Re: [Bug 179042] Re: Videos tear and blink when enabling compiz [AMD Feature #7647] [EPR#257833]
I have 2 laptops: One Lenovo Thinkpad R61 (with Nvidia graphics card) and a Fujitsu Siemens Esprimo Mobile (with integrated intel graphics card). I did a fresh Jaunty install on both machines and installed Google Earth. The Nvidia PC runs smooth, the Intel doesn't. Micro Müeller explains what happens in detail in the original BUG report for this problem: - https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/compiz/+bug/162541 Summary: Wait for DRI2. Full description from Müeller: Every OpenGL-based application running under compiz (and being driven by OpenSource Xorg-drivers or ATI's flgrx) will yield rendering glitches as described, because the drivers in question are all still based on DRI and not DRI2. What DRI lacks and DRI2 introduces - among other things - is hw-accelerated indirect rendering. This affects composited window-managers (like compiz) mostly. Currently with DRI the DRM does not care if the desktop is composited or not and just hands any OpenGL-app, that asks for a rendering-context to draw to, a pointer to the front-buffer. Thus the OpenGL-app happy starts drawing to the front-buffer, ignoring the fact that there might be a compositing manager running and it should rather render to an off-screen area and let the compositing-manager do the work of blitting the OpenGL-apps window-contents to the front-buffer. DRI2 is more intelligent in that regard in fixes this. All that is overly simplified of course, but should give an idea about what is going on under the hood. On nvidia (using the proprietary driver) one does not run into this issue because nvidia does not use any form of DRI but their own infrastructure, which happens to have hw-accelerated indirect rendering for some time now. If one would be so bold to use the OpenSource nouveau-driver, they'd see the same rendering glitches. But nouveau will of course also switch to DRI2. Over time all OpenSource Xorg-video-driver will switch to DRI2 of course. It will take time. The first driver that is pretty far in development to adapt to DRI2, is the intel-video driver (for i915, i945 and i965 that should work already). Second in line will probalby be the OpenSource radeon-driver (the one without HD in the name). Chris Roddy, are you having trouble with 3D or video? I think the issues with 3D aren't yet fixed: 1. Running glxgears, if I rotate the desktop cube, the window border moves with the desktop, but the gears themselves stay in the same spot on the screen. 2. Running glchess from gnome-games package, when switching to 3D-View, there is a lot of blinking and switching back to 2D mode. But I think that's probably a different bug. [Bug 339489] [NEW] [Intrepid] Blank screen on boot using Nvidia accelerated drivers
Public bug reported: Before I write this, here is some history: I had nvidia proprietary drivers installed and working perfectly on this pc. After working hard to make Ubuntu work, and only following the standard system upgrades offered by the system, I lost all sound. After about a month trying to fix that, I got tired and decided to start from scratch. Here's what I have now: Fresh 8.10 install on Lenovo R61 with nvidia 140M graphics card. After this, over 200 updates were available - OK installed. Now I wanted to enable the Normal Desktop effects. I go to System - Preferences - Appearance and select Normal from the Visual Effects tab. System tells me to install the Nvidia drivers, which I do. Reboot. Blank screen after Ubuntu bar loads. To fix this, I use the xfix (try to fix X server) command from the Recovery mode option in Grub. Ok, back to Gnome. Now, going back to the Visual Effects and selecting Normal gives me error: Desktop effects could not be enabled. Frustration (I cannot resproduce the automatic driver installation from there any longer). Last chance: I go into System - Administration - Hardware drivers. Great! I see 2 options for Nvidia: Nvidia accelerated graphics driver (version 173) Nvidia accelerated graphics driver (version 177) [Recommended] I select 177. It shows small progress bar, completes to 100%. Reboot: BLANK SCREEN after ubuntu bar finishes. Again, xfix. I try 173. Same behavior, blank screen. Hi Bryce, Thanks for pointing that out. So I have 2 options: 1. Stay with the Nvidia drivers and only use its settings tool to control dual monitors; 2. Uninstall Nvidia drivers and then capplet will find the external displays; In case of 1, shouldn't Ubuntu disable the standard screen resolution settings AND substitute it with Nvidia's? [Bug 307855] [NEW] screen resolution monitor doesn't refresh when dual monitor is plugged
Public bug reported: I am very happy to see improvements in the dual monitor settings in ubuntu. I have a laptop and an external full HD monitor, Ubuntu 8.10 which I am able to make function after spending some time configuring the displays (and rebooting). I am only able to make it work using Nvidia X Server settings. The problem is that when I open Preferences - Screen Resolution, the external display doesn't show. I do press the Detect Displays button in the Monitor Resolution Settings window, but NOTHING HAPPENS. On the other hand, Nvidia X Server settings does refresh and shows both screens. ** Affects: ubuntu Importance: Undecided Status: New -- screen resolution monitor doesn't refresh when dual monitor is plugged https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/307855 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Sorry, but the fix did not work. Here's what happens: Once we exit the SageTV code activation question using CRTL+ALT+F5, I am able to log into my home directory. Re: [Bug 92652] Re: C-cedil not present in US-International keyboard
