Re: [Bug 94333] Re: [regression] sound card not working after cleaninstall of Dapper, Edgy and Feisty

2009-05-04 Thread Gary
This was a very frustrating problem for my Creative Audigy card. I did an
upgrade to 9.04 from 8.10 AND the problem still existed on Gnome. I then
installed KDE, since my machine was pretty robust. Things started to bog
down for various reasons, so I decided to do a clean install of KUBUNTU
9.04, since I am still in learning/test mode, i.e. nothing to lose really.
So far, the sound issue went away. There is definitely some problem related
to the 8 series kernal update and the carry-over to a 9.04 upgrade.

Just curious if anyone who had this issue was able to test the latest
Jaunty 9.04 release yet and confirm if this issue remains? Please let us
know. Thanks.

Status in “linux-source-2.6.20” source package in Ubuntu: Won't Fix

Bug description:
Although it is visible, Ubuntu cannot fully configure my sound card.

I have a Soundblaster Live card CT4760, and have also tried an SB Live
Platinum SB0060 card (both use emu10k1 driver) and an older Soundblaster
(using the ens1371 driver). Same behaviour. The machine is running an Intel
D850GB motherboard (without the onboard sound option), with the last
available firmware. The most interesting thing is that the Live Platinum
card had the attached LiveDrive bay, and the headphone out put on it worked.
None of the connections and channels on the PCI card itself worked, yet the
LiveDrive extension was configured as the primary audio device. No "Volume"
or "Master Volume" track was available in the mixer, the primary was just
"Headphone Out".

I have tried a clean installation of Dapper, Edgy and Feisty. All exhibit
the same problem. However, I used the same hardware years ago with either
Warty or Hoary and had no issues. The sound worked out of the box.

Anyways, without further ado, here are the symptoms.

[Bug 354548] Re: Atheros AR5008 ath9k cannot connect to WPA

2009-05-02 Thread Gary
I'm still seeing this behavior in 9.04 with this:

06:00.0 Network controller: Atheros Communications Inc. AR928X Wireless
Network Adapter (PCI-Express) (rev 01)

For some reason, if you type:

  /etc/init.d/NetworkManager stop

And then use iwconfig to setup the wireless network manually, it works
great. I'm currently at starbucks on an open network, so I just typed:

  iwconfig wlan0 essid attwifi
  dhclient wlan0

Seems like NetworkManager has some strange issue with this card...?

2009-01-25 Thread gary

Hey Dan, Yes if you could tell me in a fairly un-complex way how to go about
fixing this then i would appreciate it. Don't really need skype but I'm told
that might be the only way to receive web cam messages .. Unless you know of
anothert way to do that to. I do have camorama installed but i haven't got a
webcam myself as of yet ( have one but it's for bill gates only) and that may
change everything when that is plugged in?? Thanks.

[Bug 69247] Re: [ooo-build] Crash when browsing document templates when Assistive Technologies (accessibility) used

2009-03-11 Thread gary
Assistive Technologies is off, but OO has crashed ever on Templates
since the installation of 8.04. Took out the Ubuntu version and
reinstalled it, same problem. Tried Oxygen Office, same problem. These
are the installed Templates, not additional/third-party templates. If
there are any other ideas, I would love to hear them.

[Bug 300693] Re: Thinkpad T61p hardlock flashing caps lock

2009-02-18 Thread Gary
fwiw, I'm a CentOS, T61p user and have the same issue. I've done some
yum updates within the past month, changed some video settings, tried
updating the video drivers and probably some other things where now if I
switch from wireless at home to wired\wireless at work, I get the caps
lock blinking and freeze. I often go in and out of suspend.

[Bug 94333] Re: [regression] sound card not working after clean install of Dapper, Edgy and Feisty

2009-03-26 Thread Gary
Well, someone pulled the plug too soon. I had an Intel board running
perfectly with its Audigy emu10k1 driver on Ubuntu 8.10, kernal
2.6.27-7, but when I updated the new install with 278+ updates to
2.6.27-11, no way I can get the card to work. In fact on this system, I
recall running the old kernal and regaining sound on a previous install,
but when I tried it again on this install (running 2.6.27-7), could not
regain the sound. Ended up destroying the system, since I am a newbie,
after going through the Sound Troubleshooting guide. Have no clue what
happened. Have an old Dell system at work that exhibits no such
problems, so it must be Audigy centric.

