[Bug 1853369] Re: [19.10] Boot hangs at "loading initial ramdisk"

2021-01-11 Thread Aidan Sojourner
This bug started affecting me a few weeks ago. It seems to happen
whenever a new kernel version is pushed out.

This time, what Ben did in #75 -- downgrading grub to
2.02+dfsg1-12ubuntu2.1 -- was the only thing that fixed it for me. I
cannot remember exactly what fixed it for me the first time, but I did
not have to downgrade grub - I believe installing an older kernel was
what finally fixed it.

I have a Dell XPS 15 9550, Ubuntu 20.04 installed with EFI, and a LUKS
encrypted primary drive.

2020-10-10 Thread Ben Kraft
This also affected me. Downgrading grub using the instructions from
comment #54/#55 fixed the issue, so this definitely seems to be a grub
issue, and is still a problem as of version 2.04-1ubuntu26.4.

Running those instructions broke my encrypted drive setup; the
instructions at
https://gist.github.com/dragon788/e777ba64d373210e4f6306ad40ee0e80 fixed
that (and describe why setting up the chroot that way caused the
problem). Unrelated, but I mention it here in case anyone else runs
into that problem.

2020-08-31 Thread Ashu
I have fixed this issue.
I uninstalled ubuntu and installed it all over again. It was pain. I
screwed up ubuntu as well as Windows. Luckily - I had no important data in
ubuntu linux and in Windows - I keep all the data in D and E drives.
My stuff mentioned here:
https://askubuntu.com/questions/1268013/deleted-ubuntu-and-grub-but-windows-10-is-not-booting

It's working fine after that.
I have Windows 10 and ubuntu 20.4.1 LTS installed - dual boot.

[Bug 1853369] Re: [19.10] Boot hangs at "loading initial ramdisk"

2020-08-31 Thread ET
Have been facing this issue* since updating to 20.04
*stuck at boot. And when booting from recovery seeing "Loading initial ramdisk"

on XPS 13 (DELL) the solution has been disabling SGX (Intel's Software
Guard Extensions (SGX)) on the bios.

After that managed to boot normally.

2020-08-06 Thread John Nelson
Quick update on my encounter with this issue in 18.04 against an
(ancient!) 2007 iMac... after updating "intel-microcode" to version
3.20200609 (which wasn't yet available when this was reported), I am no
longer able to repro the issue. All packages are up-to-date (for 18.04
anyway), and the system is now booting fine again.

I tried installing various other kernels thinking that it might fix this
problem but no luck. Mine is Dell XPS 8930 Desktop so I don't power
cable should be an issue for laptops. Recently my other Dell XPS laptop
got a BIOS update. It is running Windows 10 dual boot with Ubuntu 18.04

[Bug 1853369] Re: [19.10] Boot hangs at "loading initial ramdisk"

2020-06-18 Thread Jack
I too have this issue with a Dell Latitude 7400.
Booting with power attached works fine, booting on battery power results in
getting stuck at “loading initial ramdisk”

In an attempt to rule out Ubuntu I installed Windows 10, patched to the
latest versions, and experience a similar hang booting Windows on
battery power (the laptop entirely hangs just before the Windows login
screen is displayed). Windows Recovery tools still seem operational.

Seems like hardware/BIOS related to me. Sorry I can’t offer anything
more than anecdotal information.

2020-06-10 Thread Rhonal Velasco
I was dealing with some of these issues after install new kernel version this
morning. However I was able to boot with older kernel versions. After a lot of
test, now I am able to boot in the new kernel without any problem.
Here there are some checks and tasks that I could accomplish:

-) Check in /etc/fstab and make sure that there are not duplicated mount
points for EFI.

-) Try apt install --reinstall linux-image-5.4.0-37-generic

-) Try sudo update-grub

Also, I removed drivers for nvidia and VirtualBox because some errors
that I saw in journalctl.

Hope this helps somebody.

