[Bug 1947525] [NEW] Accessibilty Zoom causes crash/logout

2021-10-17 Thread Norman Davie
Public bug reported:

How to reproduce:
Set Zoom on and magnification to 2.0, and magnification pushes content around.

Move mouse to side or up and screen will blank and be logged out.
It will be extremely difficult to turn off zoom because every attempt to move
mouse will cause you to log out.

Getting control again:

Use Super key, type accessibility, turn off zoom

[Bug 773867] Re: menu bar corrupted and unreadable. still works.

2011-05-05 Thread Andrew Davie
I can now reproduce this bug. It's *definitely* a Compiz related bug.
Simply go to compiz settings manager and enable wobbly windows.
Instant top-menu bar corruption. For me, anyway.
Cheers
A

[Bug 773867] [NEW] menu bar corrupted and unreadable. still works.

2011-04-30 Thread Andrew Davie
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

The top menu bar has corrupted. No icon or text is legible. However the
items in the bar still work. For example, I can click where the time
display *was* and I get the calendar dropdown. But the time is not
visible on the menu bar anymore -- just a graduated stippled corruption.
I also notice a blank icon space in the unity bar left of screen -
-not sure if that is related. When I do the workspace switcher, the
menu bar on those 4 screens is identically corrupt. I'd previously seen
the corruption on the workspace switch mini-screens, but now it's on my
main screen too.

I get this, too. I've found that if the left-mouse button stops working
(on my external mouse), then if I click on the touchpad left-mouse
button, all reverts to normal. It seems to be stuck in some sort of
selection mode (sometimes text highlights as I move the mouse).

Re: [Bug 439448] Re: Visual corruption affecting several panel applets

2010-10-14 Thread Andrew Davie
What I find quite interesting is that when an icon is corrupt (for
example, my wireless network icon is half-obscured by half of the CPU
temperature icon shape), and the icon is subsequently modified (e.g., I
disable and re-enable wireless network causing the icon to animate), the
only part of the icon redrawn is that part NOT obscured by the incorrect
half of the CPU temp. icon. In other words, only the currently correct
bit of the icon is redrawn and the bad bit is always bad.
Even when I totally remove the CPU temperature from the panel, the
wireless icon is STILL corrupted with half the temperature icon.
This is pretty strange. I find it hard to think of a programming
scenario which would allow this. It's almost like the buffer for the
icons is the right size, but the animate/draw code somehow thinks the
width of the icons is smaller than it actually is. So when the icon
buffers are blitted to the panel, they're the correct size, but we
always get whatever is in the icon bitmap buffer. And since the icon
only ever draws to a smaller width than it actually is, we always have
the corrupt bit. That's my guess, anyway.
So I'd be looking for some corruption of the icon width, not some sort
of incorrect overdraw of the icon. My guess is that what's overdrawn is
actually what was previously in the icon buffer before the width got
corrupted. Just a guess.

Does anyone have any clues about what is the bugged component? We thought it

experiencing the bug anymore (me included). Another diference is that the
theme I'm using (Wasp-Murrine) doesn't have any backgournd image. Do you
think this might be the problem? Does corruption happens with a non-Murrine
 theme with background image?

In conclusion, what are the possibilities?

 1 - Compiz + background image
 2 - Compiz + Murrine + background image
 3 - Another possibility?

[Bug 49521] Re: Screen locks up black on laptop lid close.

2010-08-11 Thread Andrew Davie
I have a very similar bug. This has appeared over a number of OS
installations. Currently with 10.04. I'm running a Dell Inspiron 5400 and
having issues with the screen going black, and remaining so. This happens most
often when I've had the lid closed, but perhaps 10% of the time I'm just
sitting watching my screen and *bango* black screen. Mouse movement doesn't
bring it back. I have all powersaving options turned off. No hybernate, or
screen blank, or screensaver. This can happen even just a few seconds after
key/mouse interaction (though not often). I have not tried any of the suggested
solutions, but just wanted to add that when this does happen to me, I've found
that opening and shutting the lid... many times... eventually gets me to where
the backlight comes on again. I can also sometimes see a very black impression
of windows onscreen, so I know that the LCD is displaying stuff but the
backlight isn't on. It's pretty obvious when I shut/open the lid when I've
got it... when it's OK the screen is blank, but I can see the backlight is
operational. I then just touch the mousepad to get the display back to normal.
Every once in a while it takes dozens of close/open tests to get it to work,
and once in a blue moon I just (hard reset) reboot and it's right straight away.
Very annoying little bug.
Next time I will try the suggested workarounds and report on progress.