[Bug 51109] K menu>System Settings>Display

2006-06-27 Thread Gary
Public bug reported:

When setting monitor power management using in the K
menu in Administrator mode, screen flickers after logging in as 'sudo'
and a new xorg.conf file is generated which has the output below. Upon a
computer restart X server fails with Ring Buffer error. Note that the
original is renamed as xorg.conf.1.

Output of rewritten xorg.conf file:

[Bug 52092] Live CD fails to boot after powerup

2006-07-06 Thread gary
Public bug reported:

My HP Pavilion n5470 laptop (info below) behaves oddly when I attempt to
boot the Dapper Live CD. When I attempt to boot from powerup, it freezes
between "Configuring X" and "Preparing restricted drivers". When,
however, I boot up Windows (Win2k Professional, SP 4) first then insert
the Live CD then "restart" -- the Live CD boots up just fine. (FWIW,
Knoppix Live dvd 4.0.2 boots just fine every time)

This behavior is reproducible.

I'd love to installer Dapper on this machine but I'm reluctant to do so
... for obvious reasons

Thanks for help.

[Bug 51109] Re: [Bug 51109] Re: K menu>System Settings>Display

2006-08-30 Thread Gary
John,

I haven't tried to set the power management using the administrator
function since June. The system is working for me without doing this, so
I am leaving well enough alone.

I wouldn't know whether this is still an issue with my system. And
personally, I do not feel like taking the chance on having to copy over
my xorg.conf file again.

Sorry I couldn't be of service...

[Bug 51109] Re: [Bug 51109] Re: K menu>System Settings>Display

2006-08-30 Thread Gary
John,

I could reproduce the error but I choose not to. I reported the bug
along with the platform and a description. If it happened once on Dapper
KDE 3.5.2 then it more than likely would happen again seeing as there
has been no fix for this as of yet.

And I am not the only one to submit a bug report about this. I think
you'd be wise to keep this open instead of rejecting it just because I
choose not to mess with a stable system.

My 2 cents,

Gary

Ok John. I am running Dapper 6.06.1 so maybe the issue is resolved but I
don't want to take a chance since my system is rather stable.

[Bug 224802] Re: after sudo su (su -), gnome-terminal [or a virtual terminal "-bash"] "exit"s ("logout"s) with any single keypress

2009-06-28 Thread Gary
This is still happening, it appears to be related to "su" and not sudo.
Has anyone been able to figure out what causes this? I'm having this
issue on real hardware and not a VPS, so it's not the xen kernel...

[Bug 172788] Re: Ubuntu won't boot on desktop

2009-05-25 Thread Gary
I'm experiencing this same problem on an HP pavilion a1320 desktop. It
won't recognize the feisty live cd as bootable. The same CD works on
two other machines that I have but not the HP.

Just to be sure that it's not something screwy in the boot order I went
so far as to remov the hard disk from the boot order and it came up with
the no bootable OS found error.

BIOS version is 3.24, which is the latest.

Here's the info on the CD that I'm using

$ ls -la ubuntu-9.04-desktop-i386.iso
-rw-r--r-- 1 732909568 2009-05-24 16:42 ubuntu-9.04-desktop-i386.iso

** Changed in: ubuntu

** Summary changed:

+ Ubuntu won't boot on HP desktop

** Description changed:

On an HP (x86) desktop, the BIOS can't find the boot disc. It was

- Unfortuneately, details as to the nature of the bug is vague, as the
- only symtom is the same as if there was no bootable OS.

[Bug 23293] Re: Nautilus windows should close on unmount

2009-08-13 Thread Gary
I'd still highly recommend just closing the window, or at least making
it an option somewhere. I work in an environment where I'm constantly
plugging in and unplugging USB storage devices and I inevitably end up
with a zillion windows that I have to close. It's pretty annoying.

*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 47046 ***

I get that the failure is a previously documented bug, but ever since
I tried to upgrade Xubuntu to 6.10 I have had nothing but problems.
This is simply the first time I have chosen to submit something. I
have downloaded Xubuntu 6.10 Alt, and Ubuntu 6.06 server with nothing
but errors. I may assume that they all require a freshly formatted HD.

[Bug 77653] not allowing upgrade of packages

2007-01-03 Thread gary
Public bug reported:

I am using Xubuntu 6.10 in a fresh install. Did an "apt-get update" and
then "apt-get install hwdb-client-common". I went into the base system
packages and picked hwdb to install. The error message I received, and
it is basically the same as the last install when I tried to install the
new tar is:

OK, I can live with having to format / again, but when I installed I
formatted /, /tmp, /var, /usr & /usr/local. The only partitions that
were not formatted were /home & swap. I am just getting bored of
reinstalling.

