[Bug 434520] Re: Pulseaudio refuses to use internal microphone input (Lenovo X300)
The only solution to make microphone work is to install linux-backports- modules-alsa-generic... Just go to: Menu / System / Administration / Synaptic Package Manager And search and mark for installation: linux-backports-modules-alsa-generic tip: if you have multiple versions click on the first and read the description which should inform what name to install... If after the reboot and mic mute is off, still does not work, just go to terminal and type: sudo nano /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf and add or change the following: options snd-hda-intel model=auto enable=yes Then Ctrl+X, type Y to write and exit, reboot and mic will work. Bye and have lots of fun with Ubuntu (the best). -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/434520 Title: Pulseaudio refuses to use internal microphone input (Lenovo X300) To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/pulseaudio/+bug/434520/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 434520] Re: Pulseaudio refuses to use internal microphone input (Lenovo X300)
Hmm, a difference between the workaround and module-udev-detect is actually the connect string. Assume that you have this workaround and it's working successfully: load-module module-alsa-source device=hw:0 Now try changing the line to: load-module module-alsa-source device=front:0 Reboot. Does the workaround still work or does changing hw:0 to front:0 make the workaround stop working? -- Pulseaudio refuses to use internal microphone input (Lenovo X300) https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/434520 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 434520] Re: Pulseaudio refuses to use internal microphone input (Lenovo X300)
front:0 works for me. After reboot I still have audio on the internal mike, as shown by the Pulse Audio volume meter for recording. I should note that with either workaround, after reboot I have to go into Gnome Alsa Mixer and click on the Rec checkbox under capture. This has always been the behaviour for me. -- Pulseaudio refuses to use internal microphone input (Lenovo X300) https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/434520 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 434520] Re: Pulseaudio refuses to use internal microphone input (Lenovo X300)
David: When I try load-module module-udev-detect ignore_db=1 I get no sound recording at all. In fact, all sound appears to be broken, e.g. the volume icon in the panel shows no volume and doesn't respond to any attempts to unmute or change volume. About two months ago I spent a day trying to identify why the workaround worked, and found nothing else that would get the sound to work if I didn't have that line in /etc/pulse/default.pa. But I don't understand the alsa/pulse/sound combination to claim I was being very systematic. Feel free to point me at some additional reading or ask me to do additional tests. I can help in the evenings and have family responsibilities, but I'll try to be as responsive as I can. -- Pulseaudio refuses to use internal microphone input (Lenovo X300) https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/434520 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 434520] Re: Pulseaudio refuses to use internal microphone input (Lenovo X300)
I'm on the road with a different computer so can't test at the moment, but will the first chance I get. I think my reasoning while flailing about to come up with the workaround was the hope that maybe pulseaudio might not be quite as smart or vigilant about (mis)managing the second card instance. In other words, the second instance might work like all instances did in Jaunty*, where alsamixer could be used to manually switch to the correct device right under pulseaudio's nose, and thus escape whatever bad or misinterpreted metadata pulseaudio is using to choose the wrong mic. It does seem to sort of work that way in practice, but I have no idea whether that's what is actually happening, or why. * Note that the same bug was also present back in Jaunty -- the workaround had fewer steps, but pulseaudio still activated the wrong mic initially. -- Pulseaudio refuses to use internal microphone input (Lenovo X300) https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/434520 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 434520] Re: Pulseaudio refuses to use internal microphone input (Lenovo X300)
Oh, I'd like to understand what's going on here, what is it that makes recording so impossible with the standard udev detect? I've done some research about the card with device_id=29. It seems to originate from here: http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/Thinkpad-acpi (note the text saying As of kernel 2.6.33 the thinkpad_acpi driver now has a ALSA sub-driver). But it is loaded regardless of the manual alsa-source load, and it always fails because of no working profile, and so it shouldn't be the thing destroying the internal mic. If we assume that you *don't* have the load-module module-alsa-source device=hw:0 workaround, is there any way you can get the internal mic working, e g, if you first start a recording through PA (e g with gnome- sound-recorder), then, while recording continues, fiddle with the alsamixer levels the way they need to be fiddled with, will that enable you to record sound in PA? Also, if you replace load-module module-udev-detect with load-module module-udev-detect ignore_db=1, will that make any difference? -- Pulseaudio refuses to use internal microphone input (Lenovo X300) https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/434520 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Very sadly, this issue continues with 10.04 on an X300. Okay. If I add the line to /etc/pulse/default.pa as Jack said in comment #8. Then I installed gnome-alsa-mixer. I ran it from Applications- Sound and Video- Gnome Alsa Mixer. I check Mute and uncheck Rec. under Mic, and uncheck Mute and check Rec. over towards Internal. I also check Internal Mic, although I'm not sure it's needed. Then I can use either the internal microphone or an external microphone. It seems like I have to set the options in Gnome Alsa Mixer every time I restart, but it's possible that there are some other things at play that make it so for me. ** Attachment added: Pantallazo-GNOME ALSA Mixer.png http://launchpadlibrarian.net/48030917/Pantallazo-GNOME%20ALSA%20Mixer.png -- Pulseaudio refuses to use internal microphone input (Lenovo X300) https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/434520 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Larry's suggestion doesn't work for me. Or rather, it might, but I can't find the volume icon in the top panel he refers to. (Perhaps it's a non-default applet that I don't have installed?) I only have the standard panel volume control, which has a volume slider on left click, and a menu with mute and sound preferences on right click. Sound preferences brings up the standard sound preferences control panel, which is unhelpful. I did just discover that I can make gnome-sound-recorder, and probably other gstreamer apps, work by bypassing pulseaudio entirely for input. Just use gstreamer-properties to select Alsa as the input plugin (I also have to select my specific device AD198x Analog, as default doesn't work). This isn't an entirely satisfactory solution, however. Ok, I've at least found a workaround, but the bug is still present: Manually loading an alsa source in /etc/pulse/default.pa works (load- module module-alsa-source device=hw:0,0). This adds an Internal Audio input device, in additon to the auto- loaded (udev?) Internal Audio Analog Stereo. After configuring alsa levels with alsamixer, the manually loaded Internal Audio device works for recording. The auto-loaded Internal Analog Stereo device still behaves incorrectly (no sound is produced, and selecting it misconfigures the alsa levels; they have to be readjusted before the manual device works again). -- Pulseaudio refuses to use internal microphone input (Lenovo X300) https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/434520 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 434520] Re: Pulseaudio refuses to use internal microphone input (Lenovo X300)
I have a Lenovo x300 running 9.04 and I'm struggling with the internal microphone, too. I've found a couple of things: 1) The Gnome Alsa Mixer does what the original poster said, and therefore doesn't allow me to select the internal microphone. However, if I click on the volume icon in the top panel and click on the volume control button, I get something that is more useful. Select Devide HDA Intel (Alsa mixer), then select the Switches tab. Unselect Mix and select Microphone Capture and Internal Mic. That seems to make the internal mike work. 2) Sometimes the internal microphone doesn't work, even though the settings look right. I have to re-select Internal Mic, even if the check box beside Internal Mic is checked. I click on it to turn it off, then click on it again to turn it on. Weird and undesirable behaviour, for sure, since I have to select the microphone manually, but at least I feel I have some control over the situation. -- Pulseaudio refuses to use internal microphone input (Lenovo X300) https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/434520 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