2010-05-30 Thread Andrew Davie
I'm getting random evolution crashes, too, after an upgrade to 10.04
Don't know much about how to find out what it is, but I did spot these...

b...@uniboo:~$ dmesg |grep evolution

several times a day.
Hope this gets fixed quickly.

[Bug 574439] Re: Karmic to Lucid upgrade behind proxy seems to fail/only with two hours delay

2010-05-05 Thread Davie Robertson
Update Manager in System Monitor, Processes shows inet_wait_for_connect

In my instance I had a 2 hour wait for the Update Info screen to pop-up
to tell me about the update after clicking the Upgrade button in Update
Manager, I then had another 1 hour wait for Update Manager to prompt me
for my Admin credentials. Now the update is installing.

Normal package updates have been/are working fine.

[Bug 532633] Re: [Master] Window Control buttons: position/order/alignment

2010-04-30 Thread Andrew Davie
On my upgrade from 9.10 I was absolutely aghast to see the new position
for the window controls. I have read the justifications on the various
blogs and in the bug reports, and the only thing that I can really say
is what the were they thinking?!! This is, in my opinion, a very
serious miscalculation by the team. I have changed the position back to
the right hand side as will, I imaging, nearly everyone who can actually
figure out how to do it. I think the designers who have forced this on
users have, to put it bluntly, pretty much lost the plot. I cannot
believe the community, in general, would like this change. Had I not
been able to move them, I would have changed back to 9.10 and stayed
there. Thank you so much to ALL who have contributed to a great free
OS... but please, no more changes like this one.

[Bug 419857] [NEW] crash when adding new fonts

2009-08-27 Thread Andrew Davie
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: openoffice.org

Ubuntu 8.10 OS. OpenOffice Writer openoffice.org-writer 1:2.4.1-11ubuntu2.1
I had writer open with a document, added new fonts to Ubunty by dropping TTF
files in /.fonts
Two noticeable problems; first, when closing the document the dialogs were
shown with a different font than usual. Secondly, other open documents
completely crashed at some point whilst I was adding fonts.
It's clear that writer is indexing fonts using the order/numbering of the fonts
when it first fires up. This screws it up when it goes to display a font at a
later stage -- it gets the wrong font, or someting at least related to extra
fonts now present causes it to crash. Reproducible.

[Bug 293405] Re: crackling sound when PCM muted

2008-11-14 Thread davie
this looks like a duplicate of #272321 which is currently assigned to
the kernel team, but in the comments people have suggested that removing
pulseaudio resolves the problem...

[Bug 293405] Re: crackling sound when PCM muted

2008-11-04 Thread davie
I'm also getting noise when muted (popping/static), but this goes away when the
volume is at anything other than zero.
Interestingly in alsa volume control muting PCM in the vloume control
produces the static noise, muting master produces no sound (as you would
expect from mute).
This is on a dell d620 laptop.

2008-10-22 Thread davie
Looks like sun has finally released JDK6 release 10
(http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp).
Once this is packaged then this bug should finally go away.
In the meantime it's easy enough to download/install it manually.

[Bug 118983] Re: compiz java windows always grey

2008-08-30 Thread davie
Aris - what jre/jdk are you using, and have you used the workaround
AWT_TOOLKIT=MToolkit?
Without doing either of these 2 it is still not fixed for me (although it does
happen less frequently than it used to).
It's a known jdk bug, so I don't really understand what would fix it other
than the fix in the jdk actually being released, which seems to be taking a
long time to happen.

[Bug 243432] Re: rhythmbox : does not play the songs at times. When I click play song, no response

2008-08-09 Thread Michael G. Davie
I have had the same problem on several occasions. It doesn't happen all
the time, but enough to be annoying. Today I couldn't get any of the
songs to play. When I turned my laptop back on tonight and went to
Rhytmbox the songs started first ti me I clicked on it.

