It is an annoying problem indeed. The issue is that a lot of people in

I have a quick workaround to fix it. Just cut and past the lines below and
 restart your gnome apps:

 $ sudo perl -ani.bak -e 's/\xc4\x87/\xc3\xa7/g; s/\xc4\x86/\xc3\x87/g;
 print' /usr/share/X11/locale/en_US.UTF-8/Compose

 print }' /usr/lib/gtk-2.0/2.10.0/immodule-files.d/libgtk2.0-0.immodules

Same problem, except the wireless connection is never re-established
automatically. In other words, in intervals between 5 and 20 minutes, I
must reboot my AP (a Siemens Gigaset SX762 WLAN at 54Mbps) and manually
go into NM to re-scan networks so that it finds the wifi connection
again.

System: IBM Lenovo Thinkpad R61
Ubuntu 9.10 Jaunty.

By the way, in Windows 7 the connection never falls. I leave PC on day
and night, and connection is always up.

This is because Windows PCs show access denied, unable to connect for
the shared printer. I got the solution to this problem from

Re: [Bug 179042] Re: Videos tear and blink when enabling compiz [AMD Feature #7647] [EPR#257833]

2009-04-26 Thread cenora
I have 2 laptops:

One Lenovo Thinkpad R61 (with Nvidia graphics card) and a Fujitsu Siemens
Esprimo Mobile (with integrated intel graphics card).

I did a fresh Jaunty install on both machines and installed Google Earth.
The Nvidia PC runs smooth, the Intel doesn't.

Micro Müeller explains what happens in detail in the original BUG report for
this problem:

Summary: Wait for DRI2.

Full description from Müeller:

Every OpenGL-based application running under compiz (and being driven by
OpenSource Xorg-drivers or ATI's flgrx) will yield rendering glitches as
described, because the drivers in question are all still based on DRI and
not DRI2. What DRI lacks and DRI2 introduces - among other things - is
hw-accelerated indirect rendering. This affects composited window-managers
(like compiz) mostly. Currently with DRI the DRM does not care if the
desktop is composited or not and just hands any OpenGL-app, that asks for a
rendering-context to draw to, a pointer to the front-buffer. Thus the
OpenGL-app happy starts drawing to the front-buffer, ignoring the fact that
there might be a compositing manager running and it should rather render to
an off-screen area and let the compositing-manager do the work of blitting
the OpenGL-apps window-contents to the front-buffer. DRI2 is more
intelligent in that regard in fixes this.

All that is overly simplified of course, but should give an idea about what
is going on under the hood.

On nvidia (using the proprietary driver) one does not run into this issue
because nvidia does not use any form of DRI but their own infrastructure,
which happens to have hw-accelerated indirect rendering for some time now.
If one would be so bold to use the OpenSource nouveau-driver, they'd see the
same rendering glitches. But nouveau will of course also switch to DRI2.

Over time all OpenSource Xorg-video-driver will switch to DRI2 of course. It
will take time. The first driver that is pretty far in development to adapt
to DRI2, is the intel-video driver (for i915, i945 and i965 that should work
already). Second in line will probalby be the OpenSource radeon-driver (the
one without HD in the name).

Cenora

 - First the video didn't show up, but then I switched to Metacity, and then

 - Switched to fullscreen mode, and movie continued to play well
 - Rotated the desktop cube, and the rotation was still good - the video
playing face of the cube showed the movie correctly.

Chris Roddy, are you having trouble with 3D or video? I think the issues
 with 3D aren't yet fixed:

 1. Running glxgears, if I rotate the desktop cube, the window border moves
with the desktop, but the gears themselves stay in the same spot on the
 screen.
 2. Running glchess from gnome-games package, when switching to 3D-View,
there is a lot of blinking and switching back to 2D mode.

But I think that's probably a different bug. Can someone point me the
 appropriate bug report?

What happens to Intrepid (8.10) users until Jaunty is launched? Can we
upgrade to the 180 package? It is surely not listed as a restricted drivers

In Jaunty (9.04) we have dropped the nvidia-graphics-driver-177 package, as

Because of this, we are closing this bug as expired.

You are encouraged to file your -nvidia bug reports against the
 nvidia-graphics-drivers-180 package.

[Bug 339489] [NEW] [Intrepid] Blank screen on boot using Nvidia accelerated drivers

2009-03-08 Thread cenora
Public bug reported:

Before I write this, here is some history: I had nvidia proprietary
drivers installed and working perfectly on this pc. After working hard
to make Ubuntu work, and only following the standard system upgrades
offered by the system, I lost all sound. After about a month trying to
fix that, I got tired and decided to start from scratch. Here's what I
have now:

Fresh 8.10 install on Lenovo R61 with nvidia 140M graphics card. After
this, over 200 updates were available - OK installed.

