[Bug 195240] Re: therm_adt746x kernel module is not auto loaded
Hi, sorry I didn't answer. Thing is I no longer own this machine (iBook), so there's no way or me to test it. I can only say that this bug was there since forever, and I mean through many kernel upgrades, and even when I used gentoo before ubuntu. I would suppose a normal kernel upgrade wouldn't take care of that - unless some specific commit addressed this issue, or else it was fixed through udev or something like that. On the other hand if nobody can testify about it then there's nothing much to do understandably, even though it might cause overheating and be dangerous and people might not notice it so easily (without being knowledgeable about it) -- therm_adt746x kernel module is not auto loaded https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/195240 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Oy, I lost track... We're actually in the same situation we were in before. It's going to VT but the lack of s2ram or hal pmu helper thingie causes it not to actually suspend. So the way I see it the problem is now that the hal helper is still available and works, but no longer used, and the s2ram that is supposedly what should be used is not available. -- no suspend available on powerpc (iBook G4, PMU) https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/189851 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 190754] Re: Bad multitasking / responsiveness in Hardy
Shane: It certainly is, but probably makes sense to know which flash plugin you use. I know for certain gnash goes through pulseaudio if it's available - and if not probably just alsa. Don't know about the adobe flash plugin. What is not clear to me still from this bug is whether this issue is a sound specific problem (lag and so on) - and then this is either pulse or alsa problem. Or whether this is a general responsiveness and multi tasking problem - and then most chances the kernel is to blame... (or some new configuration policy) I personally suffer mostly from general unresponsiveness and slowness - sometimes the sound indeed halts when I just switch to another window (alt-tab, or just click-to-focus). And sometimes it's much more annoying - for example during a system update, refresh package list or install of packages the whole system is hardly responsive, slows down any interactive app, like firefox or a terminal and so on. This issue is very annoying - and certainly not related to sound. So in the end is this bug about this problem, and just uses sound as a manifestation of it? or is it just a sound specific bug? -- Bad multitasking / responsiveness in Hardy https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/190754 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 200580] [NEW] powernowd init script does not start the daemon on ppc (ondemand problem)
Public bug reported: On my ibook G4, so PPC machine - powernowd init script doesn't start powernowd. Now cpufreq doesn't work with ondemand on these machines, and I found out the problem in init script is exactly with the on_demand() function. It should be noted that when switching to ondemand with echo there's no error, but simply dmesg shows: ondemand governor failed, too long transition latency of HW, fallback to performance governor and stays on the previous governor. So it's possible on_demand() doesn't know how to detect this. I am not sure if my problem is the same, I have an iBook G4 1.42Ghz. powernowd doesn't start on so I don't have cpufreq. [Bug 195240] [NEW] therm_adt746x kernel module is not auto loaded
Public bug reported: some powerpc needs this module to be loaded so that the fans can start up when heat is at a certain level. Right now, and so was it for every release I used of ubuntu (since dapper for sure, maybe before) - the modules doesn't load automatically on boot. I have to manually modprobe it, or add it to /etc/modules. I suspect many are running their machines without this module loaded and risk overheating their hardware. [Bug 189854] [NEW] sound is complete noise when pulseaudio is running
Public bug reported: I have upgraded from gutsy to hardy. I have never used pulseaudio before, and haven't touched any sound settings in gutsy or after the distupgrade. Now in hardy whenever i play a file, i get a loud noise and no sound. I found out that killing the pulseaudio instances that were autostarted I get back sound. I'm not sure what that means, I have no experience with this system - and didn't know if I needed to configure something manually. When I kill pulseaudio, it seems the autodetect sink of gstreamer just uses normal alsa and thus it works. It also works then if i keep pulseaudio and manually select alsasink. I also found out that the gstreamer test that creates just a sine sound DOES work, but in totem/rhythmbox with gstreamer it's only the noise. At the same time, aplay or even vlc (which I guess just bypass pulseaudio directly to alsa). I will gladly supply more information to help debug this or find the problem, but I'll need some guidance :) ** Affects: ubuntu Importance: Undecided Status: New -- sound is complete noise when pulseaudio is running https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/189854 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 189851] Re: no suspend available on powerpc (iBook G4, PMU)
I can now confirm the following: $ sudo chvt 2 ; sudo /usr/lib/hal/hal-system-power-pmu sleep ; sudo chvt 7 that command works perfectly - suspend and resumes, and everything seems to work perfectly. On the other hand, with pm-utils - which I understand is the way currently used: $ sudo chvt 2 ; sudo pm-suspend ; sudo chvt 7 this will give me: Error: kernel cannot suspend to ram. Now since with the first command all works fine, obviously the kernel does support suspend, so the faulty part must be some interface between pm-utils and PMU on powerpc. Please notice that the vt switching is necessary on this machine (radeon open source, r300) - otherwise suspend works but resume fails. In gutsy that was a problem that wasn't yet fixed, see bug: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/144305 -- no suspend available on powerpc (iBook G4, PMU) https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/189851 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Public bug reported: Binary package hint: pm-utils Since upgrading to hardy, gnome-power-manager doesn't offer the option to suspend the machine any more. So far it seems to me that the recent move to pm-utils is related to this. the command 'pm-is-suspend' indeed claims suspend is not supported on the machine - but that must be wrong, as it was supported for a long time. Manually using the hal pmu helper i could suspend but not resume (probably vt switch problem). [Bug 189682] [NEW] powernowd fails because of missing 'ignore_nice_load'
