[Bug 434520] Re: Pulseaudio refuses to use internal microphone input (Lenovo X300)

2012-03-26 Thread João Miguel Lopes Moreira
The only solution to make microphone work is to install linux-backports-
modules-alsa-generic...

Just go to:

Menu / System / Administration / Synaptic Package Manager

And search and mark for installation:

linux-backports-modules-alsa-generic

tip: if you have multiple versions click on the first and read the
description which should inform what name to install...

If after the reboot and mic mute is off, still does not work, just go to
terminal and type:

sudo nano /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf

and add or change the following:

options snd-hda-intel model=auto enable=yes

Then Ctrl+X, type Y to write and exit, reboot and mic will work.

Bye and have lots of fun with Ubuntu (the best).

[Bug 434520] Re: Pulseaudio refuses to use internal microphone input (Lenovo X300)

2010-10-21 Thread David Henningsson
Hmm, a difference between the workaround and module-udev-detect is actually the
connect string.
Assume that you have this workaround and it's working successfully:

load-module module-alsa-source device=hw:0

Now try changing the line to:

load-module module-alsa-source device=front:0

Reboot. Does the workaround still work or does changing hw:0 to
front:0 make the workaround stop working?

2010-10-21 Thread Larry Reid
front:0 works for me. After reboot I still have audio on the internal
mike, as shown by the Pulse Audio volume meter for recording.

I should note that with either workaround, after reboot I have to go
into Gnome Alsa Mixer and click on the Rec checkbox under capture.
This has always been the behaviour for me.

[Bug 434520] Re: Pulseaudio refuses to use internal microphone input (Lenovo X300)

2010-10-20 Thread Larry Reid
David: When I try load-module module-udev-detect ignore_db=1 I get no
sound recording at all. In fact, all sound appears to be broken, e.g.
the volume icon in the panel shows no volume and doesn't respond to any
attempts to unmute or change volume.

About two months ago I spent a day trying to identify why the workaround
worked, and found nothing else that would get the sound to work if I
didn't have that line in /etc/pulse/default.pa. But I don't understand
the alsa/pulse/sound combination to claim I was being very systematic.
Feel free to point me at some additional reading or ask me to do
additional tests. I can help in the evenings and have family
responsibilities, but I'll try to be as responsive as I can.

[Bug 434520] Re: Pulseaudio refuses to use internal microphone input (Lenovo X300)

2010-10-20 Thread Jack Lecou
I'm on the road with a different computer so can't test at the moment,
but will the first chance I get.

I think my reasoning while flailing about to come up with the workaround
was the hope that maybe pulseaudio might not be quite as smart or
vigilant about (mis)managing the second card instance. In other words,
the second instance might work like all instances did in Jaunty*, where
alsamixer could be used to manually switch to the correct device right
under pulseaudio's nose, and thus escape whatever bad or misinterpreted
metadata pulseaudio is using to choose the wrong mic.

It does seem to sort of work that way in practice, but I have no idea
whether that's what is actually happening, or why.

* Note that the same bug was also present back in Jaunty -- the workaround had
fewer steps, but pulseaudio still activated the wrong mic initially.

[Bug 434520] Re: Pulseaudio refuses to use internal microphone input (Lenovo X300)

2010-10-19 Thread David Henningsson
Oh, I'd like to understand what's going on here, what is it that makes
recording so impossible with the standard udev detect?

I've done some research about the card with device_id=29. It seems to
originate from here: http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/Thinkpad-acpi (note
the text saying As of kernel 2.6.33 the thinkpad_acpi driver now has a
ALSA sub-driver). But it is loaded regardless of the manual alsa-source
load, and it always fails because of no working profile, and so it
shouldn't be the thing destroying the internal mic.

If we assume that you *don't* have the load-module module-alsa-source
device=hw:0 workaround, is there any way you can get the internal mic
working, e g, if you first start a recording through PA (e g with gnome-
sound-recorder), then, while recording continues, fiddle with the
alsamixer levels the way they need to be fiddled with, will that enable
you to record sound in PA?

Also, if you replace load-module module-udev-detect with load-module
module-udev-detect ignore_db=1, will that make any difference?

If this still is a problem on Maverick, and you have the same hardware as the

you please supply a PulseAudio verbose log according to

The log must be supplied on a standard Maverick system, e g a Live-CD, that is,
without a changed default.pa as workaround suggested.

Thanks!