Now I wanted to enable the Normal Desktop effects. I go to System -
Preferences - Appearance and select Normal from the Visual Effects
tab. System tells me to install the Nvidia drivers, which I do. Reboot.
Blank screen after Ubuntu bar loads.

To fix this, I use the xfix (try to fix X server) command from the
Recovery mode option in Grub. Ok, back to Gnome.

Now, going back to the Visual Effects and selecting Normal gives me
error: Desktop effects could not be enabled. Frustration (I cannot
resproduce the automatic driver installation from there any longer).

Last chance: I go into System - Administration - Hardware drivers.
Great! I see 2 options for Nvidia:

Nvidia accelerated graphics driver (version 173)
Nvidia accelerated graphics driver (version 177) [Recommended]

I select 177. It shows small progress bar, completes to 100%. Reboot:
BLANK SCREEN after ubuntu bar finishes.

Again, xfix.

I try 173. Same behavior, blank screen. Frustration.

[Bug 307855] Re: screen resolution monitor doesn't refresh when dual monitor is plugged

2009-02-26 Thread cenora
Hi Bryce,

Thanks for pointing that out. So I have 2 options:

1. Stay with the Nvidia drivers and only use its settings tool to control dual
monitors;
2. Uninstall Nvidia drivers and then capplet will find the external displays;

In case of 1, shouldn't Ubuntu disable the standard screen resolution
settings AND substitute it with Nvidia's?

Can this bug be forwarded to Nvidia developers, so they support xandr
1.2?

[Bug 307855] [NEW] screen resolution monitor doesn't refresh when dual monitor is plugged

2008-12-14 Thread cenora
Public bug reported:

I am very happy to see improvements in the dual monitor settings in
ubuntu.

I have a laptop and an external full HD monitor, Ubuntu 8.10 which I am
able to make function after spending some time configuring the displays
(and rebooting). I am only able to make it work using Nvidia X Server
settings.

The problem is that when I open Preferences - Screen Resolution, the external
display doesn't show.
I do press the Detect Displays button in the Monitor Resolution Settings
window, but NOTHING HAPPENS.

On the other hand, Nvidia X Server settings does refresh and shows both
screens.

[Bug 298179] Re: Installing Sagetv (without activation key) breaks ubuntu boot-up

2008-11-25 Thread cenora
Sorry, but the fix did not work. Here's what happens:

Once we exit the SageTV code activation question using CRTL+ALT+F5, I am able
to log into my home directory.
However, when running the sudo apt-get remove sagetv-server command, Ubuntu
informs that:

E: Could not get lock /varlib/dpkg/lock - open (11 Resource temporarily
unavailable)
E: Unable to lock the administration directory (/var/lib/dpkg/), is another
process using it?

So I kill the dpkg process, then try again:

dpkg was interrupted, you must manually run 'dpkg --configure -a' to
correct the problem.

Fine, I do just that, but that commands get's me right BACK to the
activation question from sagetv.

I AM COMPLETELY LOCKED OUT OF UBUNTU, for just installing a poor
program.

[Bug 298179] [NEW] Installing Sagetv (without activation key) breaks ubuntu boot-up

2008-11-14 Thread cenora
Public bug reported:

I downloaded the 15 day trial DEB installer from SageTV website.

During the package installation, Sage asks for an activation key. I have none,

Program refused to continue to install (without activation key), so I quit the
installer window.

During the next boot, Ubuntu drops to the text message and displays:

Starting SageTV server: sagetvChanging to SageTV directory /opt/sagetv/server
Please enter your activation key...

Tried to CTRL-everything to at least get back to Ubuntu X server to
uninstall the program, but nothing continues the boot process.

I do realize that SageTV messed up.
The problem is that NO PROGRAM should break Ubuntu from starting up.

Finally, to fix the problem, the user must:

[Bug 250891] Re: X crashes on logout - takes long to come up on boot

2008-11-08 Thread cenora
Hi, I had a similar problem on a fresh 8.10 install.

PC is a Lenovo laptop (R61).

I have installed the restricted drivers for the NVidia graphics card (version
177).
When I select logout, the screen goes black for 4 minutes, finally, the X
downgrades to a lower resolution and displays this message:

Ubuntu is running in low graphics mode. Your screen, graphics card, and
input device setting could not be detected correctly. You will need to
configure these yourself.

Then, I selected to view (archive) the proglem. It saved it to
/var/log/failsafeX-backup-081108114801.tar (attached).
After other warnings, I was brought back to the desktop (low resolution, with
screen broken in half and got this message:

You do not appear to be using the NVIDIA X driver. Edit your X
configuration file (just run 'nvidia-xconfig' as root) and restart...

I did just that, but the problem remains.

Regards,

This problem happened to me as well.
I am useing a fresh install of 8.10. I added the Report a Problem using the
Add/Remove programs menu.