Public bug reported: With hardy and recent kernels I noticed that powernowd does not autostart anymore. Actually the init script fails and the reason is: /etc/rc2.d/S50powernowd: 175: Cannot create /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu0/cpufreq/ondemand/ignore_nice_load: Directory nonexistend Indeed I have no ondemand directory there. Ondemand is loaded but on my system it cannot be used (ppc G4) - so I'm completely dependent on userspace and powernowd for cpufreq management. To make things clear I can manually run: sudo powernowd - and everything works - so the problem is the init script that just fails, probably because of some change in recent kernels (?) that ommits this ondemand configuration directory in /sys/. ** Affects: ubuntu Importance: Undecided Status: New -- powernowd fails because of missing 'ignore_nice_load' https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/189682 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

docsnyderchristoph: This was actually the first time I compile a kernel under ubuntu - with creating a .deb: maybe i could post the deb here for people to try? I used this guide: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Kernel/Compile what you want to do is get the source from the hardy repository (linux-source package i think) and untar it in /usr/src. You would need to install the tools as explained in that guide. Use 'make menuconfig' find these configurations and enable them as compiled in (* instead of M). afterwards run the command from the guide to build the kernel into a deb and just install it. Now this bug was just marked as fixed and it seems it was indeed fixed in ubuntu git kernel a few days ago - so I'm supposing the next version released will boot OK on our powerpc machines. *** This bug is a duplicate of bug 183338 *** https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/183338 OK, I compiled successfully a kernel from the hardy package, with the missing: CONFIG_BLK_DEV_IDE_PMAC=y CONFIG_BLK_DEV_IDE_PMAC_ATA100FIRST=y CONFIG_BLK_DEV_IDEDMA_PMAC=y and so far it seems to work well, haven't noticed other problems too, but haven't tested extensively. Somebody tried that already and reported it doesn't help - I understand you just added the lines to .config - that usually shouldn't be done manually but through a config frontend (menuconfig...). The thing is that these three configs depend on CONFIG_BLK_DEV_IDE=y - it must be compiled in kernel and not as module - as it is currently in ubuntu - That's why the PMAC options don't exist. Why this is so I have no idea - but once it's compiled in and PMAC can be selected it works OK. Would be good now to advance the fix of this problem - and if more people can get the grip on a manually compiled kernel in the meanwhile we can test it to see there are no other regressions :) -- [Hardy] Regression: missing CONFIG_BLK_DEV_IDEDMA_PMAC in config makes kernel unusable on apple mac mini https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/185862 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 161741] ibook G4 doesn't boot because of framebuffer
Public bug reported: I installed Gutsy on my iBook 14'' 1.42Ghz (G4), although the livecd had problems booting - known issues not yet fixed but already have bug reports. After installing the system fails to boot right at the beginning because of the framebuffer. the screen shows blurry pixels of different colors, and nothing is responsive. Once I start with video=ofonly i can boot normally, but I don't get the bootsplash. ** Affects: ubuntu Importance: Undecided Status: New -- ibook G4 doesn't boot because of framebuffer https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/161741 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 140977] suspend-resume regression in ibook under kernel 2.6.22-9 and up
Public bug reported: Starting with gutsy kernel 2.6.22-9 all newer kernels don't resume from suspend on my ibook. I get just a black screen and I can only hard shutdown from there. Before that it worked OK, and actually I have been using 2.6.22-8 for a few months now continuously and successfully. I can assume then that something went bad between 2.6.22-8 and 2.6.22-9. ** Affects: ubuntu Importance: Undecided Status: New -- suspend-resume regression in ibook under kernel 2.6.22-9 and up https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/140977 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 140954] gspca is not available for powerpc in gutsy anymore
Public bug reported: It seems the gspca.ko module driver for many webcams is no longer available in the kernel/module packages for powerpc of version 2.6.22 (aka gutsy kernel). This is a regression as it was there in feisty and maybe before, and it is still there for other architectures. ** Affects: ubuntu Importance: Undecided Status: New -- gspca is not available for powerpc in gutsy anymore https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/140954 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 126778] oops in bcm43xx when resuming from suspend
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: linux-source-2.6.22 On a powerpc machine, this is a regression. everything was working fine in earlier ubuntu versions, as well as in 2.6.22-1. With 2.6.22-7 and 2.6.22-8 when I resume from suspend very often the kernel hangs with an oops about bcm43xx, which shows up in the screen. [Bug 112374] Re: touchpad fuziness on iBook
Strange - this has never happened to me on OS X. More than that my sister uses her iBook exclusively with OS X and she never once had such a problem during 3 years of usage. I do believe that the driver can be made to adapt or overcome the problem when it shows up. It didn't work for me in dapper, but as I already said it did work in gentoo many months ago before I switched to dapper. [Bug 69607] Re: DRI very slow on ATI Radeon 9600 on PowerPC
Yes. I'm not sure what's the difference between the two packages, but i think the ubuntu one is a snapshot before the official release, there's must be some changes between the two snapshots. Either that or it's a packaging problem. At any rate, indeed it boosts the glxgears score, but it's not enough. I still have problems: with ppracer some races only give 2-3 fps while others work fine - but only in 16 bits depth. I tried also flight gear and it's as slow as without acceleration at all. Plus compiz doesn't work - it just crashes the X server. [Bug 61607] Re: 3d rendering performance regression Dapper->Edgy with Radeon 9600 M10
I have succeeded in backporting newer mesa packages from debian repositories into my edgy system. This has resulted in 3D working much better. instead of 20-25 fps i used to get in glxgears I now get around 1500 fps. Plus glxgears doesn't exhaust 100% cpu anymore. These I thought were very good signs. Next thing I tried was to run ppracer. Before the game including the menus were unusable. Now the menus are ok, but in the game itself I only get 3 fps - it's playable but hardly. I don't know what that means. If anyone has any idea what could it be, and what other tests I could run, and in general try to get more into this problem I would appreciate... -- 3d rendering performance regression Dapper->Edgy with Radeon 9600 M10 https://launchpad.net/bugs/61607 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
