2010-06-05 Thread zerberous
Hello,

After a few weeks of testing I have found

 http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v2.6.34-rc7-lucid/ ?

to be much better and hardly had any problems with my WLAN.

-Thanks

P.S. The new kernel seems to break ureadahead which is a minor
inconvenience.

Hello Fumihito

Again thank you very much for your help.

I have just installed: Mainline 2.6.24-rc7 from the given link.

A first test has shown a stable transfer rate of 3.2 MB/s which is ok.

I also noticed almost no transfer delays. With the old kernel the
transfer would get stuck sometimes and resume after 2-3 seconds.

Yesterday I did a file transfer test to my notebook with the old
kernel which was around 240 kb/s. Dmesg showed a firmware error
message.

I will keep testing the new kernel :-)

Re: [Bug 542821] Re: Wireless flaky EliteBook 6930p HP Notebook

2010-05-20 Thread zerberous
Hello

The new kernel does not seem to work perfectly. Currently, I am down
to a transfer rate of 800 kb/s which is still better than the previous
ca. 200 kb/s.

I switched WLAN off and on using the radio kill switch but it did not
make a difference.
The dmesg-log mentioned that the regulatory settings have been restored.

Btw: how can Ubuntu / driver figure out which are the correct
regulatory settings? I am using an US keyboard layout, US-language
settings etc. Only my time zone is set to Europe/City.

I will keep testing the new kernel since it is better.

Thanks
Zerberous

Re: [Bug 542821] Re: Wireless flaky EliteBook 6930p HP Notebook

2010-05-02 Thread zerberous
Hello Fumihito

Thanks for looking into this.

Meanwhile I have installed the officially released 64bit version of
Ubuntu.

Things are strange. After a fresh installation and a reboot WLAN did
not work at all (except for discovery/scanning).

There were error messages regarding the firmware.

I googled and found this to be quite similar:

   https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=519154

Subsequently,

  echo options iwlagn swcrypto=1 /etc/modprobe.d/options

restored WLAN functionallity, but the transfer rate was still too slow!
Max. 1 MB/s with pauses if big files are transferred.

Then I removed options iwlagn swcrypto=1 from options to reproduce
the original error messages for you but after the reboot WLAN worked
unexpectedly and was much faster - ca. 3.8 MB/s.

Weirdly, the screen resolution had also changed from native 1280x800
to 1024x768.

Now, yet another reboot and the screen resolution is fine and WLAN
works fine too (without options iwlagn swcrypto=1).

So things seem to be resolved for now. If things start failing again.
I will certainly report it.

Here some more information on my machine:

2010-05-02 Thread zerberous
Sorry, to bother you again. I seemed to have missed something!?

With echo options iwlagn swcrypto=1 /etc/modprobe.d/options

I get 3.7 MB/s currently.

Without the fix, only 100-200 kb/s.

Now, I also get the original error message (without fix):

 22.934949] wlan0: associated
[ 22.937358] ADDRCONF(NETDEV_CHANGE): wlan0: link becomes ready
[ 23.032686] Intel AES-NI instructions are not detected.

So, it does not really work without the echo options iwlagn
swcrypto=1  /etc/modprobe.d/options
fix.

Thanks for looking into this!

 Status in Ubuntu: New

 Bug description:
Wireless had been flaky with Karmic (2-3 MB/s with interruptions, sometimes
slows down). Now in 10.04 the wireless is still flaky but (connection losses)
and much slower. The maximum data rate now is between 100-300 kb/s. So it
 actually got worse after upgrading.

I assume this is a kernel driver issue.