Paganini has expressed the true problem about this bug. While I agree with Yamal, in that we would shift the problem to our friends from Poland, Serbia, etc, the fact is that: *Most* people are accustomed to the Windows international keyboard behavior. Although there is no defined standard, the effect is that when we install Ubuntu for our family and friends they expect it to work about the same way they are used to. If they encounter a small problem like this, they think: This thing doesn't work. My proposal is to follow the Windows standard, to facilitate widespread adoption. Those are my 2 cents... Cenora On Dec 18, 2007 5:00 AM, paganini [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Hi Yamal, I agree with you that consistency is of paramount importance, specially when dealing with a complicated subject such as internationalization. My gripe, however, is not with the fact that acute+c does not generate a cedilla, but rather, with the change in behavior of the widely known US International keyboard in Windows and X11. IMHO, the US_INTL old version (or whatever) should mimic this behavior, and the new variant should produce the consistent accented C. Note that this *really* stands in the way of widespread adoption of Linux in Brazil. It is very hard to explain to newcomers that they have to edit obscure files to get something they get for free with other operating systems. Re: [Bug 162541] Re: Google-earth display problems with Compiz
Chris, Thank you for your very thorough and clear explanation. While I understand this is not specifically a Ubuntu bug, I would like to know who can escalate this to the Xorg developers? How can we (I) open this bug report for them? My concern is that 1) Ubuntu is shipping with compiz enabled by default (A very cool feature indeed), and 2) there are a *lot* of people using Google Earth. Certainly someone must take a look into this, as it created a very bad impression to end users. Best Regards, Cenora On Dec 3, 2007 2:50 AM, Chris Halse Rogers [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: It seems that all the people experiencing this bug are using one of the open-source drivers, either ati or intel (or i810). The free drivers do not yet do redirected-direct-rendering, so apps using 3d (such as google earth) interact badly with Compiz. The app using 3d (google earth, in this case) won't be composited correctly; it will simply draw straight to the screen, rather than drawing to an offscreen buffer that Compiz can then combine with the other windows draw to the screen. Marking this as WontFix: it's certainly a bug, but it's (a) not a bug in Compiz - it's a limitation of the graphics drivers, and (b) the extensive effort required to fix the drivers is not going to be done in Ubuntu - it'll be done upstream by the Xorg developers. If anyone can duplicate this using non-free drivers (nvidia) or with google earth running in Xgl (and *not* on the underlying :0 X server) please reopen this bug. ** Changed in: compiz (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided = Medium Status: Confirmed = Won't Fix -- Google-earth display problems with Compiz https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/162541 You received this bug notification because you are a direct subscriber of the bug. -- Google-earth display problems with Compiz https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/162541 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Every Ubuntu release should kickstart a similar video, upon new user logon and new installations. ** Affects: ubuntu Importance: Undecided Status: New -- Ubuntu has no tour video https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/158369 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 49270] Re: Laptop touch pad automatically generates mouse clicks
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 47971 *** https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/47971 Same problem here on IBM ThinkpadT42. I had to DISABLE the mouse tap. I've seen this issue on every Ubuntu release... Not sure why it is still here... To disable tapping: sudo gedit /etc/X11/xorg.conf then in the Section InputDevice Identifier Synaptics Touchpad Add: Option MaxTapTime 0 to the end of that section and restart your computer. -- Laptop touch pad automatically generates mouse clicks https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/49270 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
Re: [Bug 92652] Re: C-cedil not present in US-International keyboard
Great and simple workaround!!! Thanks!!! Although this is still not an excuse for Ubuntu... Why can't they simply add these lines? Itś a simple bug to fix. cenora On 10/22/07, Volanin [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: HOW TO FIX this in GUTSY in 2 steps: 1. Edit the file: /usr/lib/gtk-2.0/2.10.0/immodule- files.d/libgtk2.0-0.immodules 2. [Bug 154808] Fresh 7.10 install on external HD messes MBR of primary HD
Public bug reported: A fresh install of 7.10 on an external HD corrupted the primary HD's MBR. The primary HD has XP. Re: [Bug 92629] Re: Gnome-network Manager randomly disconnects from Wireless
Hello Alexander: It is an IBM Thinkpad T42 with an Intel(R) PRO/Wireless 2200BG Network Connection device. I am using Network Manager Gnome to monitor the connection. Everything is updated to the latest and greatest. I am installing Ubuntu on the Windows XP laptop to see if the same issue happens there.
