For what it's worth: I updated to intrepid, and just installed linux-image-rt 2.6.27.3.4. @Lorenzo: I have the same problem - one reboot in five, or thereabouts, compiz chokes and hits 100%+ of cpu - but I had it with the Beta driver as well, so I suspect it may actually be compiz that has the issue. The new driver works well. When i tried the last time to install from restricted driver i have seen that the system tried to load the kernel module for nvidia-glx instead nvidia-glx-new. Could the problem caused by this? After some reboot the stable driver don't look so stable... my system slow down and become unusable with compiz enabled, i come back to beta driver and no problem. The 173-series drivers are now available from Nvidia at http://www.nvidia.com/object/linux_display_ia32_173.14.05.html This driver works with the -rt kernel (as reported earlier, while the driver was in beta) They should be packaged for 8.04 TO RESOLVE THIS BUG! my two cents : I have a Dell Latitude D820 (video: Quadro NVS 110M/GeForce Go 7300) I was using linux-rt and nvidia-glx-new in Gutsy. After upgrading to Hardy, I got the black screen / no response symptom. I changed for nvidia-glx (not new) still with linux-rt, and it worked fine. Compiz runs quite smoothly. NB: when switching to -generic, nvidia-glx-new and nvidia-glx both work fine. NB2: a colleague has exactly the same laptop. He did a fresh install of Hardy. Hi Alessio, I have exactly the same issue with my amd64 worstation with a nVidia quadrio nvs 280. Is it only an amd64 kernell problem or user with an i386 have the same problem ? I did first an upgrade, it worked well with generic kernell. Then tried to start on -rt kernell, it gives a blank screen. So, thinking it was a problem of upgrade, I did a fresh install, erasing the / partition, just keeping my /home partition. And the same problem appear as soon as I tried to start on the -rt kernell with this fresh install. It is very annoying since I do a lot of demonstration of Ubuntu and Ubuntu Studio (faculty, lug, free music organisations, etc...) I mean that it is not possible to show how Ubuntu is beautiful, when working on multimedia. And without X acceleration, X-Runs caused by moving windows or changing of desktop space create X-Runs in Jack (of course, even without effect!). So not a very good point for audio work. You decided to put it as low priority... isn't it more important than that ? Antoine, People can incurr in this bug only if: 1) Have got some specific (thus not all) nvidia graphics card models 2) Install and use -rt kernel flavour But the bug is in nvidia closed drivers not in -rt. Try to install Nvidia Linux beta drivers and you'll see that it works! Alessio, It seems that the driver you suggest (173.08) is not compatible with all the cards. Only for some Geforce series, and not all the models. Quadro cards are not supported. But please notice that there is no problem with the -generic kernell, using the nvidia-glx-new. Only problems with the -rt kernell. So the nVidia driver may not be the only reason of the bug. First point, I will test the envyng-gtk package wich seems to detect the gpu, and auto download, compil, install and set up the latest manufacturer driver (nVidia or ATI) and let you know if it is better. Second point, It seems that installing nvidia-glx package don't enable well the acceleration (gnome effects), I will test that too and report. Bug #115102 is not a duplicate of this one and additionally forward duping is a bad habit to get into - there's nothing here that would have warranted doing so. Hell-o board...newbie to Linux...used Ubuntu Gutsy for the last week with no problems. Downloaded ubuntustudio .iso and the fun has begun... Over the last two days I have re-installed it twice trying to find out the issue with the nvidia-glx-new. It's obvious to me that the new file has some serious issues. It only happens on Ubuntustudio...I reinstalled Gutsy and the desktop enhancements worked just fine. I get the same problem as has been reported: black screen after updating driver. I have to revert customization to get back in. I tried reverting to nvidia-glx (not -new) but won't let me use desktop enhancements without the new driver. I'm using nvidia nforce 650i SLI. I have a Geforce 6400 Go (laptop version), so no SLI, and the -12-rt kernel did not load the nvidia driver correctly on my setup. I tried manually installing the beta drivers from nVidia's website and it works, now the driver is loaded correctly by the -16-rt kernel. Hi guys ! I have a good news, I think. I had this problem some weeks ago, and I uninstall the RT kernel. Today, I tried again, but and know it works. This is how I did : I went to the Hardware Drivers Manager and disabled the nvidia driver (so it has been uninstalled). Then, I installed the linux-rt package, and rebooted on it. And then, I went again on Hardware drivers manager to re-enable the nvidia driver and know it works well ! I am on Linux RT with the nvidia driver from the hardy repository. I tried the beta driver end they work with lastest kernel and non SLI system but i have to add nvidia to /etc/modules and to manually select the correct linux-headers for rt (previously the generic one was installed. Why with a ubuntustudio installation? ). some users in the forum are reporting that manually installing the nvidia driver from nvidia.com resolves this issue http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=736984 However, note that the user reporting that fix has an SLI system, and reports that the -12 revision of the -rt kernel worked for them. I don't have an SLI setup and the -12 revision kernel did not load the nvidia driver. @Alessio Igor Bogani Sorry, should have given more info. I installed from and Ubuntustudio DVD, clean install. Prior to recent updates I got the black screen. I could ssh in, but couldn't restart the system. Had to do cold reboot. Now after several updates X won't start...I've attached my latest Xorg.0.log. @prismatic7, they are using the latest nvidia BETA drivers. It's not a bug in the server unless you can prove it. The system seems to hang when it loads libglx (which is the nvidia version). Well, I think I've fairly comprehensively proved that it's an actual bug, given that the symptoms seem reproducible on several systems. It's also been present (for me) in every revision of the -rt kernel from -12. I have tried the EnvyNG installer (with the -12 and -14 revisions) which also produced the same error, but EnvyNG is unsupported, as I understand it... Is this the upstream installer you mean, Timo? I'm not at my laptop right now, so I can't test your suggestion yet, anyway. Will do as soon as I can though. Given that the error is consistent across several kernels, but appears only in the -rt flavour, it's pretty odd. Nvidia freeze on linux RT when X start. @exactt: Nope, it's not falling back to anything for us. We don't get any picture. The screen remains black (It's still transmitting a signal though, because my monitor doesn't say No signal) and the only way to escape is by either manually cycling the system's power, or sending a SysRq (SysRq + B reboots... It doesn't unmount anything before, so I don't know if it's much safer, but it's got to be better than pulling out the power from under your system, right?). Anyway, not a duplicate. Neither bugs you've marked as duplicates seem to actually be duplicates. In Bug #206207 you can restart by pressing ctrl+backspace and ctrl+alt+del. So, unless you retract your statement that it is impossible to restart that way, it is either a different bug or you are mistaken. In Bug # 205927 Xorg actually crashes, which is not the behavior you are describing here(Here, Xorg is hanging, which, technically, is not a crash). I can, however, confirm that this bug does occur. Well, to be honest the submitter of Bug #205927 hasn't provided X.org logs for verification, so I'm probably a bit pre-emptive in marking it anything other than incomplete... The description is eerily similar, so I'll leave it duped until proven otherwise... You're right though - Bug #206207 doesn't seem to be a duplicate, on second viewing... Unmarking... However, there does seem to be a significant error in the combination of nvidia-glx-new and -rt flavour kernels. After some fiddling and tweaking, this seems to be an xserver-xorg problem. To reiterate: Booting from the -10 AND -11 realtime kernels, and attempting to use the non-free nvidia driver results in a total lockup of the PC. IT is a Dell XPS m1210 with an Nvidia GeForce Go 7400 card and I'm running the x86_64 flavour.