I navigate to Applications - System Tools - Report a Problem, and click the

In the bottom panel, the program opens a Starting a Report a Problem...

Then, that goes away and NOTHING HAPPENS.

I suggest this bug is re-opened.

If you change your keyring password and leave it blank, it will stop

How long can it take to fix this?

The original bug was opened in September, and we have at least 2 dupes (18128
and 159569).
IMHO, network-manager-gnome is already a bad enough wireless client (compare it
to Intel's PROSet/Wireless, where you can see hidden SSID networks, manage
profiles, etc).

We urgently need to make it easy for users to login to their wireless
networks without these annoyances.

Re: [Bug 92652] Re: C-cedil not present in US-International keyboard

2007-12-19 Thread cenora
Paganini has expressed the true problem about this bug.

While I agree with Yamal, in that we would shift the problem to our
friends from Poland, Serbia, etc, the fact is that:

*Most* people are accustomed to the Windows international keyboard
behavior.

Although there is no defined standard, the effect is that when we install
Ubuntu for our family and friends they expect it to work about the same way
they are used to. If they encounter a small problem like this, they think:
This thing doesn't work.

My proposal is to follow the Windows standard, to facilitate widespread
adoption.

Those are my 2 cents...

 Hi Yamal,

I agree with you that consistency is of paramount importance, specially
when dealing with a complicated subject such as internationalization. My
gripe, however, is not with the fact that acute+c does not generate a
cedilla, but rather, with the change in behavior of the widely known US
International keyboard in Windows and X11. IMHO, the US_INTL old
version (or whatever) should mimic this behavior, and the new variant
should produce the consistent accented C.

Note that this *really* stands in the way of widespread adoption of
Linux in Brazil. It is very hard to explain to newcomers that they have
to edit obscure files to get something they get for free with other
 operating systems.

Re: [Bug 162541] Re: Google-earth display problems with Compiz

2007-12-03 Thread cenora
Chris,

Thank you for your very thorough and clear explanation.

While I understand this is not specifically a Ubuntu bug, I would like to
know who can escalate this to the Xorg developers? How can we (I) open this
bug report for them?

My concern is that 1) Ubuntu is shipping with compiz enabled by default (A
very cool feature indeed), and 2) there are a *lot* of people using Google
Earth.
Certainly someone must take a look into this, as it created a very bad
impression to end users.

Best Regards,

It seems that all the people experiencing this bug are using one of the
open-source drivers, either ati or intel (or i810). The free drivers do
not yet do redirected-direct-rendering, so apps using 3d (such as google
earth) interact badly with Compiz. The app using 3d (google earth, in
this case) won't be composited correctly; it will simply draw straight
to the screen, rather than drawing to an offscreen buffer that Compiz
can then combine with the other windows draw to the screen.

Marking this as WontFix: it's certainly a bug, but it's (a) not a bug in
Compiz - it's a limitation of the graphics drivers, and (b) the
extensive effort required to fix the drivers is not going to be done in
Ubuntu - it'll be done upstream by the Xorg developers.

If anyone can duplicate this using non-free drivers (nvidia) or with
google earth running in Xgl (and *not* on the underlying :0 X server)
 please reopen this bug.

[Bug 162499] [gutsy] Ubuntu 7.10 slow boot time

Public bug reported:

Fresh install of Gutsy on laptop takes over 3 minutes to boot.

Problem was not happening on 7.04, where usual boot time was around 1
minute. I have timed the boot time on 7.10 (no additional software other

A black screen is shown, whereas previously there was a Ubuntu bar

[Bug 162541] Google-earth display problems with Compiz

2007-11-13 Thread cenora
Public bug reported:

Fresh install of Gutsy, used Automatix to install Google-earth.

When Google-earth application runs, the earth map is drawn on every
workspace.

The rendering causes the screen to flicker, and other applications
become useless (because portions of the screen are flickering the earth
around).

Also, when other windows are put on top of the map, the map superimposes
itself over the other windows.

This is a problem with Compiz or XGL not being able to force Google-
earth to remain in its window.

Screenshots attached.

Re: [Bug 92629] Re: Gnome-network Manager randomly disconnects from Wireless

Alex:

This problem is apparently gone in 7.10. Thank goodness for the
improvements.

I think NM still is a long ways from being a good software. It is too
simple interface for that. For example, there isn't even the
possibility to save Profiles. It's my personal view that the Intel
ProSet Wireless utility is one of the greatest wireless clients I have
ever seen. I hope that NM applet can learn from them.

Add:

 2. Add your LOCALE to the end of the line beginning with cedilla.
If you use Ubuntu in English, your locale is probably: en or en_US.
Add any LOCALE that you usually use as well.

 Original line:
 cedilla Cedilla gtk20 /usr/share/locale

 Modified line:
 cedilla Cedilla gtk20 /usr/share/locale
