-Arch: same version of libc6
 currently in natty does not produce sensible output. Instead it
 generates a .deb that contains only a large number of iconv .so modules
 under /usr/x86_64-linux-gnu/include, e.g.:

  ./usr/x86_64-linux-gnu/include/gconv/libCNS.so

 I have no idea why it's installing to include. The source location was
 ./usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/gconv/.

You're quite right - it does indeed do that.

 It might seem that it's not a big deal for dpkg-cross to not handle
 multiarch packages since multiarch packages can just be installed
 directly; but since we can't use foreign-architecture build dependencies
 on the buildds yet, cross-toolchain packages in the archive (such as
 armel-cross-toolchain-base) need to build using gcc-4.5-source, eglibc-
 source, etc. and run dpkg-cross afterwards to output their binary
 packages.

fx: looks at armel-cross-toolchain-base code

Hmm. I see.

In general the right thing for dpkg-cross to do with multiarch
packages is nothing, at least in terms of moving files about. What you
want here is the ability to leave the files just where they are but
still have the 'make a package for a different arch' functionality?

Or do you in fact want the functionality of moving files into the
'old' locations even if they start in the multiarch ones (because
something about the build process needs it)? That seems very horrid

 I've checked with dpkg-cross 2.6.2 from Debian unstable; the same
 problem is present there.

The multiarch behaviour of what's in cvs (2.6.3) is different from 2.6.2. It
essentially tries to do nothing.

$ dpkg-cross -b -a amd64 libc6_2.13-0ubuntu8_amd64.deb
dpkg-cross: Skipping the 'libc6_2.13-0ubuntu8_amd64.deb' Multi-Arch package.

So that's better than the previous messing it up, and is a prefectly
reasonable way of fixing this bug. (i.e now it does something
sensible). But that doesn't help armel-cross-toolchain-base.

 So the armel cross-compiler in the archive isn't buildable
 until this is resolved.

I think we can all agree that the _correct_ fix for this is to allow
cross-arch dependencies and have the cross-toolchains built in a less-gross
way, but as we're not going to be there for a bit it seems like
allowing dpkg-cross --convert-anyway to make
libc6_2.13-0ubuntu8_amd64.deb into
libc6-amd64-cross_2.13-0ubuntu8_all.deb
might be a reasonable things to do.

--convert-anyway is currently used for 'convert when the package would
otherwise be null'. Extending it to cover 'convert even when it
multiarch and normally we'd do nothing' doesn't seem unreasonable. Can
anyone think of a reason why a different option (--force-cross?) should
be used?

I tried to reproduce this with the just-merged xdeb-graph branch and get

entirely failing to install any host-arch packages, so falls over as

[Bug 705067] [NEW] cups hangs on package upgrade

2011-01-19 Thread Wookey
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: cups

On upgrading cups hangs at:
Unpacking replacement cups-ppdc ...
Preparing to replace cups 1.4.4-6ubuntu2.2 (using
.../cups_1.4.4-6ubuntu2.3_amd64.deb) ...

the stuck process is 'stop cups', which appears happy to wait forever
(left it half an hour or so). The previous update did the same thing.

sudo kill -9 offending process allows the upgrades to continue until we get
to:
Installing new version of config file /etc/init/cups.conf ...
where it gets stuck again.

At this point we have this process tree:
  `- aptitude
   `- /usr/bin/dpkg --status-fd 38 --configure linux-headers-2.6.35-24
libc-dev-bin linux-libc-dev libc6-dev libc6-i386 li
   `- /usr/bin/perl -w /usr/share/debconf/frontend
/var/lib/dpkg/info/cups.postinst configure 1.4.4-6ubuntu2.2
   `- /bin/sh /var/lib/dpkg/info/cups.postinst configure
1.4.4-6ubuntu2.2
   `- start cups

systracing this process hows:
restart_syscall(... resuming interrupted call ...

sudo kill kills the 'start' and lets the rest of the upgrades complete.

manually running start cups also hangs

$ps aux | grep cups
root  1083  0.0  0.0  72128  3832 ?Ss   15:28   0:00
/usr/sbin/cupsd -C /etc/cups/cupsd.conf

hope that's useful.