2007-01-15 Thread gary
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 47046 ***

Ok Colin, problem temporarily solved. Ubuntu does not like partitions
to have any restrictions placed on them. As a derivative of Debian I
thought that I could partition according to their plan and not simply
use defaults for a more secure system. Unfortunately it would seem
not. I edited my fstab file so that instead of defaults it was
restricted with no-exec, no-suid & no-dev. Now it is happy. I am not
sure if I am though.

[Bug 219775] Re: Broadcom B43 wireless doesn't work in 8.04 worked in 7.10

2008-11-28 Thread gary
I just loaded Intrepid, and had some trouble. I used the steps from
"blacknred0" as repeated below and it works beautifully...

Steps:

   1. Open the terminal
   2. type this
  sudo apt-get install build-essential
   3. copy and paste OR type this (each is a separate line in the terminal)
  wget http://bu3sch.de/b43/fwcutter/b43-fwcutter-011.tar.bz2
  tar xjf b43-fwcutter-011.tar.bz2
  cd b43-fwcutter-011
  make
  cd ..
   4. then
  export FIRMWARE_INSTALL_DIR="/lib/firmware"
  wget http://downloads.openwrt.org/sources/broadcom-wl-4.80.53.0.tar.bz2
  tar xjf broadcom-wl-4.80.53.0.tar.bz2
  cd broadcom-wl-4.80.53.0/kmod
  sudo ../../b43-fwcutter-011/b43-fwcutter -w "/lib/firmware" wl_apsta.o
   5. Now reboot Ubuntu and you should be good to go.

Note that you FIRMWARE_INSTALL_DIR might change with the distro.

[Bug 41828] Re: Firefox does not create a ~/.mozilla/plugins directory if it doesn't exist.

2009-01-01 Thread gary
Just installed xubuntu 8.04 and there is no .mozilla/plugins directory
installed. System is up to date with all upgrades installed.

No not going to 8.10. This box came from Kubuntu 7.04 and too much would
not work when I tried it. As it is, the NVidia drivers still don't work,
but I can live without them.

[Bug 232012] Re: restricted nvidia driver fails after upgrade to kubuntu 8.04

2008-11-23 Thread gary
Ibid, I just did a clean install of Ubuntu 8.04 from Kubuntu 7.04 & the
nvidia drivers simply lock up the screen after log in. I have found no
errors in the log files, but the system is so stuck that the only option
is to hit the reset button on the box. K-7.04 was good & stable on the
restricted drivers. At this rate I will simply go back to the earlier
release & lurk around waiting to see if someone can come up with a fix
for this problem, which is not the ideal situation.

BTW, the video card is a nvidia GeForce 2 MX/MX400 agp board.

[Bug 82927] Re: [feisty fawn and Gutsy] NetworkManager reports incorrect online status

Updated Xubuntu to 8.10 and after rebooting the network simply stopped

`Fortunately this is only one of the household boxes, but it is an old
reliable, so having it down is a little bit of a concern. May look
around to see if I have an old NIC to install, just to see if that will
improve things.

[Bug 145836] Re: live install routine ubuntu 7.10BETA freezing

2007-10-07 Thread Gary
I have exactly a same problem. I believe the frozen process is from
/lib/partman/init.d35/dump. The following line is frozen:

rm /var/log/partition_dump

The problem is for some reasons directory /var/log is locked (I can't
even list files in the directory) when the installer is running.

My workaround is just comment the line before run the installer. It
works.

[Bug 52092] Re: Live CD fails to boot after powerup

2007-03-05 Thread gary
I tried out "Edge Eft" (6.10) -- both cd and dvd (downloaded from
ubuntu.com) and both booted and worked (on HP Pavilion laptop as
described above) like champs. booted properly (from power down) first
time, every time.

fwiw, tried out "dapper drake" (both the original and the -1 versions)
on cd only. Both failed in the same way as before; (boot first time
after successfully booting Win 2K professional; hang on all subsequent
attempts)

In addition, I tried first booting "edgy eft" and then booting "dapper
drake". Again, first boot of "dapper drake" after successful boot of
"edgy eft" worked; all subsequent attempts to boot failed. (hanging in
manner previously indicated).

