[Bug 359061] Re: warning: Screen isn't composited. Please run compiz (fusion) or another compositing manager

2009-09-03 Thread JDHatman
by Jason Hatman

Thanks!!

I was not able to start AWN. After configuring and enabling the
Compositing manager, it worked. However, then my visual Effects stopped
working. I didn't make the connection between the two. I stopped the
compositing manager and now the effects work again.

[Bug 359061] Re: warning: Screen isn't composited. Please run compiz (fusion) or another compositing manager

2009-05-14 Thread Daniel
If I need to revert the command in Terminal what do I have to do?

The command was:

From a terminal, run (without quotes) gconftool-2 --set
/apps/metacity/general/compositing_manager --type=bool true

I found that for some operations I need to revert this command.

2009-05-14 Thread Mark Lee
Because I'm feeling a bit lazy, here are the instructions, but in
reverse.

There are three ways to disable Metacity's compositing manager:

1. (Requires Jaunty, I think) Press Alt-F2 and run (without quotes) metacity
--no-composite --replace
2. Click the Applications menu, navigate to System or System Tools, and
run Configuration Editor. Navigate to the /apps/metacity/general folder and
make sure the compositing_manager checkbox is unchecked.
3. From a terminal, run (without quotes) gconftool-2 --set
/apps/metacity/general/compositing_manager --type=bool false

2009-05-13 Thread Daniel
To enable the compositing manager, you need to use the Configuration
Editor, AKA gconf-editor, to set the key
/apps/metacity/general/compositing_manager to true (i.e., the box must
be checked).

Sorry for the question:
How would one start the AKA gconf-editor in order to check the box in the
metacity compositing manager?

[Bug 359061] Re: warning: Screen isn't composited. Please run compiz (fusion) or another compositing manager

2009-05-13 Thread Daygan
okay.. that didn't really fix things for me.. well, maybe it fixed about
50% of the problem.

I tried qetuR's method, checked the box, removed my workaround to force-
start compiz at startup, and then restarted my computer. I suppose
metacity's compositing manager started properly, or at least it didn't
give Avant Windows Manager any major problems, but suddenly I had 4
desktop spaces instead of two.. and Extra visual effects options was
still not available - nor was Normal.

After starting the compiz fusion icon, selecting compiz as opposed to
metacity, and restarting the windows manager, things were back to
normal, but still, that's just a workaround. I'd like the actual
solution.. I'll keep looking into it...

correction - I also had to select compiz fusion icon-compiz options

deselect loose bindings and it was still okay..

I should note that the Visual Effects tab is not affected by switching
Metacity's compositing manager on or off, as it is a Compiz-centric
preferences pane.

Also, FWIW, it's called Avant WIndow Navigator, not Avant Windows
Manager.

2009-05-07 Thread qetuR
Had the same problem, and should it not be enough to just try to fix the
compositing manager?

If you run Gnome, your default window-manager is Metacity, right? On
this link: http://wiki.awn-
project.org/Installation#Installing_Avant_Window_Navigator I found a fix
for Metacity.

Metacity: The default window manager for Gnome. Compositing support was
started for this WM in November 2003 (around version 2.7.0), but it has
never been very stable. Because of this, it is not enabled in most
distributions. Recently though, work started on a new implementation for
compositing support that is in version 2.22.0 (and later). To enable the
compositing manager, you need to use the Configuration Editor, AKA
gconf-editor, to set the key /apps/metacity/general/compositing_manager
to true (i.e., the box must be checked).

It's seems more a drivers/window-manager problem than an Awn problem.
Actually, this warning is a normal behavior of Awn. The goal is to warn
the user that there is a problem in his configuration.

hmm.. ichudov, you're right - it seems that when I try to change my
desktop effects back to normal or extra, I get the message desktop
effects could not be enabled and yes, of course, I do have this same
AWN problem. I will note that I have another computer with which I do
not have this problem at all and have also updated to Ubuntu 9.04 on
that one. Also, when I turn on the compiz fusion icon and select reload
window manager the awn problem is solved, as is the Desktop Effects
issue. I have not, however, yet been able to fix this problem without
manually reloading windows manager. I'll have to see what is different
between my home computer (problem-free) and my laptop which has this
problem.

2009-04-29 Thread ichudov
I have the same problem.

This is because the window manager really is NOT composited.

Go to your System/Preferences/Appearance/Desktop Effects and check. They
are set to NONE if you have the same problem as me.

The real problem is that they can no longer be changed to something
else, something lost the capability to run a compositing manager.

It is a regression, as I was previously able to run a compositing
manager.

guess you try to autostart avant-window-navigator. Do you add it