[Bug 681505] Re: xapt config and mirrors various related breakages

2010-12-01 Thread Wookey
Thanx for this report.
That is indeed all wrong :-)

1) -x should be -e (exists, not executable)
2) is broken - variable name was wrong, config auto not working. I haven't
managed to fix this bit yet
3) should be predicated on --mirror not --suite (if you set a mirror then use
that instead of host config, otherwise use host config)
4) yes the [arch=armel] thing is needed with newer apt.

I need to get to the bottom of the config parse issue in order to upload
a fixed version

[Bug 676233] [NEW] xserver jammed up (only mouse working)

Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

I was doing very typical work (for a minute or so after 50mins away)
when the machine stopped responding. The mouse moved but keyboard LEDs
dead and no screen action. Not even ctrl-alt-F1 or -backspace did
anything.

htop told me that the Xserver was running at about 70%, and
/var/log/Xorg.0.log said: [mi] EQ overflowing. The server is probably
stuck in an infinite loop. which seems about right.

I upgraded to Maverick and noveau instead of Karmic and nvidia a couple

[Bug 673977] [NEW] xscreensaver crashed (display and keyboard dead) on nouveau assertion

2010-11-11 Thread Wookey
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-nouveau

I got back to my machine in the morning to find that the display showed a
slightly corrupted opengl screensaver image with the following text at the top
of the screen:
gltext:../../nouveau/nouveau_pushbuf.c:273: nouveau_pushbuf_flush: Assertion
`!nouveau_pushbuf_space(chan,min)' failed.
xscreensaver: 19:48:14: 0: child pid 5290 (gltext) terminated with signal 6.

The keyboard is dead in a 'scroll lock/numlock don't change the LEDs' sort of
way.
I can still ssh into the machine and X is still running (using 66% CPU) along
with all my other apps and processes.
xscreensaver master process is still running too. It does not respond to
DISPLAY=:0 xscreensaver-command -deactivate
(or -version)
stracing the command shows:(snipping a load of startup file checking):
...
socket(PF_FILE, SOCK_STREAM|SOCK_CLOEXEC, 0) = 3
connect(3, {sa_family=AF_FILE, path=@/tmp/.X11-unix/X0}, 20) = 0
getpeername(3, {sa_family=AF_FILE, path=@/tmp/.X11-unix/X0}, [20]) = 0
uname({sys=Linux, node=e102475-lin, ...}) = 0
access(/home/wookey/.Xauthority, R_OK) = 0
open(/home/wookey/.Xauthority, O_RDONLY) = 4
fstat(4, {st_mode=S_IFREG|0600, st_size=0, ...}) = 0
mmap(NULL, 4096, PROT_READ|PROT_WRITE, MAP_PRIVATE|MAP_ANONYMOUS, -1, 0) =

fcntl(3, F_SETFL, O_RDWR|O_NONBLOCK)= 0

read(3, 0x1440590, 8)   = -1 EAGAIN (Resource temporarily
unavailable)
poll([{fd=3, events=POLLIN}], 1, -1 unfinished ...

Which seems to shwo that the X socket simply isn't responding, so the
server is dead to useful activity.

hupping the X process doesn't help. restarting gdm (and thus X) makes
the display fill with random stuff (lots of little tiles of X stuff) but
the keyboard is still dead. Only rebooting the machine gets you back to
a useful state.

This appears to be the same bug as

[Bug 645147] Re: pdebuild-cross fails to build things

2010-10-01 Thread Wookey
OK. here is an updated patch following above discussion which tests OK
with current multistrap.

It now uses a config file /etc/xapt/xapt.conf to set mirror and default
components - this is the only thing that should change between
Debian/Ubuntu. Avoids whole lsb-release issue and the switch that
neither upstream nor Steve liked.

The apt trusted keyring config options are needed to make xapt install
anything, otherwise it just insists nothing can be authenticated. This
is exactly the same issue as with multistrap (because xapt is
downloading cross-packages into /var/lib/xapt, not the main chroot). So
now we have working authentication with new-apt - woo.