They were imported from an original CD to my library using Rythmbox. I
also run Hardy Heron 8.04 with kernel version 2.6.24.19. My laptop is
an Toshiba A75-s209.

[Bug 249232] [NEW] no tvout on ati 9250

2008-07-16 Thread davie
Public bug reported:

Tv-out (s-video) setup requires manual xrandr commands.
Using the open source drivers for the at-9250 - lspci reports 01:00.0 VGA
compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc RV280 [Radeon 9200 PRO] (rev 01)

In order to let it detect S-video displays you need to manually call the
following command, otherwise no s-video output is detected at all.
xrandr --set load_detection 1

Then using the normal screen resolution tool (or xrandr manually) lets
you set up the tv-out output.

This is inconvenient if i want to use an s-video display normally, and
really annoying if i want to use only an s-video display - X will not
auto-configure it.

There is supposed to be work-around of the following entries in xorg.conf, but
if i do that it behaves strangely. If i have both an s-video output and a
monitor i get the monitor behaving correctly plus a black and white s-video
display showing a small part of the screen. If i unplug the monitor and use
only the s-video out i get garbage on the s-video output - it's detected
something, but it's not comprehensible.

[Bug 37764] Re: no tv-out support with this driver

2008-07-15 Thread davie
using the open source ati driver the TV-out is not auto-configured, i have to
manually turn on detection with:
xrandr --output S-video --set load_detection 1

This means that i can't use a TV as the sole output without changing the
xorg.conf file, or manually using xrandr.
Does anyone have this working, or should i open a new bug?

2008-04-29 Thread davie
There's an interesting update to the sun bug which suggests that they may have
made some progress on a fix, but doesn't give details about what version it
will be available in:
State 8-Fix Available, bug
it looks like the property is missing because of sime thread race between WM,
us and
X-server. It looks like the best way to fix this is do not read the property
at random time, but listen for property change events fot it.

[Bug 118983] Re: beryl java windows always grey

2008-02-20 Thread davie
I still see intermittently on 1.6.0_03-b05 - mostly in dialog (modal) boxes.
The sun bug for this is marked as fixed
(http://bugs.sun.com/bugdatabase/view_bug.do?bug_id=6429775), but there are
plenty of recent comments suggesting that it's still a problem.
exporting AWT_TOOLKIT=MToolkit isn't a long term solution, Mtoolkit was
replaced by default with XToolkit in java 5, and is likely to be removed at
some point.

There is also a thread about the open sun bug here
http://forums.java.net/jive/thread.jspa?threadID=33311.
starting post is:

Hi,

I have a bug 6429775 (Xgl/Compiz/Java 1.5/Swing problem) which I considered
fixed (long time ago),
but according to comments on this bug we still have some problems under Compiz
:(
I've tried NB 6rc1+jdk6u3 but everything looks ok on my Ubuntu 7.10 :(
So, I wonder if someone on this forum has experienced the problem and if yes,
it would be nice
to know how the problem can be reproducible (and in what environment)

[Bug 65683] Re: Unable to cancel a fsck

2008-01-26 Thread davie
This is more than just an inconvenience - occassionally i'll boot my laptop on
a short train journey knowing i've got enough battery left for 10 - 15 mins,
then fsck kicks in and there's a fair possibility that the battery will be dead
before the fsck finishes.
I'd quite like to have the option to cancel the fsck back, and just boot as
normal.
Ideally the fsck just wouldn't run when when on battery power - someone else
seems to have reported that as #116289

[Bug 92194] Re: HAL is not built with libsmbios

2007-09-18 Thread davie
I'm running the gutsy alpha, updated today (20070918), and still have issues

Manager Brightness Applet still can't control the brightness, and I don't see
the option to dim the screen after a certain amount of time in Power Manager.

Thanks Erik, i grabbed the source for the package (and dependencies including
libsmbios, compiled and installed the deb, added the module dcdbas to
/etc/modules and it worked fine (on a dell d620).
Looks like the debs in gutsy still aren't built with dell-backlight support
correctly - they don't contain the following files
/usr/lib/hal/hald-addon-dell-backlight
/usr/share/hal/fdi/policy/10osvendor/10-dell-laptop-brightness.fdi.