Re: [Bug 52092] Re: Live CD fails to boot after powerup

Yes, I believe so. I'm intending to "graduate" this
laptop from a Windows development system into a (well,
"open source" for lack of a better term) development
system. So "dapper's" long-term support feature
doesn't really matter to me for my intended
application.

That being said, if you (all) were interested in
running this cute little bug down, I'd be more than
happy to help in whatever way I can.

I just tried the new 2.6.20-14-generic kernel and still no CD-RW burner.
This just started with the Beta release. The burner worked fine with
the Herd releases and Edgy. Funny thing is that this is the drive I use

Folks,

I did an update minutes ago and noticed that there were some kernel
changes going from 2.6.20.14.11 to 2.6.20.14.12. Sorry I don't know how
to get the log of these changes, however, my CD-RW is now working!
Thanks.

[Bug 96826] Re: Feisty Beta does not recognise CD burner

2007-04-05 Thread Gary
Folks,

Oops, please disregard the last post. The reason the CD-RW works now is
because I booted with a blank CD-R in the drive. I burned a disk just
fine. So it seem that If I leave a CD-R disk in the drive, the Kernel
discovers the burner.

[Bug 62195] Re: edgy update-grub destroys kopt

2008-06-06 Thread Gary
This issue still exists in hardy and the solution of forcing users to
adapt this behavior is short-sighted.

There are many situations where UUID doesn't work, and we need to have a
"correct" way of disabling this behavior since commenting out some lines
in update-grub will get overwritten as soon as a new update-grub is
released. Rather than telling everyone that they're wrong for not using
UUID, why not just add in some code that allows us to disable this
behavior?

UUID doesn't work if you use ghost to image the disk and then restore it
somewhere else.

This isn't a bug that can be "fixed" anywhere, since it's not really a
bug.

2008-06-06 Thread Gary

No, they don't. Ghost can backup only used space, and then restore that
by creating a new partition and filesystem (which will have a different
UUID), and then writing the files to that filesystem.

You're correct, but this isn't a bug report on what would break ghost.
This is a problem with update-grub.

[Bug 184440] Re: [nvidia] Blue hue in all videos

2008-06-26 Thread Gary
I have a T61p with 256 Nvidia Quatro 570M graphics card with Ubuntu 8.04
Hardy Heron 64bit.

I too experience this problem, but only after seeing a Realplayer format
video through the official realplayer application. These are files
ending with .rm and .rmvb

With any other file type, it's fine. But after watching .rm or .rmvb (or
even watching for the first time) the videos will have a bluish hue
affecting ALL videos of any type in my system. Logging out/in again
doesn't solve it. Only a restart will. But only for the next session. It
doesn't happen all the time, but the percentage probability is very,
very high.

[Bug 236682] [NEW] garmin_gps.ko assumes you're using usbfs

2008-06-01 Thread Gary
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: linux-image

The module garmin_gps.ko incorrectly assumes you're using usbfs. I
found some other posts online confirming this.

Check out:

http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=642999

and

https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=232097

The posted work-around of simply mounting usbfs works, but isn't
optimal. As a side note, having this module blacklisted is pretty
confusing for people upgrading from Feisty or Gutsy and then all of the
sudden their GPS stops working...

FYI - Ubuntu 8.04

[Bug 220314] [NEW] DNS broken in 32 bit java under 64 bit Heron

2008-04-21 Thread Gary
Public bug reported:

I ran updates this morning and my JDBC driver running in under 32 bit
Java can no longer resolve addresses. If I configure my app with an IP
address it works. So it seems to be a DNS issue. 64 bit Java seems to
work fine.

Here's the stack trace.

Again - if I specifiy an IP address instead of the hostname then it works fine.
Also - 64 bit seems to work fine also.
I'm using the Oracle 11g JDBC driver.

[Bug 282874] Re: kwin crashed with SIGSEGV

Problem seems to be with the Cover Switch effect. Crash occurs every
time with that effect, stops happening when I switch to a different alt-
tab effect, or disable them all.

[Bug 210395] Re: Trying to install Epson CX11NF network printer.

2008-10-20 Thread Gary
I was seeing this crash when adding a HP Photosmart C6180 network
driver, it now seems to have been fixed.

Now, when I click OK on the Printer Name/Description/Location and there
is a space in the Printer Name, there is a popup that flashes
momentarily, before disappearing. It works properly if I replace the
space with an underscore.

For reference:
$ sudo apt-cache policy system-config-printer-kde
system-config-printer-kde:

  Candidate: 0.11