Also included is an upstream fix to the translation file stuff so that
translations should actually work - they were bust in previous release.

[Bug 646901] Re: multistrap needs to be updated for new apt and cross-tools in main

2010-10-01 Thread Wookey
The re-install issue is that we can't run pre-insts when doing the
initial unpacking to make a system with multistrap (because multistrap
is designed to work for cross rootfs creation). We have to use dpkg -X
because dpkg --unpack doesn't have a 'don't run preinsts' option.

The only useful thing most preinsts do is run dpkg-diverts, so the re-
install option exists to allow pre-insts to be run later once there is
enough system to run them on and we are running on the right
architecture. In practice this seems to work well. For cross-chroots -
until we are happy that we can leave binutils-multiarch out, I think the
reinstall option should stay.

Still, as we are trying to get rid of it maybe it doesn't matter that
much - but it'll be confusing if the package is present but in fact its
diverts aren't. I guess I can run a set of builds now and find out how
much it really breaks

[Bug 646901] Re: multistrap needs to be updated for new apt and cross-tools in main

2010-09-30 Thread Wookey
The binutils-multiarch re-install line is there because it is the fairly crufty
way we deal with diversions.
Nothing guarantees correct ordering (pre-depends ignored) so diverts may happen
before the thing they direct are present. Simplest fix is to re-install any
package doing diversions at the end. In a base cross-chroot that's just
binutils-multiarch.
Declarative diverts would let us deal with this without explicit config.

The attached patch is pretty-much the same as yours except that it also
ensures --force-yes is correctly used for the re-install option if
noauth is set.

Re: [Bug 645147] Re: pdebuild-cross fails to build things

2010-09-29 Thread Wookey

+++ Steve Langasek [2010-09-29 18:03 -]:
 Sorry, last comments - saving the best for last... :)

   * xapt: Use /etc/lsb-release to identify Debian/Ubuntu and use correct
 default
  URL and suites, but avoid 9MB lsb-release+python dependency

 However, lsb_release is the defined interface for this - parsing the
 file may give you random otherness in the future.

agreed

 And lsb-release is a
 part of the minimal Ubuntu system.

Do you mean the file or the package? The file is part of base-files
and is present in any Ubuntu chroot, the package lsb-release is only there
if something installs it.

 Could you instead check for the
 existence of lsb-release at runtime, and fall back to assuming Debian if
 it's not present?

We could, but my understanding was that the file was due to start
existing in Debian soonish, so that seems even less reliable. If I'm
wrong about that then it would be plausible.

In fact we've decided that a much better way to do this is provide a
simple config file for the things that change between distros, and
that file can change with distro. So now the program itself doesn't
have to guess anything about distro - just read its file.

I could just implement that.

   * xapt: use --force-yes so unauthenticated repositories work

 unauthenticated remote repositories are a bug, that should not be worked
 around by disabling authentication as this opens a trivial MITM attack
 against the main repos that *do* provide gpg authentication. This needs
 to be an option to xapt, not a hard-coded setting, and needs to be OFF
 by default (i.e., authentication enabled).

I don't really agree that MITM attacks on disposable chroots matter
much, and certainly not that unauthenticated remote repos are a bug.
They are quite common, especially in embedded and cross-tool work
(that's where marcin's tools started a few weeks ago for example) and
it's useful if they work.

xapt is only doing this because the whole new authentication
infrastructure in 0.8 doesn't seem to work right (or at least we are
not using it right in multistrap). xapt already used --force-yes in
the version that's already in the repo (under some circs) so refusing
to upload it on those grounds is not realy convincing.

All that said I do agree that this is hackery and would love to have
it all working right, but I did quite a bit of fiddling and failed to
work out what was actually necessary for this to work, and in the
meantime it seemed a lot better to have a working solution of some
sort than to disappear further down that rathole. At least until I got
some clarification from the apt team.

A related issue is that no-auth is an apt-wide setting and should
arguably be a per-repo thing so that when you have one unauthed repo
with a few extra packages in it you don't have ignore auth on _all_
packages. It's very all-or-nothing currently.