[Bug 434520] Re: Pulseaudio refuses to use internal microphone input (Lenovo X300)

2010-06-22 Thread Tarek Loubani
Very sadly, this issue continues with 10.04 on an X300. I have tried
upgrading to alsa 1.0.23, tried almost every setting in /etc/modprobe.d
/alsa-base.conf , and played tons with pulse and alsamixer.

As it stands now, clearly the alsa device works when pulseaudio is
bypassed. However, for some reason pulse doesn't pick it up. I suspect
this is a combination problem with both alsa and pulse.

2010-05-24 Thread phorminx
After upgrading from 8.10 to 10.04, I am experiencing the very same problems
with my X300. The internal mic doesn't work anymore. Yet when I try Jack's
workaround (#8) it doesn't work for me. I do get the new internal input device.
Yet when I make the same selections in alsamixer like Larry (#12), I end up
with complete silence in the input channel as if Internal Audio was set mute.
Should I try to select Internal Audio anywhere else besides pavucontrol? Do I
need particular settings within gstreamer-properties? It appears I am missing
something trivial, yet I cannot figure out what.
Any help is appreciated!

Stick it into autostart list and you are done. This is an ugly hack but it

2010-05-07 Thread Larry Reid
Okay. If I add the line to /etc/pulse/default.pa as Jack said in comment
#8. Then I installed gnome-alsa-mixer. I ran it from Applications-
Sound and Video- Gnome Alsa Mixer. I check Mute and uncheck Rec.
under Mic, and uncheck Mute and check Rec. over towards
Internal. I also check Internal Mic, although I'm not sure it's
needed. Then I can use either the internal microphone or an external
microphone.

It seems like I have to set the options in Gnome Alsa Mixer every time I
restart, but it's possible that there are some other things at play that
make it so for me.

Ignore comments #5 and #10 unless you're back on 9.04. On further
research, it appears that others have had the same experience -- the
workarounds that worked in 9.04 don't work in 9.10 or 10.04.

I'm working with the 10.04 release candidate and having the same
problem. I was able to use Jack's workaround in comment #8 to get
Internal Mic in the terminal version of alsamixer, but I can't seem to
find the right combination of settings to record anything with Sound

Can someone who has this working in 10.04 please post the output from

Larry's suggestion doesn't work for me. Or rather, it might, but I can't
find the volume icon in the top panel he refers to. (Perhaps it's a
non-default applet that I don't have installed?)

I only have the standard panel volume control, which has a volume slider
on left click, and a menu with mute and sound preferences on right
click. Sound preferences brings up the standard sound preferences
control panel, which is unhelpful.

Also, this bug is still present, exactly as originally described, in

I did just discover that I can make gnome-sound-recorder, and probably
other gstreamer apps, work by bypassing pulseaudio entirely for input.
Just use gstreamer-properties to select Alsa as the input plugin (I also
have to select my specific device AD198x Analog, as default doesn't
work).

This isn't an entirely satisfactory solution, however. Pulseaudio input
is still crippled, and Skype, for example, appears to rely on pulseaudio
only nowadays.

Ok, I've at least found a workaround, but the bug is still present:

Manually loading an alsa source in /etc/pulse/default.pa works (load-
module module-alsa-source device=hw:0,0).

This adds an Internal Audio input device, in additon to the auto-
loaded (udev?) Internal Audio Analog Stereo.

After configuring alsa levels with alsamixer, the manually loaded
Internal Audio device works for recording. The auto-loaded Internal
Analog Stereo device still behaves incorrectly (no sound is produced,
and selecting it misconfigures the alsa levels; they have to be
readjusted before the manual device works again).

therefore doesn't allow me to select the internal microphone. However,
if I click on the volume icon in the top panel and click on the volume
control button, I get something that is more useful. Select Devide HDA
Intel (Alsa mixer), then select the Switches tab. Unselect Mix and
select Microphone Capture and Internal Mic. That seems to make the
internal mike work.

2) Sometimes the internal microphone doesn't work, even though the
settings look right. I have to re-select Internal Mic, even if the
check box beside Internal Mic is checked. I click on it to turn it
off, then click on it again to turn it on.

Weird and undesirable behaviour, for sure, since I have to select the
microphone manually, but at least I feel I have some control over the
situation.

Yes. The analog stereo duplex profile is selected in the Hardware tab.
There is only one device available in the Input tab - Internal Audio
Analog Stereo.