I tried what "Xandor Schiefer (zeorin)" stated. But 5.4.0-31-generic
couldn't be booted. Then tried recovery mode for 5.4.0-31-generic - it

almost 2.5 years. Then heard about 20.04 LTS - seems to be smooth installed-i
wanted to try it. I followed this link Did everything from command line.
Everything went fine. I have Linux installed on PCI NVME SSD and Windows 10 on
normal SSD. I used Windows boot loader as the default entry and Ubuntu Linux to
be selected if i want to go to Linux. As per that link, i installed not using
kernels to clean up some space. I was getting purple grub screen.

But after this upgrade - i get this black grub screen.
on which Linuxes - there are two entries - i don't know which one is default.
But if i try to select either of the linux - it doesn't boot Linux and it's all
dark screen.

Though on Grub - i can select the entry for Windows and it boots it
without any issues.

What went wrong? How to come back to normal life with this upgraded ubuntu
Linux 20.04 LTS? I can select the advanced option and then tried booting
5.4.0-31-generic(kernel which comes with Ubuntu Linux 20.04 LTS) After that it
displays: Loading Linux 5.4.0-31-generic ... Loading initial ramdisk
and then it freezes
What could be the issue? But after selecting Advanced options for Ubuntu when i
select Ubuntu with Linux 4.15.0-101-generic it shows me same messages Loading
Linux 4.15.0-101-generic… Loading initial ramdisk… but not getting stuck or
freeze and finally loads new Ubuntu Linux 20.04 LTS

What's going on here? I checked that 20.04 LTS is installed and working
with this choice root@ashu-XPS-8930:/home/ashu# cat /etc/lsb-release

I was upgrading using this command on the command line:
sudo do-release-upgrade -d

[Bug 1853369] Re: [19.10] Boot hangs at "loading initial ramdisk"

2020-05-21 Thread Fredrik Normann
@zeorin Thanks for that info. I had to do the following extra. Since I
use LUKS encrypted disk and uefi.

1) Open the encrypted disk in File explorer
2) Mount the lvm partition on /mnt
   mount /dev/ubuntu-vg/root /mnt

Mount boot
mount /dev/nvme0n1p2 /mnt/boot

Mount efi
mount /dev/nvme0n1p1 /mnt/boot/efi

Standard chroot mounts
mount --bind /proc /mnt/proc
mount --bind /dev /mnt/dev
mount --bind /sys /mnt/sys
mount --bind /run /mnt/run <-- This was not listed.

Then chroot into /mnt

After adding the new apt sources and pinning the grub version and 'apt
update && apt upgrade' I had to manually install 'grub2-common'. It did
not install by default with 'apt upgrade'.

After this was done. I ran update-grub and grub-install. With efi
mounted this worked and I could reboot with old working grub.

This is bug needs to be fixed.

[Bug 1853369] Re: [19.10] Boot hangs at "loading initial ramdisk"

2020-05-21 Thread Xandor Schiefer
I did the same upgrade over the weekend and ran into this same bug. I
applied a variation of David Wilson's workaround.

I first booted on a 19.04 liveCD (downloaded from http://old-
releases.ubuntu.com/releases/disco/), 20.04 liveCD also wouldn't boot
(never tried the 19.10 liveCD), and then chrooted into my broken system
using instructions from
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/LiveCdRecovery#Update_Failure

I added

deb http://old-releases.ubuntu.com/ubuntu disco main restricted universe
multiverse
deb http://old-releases.ubuntu.com/ubuntu disco-updates main restricted
universe multiverse
deb http://old-releases.ubuntu.com/ubuntu disco-security main restricted
universe multiverse

To /etc/apt/sources.list, and created /etc/apt/preferences.d/grub with
contents:

Package: *
Pin: release n=disco
Pin-Priority: -10

Package: grub-common
Pin: release n=disco
Pin-Priority: 1000

Package: grub-efi-amd64
Pin: release n=disco
Pin-Priority: 1000

Package: grub-efi-amd64-bin
Pin: release n=disco
Pin-Priority: 1000

Package: grub-efi-amd64-signed
Pin: release n=disco
Pin-Priority: 1000

Package: grub2-common
Pin: release n=disco
Pin-Priority: 1000

and then ran

apt update
apt upgrade

which warned me about _downgrading_ grub, which is exactly what I want
for the workaround.