   * xapt: Fix incorrect skipping of source URLs that don't end in .list

 I don't understand the point of this change - the only effective
 difference appears to be whether we print out the 'skipping' message for
 backup files, we're still ignoring all files which don't end in '.list',
 and that appears to be correct?

It used to use backup files if they were present, which confused me
for some time (I had fixed a URL typo but it kept using the old URL
until this fix (and of course my filer was hiding the 'file~' to add
to the confusion)).

 Finally:

  $progname = basename($0);
  $ourversion = scripts_version();
  $dir = /var/lib/xapt/;
 -# $mirror = http://ftp.uk.debian.org/debian/;;
 -$mirror = http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/;;
 +given($distribution) {
 +   when (/^Debian/) {
 +   $mirror = http://ftp.uk.debian.org/debian/;;
 +   $defaultsuites = main contrib non-free;
 +   }
 +when (/^Ubuntu/) {
 +   $mirror = http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/;;
 +   $defaultsuites = main universe multiverse;
 +   }
 +when (undef) {
 +   $mirror = http://ftp.uk.debian.org/debian/;;
 +   $defaultsuites = main contrib non-free;
 +   }
 +}

 should this use cdn.debian.net maybe, which is geo-aware?

Seems a good idea.

 And the
 default suties list duplicates 'main' here and below; and $distribution
 should never be undefined because we already fall back to Debian. So
 maybe this is better written like so?:

 -# $mirror = http://ftp.uk.debian.org/debian/;;
 -$mirror = http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/;;
 +given($distribution) {
 +   when (/^Debian/) {
 +   $mirror = http://cdn.debian.net/debian/;;
 +   $defaultsuites = contrib non-free;
 +   }
 +when (/^Ubuntu/) {
 +   $mirror = http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/;;
 +   $defaultsuites = universe multiverse;
 +   }
 +}

Fair comment again - made moot by the idea of just using a config file.

Both those files should be removed. Now that it is clear xapt actually
works, apt-cross is being dropped. Having those hooks around but
apt-cross unusued wasted a lot of time installing apt-cross plus about
15 perls packages on every build.

This is inline with upstream, we're just slightly ahread of the Debian
mainline package at the moment - it's all being merged.

[Bug 646795] Re: lsb_release requires 9MB of Python, replace with C/Shell script

2010-09-24 Thread Wookey
I came up on it in the context of making build chroots. They don't need
python installed even on Ubuntu, and nothing causes it to be there until
you install lsb-release. And as it has to be unpacked for every build
it's good to keep the size/bloat down.

I assume that python is still listed in dependencies in Ubuntu so it
will be brought in for packages that need it?

You are right that this is much worse problem on Debian. But for tools
that need to work on Debian and Ubuntu (I came across this working on
xapt) they need a way to decide which repository layout details to use.
lsb-release seems a nice clean way but it's not acceptable on the Debian
side if it brings in python. This is actually quite a general problem
which affects various tools. A clean and low-overhead method of choosing
behaviour would be good.

Another approach is to move anything that changes out into config files
so each distro is statically configured, but it seemed nice to make the
tools just DTRT so even if run in the wrong place they would work.

[Bug 646901] [NEW] multistrap needs to be updated for new apt and cross-tools in main

2010-09-24 Thread Wookey
Public bug reported:

Attached is a patch that updates the default configs to use the cross-
tools in Ubuntu main, or Marcin's new PPA.

It also has a bit of --force-yes hackery to deal with the fact that new
apt is much pickier about authentication than pre 0.8 apt was.

This upload matches, and is tested with, emdebian-crush (pdebuild-cross,
xapt) fixes in https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/emdebian-

Both are needed for a fully-working, painless pdebuild-cross experience.

[Bug 646499] Re: apt authentication failing when using config in chroot path

2010-09-24 Thread Wookey
Thinking about this, the problem is presumably that the pointed-to apt
config does not have any keys available. This makes me wonder how this
worked with older versions of apt. Perhaps they fell back to the keys in
the base config at /etc/apt? Maybe it was effectively a bug in old apt
that it didn't require any necessary keys to be copied into the new
config.

So, to go back to first principles: If we are trying to install a set of
packages into an empty chroot, what does apt need in the pointed-to
config in order to be satisfied about authentication? Does any tool
doing this need to pre-download the necessary archive keyrings (or
otherwise get the necessary keys) and then run apt-key add using the
pointed-at apt config?

If so why was this not previously necessary?

Is there are simpler workaround in the case where the keys are already
present in the main-system apt installation? Perhaps they could just be
pointed-at with a config option or copied into the new chroot?

Advice most welcome, as all this is currently worked around with a lot
of allowunauthenticaed and --force-yes in the tools, which isn't very
satisfying.

[Bug 646499] Re: apt authentication failing when using config in chroot path

2010-09-23 Thread Wookey
A possibly related problem is that if one uses the package/suite syntax
that gives an error saying that the suite cannot be found:

sudo apt-get  -y -o Apt::Get::AllowUnauthenticated=true -o
Apt::Architecture=amd64 -o Apt::Get::Download-Only=true -o
Apt::Install-Recommends=false -o Dir=/var/lib/pdebuild-cross/build/ -o
Dir::Etc=/var/lib/pdebuild-cross/build/etc/apt/ -o
Dir::State=/var/lib/pdebuild-cross/build/var/lib/apt/ -o
Dir::State::Status=/var/lib/pdebuild-cross/build/var/lib/dpkg/status -o
Dir::Cache=/var/lib/pdebuild-cross/build/var/cache/apt/ install
aptitude/maverick
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree... Done
E: Release 'maverick' for 'aptitude' was not found

the package/suite systax works fine outside the 'pointing apt at a
chroot' context.

[Bug 645147] [NEW] pdebuild-cross fails to build things

2010-09-22 Thread Wookey
Public bug reported:

Various minor but fatal bugs were found using pdebuild-cross to actually
build packages:

1) It didn't fall back to debian/control when debian/xcontrol was not present
(it almost never is) (this fix somehow escpaed previous release)
2) It was not respecting arch qualifiers on dependencies so would try to
install packages only available for kfreebsd, for example
3) When collecting the list of available apt sources it used any files in
/etc/sources.list.d/ even backups and files not ending in .list this tended to
break things
4) It would default to 'main contrib non-free' instead of 'main universe',
which is wrong on ubuntu
5) It wouldn't install any packages if any unauthenticated repos were present.
6) Build dependencies from build-depends-indep were not installed. I'm not sure
how much this matters, but it doesn't do any harm to include those.

All these are fixed in the attached patch. It now uses lsb-release to
correctly default to ubuntu or debian system behaviour.

[Bug 619783] Re: procps will not install in multistrap unless upstart is running on the host system

2010-09-01 Thread Wookey
This problem has been worked-around/fixed in multistrap by dealing with
the general case of installing services into chroots. It now contains a
chroot.sh script which can be run when creating a chroot. This does the
same thing that debootstrap does, and replaces initctl and start-stop-
daemon with fakes which do nothing but print an 'I have been nobbled'
message.

It would be better to do this via policyrc.d as _all_ services should
use that, and any that don't need fixing immediately.

Whilst this fixes the simple case of chroot creation, it does not fix
the problem of installing services into an image which is to be a real
image (cross or otherwise), but you still don't want those services
starting things or binding to things on the build system (or changing
your sysctl settings in the case of procps) during image-creation. But
you _do_ want those things to run properly on first-boot. How best to
manage this warrants further discussion, but maybe this isn't the place.

[Bug 625042] Re: Apt is ignoring the Apt::Get::AllowUnauthenticated option

2010-08-31 Thread Wookey
This means that it is impossible to install packages from
unauthenticated archives.