Until I remove the preferences file which pins the grub version I'm not
in danger of overwriting the old grub packages on a regular upgrade.

Re: [Bug 1853369] Re: [19.10] Boot hangs at "loading initial ramdisk"

2020-05-21 Thread Fredrik Normann
I did an upgrade to day from 19.04 -> 19.10 -> 20.04 and now the system
still hangs. Tried all bios settings suggested in this thread. I'll try the
grub fix, from David Wilson, but disco packages is not available anymore. I
would say that this bug should have status updated.

[Bug 1853369] Re: [19.10] Boot hangs at "loading initial ramdisk"

2020-05-18 Thread John Nelson
Ran into this today applying a mass set of updates to an 18.04 system
that was last updated sometime last year. Running on a 2007 iMac.

Apple hasn't made firmware updates for this model in years -- and
firmware updates require MacOS installed anyway AFIAK -- so that
approach is closed to me.

That said, David Wilson's workaround at #7 above worked perfectly.

I don't have this issue anymore. Today my laptop (Dell Latitude E5591)
starts when using the battery. I have installed some Ubuntu updates a
few days ago (just regular ones that come with automatic updates), and a
BIOS firmware update too (provided by Dell). One of those updates, or
the combination of the two, solved it.

[Bug 1853369] Re: [19.10] Boot hangs at "loading initial ramdisk"

2020-04-29 Thread Jan-Jonas Sämann
I recently came across this issue multiple times in ansible-managed virtual
environments. (Really bad)
This happens to me all the time because of invalid GRUB configurations.
Namingly if GRUB is set to also output to serial when there is no serial port
attached to the vm.

Could imagine that maybe at the time of the last kernel update, there
was (accidently) some usb drive connected to the mashine of the TE wich
grub now manifested and requires to map the device tree... o.O

If so, both cases must not prevent a mashine from being bootable.

[Bug 1853369] Re: [19.10] Boot hangs at "loading initial ramdisk"

2020-04-23 Thread Viacheslav Semykrasov
Yesterday my son shut down my laptop with a power button in a forced way. After
this, I couldn't boot without cable again.
Today, I had to reboot and had no success to boot as well and after this, I
plugged in my cable but forget to switch on the power filter (so cable had no
power), but I managed to boot this time.
I suppose that:
- Secure Boot doesn't help each time at least
- probably hard power off makes some influence booting success
Seems to be a floating bug

purple screen. Recovery option mentioned Loading initial ramdisk. After
I plugged in the power supply Ubuntu started successfully.

[Bug 1853369] Re: [19.10] Boot hangs at "loading initial ramdisk"

2020-04-01 Thread Viacheslav Semykrasov
Using 19.10 for a long time. This week had 2 times issue:
1st time:

last kernel 5.3.0-45
hanged on boot and on recovery:
loading initial ramdisk (in recovery mode, 5.3.0-45)
Somehow I managed to boot and after this worked properly

2nd time, today:
the same behavior, 5.3.0-42 recovery too.
Chrooted from rescue USB and upgraded 3 packages, one of them was something
about microcode...
here are my versions, but didn't help...
slava@slava-Latitude-5500:~$ dpkg -l | grep microcode
ii amd64-microcode
3.20191021.1+really3.20181128.1ubuntu2 amd64Processor
microcode firmware for AMD CPUs
ii intel-microcode3.20191115.1ubuntu0.19.10.2
amd64Processor microcode firmware for Intel CPUs
ii iucode-tool2.3.1-1
amd64Intel processor microcode tool

After I found your comments before, I tried to plug in power cable to my Dell
Lattitude 5500 and I managed to boot with a normal mode. This way I remembered
I plugged in a cable the 1st time too before successful booting
The laptop is based on intel

[Bug 1853369] Re: [19.10] Boot hangs at "loading initial ramdisk"

2020-02-12 Thread You-Sheng Yang
@Joseph, the last line you see is:

  printk: bootconsole [efifb0] disabled

And system just hangs unless manually powered off. Is this correct?