This prevent pdebuild-cross from working, because it makes a minimal
build environment from plain maverick plus toolchains from Marcin's
repository at http://people.canonical.com/~hrw/ubuntu-maverick-armel-
cross-compilers/ and those packages are not signed

At some point during the release everything needed will come from
maverick directly and this will cease to be a direct issue, but it's
definately a serious bug that should be fixed

[Bug 627122] Re: pkg-create-dbgsym parsing of debian/control doesn't match dpkg's

[Bug 625059] [NEW] multistrap incorrectly identifies some repositories as 'flat URLs'

2010-08-26 Thread Wookey
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: multistrap

The regexp for spotting flat URLs was not quite specific enough and in
the present of architecture qualifiers could mis-identify a source like
[arch=armel] http://ports.ubuntu.com/ as 'flat'.

At the same time upstream has provided a much cleaner 'flat URL' patch
than the one in 2.1.6ubuntu1 so that has been included too.

There was also an incorrectly commented-out source line in
/usr/share/multistrap/ubuntu/armel.conf

[Bug 624268] [NEW] Freeze exception for emdebian-crush/pdebuld-cross

2010-08-25 Thread Wookey
Public bug reported:

Pdebuild-cross (and xapt) have proved useful for cross-building single
packages from source in Ubuntu. An upload has been agreed with the
release manager.

Pdebuild-cross makes it very easy to generate a cross-building chroot with the
relevant tools in (using multistrap or debootstrap), and then to do cross
builds of packages you have source for in the same way as native pbuilder
builds.
This environment provides a consistent chroot so that builds do not install a
lot of packages on the host system, especially locally-generated -cross
packages which will cause upgrade problems everntually. And you can be sure
that the build is not relying on previously linstalled packages.
xapt is very stupid and simply installs the whole tree of cross-dependencies,
many of which are null after crossing, but this method avoids a lot of
difficulties caused by trying to decide where to terminate the cross-dependency
tree into the native dependency tree. Other cross-dependency resolvers can be
used instead, as the process is actually nothing more than some pbuilder hook
scripts.

 Which Ubuntu release manager was that?

None. It was discussed last week with Jamie Bennett (linaro release

release manager of anything right now), and deemed to be something
that shouldn't do any harm. Sorry for any confusion.

 Probably /usr/share/pkgconfig should be added as well, not

I think you are right that /usr/share/pkgconfig is a 'better' place,
but dpkg-cross currently puts arch-indep pkgconfig files in
/usr/$triplet/share/pkgconfig

So I guess it depends if the file is being supplied by the native
package or a -cross package. I'm not sure which is currently the case
with xdeb. I'll check.

If you install ubuntu-keyring as well this problem still occurs.
Installing both ubuntu-keyring and gnupg is sufficient for it not to
happen (because /etc/apt/trusted.gpg is now automatically created).

[Bug 620576] [NEW] /usr/share/apt/ubuntu-archive.gpg is missing but necessary for fresh install

2010-08-19 Thread Wookey
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: apt

Apt's postinst copies /usr/share/apt/ubuntu-archive.gpg to /etc/apt/trusted.gpg
if there isn;t a file already there.
However in maverick apt 0.7.26~exp12ubuntu3 and 0.8.0~pre1ubuntu1 the file is
missing, so it only installs if you already have an /etc/apt/trusted.gpg
Perhaps this should be made non-fatal in case of future screw-ups? I.e. check
for the file before trying to copy it over.
Better to get an apt with no trusted capability than no apt at all, perhaps?

[Bug 620576] Re: /usr/share/apt/ubuntu-archive.gpg is missing but necessary for fresh install

2010-08-19 Thread Wookey
apt does not depend on gpg so should be happy to operate without keys.
Nor does it depend on ubuntu-keyring.

/etc/apt/trusted.gpg normally seems to be generated by ubutnu-keyring
postinst.

So I''m not sure what the purpose of the /usr/share/apt/ubuntu-
archive.gpg is/was. Is it now superceded?

The practical problem where this bug is an issue is chreating a minimal
rootfs or chroot where ubuntu-keyring is not installed.

[Bug 619783] [NEW] procps will not install in debootstrap or multistrap unless upstart is running on the host system

2010-08-18 Thread Wookey
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: procps

The postinst of procps starts the service using the upstart command
'start procps'. If upstart is not running it fails with start: Unable
to connect to Upstart: Failed to connect to socket /com/ubuntu/upstart:
Connection refused. Whilst it is policy that the postinst script of a
package should try to start the service the package installation should
not fail just because the service didn't start.

This is trivially fixed by appending || true to the start procps line in
procps.postinst
This solution is already present in the udev postinst script

Examples of cases when this is practical problem:
If the package is being installed in a chroot created on a Debian system (or
any other system not runnig upstart) then it fails to install, and stops other
packages that depend on it from installing.

Currently using multistrap or debootstrap to create a maverick chroot on
a Debian system falls over on this bug.

Re: [Bug 616617] [NEW] Imports binaries with the same name as the host binaries

2010-08-12 Thread Wookey
+++ Loïc Minier [2010-08-12 05:25 -]:
 Public bug reported:

 Binary package hint: xdeb

 Hi

 When running:
 xdeb -a armel --apt-source --only-explicit gstreamer0.10

 xdeb will import a bunch of .debs from ports.ubuntu.com/ubuntu-ports,
 but fails to import lib32gmp3 since this is the amd64 package name
 instead of the armel one. Some dependencies should be resolved in each
 architecture's space.

Indeed. xdeb currently only downloads the native architecture Package
file and uses that for dependency-tree construction and resolution
(when not using local package sources).

This is of course wrong as soon as there is any variance between
architectures (and there is, plenty). It needs to learn to download
and use the target architecture dependency tree (as apt-cross has done
for years, and xapt does).

I intend to re-implement the relevant apt-cross functionality in xdeb
to fix this problem, but it's not a trivial task.

[Bug 608146] Re: Multiple packages provide phpapi-20090626; package must select one

2010-07-28 Thread Wookey
phpapi-20090626 is provided by 4 packages: libapache2-mod-php5filter,
php5-cli, php5-cgi, libapache2-mod-php5

Arbitrarily choosing the first does not seem very helpful here (in a
cross-building context). I'm not sure if this dep is genuinely required
for cross-building, but it seems senisble to choose php5-cli as the most
appropriate way of running anything that needs it.

This looks like an instance of a set of cases where there is a choice of
fulfillers of a virtual dep, and 'best' answer should be selected for
cross-building. Adding a set of mappings for these choices would seem
like the right solution, probably via xdeb.cfg

OK. I created a test user with tcsh and it works OK for them, and I've

suspect there is a bug hiding in there, but it's quite obscure.

[Bug 603695] [NEW] mc crashes when running commands if shell is tcsh

2010-07-09 Thread Wookey
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: mc

On Karmic amd64 box I have my shell set to tcsh (over LDAP due to
network policy here so not easy to change).

running mc causes a long pause (9 seconds) before the panes appear on
the screen.

If I run a bash shell inside my tcsh then I get this behaviour:
if I do 'mkdir test' mc disappears and I am left back at a prompt, without test
having been created.

If I run mc from the plain tcsh then the startup delay is the same but
now commands don't cause mc to exit, but no output from them is produced
until I hit control C.

so mkdir test, jed filename, ls, dpkg -l all hang (having removed the
blue panels) until I hit ctrl C at which point I see the output, or
enter the editor or whatever - ie the command is actually run/allowed to
run at that point.

So clearly mc and tcsh don't really get on. If IT have made this your
default shell (and mc is your normal file manager) that's rather
serious.

Attached is an strace. The long pause happens in this code (lines658-659)
read(5, set echo_style=both;alias precmd..., 100) = 94
select(8, [5 7], NULL, NULL, {9, 976915}) = 1 (in [5], left {9, 789551})
read(5, wooke...@e102475-lin:~$ set echo..., 100) = 100
select(8, [5 7], NULL, NULL, {9, 789551}) = 1 (in [5], left {9, 789547})
read(5, 1;kill -STOP $$'\r\nbash: alias: p..., 100) = 100
select(8, [5 7], NULL, NULL, {9, 789547}) = 1 (in [5], left {9, 789543})
read(5, e.8201;kill -STOP $$: not found\r..., 100) = 57
select(8, [5 7], NULL, NULL, {9, 789543}) = 0 (Timeout)

Happy to do some more testing if it helps.