Then, two things you might want to try:

1. could you also try booting with "nosmp"?

2. does your system still boot normally in other ways, so that you can
get into the system and dump CPU microcode info? What's the output of
following command on your system?

   $ dmesg |grep microcode

I'm suspecting your case is a duplicate of bug 1862751 or similar.

2020-02-11 Thread You-Sheng Yang
Please add following kernel boot parameters and try again:

  initcall_debug ignore_loglevel=1 earlycon=efifb

Since you have neither access to console at early boot hang nor journald
that writes down kernel dmesg for further inspection, you may need to
take a picture of what's left on the screen at the end.

Unfortunately produces a 392k diff. The tags don't appear to share a

Forgot to mention: I'm also on XPS 9550, and used an 18.04 live CD to
get into a rescue system (mounted the SSD, bind mounted /proc /sys /run
/dev then chrooted)

[Bug 1853369] Re: [19.10] Boot hangs at "loading initial ramdisk"

2019-12-29 Thread David Wilson
This is to confirm manually downgrading the grub packages to those found
in 19.04 fixes the problem. This is with TPM still disabled in the BIOS
and dis_ucode_ldr kernel command line flag, but I don't think either of
those are contributing to the successful boot.

If you're stuck on this issue,

$ sudo dpkg --get-selections | grep ^grub

- For each package listed in the output, visit
https://packages.ubuntu.com/ and search the 'disco-updates' distribution
for the associated package name.

- Get the URL: Ensure you selected 'disco-updates' distribution in the
search config, do the search, click the single result (link is also
"disco-updates"), click "amd64", right-click copy one of the .deb
download links

- wget each package in turn, for example:

$ wget
http://mirrors.kernel.org/ubuntu/pool/main/g/grub2/grub2-common_2.02+dfsg1-12ubuntu2.1_amd64.deb

- dpkg -i each package in turn, for example:

$ sudo dpkg -i grub2-common_2.02+dfsg1-12ubuntu2.1_amd64.deb

Some packages depend on each other, so you might have to download e.g.
the common package and install it with "dpkg -i" at the same time as the
dependent package -- just supply both .debs on the dpkg command line.

- Run update-grub and grub-install

- Your machine should boot again.

- Don't install upgrades from apt until a real fix appears -- they'll
upgrade GRUB again. Investigate apt package pinning to keep this
configuration permanently (TBD -- I haven't done this yet)

[Bug 1853369] Re: [19.10] Boot hangs at "loading initial ramdisk"

2019-12-29 Thread David Wilson
The problem still manifests with 5.3.0-24-generic, in addition to the
previously known-good kernel used by 19.04.

Like others I tried disabling the TPM but it did not help.

Given the problem still manifests with the previous kernel, this looks
like it may be a GRUB issue. Will try downgrading GRUB and updating this
ticket if I learn more.

Yes, it should be the one picked by GRUB.

2019-12-06 Thread Fredrik Normann
I encountered this bug when doing a do-release-upgrade. Unable to boot.
If I update now, will kernel 5.3.0-24-generic be used?

[Bug 1853369] Re: [19.10] Boot hangs at "loading initial ramdisk"

2019-11-20 Thread Ubuntu Foundations Team Bug Bot
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. It seems that your bug report is not filed about a
specific source package though, rather it is just filed against Ubuntu
in general. It is important that bug reports be filed about source
packages so that people interested in the package can find the bugs
about it. You can find some hints about determining what package your
bug might be about at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage.
You might also ask for help in the #ubuntu-bugs irc channel on Freenode.

To change the source package that this bug is filed about visit
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/1853369/+editstatus and add the
package name in the text box next to the word Package.
